Let’s celebrate Hall and Oates

In all the years I’ve been here I don’t think I’ve seen a single post about this duo, let alone a whole thread. I absolutely loved them back in the day. Today I watched a recorded concert of theirs on PBS—lots of fun to hear the old hits.

Love this song.

LOVE them. Family Man, Everything Your Heart Desires, Method of Modern Love are lesser known hits that never get any airplay but are favorites of mine.

by Anonymousreply 2March 28, 2020 12:33 AM

Isn't the white one gay?

by Anonymousreply 3March 28, 2020 12:35 AM

I'm their greatest album. The masterpiece, "Beauty On a Back Street."

Some DL regular graced us with the tale of his sexual adventure with Daryl Hall. However, I remember nothing.

by Anonymousreply 7March 28, 2020 12:57 AM

I think we had a somewhat long thread about them once here.

by Anonymousreply 8March 28, 2020 1:33 AM

Love them. My favorite is “Rich Girl”.

by Anonymousreply 9March 28, 2020 1:36 AM

I have a black friend whose family was shocked to find out Daryl was white.

by Anonymousreply 10March 28, 2020 1:37 AM

i loved them but i remember in 1975 my only experience with crystal meth and going to their concert ,. I remember during "Sara Smile" i was thinking "Come on boys , lets pick it up a little"!

by Anonymousreply 11March 28, 2020 1:40 AM

It's a pity that Hall had some tragic plastic surgery.

OP, I link to a few threads about Hall and Oates. This one, being DL, is a discussion about their dicks.

They are excellent live, and Daryl’s House was great at showcasing other musicians.

This clip with Allen Stone and Daryl gives me chills;

I love their music. They have an exceptional catalogue of songs and their music has stood the test of time.

by Anonymousreply 21March 28, 2020 6:06 AM

It’s a bitch, girl.

by Anonymousreply 22March 28, 2020 6:07 AM

My absolute favorite song from the H&O catalog.

(Hated Paul Young’s cover of it.)

by Anonymousreply 24March 28, 2020 6:27 AM

How Does It Feel to be Back from the Voices album I loved. Too bad it wasn't a bigger hit and Oates sounded so sexy

by Anonymousreply 25March 28, 2020 6:36 AM

I can't go for that. No can do.

by Anonymousreply 26March 28, 2020 6:41 AM

I Cant go for That!!

by Anonymousreply 27March 28, 2020 6:59 AM

R27, are you also R26?

by Anonymousreply 28March 28, 2020 7:00 AM

R28 lol NO. I didn’t see past post r23!

by Anonymousreply 29March 28, 2020 7:03 AM

Daryl Hall wrote this for Diana and sang backup. He HAS to be gay with the ability to do this level of camp.

by Anonymousreply 32March 28, 2020 7:24 AM

R30: Sara Smile was written for Daryl’s girlfriend of 30 years.

by Anonymousreply 33March 28, 2020 7:26 AM

On "We Are the World," Daryl Hall's part came on right after Steve Perry's. Here's a "making of" video. Steve Perry (who had a harder part to sing) put Daryl Hall to shame. Steve sang his part multiple times, without struggle, hitting his high note effortlessly. Daryl Hall sang his part, multiple times, struggling mightily. Embarrassing.

Long clip, but Steve Perry --> Daryl Hall is at the very beginning.

I always find it funny they are basically have one line to sing, but had to use sheet music.

by Anonymousreply 35March 28, 2020 8:59 AM

Yeah.

I hear Kim Carnes is STILL working on her, "When wee-ee-ee..." line after 35 years...

by Anonymousreply 36March 28, 2020 10:07 AM

Abandoned Luncheonette is my favorite H&O album. I didn't hear it until 1976, when I think it was re-released. It and Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees were my big albums that spring and summer. Two albums with no bad songs.

[quote] I always find it funny they are basically have one line to sing, but had to use sheet music.

There was very little rehearsing for that project and they were basically handed the music and lyrics as they walked in the door.

Clearly you’ve never been part of a collective effort like that. They had to know when to come in, the lyrics, what harmonies to sing, when to come in as part of the chorus, how many bars to wait for other musical parts, cues, co-stars, etc etc etc

It’s not just, “hey Huey, you’re singing ooooh ugh, got it?”

by Anonymousreply 38March 28, 2020 10:21 AM

"Clearly you’ve never been part of a collective effort like that."

