Which group has had the biggest impact, and best songs, over the last 50 years?
Heart

yeah, Heart!
although their back up band has generally been men, so by that light you might let Fleetwood Mac slip in there.

For me, it’s The Supremes. When they were on the radio, or on TV (like Ed Sullivan), you always knew it was Diana Ross and The Supremes. And, wow, twelve #1 songs.

The Runaways
Not an "act," not merely a group.... they were a kickass BAND.

You still can't exclude The Supremes, because they lasted until late 70s.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 30, 2020 6:01 PM |
The Marvelettes had a lot of hits out in the 1960's. They had Motown's first #1 hit and first gold record, Please Mr. Postman.
Smokey Robinson wrote a lot of their hit songs.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 30, 2020 9:53 PM |
The Three Degrees are probably the most underrated girl group from the 70s and/or 60s. They had so many great songs but they are only remembered for "When Will I See You Again" (a great song, but they have many songs on the same level or better). And all three of the main members could sing. I really like what they did with "Rain on My Parade" here.

I love the Supremes--some of those songs are classics--but they didn't invent the girl group look and sound. There are wonderful groups with sophisticated harmonies and new sounds that came before. I actually think of the Supremes as the Last Great Girl Group of that era.

r38, when I was in high school I purchased a 3 hour 70s/80s porn compilation (I think from VCA Studios), how they fit it all one one dvd is beyond me. At the end of one scene they played Heat Wave for 30-40 seconds as a guy slowly walks down a street (porn with plots). I started grooving so much to the song and stopped jerking off to find it online. . I always smile when I hear it and think of that scene. I guess the rules for using popular songs in porn were a lot more lax in the early 80s.
If we are talking post 70s then, Beyonce Knowles & Destiny's Step Children would be my number one pick. If we include the 60s, the there is no denying that The Supremes are it. From the Diana Ross days to their sad final performances, that group had so many hits.
I know this is a cover, but it's such a bop. In Supremes fashion, they end it all with Mary singing lead and literally casting a shadow on the other two. The more things changed the more they stayed the same with that group.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 30, 2020 11:53 PM |
The Breeders - female fronted group. Love their hit single song "Cannonball" - genius!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 31, 2020 4:17 AM |
The Go-Go's own this title. They learned how to play their own instruments, write their own hit songs, created their own wardrobe (even using garbage bags, etc.), made their own dance moves (The Belinda anyone?) & designed their own album covers & music videos. They also had a female manager which I don't think any other group aup to that time could say.. Would they have had more #1 songs around the globe with some male management/input? Possibly but they were intent to do it their way.
The Bangles were their "little sister' who came later.
100% girl power before the Spice Girls even dreamed up the phrase (sorry Simon).
The Supremes didn't play any instruments, write their own songs & had males making most of the decisions. Successful yes but ground breaking? Hardly.

[quote]No one's mentioned MARTHA REEVES AND THE VANDELLAS, come on people!
I agree that they had great songs in the sixties. But maybe they’ve been put in the back burner due to their current condition.
Whereas Diane and Mary Can still sound decent, Martha’s soulful voice is so shot that she has to resort to using her operatic soprano training to get any notes out. And as a result, she sounds ridiculous. Imagine Heatwave performed by Maria Callas.
Plus they were always ugly as all sin, which took away from their overall look, that not even some cool dresses and dance moves could save.
The third Motown girl group, The Marvelettes, had some interesting hits, but their lead singers ended up dead or homeless. Plus it was weird seeing three girls lío synch to what was clearly a five-girl session, with a lead singer and four-part loud screeching.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 31, 2020 11:35 AM |
I'll always turn to the Bangles over the Go-Go's - superior songs, musicianship and vocals.
When it comes to late 90s early 00s UK girl groups, the content of Girls Aloud's 5 albums surpasses anything the others have done, (Untouchable, Call The Shots, Biology, Wake Me Up, On The Metro, Swinging London Town, Graffiti My Soul, Memory Of You etc) but honourable mentions to All Saints' Black Coffee, Spice Girls' Viva Forever, Sugababes' About You Now, B*witched's Blame It On The Weatherman and Atomic Kitten's The Last Goodbye.

R70 except they didn't write their hits, nor play half the instruments, and 1/2 the time have male musicians playing on stage with them. I like them, don't get me wrong, just some of these being called 'girl groups' is kind of a stretch.

Fifty years only takes us back to 1970, and that was the year Diana left the Supremes, yet they lead OPs poll. My vote is for the GoGos. Played their own instruments and drugged out and fought as good as any all-male rock band. That’s IMPACT.

I did a search to see who gets cited as the best girl group, even beyond 50 years:
"With a whopping 20 top-10 hits, and 12 number one hits, The Supremes are Billboard's top girl group of all time. At their peak, The Supremes rivaled The Beatles, and they were undoubtedly Motown's most commercially successful group. Florence Ballard, Diana Ross, and Mary Wilson sang in a style that bridged the worlds of pop and soul, creating their own genre of music. While success wasn't instantaneous for the group, from 1964 onwards, they had a string of hits, including “Where Did Our Love Go?,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” “Come See About Me,” and “You Keep Me Hanging On.” In 1970, Diana Ross left the group, and in 1977 the group disbanded for good. The success of Diana Ross and The Supremes has been credited with paving the way for future African-American musicians to find their own commercial success. Meaning, that if the Supremes hadn't existed, music today wouldn't be the same.
