STOCKS PLUNGE!

Nasdaq worst day EVER

Dow & S&P worst since 1987 eldergays, what happened in 1987 that made stocks drop? I thought repubs always say the 80s were "our best economic years"?

by Anonymousreply 7March 16, 2020 8:14 PM

I wonder what all the greedy rich sector of repubs who voted for Trump simply out of economic interest will say now? The Dow is only 4,000 points above where it was when Obama left office after the last week of drops

It’s really hard to believe that china’s numbers are legitimate. I think they definitely are on a downward trend (all the hospitals are clearing out) but I don’t buy they only had 80k cases and 3k deaths. Either all of the predictions of how bad this is gonna be are way off or China is lying.

When it’s all over the world needs to band together to hold China accountable.

WOW! This is huge!

CNN- Nearly seven million people living in a wide swath of Northern California, including Silicon Valley, are being ordered to shelter in place starting at midnight on Monday.

Along with San Francisco, which previously announced its order, residents in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Marin, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties, along with the city of Berkeley are being required to stay home, according to an order from health officials in those jurisdictions.

“This decision is exponentially difficult,” Santa Clara County Health Officer Sara Cody said, but added that a regional approach is necessary. “We know we need to do this.”

Health services, grocery stores, gas stations, banks, and food delivery services will remain open. Mass transit will stay open, but it is only to be used for travel to and from essential services.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced drastic measures, prohibiting gatherings across France, including family and other social gatherings.

The second round of the French elections will be also postponed, Macron said.

Earlier today, the city of Paris announced the closure of all public parks and gardens.

Macron said the country is “in a war” against the coronavirus outbreak.

“We are in a war… that’s why I decided that all reforms debated in parliament will be suspended,” he said. The government will draft a new legislation to face the crisis.

A new military hospital will be deployed to reduce hospital congestion, Macron said.

(How are they going to enforce a ban on family gatherings? Have the military knock on doors monitoring how many people are in the house?)

by Anonymousreply 41March 16, 2020 9:23 PM

a doctor on CNN now is saying he expects the government to implement incremental closings of our society. He said it wouldn't be palatable if everything got closed at once so doing it in stages makes it easier to digest

Those morons have picnics in the park during a pandemic. This is now banned and will be apparently fined. You're also supposed to print a piece of paper to justify what you're doing outside starting tomorrow at noon including walking your dog, if you don't have it on you and get controlled by the Police you'll be fined. This is going to be insane. Evidently they're doing this to make the mouth breathers and kids realize it's serious.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have left the hospital and are now self-quarantined at their residence in Australia as they continue to recover from novel coronavirus, Leslee Dart, a representative for Hanks, told CNN in a statement.

Hanks and Wilson announced they were diagnosed with COVID-19 and had been been hospitalized in isolation since last Thursday. They shared periodic updates on their illness and recovery on social media over the weekend.

The two were originally in Australia for pre-production on a film about Elvis Presley, in which Hanks is set to play Presley's manager.

I’ve even invited my estranged brother and his SIX children to move in with me. He is hesitant, but his family can’t survive without supplies for more than 30 days. Mom and dad are here, 5 other family members want to park RVs this week.

Best of all, while the grandchildren get to live INSIDE the house, while their parents have to stay in the motor home😉😉😉

COVID-19 basics:

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Some people infected with the virus have no symptoms. When the virus does cause symptoms, common ones include low-grade fever, body aches, coughing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sore throat. However, COVID-19 can occasionally cause more severe symptoms like high fever, severe cough, and shortness of breath, which often indicates pneumonia.

How long is it between when a person is exposed to the virus and when they start showing symptoms?

Because this coronavirus has just been discovered, the time from exposure to symptom onset (known as the incubation period) for most people has yet to be determined. Based on current information, symptoms could appear as soon as three days after exposure to as long as 13 days later. Recently published research found that on average, the incubation period is about five days.

How does coronavirus spread?

The coronavirus is thought to spread mainly from person to person. This can happen between people who are in close contact with one another. Droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes may land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby, or possibly be inhaled into their lungs.

Coronavirus can also spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects. For example, a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

How deadly is COVID-19?

The answer depends on whether you're looking at the fatality rate (the risk of death among those who are infected) or the total number of deaths. So far, influenza has caused far more deaths this flu season, both in the US and worldwide, than COVID-19. This is why you may have heard it said that the flu is a bigger threat.

Regarding the fatality rate, it appears that the risk of death with the pandemic coronavirus infection (commonly estimated at 3% to 4%) is less than it was for SARS (approximately 11%) and MERS (about 35%), but may be higher than the risk from seasonal flu (which averages about 0.1%).

However, the numbers circulating right now for this new coronavirus are likely to be adjusted over time, as more people are tested and reporting becomes more consistent.

Who is at highest risk for getting very sick from COVID-19?

Older people, especially those with underlying medical problems like chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart failure, or diabetes, are more likely to develop serious illness.

