Cameo
A website where you pay celebrities a fee to record a short video personalized video for you. Seems 90% of the celebs on the site are B-List and below. A ton of them I had never even heard of. Also the site looks cheaply designed.
Has anyone ever used this service?

R1 I think most of the drag queens just joined because all their gigs got cancelled. It is a lot of reality tv people. There are a lot of fans out there who will pay for them. If they are going to pay $40 for a cheap t shirt (merch) then it would easily be worth that or more to get a 'personalized' message from one of the people they like to watch.

There are some people on there that surprise me because they shouldn't need the money.

If they really want this to work they need a category of controversial people and criminals. Like, if Charles Manson were alive he'd do it. And right now, you know OJ would. And who has done something embarrassing, but not illegal. Someone who's famously infamous. Maybe they got fired or exposed or arrested . Like Bernie Madoff.
Or think of a politician who suffered an embarrassing loss , maybe they ran for POTUS. Betcha Mike Huckabee would.... but who'd want him.

It's a great service if you're in on the joke. My boyfriend is a dancer and has a love for MGM musicals that he's kind of ashamed of. So for his birthday, I hired Ann Miller to send him a great big HELLO and she did a bit of a tap dance from her wheelchair and she sang From This Moment On and blew him a big kiss. She was fucking scary but fabulous. In a sequin wrap and turban. Only $95. We sent her a big tip later because she really put her whole heart into it. My boyfriend just turned 37 and he was delirious with happiness and glee. It was his favorite gift of the day. Even though I gave him something much BIGGER later!!!
I've also hired Jan Brady to say, Sure Jan and David Carradine to do some Kung Fu moves for my nephews. I admit I enjoy the campy factor of having these celebs do things they half ass are humiliated by. But Ann Miller was out of this world and Tori Spelling is a good buy too if you know anyone who wants to hear from her. She's sweet and works hard at being funny and sincere. I wouldn't hire Joey McIntire again though. He's expensive and lazy. But my older sister was pretty fucking amazed that he called her by name and sang a few bars of Happy Birthday. It's a great novelty gift. I want to hire a housewife, but Ramona is not available and she's the one I want!!!

I've used it twice. The first was John Ross Bowie to give a birthday shout out for a friend who was a big Big Bang Theory fan. He was doing it for charity, and only charging $50. He made a really sweet, personalized video (my friend is in Seattle, and this was two weeks into the lockdown). I couldn't have been more pleased.
The second time I splurged $100 for actor William Daniels (the original John Adams in the Broadway and film versions of 1776) for a thank-you message to an actor friend of mine. We met doing 1776 years ago. Daniels shared a story from his work on the original Broadway production. He's getting on in years, and there's something special about having a message from an icon you've looked up to for most of your life.
If you can match the right celeb to the right friend, it's a wonderful service.

R72 I have no connection to Cameo and wouldn’t buy one (cringeworthy), but the prices are optional. If someone thinks their time is worth X bucks and is happy that either people pay that, or they receive zero orders, then that’s their price, and the service is what it is. Waiting “days” doesn’t seem unreasonable providing it’s not more than a couple of weeks.

I bought a Cameo from Corbin Bernsen for my parents, because they're big fans, and both have been depressed lately due to COVID. His cost $75. Turnaround time was fast and the message cheered them up. Great experience.
I also bought a Cameo from Ryan Lochte, and that, predictably, was a disaster. He slurred his way through his greeting and wore sunglasses the entire time. I left a scathing review and he recorded another. For $50, it was a poor experience, but what else should I expect from such a hot mess like Lochte? I knew what I was getting into.

Before the virus, I used it several times to send warnings to coworkers.
It meant something to have Mrs. Kasha Davis, slapping a rolling pin hard against her other open hand, tell Bernice in a threatening baritone to STOP stealing the snacks I keep in my office for clients. It worked.
However, having Willam send an "if you're going to beat off in the men's room leave the stall door open and be ready to blow your colleagues" to a beefy married closet case who is notorious for his need to relieve himself around 10 am on Mondays backfired. He seems to have taken it as a serious come-on and now I'm having trouble getting any work out of my boys at the start of the week.

The majority of people who are or were famous are trying to earn a living, just as the majority of non-famous people are. Having been on a TV show or in a movie doesn't automatically make you wealthy. I think it's cool that they have this as a revenue stream.

