"In this extremity of our city's suffering and tribulation the venerable authority of laws, human and divine, was abased and all but totally dissolved, for lack of those who should have administered and enforced them, most of whom, like the rest of the citizens, were either dead or sick, or so hard bested for servants that they were unable to execute any office; whereby every man was free to do what was right in his own eyes." -- Giovanni Boccaccio

Thereās angst at the glitzy downtown hotel where Rudy Gobert ā the NBA star who tested positive for coronavirus ā and his team the Utah Jazz recently stayed when they were in New York.
Insiders tell Page Six that ā after learning on Wednesday that Gobert has the illness ā staff at The Dominick Hotel in Soho were so perturbed about an apparent lack of concern on the part of the hotel management that some of them called their unions for help.
The team was in town to play the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on March 4th and stayed at the hotel on March 2nd and 3rd.
But the hotel ā formerly the Trump Soho ā told Page Six Thursday in a statement, āPrior to the teamās March 11 announcement that one of its players tested positive for the novel Coronavirus, The Dominick had published and distributed new operating procedures which addresses precautionary measures and had implemented elevated cleaning practices.ā
It added, āWe continue to be vigilant in maintaining the highest level of safeguards for the health and well-being of our guests, employees, and visitors.ā
Gobert apologized on Thursday for his careless behavior before he knew he had the disease. On Monday ā apparently as a way to mock the NBAās decision to keep reporters six to eight feet from players ā Gobert had made a point of touching every reporterās microphone or recording device during a press conference.
On Thursday he said on Instagram, āI would like to publicly apologize to the people that I may have endangered. At the time, I had no idea I was even infected. I was careless and make no excuse. I hope my story serves as a warning and causes everyone to take this seriously.ā

Quarantined couple die of coronavirus two hours apart in Italy
An elderly Italian couple who had been married for 60 years died two hours apart of the coronavirus while under lockdown ā and their son is heartbroken that he was not allowed to visit them one last time, according to a report.
Luigi Carrara, 86, and Severa Belotti, 82, were confined to their home in Albino, in the northern province of Bergamo, for eight days without medical help, according to their son Luca Carrara, the Daily Mail reported.
Carraraās father, a retired bricklayer, was taken to a local hospital on Saturday, while his mother was taken there the following day, the son told the daily Corriere della Sera, the UK news outlet reported.
His parents died on Tuesday ā one at 9:15 a.m. and the other at 11 a.m., according to the report.

Coverage of how devastating the dotard's work last night was:
Donald Trump, the US president, sparked the chaos when he declared a 30-day ban on flights from Europe, excluding the UK and Ireland in what was dubbed the āmost expensive speech in historyā. The presidentās announcement prompted immediate confusion and he was forced to clarify that the restrictions would apply only to people, not goods.
The CBOE Vix index ā Wall Streetās āfear gaugeā ā hit a post-crisis high.
Paul Krugman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist, said Mr Trumpās travel lockdown was āstupid beyond even my wildest fantasiesā as there are already more than 1,200 US coronavirus cases.
When US trading opened, stocks instantly crashed by enough to trigger ācircuit-breakersā for the second time in a week, prompting a 15-minute suspension to trading. As activity restarted, the indices continued to fall, with the benchmark S&P 500 entering bear market territory and ending a record-breaking 11-year run of gains.

President Donald Trump has become the first world leader to suggest postponing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as the coronavirus pandemic spreads.
""This is just my idea ā¦ Maybe they postpone it for a year," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, 134 days before the opening ceremony is scheduled to take place in Tokyo's Olympic Stadium. "
Trump added that delaying the Olympics by a year would be a better option than holding it with no crowds. However, he said he would not relay the message to Japanās Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, according to Japanās public broadcaster NHK. The pair held telephone talks Friday Japan local time.
In response to Trumpās comments, Japanās Olympics minister, Seiko Hashimoto, stressed the preparations for a āsafe and secureā Games was still underway.
āIām aware of President Trumpās remarks, however, neither the IOC nor the organizing committee has considered any postponement or cancellation of the Games," she said.
Trumpās latest comments came as the Olympic flame lighting ceremony kicked off in Greece Thursday, and as International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said Tokyo 2020 would go ahead as planned.