In addition, several underlying medical conditions may increase the risk of serious COVID-19 for individuals of any age. These include:

blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease, or taking blood thinners chronic kidney disease chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis any condition or treatment that weakens the immune response (cancer, cancer treatment, organ or bone marrow transplant, immunosuppressant medications, HIV or AIDS) current or recent pregnancy in the last two weeks diabetes inherited metabolic disorders and mitochondrial disorders heart disease, including coronary artery disease, congenital heart disease, and heart failure lung disease, including asthma, COPD (chronic bronchitis or emphysema) neurological and neurologic and neurodevelopment conditions such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy (seizure disorders), stroke, intellectual disability, moderate to severe developmental delay, muscular dystrophy, or spinal cord injury. Are kids immune to the virus that causes COVID-19?

Children, including very young children, can develop COVID-19. However, children tend to experience milder symptoms such as fever, runny nose, and cough. Some children have had severe complications, but this has been less common. Children with underlying health conditions may be at increased risk for severe illness.

Will warm weather stop the outbreak of COVID-19?

Some viruses, like the common cold and flu, spread more when the weather is colder. But it is still possible to become sick with these viruses during warmer months. At this time, we do not know whether the spread of COVID-19 will decrease when the weather warms up.

A new normal...

I feel like I struck a goldmine. Frustrated I have been unable to find sanitizing products since last week and down to one bottle of hand sanitizer, I dug deep into the closet and boxes. I found THREE family size bottles of hand sanitizer AND a mask! Must have stocked up from the days when I would rent a car to make Target runs. Also had many bottles of dish soap. I completely forgot them because I know for awhile now I have been buying those items as needed.

Whew, like winning the lottery. I putting 2 bottles on Ebay and retiring on the profit.

Amy and another senator to introduce bill to provide for mail in voting (among other improvements) to deliver the national election in November.

"The best way to ensure that this virus doesn’t keep people from the ballot box is to bring the ballot box to them. We must allow every American the ability to vote by mail. And we must expand early voting so that voters who are not able to vote by mail are not exposed to the elevated infection risks of long lines and crowded polling locations.

On Monday, we will introduce the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act of 2020 to help election officials meet this pandemic head-on. Our legislation will guarantee every voter a secure mail-in paper ballot and help states cover the cost of printing, self-sealing envelopes, ballot tracking and postage. Vote-by-mail is a time-tested, reliable way for Americans to exercise their constitutional rights, and it is the right response to this crisis."

Responding to the Kaletra discussion from the last thread:

At the beginning (maybe the third thread!) it was thought that liponovir/ritonivir would be an effective treatment because the virus has a protease tail. However, today I heard that in vitro testing has shown that it is unlikely that the safe dosage in humans would reach therapeutic efficacy. (I hope I haven’t mangled that too badly given my lay person status.) Anyway that is a major bummer and super disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 144March 17, 2020 12:41 AM

I found these beautiful words online, by someone named Catherine "Kitty" O'Meara.

"And then the people stayed home. And they read books, they listened listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the Earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the Earth fully, as they had been healed."

by Anonymousreply 145March 17, 2020 12:42 AM

Also from what I remember from the 87 crash was that it didn’t impact poor people until mid 1989. It was kind of trickle down. This seems much more based on the collapse of the actual economy in real times as opposed to the collapse of a bubble in the Economy that then eventually leads to recession.

“...nasal congestion, runny nose...”

by Anonymousreply 154March 17, 2020 1:02 AM

The Harvard reference above was relating to those who suffer mild coronavirus.

The three main and consistent symptoms are fever and cough, most common, and difficulty breathing next.

Mild symptoms, especially like a common cold, are more likely that than the other. But the point is if you have any respiratory symptoms these days stray the hell home and away from others as much as you can.

'UK now effectively locked down, although incompetent Boris basically it is just strong advice to "socially isolate" and avoid people as much as possible for 2 months.'

The UK is not locked down at all.

Boris has suggested people keep away from theatres and restaurants but the West End theatres only just took their own decision to close. All music venues are still open, as are huge nightclubs with 2k capacity. All bars and pubs and restaurants are still open, as are unis, colleges and schools. The proposed four month isolation for seniors has not been put in place. The Uk hasn't banned any flights from infected countries either.

It's St Patricks Day tomorrow and the pubs will be full of revellers countrywide. Brits can also still fly off to wherever will have them. Friends of mine just left for two weeks in the Maldives.

In a week, the cases here have soared from 319 with 3 deaths to 1550 with 54 deaths.

Special federal relief now on table 4 following industries:

-- Casinos

-- Cruiselines

-- Airlines

-- Hotels

-- Oil & gas (enacted)

The next congressional package -- on which work began today -- will be where all this is expected to be fought out.

How do we feel about our tax dollars going to bail out casinos and cruise lines?

by Anonymousreply 225March 17, 2020 5:43 AM

Bitches if you CAN get six weeks of stuff, you should do so. Poorer individuals, seek out inexpensive staples such as a few 5lb bags of rice, dried beans/chickpeas,_several_ cans of (cheap!) tomato sauce & cans of tomato paste, pasta, egg noodles, eggs, chili flakes, boullion, garlic salt, regular salt, cinnamon, oil, possibly a small package of sugar, a sack of flour, baking powder, baking soda, and a couple three-packs of yeast, a 5lb bag of unpeeled carrots, a bag or two of potatoes, a bag of apples. Toothpaste, acetaminophen.

