Totally random question re: Portia De Rossi in Arrested Development

I was watching Arrested Development last night and am curious about the stark facial changes on PDR that were clearly visible at the beginning of Season 4, but then went away later on in the season. An article online said something about the wig totally changing her face, but that can't just be it. She looked like she was wearing a fake nose. At the time, articles were talking about her having plastic surgery, but then later episodes revealed she hadn't. It must have been a deliberate choice by the production staff, as there's no way they didn't see how different she looked from the original character. But I can't really understand why they chose to show her so different, only to have her go back to her old look. Was it some inside joke on AD? Anyone know what that was about it? She looked so different for the first two episodes and then it was all back to normal.

She destroyed her face, that’s all.

She was really beautiful-cute when she was young. It’s a shame she has remade all her features. They were odd but charming.

It's like her mouth got longer/wider. That's what stands out to me the most.

Her former doppelganger Drea de Matteo wasn’t as pretty but she seems to have preserved her own facial features over the years and she is aging better IMO. I much prefer human face to Frankenface.

She must have used the same lower-face surgeon that Robin Wright uses. There’s something strange about the mouth build-out.

I was more wondering if anyone had any insight into whether the changes in the character's look were tied to some joke that never materialized on the show. There's no way they dressed her as that and didn't see how off the look was from the original character. And she had to have been wearing prosthetics. I actually thought it was Christine Taylor when I first saw her in season 4.

Was Season 4 the weird one with the idiotic structure? They apparently filmed it in weird fashion as well since all the actors seemed to be doing oh so important things elsewhere when in fact Arrested Development should've been their top priority.

Jason Bateman unfortunately has lost much of his boyish good looks as well. And obviously the sweet teen Michael Cera grew up to have a face only his mother could love.

I don’t think she filmed with the other actors, but performed separately and footage of her was spliced into the final scenes. In some scenes, you can see obvious stand-ins are used. I think, also, that the awesome Jessica Walter got frustrated by a stand-in. That came up in The NY Times article about tension on the set in the final season of Arrested Development, where many of the male actors tried to gaslight Jessica Walter about the behavior of Jeffrey Tambor. The season was re-edited for continuity after the original asynchronous storyline confused viewers. There is some really good material in the Netflix produced final season, but it was lost on some viewers because of the complex way they assembled the material. It was re-sequenced later and worked better, but still didn’t match the mastery of the first few seasons. The writing and acting was in top form in the first seasons, less so in the last. There was a very funny plot device that the actor Michael Cera’s appearance changed from stress, not his chronological true age. I think the actors worked very hard in the final series, with mixed results. It’s still worth watching.