"I'm not the only one," he said. "There's a bunch of us from the Diamond Princess ... that are still in the same boat I'm in."
A retrospective study published Wednesday in medical journal The Lancet found that, among nearly 200 hospitalized coronavirus patients in China, viral shedding ranged from eight to 37 days among survivors, with a median of 20 days.

There must be far more cases out there in the general population in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, then the official stats would suggest. Take the junior Health minister in the UK, Australia's Home Affairs Minister, Trudeau's wife, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson for a start.
There seems to be far too many high profile people with it. High profile people are a very low percentage of the general population, but well over-represented in the COVID cases.
I know they interact with a lot of people, and are coming and going from overseas, but a lot of everyday people do to.
Either these high profile people with the virus are really unlucky, or corona is more prevalent then the official stats would suggest.

The first case of someone in China suffering from Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, can be traced back to November 17, according to government data seen by the South China Morning Post.
Chinese authorities have so far identified at least 266 people who were infected last year, all of whom came under medical surveillance at some point.
Some of the cases were likely backdated after health authorities had tested specimens taken from suspected patients.
Interviews with whistle-blowers from the medical community suggest Chinese doctors only realised they were dealing with a new disease in late December.
Scientists have been trying to map the pattern of the early transmission of Covid-19 since an epidemic was reported in the central China city of Wuhan in January, two months before the outbreak became a global health crisis.
Understanding how the disease spread and determining how undetected and undocumented cases contributed to its transmission will greatly improve their understanding of the size of that threat.
According to the government data seen by the Post, a 55 year-old from Hubei province could have been the first person to have contracted Covid-19 on November 17.

After a month off from the gym in November, I went back full-force. After three days of touching machines and weights and not being unusually careful about handwashing, I got what I thought was a bad chest cold. But it was unusually severe and long, and it involved a feverāI never have fevers, but this went away and came back for more than a week.

15 min - CNN. EVERYTHING the administration is saying is a lie.
Confusion over the availability and criteria for testing is leaving sick people wondering if they're infected From CNN's Ashley Fantz, Scott Bronstein and Drew Griffin
Samples being tested for respiratory viruses are pictured at Leeds General Infirmary in Leeds, England, on Thursday. Samples being tested for respiratory viruses are pictured at Leeds General Infirmary in Leeds, England, on Thursday. Credit: Danny Lawson/Pool/AFP/Getty Images A group of first responders in Washington state, a scientist in California, a woman at an assisted living facility in Florida -- all worried because they believe they might have coronavirus but say they can't get tested.
They and many others tell CNN they're suffering symptoms associated with Covid-19, and are worried they may have come into contact with someone who has the virus. They are angry and frustrated after trying to get tested, only to be turned away.
Their stories came into CNN's tip line even as Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday told CNN's morning show, "New Day," that anyone with a doctor's order could get tested.
"There's no barrier ..." Pence said. "Make no mistake about it, we're making steady progress." A primary care doctor in Massachusetts said Pence's assertion that anyone with doctor's orders for testing can get it is "totally false."
There is strict criteria for testing: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is only approving testing for people who are critically ill, have been exposed to an infected patient, or who have recently traveled to certain heavily impacted countries outside the US.
Even if a patient is approved for testing, there just aren't tests on hand to use, said the physician, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
"Even if the patient were around and exposed to someone coughing, sick, sneezing, I cannot give them a coronavirus test," the doctor said. "We are being crippled by our department of public health and the CDC on our ability to combat this pandemic."

[quote]Either these high profile people with the virus are really unlucky, or corona is more prevalent then the official stats would suggest.
Well, the official stats only list those people who have been tested, which, in the U.S. is hardly anyone. So of course it's much more widespread than those figures suggest.
For example: As of yesterday, five people in Ohio had tested positive.
Based on that and "evidence of community spread," the Ohio Health Dept. estimated that 117,000 Ohioans are currently infected.

The suspension until further notice affects "all public gatherings of Church members" including worship and conferences, a letter to members said.