That would run about $55 at Aldi. You could throw in a lot of chips, and crackers for $20 more.

by Anonymousreply 226March 17, 2020 5:46 AM

Don't worry about it, R224, Italy has kept supermarkets open.

If things get really bad (I mean REALLY bad), the Army can supervise food distribution, based on some kind of roster system (or something like that). This kind of thing is [italic]manageable[/italic]. It's not like the streets are impassable and that produce has stopped growing.

Meanwhile, here's some very promising news from Australia about a potential vaccine. It's using a new technology (Molecular Clamping) and is not based upon using a "killed" virus, so there is less danger - and no need for animal testing. That will take many months off it's testing phase (which is already advanced).

My mom’s county was just put under a “shelter in place” order until April 7th. No visiting friends, and only going to certain jobs deemed “essential”. Pet, grocery and hardware stores, and pharmacies, will still be open, though some with limited hours. (For instance, Safeway isn’t open 24-hours now.) You can still do those things.... it’s not like downtown was just VAPORIZED. And people can come in and out of the county to do essential things for family members, like a home bound senior.

I am worried for people who can’t afford to stay home from work, or just had their businesses close. I’m not freaking out - I just hope others can keep it together.

Second, I think people will be able to endure their quarantines better if they can drink at home and would be less likely to try to go to out. Our PA state stores are so heavily regulated anyway I don't think that keeping them open for very limited hours, limited number of people who could be in the store at a time, etc etc would have been much trouble to enact.

CNN-The global coronavirus recession is beginning

As restaurants, shops, airlines and factories shut down around the world, from New York to Paris and Madrid, economists are warning that a global recession is no longer a looming threat. It's here.

Dire economic data released by China on Monday showed that the country was pummeled by the coronavirus outbreak in January and February. The world's second biggest economy looks unlikely to recover any time soon.

Now, with governments and central banks in Europe and North America pursuing drastic measures to try to control the pandemic, Asia still on high alert, and financial markets in meltdown, a growing number of experts say that a global contraction is beginning.

"Whereas 10 days ago there was some legitimate uncertainty about whether the global economy was in the process of going into recession — 10 days later, there's no question that it is," David Wilcox, former head of research and statistics at the Federal Reserve Board, told CNN Business.

Like everyone, I am frightened more of the day than not. But I am trying really hard to be.... if not optimistic, objective. I know this will be really difficult and by difficult I mean fucking freaked right out.

One of the things I try to do is to take it one day at a time. Sounds cliched, but it is true. You'll go nuts imagining what might happen because there's no way to know.

I also try not to snark as usual on here (at least not as much.) Even in this situation there are a couple of posters I'd like to kill and a lot of uniformed or careless posting of "information" that doesn't inform but contributes to the fear.

One thing I do believe - deeply - is that each day is one day closer to normal life. That we all know is true.

Jared Kushner repeatedly advised President Donald Trump that the media’s coverage was exaggerating the severity of the coronavirus outbreak, according to a report from The New York Times.

In the early days of the outbreak, Trump downplayed the threat from the virus, and publicly accused the “Fake News Media” and Democrats of trying “to inflame” the situation.

The Times reports that Kushner, who was tasked with carrying out research into the coronavirus to help Trump decide what to do next, privately told Trump what the president then repeated publicly.

Top Japanese Olympics official Kozo Tashima has coronavirus in ominous 2020 sign

Japanese officials have been insistent on still hosting the Olympics this summer despite the outbreak of a global pandemic.

Now the country’s Olympic committee deputy chief has the coronavirus.

Kozo Tashima announced Tuesday he has tested positive for coronavirus in an ominous development with regards to Japan hosting the Summer Games status quo in July.

The 62-year-old Tashima had been travelling since Feb. 28, to Belfast, Amsterdam and the United States, to try to land Japan another major event — the 2023 Women’s World Cup. He returned home on March 8 and then began to experience symptoms.

The Olympics have not been canceled since 1944, when the games were called off because of World War II.

Baby tested for coronavirus after death at hospital

A baby boy is being tested for COVID-19 after dying in the Big Apple just days after being discharged from a hospital with a coronavirus-like infection, police sources told The Post.

The 1-year-old — identified by sources as Michael Kameo — had been in NYU for two days last week for an upper respiratory infection, sources said.

He was discharged on Saturday and found unconscious by his dad at their home on East 23rd Street at around 8 a.m. Monday, the NYPD said.

He was raced to Mount Sinai Hospital but pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m., police said.

Because of his symptoms, his body is being tested for COVID-19, with the results still pending, the sources told The Post.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, police said.