Carole Baskin was trending on UK Twitter earlier today, as somebody had asked her via Cameo to do a birthday shoutout video for Rolf Harris and Jimmy Saville, which she did with complete conviction.
For those of you who don't know, Harris was a TV personality who was jailed for sexual assaults of underage girls in 2014. Jimmy Savile died in 2011, but it was later revealed that he had sexually assaulted many, many children.
I won't link to it. It felt exploitative and sad, for all kinds of reasons.

A lot of these people do conventions, and COVID put a halt on many of those. Not sure of it is as lucrative or not though. Some popular con draws can leave with garbage bags full of cash.

R126 Capt Glenn from BD Sailing Yatch is on there too! Heard he is sweet and gives a 3-4 minutes cameo.
Penn Jillette (magician) has been on since covid at $75. He misses the audience adoration. From the samples I've seen, which I believe are the whole thing, his lasts 20-30 seconds. SHeesh. His net worth is in the hundreds of millions btw. For $80 i could get a ticket to their Vegas show pre corona, so this ain't worth it.
I would buy a Nikocado Avocado (youtube mukbanger who acts crazy) if I was forced to buy any cameo.

R129 - I posted this on another thread when Mary Wilson started on Cameo and everyone thought it was embarrassing.
The only source I've been able to find about how much some celebrities make is for....Gilbert Gottfried. He charges like $350. He makes over $100,000 a month doing this.
“I’d say, ‘Well, I worked about 30 minutes today, talking into a phone, made $4,500, and now I’m exhausted and need to take a nap.’”
He does a lot of roasts of people, so maybe that's his sweet spot. Obviously he has increased his amount over time and is still raking it in.
Unbelievable.

[quote]I just received a Cameo video as an apology from a friend, delivered by the star of my favorite West End show. It was really cute, and made it difficult for me to stay mad.
I could see using it like that, saving myself from having to grovel at their feet. Send a celebrity to do it for you! Are the prices set by some central organization that vets celebs and decides what they'll fetch on the open market? Or do the celebs themselves just slap a figure on their ass and hope for the best.

R135- we decided our price and can change it whenever we want. I started at $30 and did well so I upped it to $40 and still did well so I went to $48 and things slowed down so I’m at $40 now. It’s pretty great. I’ve made over $1300.

When booking a cameo, you have some space to write about the person. So if you know their favorite episode/movie of that person's, you can tell them and they can share their memories of filming it...The person i was buying for had a favorite episode of Curb your enthusiasm so i mentioned it and Cheryl Hines told an awesome story about filming it. (she was doing them for charity). Makes it personal and gives the actor something to talk about...

Cameos are good because a) You're not annoying some celeb you admire and b) Well, I can't think of a 'b' but if you know the person you are sending it to and have reason to believe they would be attuned to that sort of thing they might be tickled. But truly if you want to contact a celeb and have a very good reason for doing so just write a witty letter to their agent and it will be passed on. Catch: Be 'witty'.

The ones who charge $999 don't get m/any takers. Felton being a major Harry Potter actor (which is as near as you can get to a Star Wars or Marvel persona) charging $499 makes it expensive enough to make him seem more "elite" than, say, one of the Weasley twins and enough for a bunch of family members to band together and pay for a Cameo as a birthday present.

We found out recently a friend of ours has put himself on there for $15. It's so awkward, he is just so desperate to be famous, but barely anyone knows who he is. He's had one review, who we're pretty sure is his boyfriend. A week or so ago he reduced his rate to $10. It's so weird, no one would think "oh I want a cameo from him". He's starting to become quite delusional about his fame. I feel bad for him in one respect, but also he's the kind of person who never gives a shit about anyone but himself, and will turn every conversation back to him, openly laughing and admitting that he's "high maintenance" and finds himself a more interesting topic to talk about. That kind of narcissism sadly does deserve a bit of cutting down to size.

What’s the point of this unless with your request you send a picture of yourself and/or the person it is for? Otherwise, the celebrity is basically just talking to the camera saying the person’s name with no clue what the person looks like and I don’t see how that makes it personal. At least at meet and greets they get to see the person they are talking too.

I both like it AND think it's a bit cringe, the same way I feel about fan conventions where you can pay to have a photo with/something signed by a celebrity.
On the one hand, it feels really grubby (and especially when you see some of the people at conventions who have massive queues and then some of them just sat there with no one waiting to see them, there is something so awkward about that though I guess at least with Cameo you don't get that direct comparison, other than the fee) however it's also giving the people who really like you an opportunity to 'interact' in a way they never normally would be able to, and they are paying for a service the same as any other.
I would probably do it if they had a guy on there who I really fancied, if they did it topless. Chris Hemsworth flexing while wishing me a happy birthday - sign me up!