R162 The offical numbers for Australia are correct apart from a couple that may have gone under the radar.
Most of the cases have been imported from mainly China, Iran and the U.S. Others from other parts of Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson & Peter Dutton all picked up the virus in the U.S. - that has been established.
Other cases have been from people who came into close contact with someone who had been overseas (i.e. live in the same house).
There are a small number of people with whom Australian authorities are working with to determine where they picked up the virus as they have not been overseas and have no known contact with anyone who has recently returned from overseas.
The number of these cases are very small and with further investigation will in most cases locate a 'contact'. Over 30,000 Australians have been tested. There is no evidence the disease is running rampant in the country = the medical system would have picked it up. Thats not to say that in a weeks time cases may triple but for the time beginning everything appears to be fine.
Also, large gatherings of 500 or more are banned from next Monday as a protective matter to try and limit as much as possible local transmission before more drastic measures need to be introduced.

They're generally only testing people who have symptoms, and I think you can go several days without testing positive even if you do have it. They may simply be waiting for a time when the test would be more accurate.

Iām still shocked that Chicago banned gatherings of 1000 or more yet will continue with school. Most kids in the city take public transportation to school, when outside of walking distance, so thatās thousands of additional carriers roaming the city and passing each other.

My husband is the GM of a tourism attraction in NYC. Today he has to tell the employees (over 100 of them) that they are closing for the next 30 days, if not longer. They will be furloughed, so not getting paid. This will devastate many of them, as there are lots of single parents, etc.
It's heartbreaking, as there's nothing more he can do. The employees are eligible to apply for unemployment with the State of NY, but that will take weeks (usually 6) to get their first check, which will only be a couple hundred $ per week anyway.
This is bad.

An actor kid I know mother posted this today on FB (regarding testing):
Ocean came home from school early yesterday with a fever and a migraine, body aches, and slight congestion. It reminded me of my recent flu symptoms. I tried to make an appointment for him with Kaiser with their app, but based on the symptoms they only would give us a phone appt to keep us from coming in the office (Iām still waiting for them to call me!) So I took him to Urgent Care. I noticed a sign on the door that says WE ARE NOT TESTING FOR CORONAVIRUS- I took him in (we wore masks) They tested him for Influenza A & B - both came back negative.
I asked why we couldnāt test for Coronavirus and this is what I was told: Our labs have not sent out tests. Quest says they will soon be getting a million tests but even once we get those it will take a week to get results back. I asked āwell canāt you swab him now and seal it up to send once you have tests?ā She said āwe have not been told how to swab, where to swab, or how many swabs to use. Mostly though we donāt have any insurance codes to put it in the computer.
There is no way to order the test yet. You have to be in a hospital or go to a county health officeā They told me to take him home and quarantine him, which has been a challenge. I checked the Ventura county website yesterday and only 77 people have been tested in a county of almost a million people! Why???? My friend Marla encouraged me to post about it on Auggieās socials and I did. It seems like itās getting some attention. Maybe we will see change soon if more people speak out demanding for access to tests! Because the way this is being handled right now is UNACCEPTABLE! How can we stop the spread of a disease if we donāt even know who has it?

"Communities will become immune to it and thatās going to be an important part of controlling this longer term. About 60 per cent is the sort of figure you need to get herd immunity. Our aim is to try to reduce the peak, broaden the peak, not suppress it completely; also, because the vast majority of people get a mild illness, to build up some kind of herd immunity so more people are immune to this disease and we reduce the transmission, at the same time we protect those who are most vulnerable to it."

The Hong Kong Hospital Authority announced the findings after studying the first wave of patients who had fully recovered from COVID-19, the South China Morning Post reported.
Three people have died of the illness in the former British colony, which has so far recorded 131 confirmed cases. Among them, 74 people have been discharged.
Dr. Owen Tsang Tak-yin, medical director of the authorityās Infectious Disease Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung, said that of about a dozen discharged patients examined, two or three were unable to function as they had previously.
āThey gasp if they walk a bit more quickly,ā Tsang told reporters Thursday, according to the news outlet. āSome patients might have around a drop of 20 to 30 percent in lung function [after recovery].ā
Lung scans of nine infected patients at the hospital suggested they had suffered organ damage.
But Tsang said it had yet to be determined whether they would develop pulmonary fibrosis, a condition in which lung tissue hardened and the organ could not function correctly.
He added that patients can perform cardiovascular exercises to improve their lung capacity over time.
Coronavirus patients have been treated with Kaletra, a medication originally used for HIV/AIDS; hepatitis C drug Ribavirin; and interferon, according to the South China Morning Post.