Another story on why gun sales are surging. Extra points for referencing The Walking Dead:
Betsy Terrell, a 61-year-old resident of Decatur, Georgia, said she thought for years about purchasing a handgun and decided to finally get one after seeing chaos at her local Costco, with long lines and people stockpiling goods. She feels the metro Atlanta area already has a lot of crime. She’s worried that if the economy tanks, crime will rise even more.
“I was beginning to see people acting oddly. That was a little unnerving,” she said. “I feel there’s potential political upheaval. … It’s scary. It’s only now I’ve felt this overwhelming need to arm myself to protect myself.”
Gun store owner Ed Turner: In the 27 years he’s been in business, he said, “I’ve never seen it like this. … This is self-preservation. This is panic. This is ‘I won’t be able to protect my family from the hordes and the walking dead.”

even people who have small fridge/freezer capacity should stockpile 6 weeks worth of food and supplies.

the less frequently everyone leaves their homes, the less likely there is to be transmission of the infection and the better the chance the country has of "flattening the curve" (i.e., not overwhelming the health care system).

4-year-old’s coronavirus symptoms worsen after taking ibuprofen

A 4-year-old British girl suffering from coronavirus-like symptoms grew worse after taking ibuprofen, her family said.

As health experts hotly debate whether the anti-inflammatory medicine should be taken to combat the contagion, Dan Collins of Bristol posted a dire warning on Facebook about his little girl Amelia.

“To those of you that have children please read. If your child has symptoms of corona virus, DO NOT give them ibuprofen,” Collins wrote.

“Amelia’s been unwell since Tuesday, cough, fever, cold. This morning she came into my room and got into my bed burning hot and not wanting to get up,” he wrote Sunday.

“Within an hour of giving her [ibuprofen] she dropped dramatically. She was panting while trying to breathe, her heart rate was very rapid, she couldn’t keep her eyes open, couldn’t lift her head up, her body was shaking, she started being sick on herself and her temperature had risen.

“We called back up and they sent out an emergency ambulance, once the paramedics got here they managed to bring her temp and stats down a bit, they’re still higher than normal but not dangerous high anymore,” Collins said.

“Now she’s back on [acetaminophen] she’s back to just being her poorly self. The paramedics only told us while here that were not to give her ibuprofen!”

Some top medical experts are warning against taking ibuprofen if the coronavirus is suspected.

While ibuprofen is used to treat pain, including from headaches and sore throats, along with colds, it “can have a depressive effect on parts of our immune systems” — a real danger for coronavirus sufferers, wrote Dr. Amir Khan, of Britain’s public health care National Health Service, in Al Jazeera.

“If we take medicines that dampen this immune response, such as ibuprofen, this can lead to us not fighting off the infection as effectively, potentially leading to a longer illness with a higher risk of complications,” he said.

Khan said alternatives for pain and fever could include paracetamol, commonly known as Panadol, or acetaminophen, which is the main ingredient in Tylenol.

French Health Minister Olivier Veran also tweeted over the weekend, “Taking anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, cortisone…) could be an aggravating factor of the infection. If you have a fever, take paracetamol. If you are already on anti-inflammatory drugs or in doubt, ask your doctor for advice.” But other health experts said they are not convinced that ibuprofen is harmful to coronavirus sufferers.

If you have a fever, take paracetamol. If you are already on anti-inflammatory drugs or in doubt, ask your doctor for advice.” But other health experts said they are not convinced that ibuprofen is harmful to coronavirus sufferers.

“Deeply concerned about this bold statement,” tweeted Muge Cevik, a scientist with the University of St Andrews Infection and Global Health Division, after Veran’s statement.

“There’s no scientific evidence I am aware of that ibuprofen [causes worse] outcomes in #COVID19.”

Diamond Princess passenger with coronavirus ‘never showed any symptoms at all’

A Utah man who was on board the coronavirus-stricken Diamond Princess cruise in Japan said he continues to test positive for the virus — even though he has “never showed any symptoms at all.”

Mark Jorgensen and his wife Jerri were among the 696 passengers who contracted the bug on board the ship, which was quarantined off the coast of Yokohoma. Jerri’s symptoms, he said, were quite mild and did not last long. And his were non-existent.

“We were tested because they considered me high risk, I’m a kidney transplant patient,” Jorgensen said on the FOX News program “Outnumbered Overtime.”

“And so, during the quarantine, they came to our room and tested us, and then the next night my wife started to have a little bit of a high fever and didn’t feel really well. By the next morning, that was gone, but they came and told us she was positive and took her to the hospital.”

Jerri was sent to a hospital in Japan where she remained for two weeks before returning home. Jorgensen was transferred between various hospitals in the US before being allowed to self-quarantine at home — where he has been for several days, he said.

“I never showed any symptoms at all,” he said on the program. “I tested positive continuously throughout the whole process but never had any symptoms.” He said he is tested for the deadly bug twice a week at home, where he is “social distancing” from his wife.

Last month, Jorgensen showed off his spacious room at the Travis Air Force Base where he was staying in California, while Jerri remained under care in Japan.

