In 2011 he was beaten by a group of men, was it gay bashing?
It was only tool bashing, which is not only not considered a hate crime, but is encouraged in most jurisdictions.

This happened to singer-songwriter Alex Band years ago (in Michigan 2012-13, iirc).
He was out walking to a Minute Mart in the small hours when he got jumped by a dozen or more guys, kidnapped in their van, roughed up by them enough to fracture his spine, and then left to bleed out on a railroad track. Apparently this attack was completely unprovoked, and the assailants were just drunk rednecks bored and set off like dogs on sight of a rich pretty boy townie outsider wandering around their town. Nothing criminal or sexual was reported to have taken place.
And Alex is totally straight.