Excuse us, Miss Quincy Jones!!

by Anonymousreply 39March 28, 2020 10:24 AM

LOL 😁r39

by Anonymousreply 40March 28, 2020 12:23 PM

Thanks for this thread! I was obsessed with Hall & Oates as a tween and had a massive crush on Daryl. I still consider him to be one of the great unappreciated pop vocalists of the 20th century.

by Anonymousreply 41March 28, 2020 1:00 PM

Are they lovers?

by Anonymousreply 42March 28, 2020 1:40 PM

I love Darryl Hall's voice but sometimes the music wasn't up to it but he elevated everything. Some of their music is ridiculous fun though.

"Silk Degrees" is quintessential Yacht Rock: smooth, expertly produced, fantastic musicians, every song sparkling with a glamorous patina of cocaine.

Only a few H&O songs are really in that genre. "She's Gone" and "Sarah Smile" off the top of my head.

by Anonymousreply 45March 28, 2020 5:01 PM

Who said anything about genre, reading genius r45? The claims I made were "no bad songs" and "summer of '76." Billy Joel's Turnstiles was another great album that summer.

by Anonymousreply 46March 28, 2020 5:10 PM

[quote]Sara Smile was written for Daryl’s girlfriend of 30 years.

I don't think Daryl was even 30 years old when they recorded Sara Smile.

"Can't Go For That" is the one song of theirs that I still enjoy hearing.

by Anonymousreply 47March 28, 2020 5:16 PM

My favorite - the one I never tire listening to and not mentioned yet - is "Kiss on My List"

by Anonymousreply 48March 28, 2020 6:11 PM

They have an incredible catalog of hits ... has anyone ever tried to created a jukebox musical from them?

by Anonymousreply 49March 28, 2020 6:41 PM

"Live from Daryl's House" is a treasure trove on YouTube. Here's the full episode with the O'Jays. Most of the other videos are partial episodes.

I thought John was the gay back in the 80s, but heard he was straight and Darryl was bi.

Love their music❤️Esp. Rich Girl, Private Eyes, Sarah Smile, Man Eater and You Make My Dreams Come True (I always feel like dancing when I hear it).

I really liked “Voices”. I listened to it endlessly and thought Darryl had a really sexy voice, even though I did not find him physically attractive. The albums that followed all had their share of hits but that was the only one I liked from beginning to end.

by Anonymousreply 54March 28, 2020 8:26 PM

Hall and Costello were great too. Love this song!

I ❤️ these 2 bitches.

Everything your heart desires is such a GOOD song.

by Anonymousreply 56March 28, 2020 8:30 PM

Bought a $200 ticket to see them this summer IF WE SURVIVE! I hope there are refunds!

by Anonymousreply 57March 28, 2020 9:07 PM

Darryl Hall says he has chronic Lyme disease.

There was an interesting RS article years and years before the MTV grind made them uber famous. Darryl said that he had lots of sexual experiments with boys at a pretty young age and John wasn't his type because he was too short and dark. He also said that Rich Girl was actually written for a Rich Boy that he apparently had an affair with.

by Anonymousreply 58March 28, 2020 9:14 PM

Link please, R58.

by Anonymousreply 59March 28, 2020 9:15 PM

We've had sufficient, R49.

by Anonymousreply 60March 28, 2020 9:23 PM

His former wife had Lyme disease and died in 2019 from alcohol, COPD, heart issues and Lyme disease (contributing to her drinking and smoking.)

[quote] Are they lovers?

I thought they didn’t even like each other

by Anonymousreply 62March 28, 2020 9:23 PM

I always assumed Oates was gay, but, I admit that was mostly because of the ill-advised photo on the cover of the "silver" album, and because he looked like one of those latin twinks you'd see. I waited tables in Nashville a few years ago, and Oates was a fairly regular customer. He does not give out events slightest ping in person. He usually came in with his wife and son, who was late teens. He and his wife could not have been nicer. She is kind of dumpy, and not the glam model type you'd expect him to be with. They were both exceedingly down to earth and friendly.