Have you ever been delayed for some reason and then when you finally got going you came across an accident or something and realize if you had left when you originally planned that it could have been you in the accident? Coronavirus doctor says lung scans for young patients were ‘nothing short of terrifying’

A Belgian doctor working to battle the coronavirus says he’s treated several seriously ill young patients — and their lung scans were “nothing short of terrifying,” according to reports.

Dr. Ignace Demeyer, who works at a hospital in Aalst, said an increasing number of people between the ages of 30 and 50 have presented with severe symptoms, despite having “blank medical records” which show no underlying conditions that would make them high risk, the Brussels Times reported.

“They just walk in, but they are terribly affected by the virus,” Demeyer told the Belgium broadcaster VRT.

He said that CT scans indicated they were suffering from severe lung damage.

“The images we took yesterday are nothing short of terrifying,” the doctor told the station.

“They are people who do not smoke, who have no other conditions such as diabetes or heart failure,” Demeyer added.

Belgium has reported at least 1,085 COVID-19 cases and at least five deaths since the virus emerged in China in December.

Worldwide, there have been more than 190,000 people infected as of Tuesday afternoon, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.

During a press conference without any physical presence of journalists, health agency director Jérôme Salomon added the number of cases had risen to 7,730, up from 6,633 on Monday, which is a rise of 16.5% in 24 hours.

Salomon said 699 people were in a serious condition, needing life support

A study released this morning said that for every reported case of coronavirus, there are 5 to 10 unreported cases. So if we have 5000 confirmed cases today, that means there are up to 50,000 cases out there. Of course, that number will continue to go up as more testing is done.

The UK has introduced 350L worth of economic measures, including a 3 month mortgage holiday for homeowners. I cannot help but believe we'll see this in most if not all countries. Even if Republicans don't want to do it, if every other country is, they will have a hard time justifying refusal. So there's that relief.

If they are confident they can re=open the country, the take-away from it is that a country can return to normal or something close to it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Good for us as we start to close down, knowing it's temporary.

Unless that light is a train of course.

I live in Belgium. The post from R403 has freaked me the fuck out! True, it is mostly the old and sick who are dying but EVERYONE is vulnerable! This will become more evident when we start to run out of ICU beds. Stay away from people as much as possible, wash your hands, and take everything that the Whitehouse says with a grain of salt. Or a few truckloads to be safe.

by Anonymousreply 433March 17, 2020 7:46 PM

All this has brought memories of my childhood I've tried desperately to forget. I had rheumatic fever at 9 years old. My feet didn't touch the floor for a year. I lived in my bed, under an oxygen tent. My dad moved my bed close to a second story window so I could look out when I felt strong enough. I watched my sisters and their friends play in the street. All I wanted was to be there with them. It became my goal.

I remember days and nights of trying to breathe. It was an all consuming, suffocating task to get from one breath to the next. Struggling to get to the next day. That was all I had to sustain me.

I tell you, my anonymous friends, we can get through this. You can survive this; for a month or two, or however long it takes. Life is about surviving moment to moment. Really it is.

Our world is very frightening right now. Fear will be your constant companion. Fear of losing, fear of never again doing the things you love. But fear will save your life today and the days after.

Do as you are asked to do. You are not alone in this. Look around at what is important to you; what you love most. Close your eyes and breathe.

I love you all; truly.

Waiting in glee to watch the worlds healthcare systems fall apart. It’s important to understand how serious this is but it’s another to spend your day talking of impending death and horror that is inevitable and the only thing we can do is lock ourselves inside for a year. The head of a hospital in the US state of Georgia has warned that supplies are running short after using five month’s worth of supplies in six days in the fight against coronavirus.

That comes amid growing concerns of equipment shortages in healthcare facilities across the US.

Phoebe Putney Health System CEO Scott Steiner told CNN that equipment at the healthcare provider’s flagship hospital in Albany, southwest Georgia, has been severely impacted by an increase in coronavirus cases.

The total number of recorded cases of Covid-19 in Georgia is now at 121. Of those, 65 patients are reported to be at the flagship Phoebe Putney hospital. At the same time, at least 115 others await test results.

According to the CNN report, Mr Putney believes that the Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia, has five more days worth of supplies despite being prepared with six month’s worth of equipment, such as protective gear, before the coronavirus epidemic

“We might have thought we were overprepared,” said Mr Putney. “But you just can’t believe what we went through from a supply standpoint.”

In comments reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (The AJC), the Phoebe Putney CEO said that the coronavirus outbreak cannot be compared to previous viruses such as SARS, swine flu, or Ebola.

He added: “You can throw in SARS and H1N1 and Ebola. There was Hurricane Michael – that was a big deal. But the thing is, Hurricane Michael came and went, and then you kind of pick up the pieces. We’re what, six days into this here. And it doesn’t appear to be slowing. Is it only a matter of time till all others feel the same?”

The healthcare provider has now turned to volunteers and donations, according to The AJC. That includes bleach supplied by chicken factories, and cardboard boxes provided by restaurants. Staff have also been identified who are able to sew masks if supplies run out.
I’ve noticed a pretty disturbing attitude a lot of people online (especially on reddit) have where they’re almost rooting for the virus.

by Anonymousreply 484March 17, 2020 11:58 PM

Does anyone know:

Can you get the virus repeatedly?

