Chateau Marmont Fires Entire Staff

Because of the corona virus shutdown, Chateau Marmont in West Hollywod has terminated nearly all its staff.

Employees were not offered severance pay, continuations of health insurance, or assurances they would be hired back when the crisis ends.

Wouldn't be the first time people drop dead there.

Another area where the day of reckoning for the USA is coming. Workers rights.

by Anonymousreply 2March 27, 2020 8:35 AM

That area is ground zero for Covid in LA right now. Scroll down on this live map about half way and you will see a map of LA county. Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Brentwood are all clustered in one area. If you add all their numbers up it's larger than any other part of the county.

Someone is making money there, who is it? Why can't these businesses look after their employees, the people that enable them to exist, and plan for disruptions. I've eaten at Chateau Marmont many times and for the prices they charge it is inexcusable that they can't do more for their people in a time like this. I pray for a populist movement for worker's rights, we need to get this country back on track.

by Anonymousreply 4March 27, 2020 8:49 AM

I think Chateau Marmont is one of the most fascinating historic landmarks in American culture. I hope the place - as a place - can bounce back after this appalling show of viciousness on the part of its current owners.

by Anonymousreply 5March 27, 2020 8:51 AM

They have an unlimited supply of wannabe actors in that area R4. They know if they put up a sign for help wanted, they would have 2,000 beautiful people begging to work there the next day. Sad but true.

by Anonymousreply 6March 27, 2020 9:13 AM

I hope this crisis is a wake up call to all the docile workers in this country. If they'd only wake up and unionize, vote out every fucking Republican and half assed Democrat they could end this hyper capitalism nightmare. I'm not optimistic, it will most likely be a return to business as usual as we continue to devolve into a banana republic.

by Anonymousreply 7March 27, 2020 9:27 AM

CM is covering health benefits until 31 March (next Tuesday) which isn't much but is something.

Union hotels are doing better for their workers overall; that is another good reason to be a union shop. Workers at CM ought to have known this and fight to unionize. For all the wealth that place attracts and money it makes CM can afford to give its workers union scale and bennies.

Treating their employees so shabbily seems like something that could backfire big time on the Chateau. Everybody knows that a shitload of celebrity-related stuff goes on there - all the NDAs in the world aren't going to stop pissed-off and money-strapped ex-workers from spilling tea to whoever is willing to pay...

by Anonymousreply 9March 27, 2020 11:01 AM

Why fire them?

Why not just furlough them for a month or two, and then re-hire the same staff?

That's just dumb on management's part.

They're going to have to train a brand new team from top to bottom, rather than re-activating their current staff.

by Anonymousreply 10March 27, 2020 11:28 AM

Presumably some bright spark suggested: we can fire everyone and then hire much cheaper workers next time - everyone will be desperate!

by Anonymousreply 11March 27, 2020 11:57 AM

Letting everyone go is a way to get rid off certain employees without risking lawsuits or adverse claims. Yes, it does seem like cutting one's nose off to spite one's face, but it is done. When things pick-up and hiring begins best and brightest will be called first and maybe offered special inducements to return. The ones who weren't wanted won't be asked back, nor rehired if they apply.

Union busting in Hollywood who would have thought. Would bet my next Coronaviurs pay check the top management is a different union. What's good for upper management is not good for the lower wage workers. I worked in Hollywood and that actually happened. NO UNIONS for the artist, we will have to let everyone go if you push that! Quietly all the Producers who were pushing that were in a Producers Union.

Surely a union busting move

R8 Health coverage always lasts until the end of the month. They are canceling it, and probably would have ended it immediately if they could.

by Anonymousreply 17March 27, 2020 8:38 PM

The topic title screams “...Entire Staff.” But the body of the post states [quote]has terminated nearly all its staff.

Which is it?

by Anonymousreply 18March 27, 2020 8:42 PM

I thought the Congress aid packages have provisions to underwrite businesses who keep staff on?

by Anonymousreply 19March 27, 2020 8:45 PM

Those at the top doing the firing would still be staff.

by Anonymousreply 20March 27, 2020 8:45 PM

R18

Well place obviously isn't abandoned and boarded up; so some sort of staff must remain to keep things like HVAC and other systems going. Answer telephones or some sort of front desk staff. Then you still need (for now) some amount of administrative and other behind the scenes people, and of course security.

R7 - we had a virtual staff meeting today, and the conversation delved into if the world would change after this. I and another person said, no, people will forget and go right back to how they've always been, voting in the same idiots and having the same lack of preparedness. All the others - about 10 - disagreed. I mentioned we've had how many of these pandemics throughout history and what, exactly, has changed as a result? Nothing. Memories grow short, and people go back to what is easier or economically better for them. This hotel story exemplifies our collective mentality about things like this.

Meanwhile both Hilton and Hyatt hotel chains are stepping up and doing the right thing by their employees.

If one or both take advantage of stimulus money wouldn't begrudge either of them, they deserve assistance.

Wow, R15, you were NOT fucking kidding.

I looked up "chateau marmont rooms" out of curiosity, and was shocked. I've literally seen nicer rooms in Comfort Inns.

THIS is the "legendary Chateau Marmont"??

by Anonymousreply 26March 28, 2020 9:43 AM

[R26] It's not what the rooms look like

It's what they let you do in them.

History in the making, bitch.

by Anonymousreply 27March 28, 2020 9:51 AM

R27 is onto something

Chateau Marmont is entirely a creation of Hollywood/entertainment industry. Anyone who goes there from that crowd can surely afford something better, but it wouldn't be the Chateau.

That was my reaction when I first went there. Pitiful bar area, too.

Their outdoor patio is kind of cool. Lots of "beautiful people" when I went.

The interior has a very retro Spanish vibe. Hotel California-ish.

No one really goes there for the rooms. They go there with the hopes of meeting a celebrity. It dose happen, they like hanging out there from time to time. It's got that old Hollywood feel to it right no the Sunset Strip. Hidden behind all the new buildings and bright LED signs, you could actually miss it if you were not careful. The celebrates who do stay there book one of their private cottages not those cheap rooms. Those are for tourists.

by Anonymousreply 33March 28, 2020 10:42 AM

Chelsea Hotel was a shit pile. Apparently many of you do not enjoy "slumming" or even recognize it.

Was one of them LiLo? I think she lived there at one point.

by Anonymousreply 35March 28, 2020 1:08 PM

Well at least the have great amenities for 2020:

A 42 inch flat screen, an iPod docking station and a stereo.

Oh, and free WiFi.