Can non-symptomatic person get a test?

What is the hospitalization rate?

by Anonymousreply 485March 18, 2020 12:30 AM

1) Can you get the virus repeatedly?

There's no proof you can. A few anecdotal cases but if it acts the way other coronaviruses do, no.

2) Can non-symptomatic person get a test?

It depends on the state you're in and your doctor connections. The wealthy seem to be able to get them, no problem. Also I think doctors can send them to outside laboratories if you pay for it.

by Anonymousreply 486March 18, 2020 12:32 AM

Thanks, R486.

My understanding about “flattening the curve”, simply means trying to spread hospitalizations over a longer period, so as not to overwhelm the medical system at one time. It doesn’t refer to reducing serious cases.

They are talking on TV about multiple, individual, people developing immunity, and thereby providing herd immunity to others. Not very confidence building..

Some good news:

A renowned research professor in France has reported successful results from a new treatment for Covid-19, with early tests suggesting it can stop the virus from being contagious in just six days.

Professor Didier Raoult from infection hospital l'Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire (IHU) Méditerranée Infection in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), published a video explaining the trials on Monday March 16.

Professor Raoult is an infectious diseases specialist and head of the IHU Méditerranée Infection, who has been tasked by - and consulted by - the French government to research possible treatments of Covid-19.

He said that the first Covid-19 patients he had treated with the drug chloroquine had seen a rapid and effective speeding up of their healing process, and a sharp decrease in the amount of time they remained contagious.

Chloroquine - which is normally used mainly to prevent and treat malaria - was administered via the named drug, Plaquenil.

The treatment was offered to 24 patients, who were among the first to become infected in the south east of France, and who had voluntarily admitted themselves to hospital for the process.

Patients were given 600mcg per day for 10 days. They were closely monitored, as the drug can interact with other medication, and cause severe side effects in some cases.

Professor Raoult said: “We included everyone who was in agreement [to be treated], which was almost everyone. Two towns in the protocol, Nice and Avignon, gave us [infected] patients who had not yet received treatment.

“We were able to ascertain that patients who had not received Plaquenil (the drug containing hydroxychloroquine) were still contagious after six days, but of those that had received Plaquenil, after six days, only 25% were still contagious.”

Chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine have previously been used to treat coronavirus patients in China, in ongoing Covid-19 clinical trials.

Kaletra, a US-based antiviral drug normally used to treat HIV, is another medicine that is being tested in the fight against Covid-19.

The remaining ignorance and flippancy is infuriating. The lack of widespread testing in areas of confirmed positive patients, and the INSANE amount of unnecessary exposure first responders are being subjected to.

I'm a bit agoraphobic since 9/11 happened outside of my bedroom window and I know that bc of that dust I'm going to have lung issues. I've been home since Tues of last week but that doesn't make a bit of difference because I have IDIOTS for family who've been mainlining Fox news so think this is nothing.

Yesterday I had a total blowout with my brother bc we have a younger sister working in respiratory therapy and she's quite scared at this point because the problem is in the protocols, they only outfit unless there's a confirmed case. She's the baby of the family and is healthier than most of our siblings but works 12 hr shifts at two hospitals which is a lot of exposure. But I'd layed into him and his ignorantly mocking the fuss around this. I know it hit him bc I'd heard about it from another sister who was like 'what did you actually say?'. I told him what he should've known.

I'm in a large county, but not densely populated in NW CT, but my pcp had their first positive yesterday am because I had to call about a routine matter bc of a positive test. Given how long we waited to acknowledge the problem swift, comprehensive and amply available testing needs to be done systematically at this point to curtail as much damage as possible.

I also dont understand why recovered patients or those who had shown no symptoms aren't having blood taken for the advancement of developing some type of preventive immunotherapy for critical patients.

I’ve been watching msnbc for election news tonight and my god how depressing. Maddow is practically salivating over dragging the worst case scenarios out of all of these professionals. If i only watched this shit I’d be hoarding too, because it sounds like society as we know it will be over forever in a week.

Why is it so hard to shut down all of these hot spots where the virus is clearly spreading from?

by Anonymousreply 516March 18, 2020 2:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 547March 18, 2020 4:44 AM

R543, there is no way to totally ensure you'll escape the virus, but ordering in drastically reduces the number of touchpoints that could transmit it, vs. going to a store or restaurant.

When you order in, you're not opening your apartment lobby's door to leave, touching the restaurant door handle, being seated next to people who might be ill, assuming that the silverware, glasses, chair and table have been sanitized sufficiently, putting your phone down on a germy surface, possibly touching the restroom door handle, touching the server's communal pen to sign the check, etc., etc.

And when you order in, you're giving yourself a break, and you're helping restaurants and their employees to survive.

I mean, let's keep our wits about us here.

by Anonymousreply 548March 18, 2020 4:46 AM

R543, I wonder the same thing about people packing groceries that are delivered. I wish the stores and restaurants would make their protocols explicitly clear.

That said I read today the delivery services are so overwhelmed it was giving them problems - and old people, who really need it, were suffering. So I guess I just duct tape my nose and mouth and go to the grocery store.

by Anonymousreply 549March 18, 2020 4:48 AM

R548, I wasn't advocating going to a restaurant instead. A- All the restaurants are closed to customers and only doing takeout and delivery and B- Even if they were open, it doesn't solve the issue I'm concerned about: the people making my food.

Talk about wits.

by Anonymousreply 550March 18, 2020 4:51 AM

R543, R544, I feel the same. I bought a lot of canned goods weeks ago; and my last take out last week which I froze. But I’m not going to order new take out again until things change - either I learn something from testing, or the infection peaks or something.

by Anonymousreply 551March 18, 2020 4:52 AM

I know this is minor, but my hands are killing me! I wash them several times a day, plus apply hand sanitizer if I'm out. My skin is so dry and getting chapped that it's painful. I apply moisturizer frequently throughout the day but that doesn't help for long.

by Anonymousreply 552March 18, 2020 4:53 AM

I think the problem is they don’t have enough employees to cover the pickup orders because some stores are doing zero pickups that were doing them last week. Something is fishy there.

When you go to the store the pickup spots and lines are empty.

I think they just don’t have the staff.

by Anonymousreply 553March 18, 2020 4:54 AM

Yeah, that's how I feel, R551. I was curious if I was just being super paranoid and how other people were feeling about it. THey keep pushing the take out/delivery thing, but unless the prep cook is in a hazmat suit, don't be around my food.

by Anonymousreply 554March 18, 2020 4:54 AM

I took my rubber gloves, clorox wipes and lysol spray to town today. I had to pay a bill, and pick up a prescription. I had to go into a business to pay my bill, and wore my gloves, didn't sit in their chairs, I used my own pen, and once I left, i threw away my gloves in the trashcan outside. Before I got in my vehicle, I sprayed myself down with lysol spray, and wiped down my pen and the lysol spray can with a wipe. I picked up my prescription via the drive thru, while wearing a second pair of gloves; I put my gloves in a plastic bag to throw away in my dumpster. Once I got home, I sprayed down the inside of my truck, the bag my prescription was in, and myself before I went inside.

I also changed my clothes as soon as I went in. Maybe I'm doing too much, but better to be safe than sorry. And yes, people looked at me funny.

by Anonymousreply 555March 18, 2020 4:58 AM

Last week I posted it was strange we did not hear of any coronavirus in NYC considering NYC is the hub of international travel. I still believe, as I did last week, the numbers they are telling us are false. How can they give us a number of infected when they are unable to test so many that have the symptoms?

by Anonymousreply 556March 18, 2020 4:59 AM
Even if they were open, it doesn't solve the issue I'm concerned about: the people making my food.

What I'm saying is, there is no 100% guarantee you won't get the virus, even if you sit in your apartment miserable alone eating peanut butter sandwiches for two months. But if doing that, and living monklike in constant terror, will get you off, go to it.

Getting delivery drastically reduces the risk vs. leaving your apartment for food. But don't listen to me, listen to an Ivy League professor:
It’s hard to get the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus through an order of chicken and broccoli. “The risk of contracting coronavirus through food has been, and is, extremely small,” says Martin Wiedmann, a professor of food safety in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University.
But what about all the hand contact involved in delivery? Passing off tips, toting food through vehicles, all those containers?Experts and restaurants assure us that if everyone in the food chain takes common-sense precautions, the coronavirus won’t spread through delivery — whether it’s from your favorite Thai place or grocery delivery, such as InstaCart or Amazon Prime.
“Personally, I won’t make any changes with how I receive food. If I order a pizza, I’m not going to leave the pizza box outside and bring the pizza in with my hands,” says Wiedmann. “Am I going to wash my hands before I eat pizza with my hands? Yes.”

I love you, R555.

I’ve prepared well in advance, but I can’t bring myself to wipe-down my mail. Neither the exterior envelopes, nor the interior papers or products. It just seems too impractical, even though I know that the 1918 flu was transmitted, in some cases, by the mail. Like, do I then sanitize the tabletop that I opened them mail on? Then change my clothes? And clean the things the clothes touched? Etc. I let my cleaning woman go, so I’m inside making things dirty and cleaning up after myself; so to be disinfecting the mail and everything it touches just seems too impractical. I can’t see being able to keep that up for weeks, so I’m not even trying.

R543, do you have a food thermometer? If you're really worried about takeout, reheating your food to 165 degrees in an oven (165 is overkill, actually) and keeping it at that temperature for about ten minutes (overkill again) is more than enough to deactivate an enveloped virus. It will limit what you can order, of course, but it will be better than peanut butter.

by Anonymousreply 571March 18, 2020 6:56 AM

^^I should have mentioned that the reason I specified an oven is that microwaves heat unevenly. By the time you get every part of the inside of a burrito, for example, to register 165 in a microwave, the outside and ends are going to be like leather.

Reheating, tightly sealed to prevent water loss, in a 325 or 350 oven is the way to go.

Moron Extraordinaire Juliette Lewis was on IG completely freaking everyone out by shrieking about the Los Angeles Animal Shelters closing down and how they were going to euthanize all the dogs (no mention of the cats; I guess she doesn't care). And she was begging people to go down and foster before all the animals were put down.

One 10 second check of the LA Animal Shelter homepage not only mentions that, while they are closing to customers (meaning no adoptions and no drop offs), the animals will be fed and cared for the same as always. They just don't want the public there.

But it didn't matter. Juliette had the dumb fucks who follow her in a lather, despite the fact that several people pointed out what was really going on. One shrieking harpy was screaming at everyone that they should shut up and foster. We tried to explain that, since the shelter was closed to the public, perhaps she could suggest how one might actually foster without having access to the animals as the SHELTER WAS CLOSED. Didn't matter.

Actors really should just shut the fuck up and thank god they have money and won't be destroyed by this. They help no one.

A good friend of mine sent this to me tonight (I've deleted identifying information to protect his identity and deleted excerpts to keep within DL's posting limit.): As many of you know, _______ is an ER physician at __________. Besides treating the first ________patient who died this weekend, he is trying to stay on top of what the virus means to all of us. It is not my intention to panic or spam anybody, but there is so much information floating out there right now that I wanted you to hear _____'s take on this potentially deadly situation. Shortages of equipment and hospital facilities are a major concern. The ER doctors are already having to reuse their masks and they don't yet know if the masks are effective, as there is evidence that this virus may be aerosolized, meaning that even if you have a mask, your risk of infection is enormous. Other protective personal equipment is also in very short supply. _______, which is a level 1 trauma center, has only 11 unused ventilators. The ER staff knows that within days they will be faced with having to make life and death decisions: Who gets the last ventilator and who is left to die? Trying to keep the hospital staff from becoming infected is impossible. And _______ has no available beds, as they were virtually 100% full before this crisis hit. At the present rate of infection, the entire United States will likely be out of hospital capacity in the next couple of weeks. And it won't take that long if our hospitalization rates come anywhere close to approaching Italy's 50% rate. I realize some of you are reading this and thinking it is not that bad, or you have a relative who works in a hospital with no cases, or we cannot believe anything the government tells us. I get that. But get this — the medical professionals and other experts who are on the front lines are scared to death. _______ will not let us see our grandchildren, because they could easily be carriers and because of our ages we are vulnerable. One of the coaches who works with ________has a stepson who has a PhD. in immunology and is a professor at Cornell. Yesterday, he called his mother, who is our age, and all but ordered her not to leave her home until this is over. He said that for older people this is the worse infectious disease he has ever seen. A lot of people are talking about the comparison to the N1H1 virus, but that is an apples-to-oranges comparison. While some 68 million people got N1H1, it had a mortality rate of less than 0.3%. Also, it was similar enough to seasonal flu that most infected people had bodies that could create an immune response. The Wuhan virus or COVID-19 is new and no one on planet earth has a predisposed immune response. Also, 68 million people got H1N1 over an entire year. We’re at over 3000 cases of COVID-19 and just yesterday we were at 1,700 cases. If it doubles daily as some epidemiologists worry, we’re only a week or two away from more than a million people getting it. With a 1% and possibly higher mortality rate, this virus will kill more people while infecting fewer people than H1N1. So please do not use that as a comparison. More disconcertingly if he infection rate approaches the N1H1 infection rate the number of deaths will be staggering. Just because it has not impacted you and your community yet does not mean it won’t. It also doesn’t mean it will, but this is one time to be safe rather than sorry. So hunker down for the next couple of weeks and get reacquainted with your family, because the difference between you staying home versus you ignoring the experts' advice and hanging out in crowds could be the difference between a few thousand deaths and a few hundred thousand.

by Anonymousreply 579March 18, 2020 7:26 AM

R579, I'm sure you think you're being helpful. You're not. Especially with unsubstantiated shit like this:
The ER doctors are already having to reuse their masks and they don't yet know if the masks are effective, as there is evidence that this virus may be aerosolized, meaning that even if you have a mask, your risk of infection is enormous.

Now go answer that chain letter.

by Anonymousreply 580March 18, 2020 7:31 AM

It's not a chain letter, R580, though it does come from the ER doctor's parent rather than from the doctor himself. And the aerosol claim is substantiated. If this results in even one person changing behavior to prevent the spread of the virus, then I've helped.

Personally I’m taking the risk and taking a flight this weekend. I’ve been super cautious so far barely leaving house. But the bus I have to take is more dangerous than the plane. Right now it looks like 14 seats out of 200+ are occupied - so plenty of space between people and relatively few potential infected people. The air filtration on planes is apparently one of the best.

Not ideal and most should avoid. But in my risk assessment, it’s a pragmatic risk. And it gets me out of a hot zone. And allows me to be near loved ones should they need help.