Yesterday we had a joint news conference in my home town, with the County Dept. of Health, the Mayor's office, local hospitals and churches participating. I expected to hear that we now had the first case of Corona in our community, but not so. A very aggressive plan was announced to keep the city and county safe, and I was very impressed by the plan of action, and actually felt hopeful. Last night I got my first good night's sleep in several weeks.

Just saw a report on CNN concerning Iran. As reported here on DL, they are digging mass graves in the middle of the night to bury the dead. The graves are the size of football fields and are deep and large enough to be seen from space. Think about that for a moment. The numbers from Iran are false! The numbers from China are false! The numbers from the US and UK are false! Please wake up people!!!

This morning, my 10-year nephew was rushed to the hospital in Luxembourg by ambulance. He passed out in front of his mom with a high fever. Based on his symptoms, the medical staff feels that he may have the virus. However, they decided not to perform a test because he is not considered in the "at risk" age group. Nevertheless, the entire family is now under quarantine for 14 days. 7 other kids from his school are also under quarantine with their families. Fortunately the school has been closed for several days now. He was released and is resting at home. Although his fever was under control, it is beginning to rise again. The doctor advises the family to stay at home due to the quarantine. Needless to say, my sister-in-law and her husband are freaking out. My husband is freaking out And now I am freaking the fuck out

I'm in the Cleveland area and there have been a handful of cases (identified) here. There are estimates that there are about 12000 infected people in Cuyahoga County. I live in Rocky River, which is one of the more upscale communities around here , and since a lot of the residents are health professionals, as well as people who travel for work, I'm wary of patronizing the businesses here. I'm thinking of driving all the way to blue collar Lorain County to do all my shopping. They have a Walmart which closes at 1AM, so I plan to do my shopping around midnight to avoid as many people as possible. Then I'll spray all my purchases with Lysol and let them sit for 3 days before using them. I'm so glad I work at home.

Will this maybe cause people to take their government seriously for at least a while? Leadership during a crisis can make an enormous difference between a bad situation and a disaster. Maybe shit like "her emails" look less important when we wind up with a President that doesn't want widespread testing because it might affect his re-election chances?
This is what government is for, to provide stability, and institutions to deal with situations like this. Maybe even the anti-government, libertarian types will relent a bit?

I would love to live in Cleveland right now. A huge world class hospital that developed one of the first tests for the virus. Small population with top notch hospital care and disproportionately high number of health care workers. And easier to self isolate than NYC. Itās really the ideal city to be in right now - other than Rochester, MN (and I would choose Cleveland over Rochester MN any time)
This whole thing has made me really consider the quality and accessibility of good health care. While NYC has top rated hospitals, the accessibility and disproportionate volume of patients makes it less attractive than a place like Cleveland,

Reporter: Thank you, Mr. President. Yamiche Alcindor from PBS NewsHour. My first question is you said that you don't take responsibility, but you did disband the White House pandemic office, and the officials that were working in that office left this administration abruptly. So what responsibility do you take to that? And the officials that worked in that office said that the White House lost valuable time because that office was disbanded. What do you make of that?"
President Trump: "Well, I just think it's a nasty question, because what we've done is, and Tony [Fauci] has said numerous times, that we've saved thousands of lives because of the quick closing. And when you say me, I didn't do it. We have a group of people. I could perhaps ask Tony about that, because I don't know anything about it. I mean, you say we did that. I don't know anything about it."
Reporter: "You don't know about the reorganization that happened at the National Security Council?"
Trump: "It's the administration, perhaps they do that, let people do, you used to be with a different newspaper than you are now, you know things like that happen."
Reporter: "But this is a reorganization at the National Security Council."
Trump: "Please go ahead. We're doing a great job. Let me tell you, these professionals behind me, these great, incredible doctors and businesses people, the best in the world, and I can say that, whether it's retailers or labs or anything you want to say, these are the best in the world. We're doing a great job. And we are 40 people right now, 40, compare that with other countries that have many, many times that amount, and one of the reasons we have 40 and others have, and again, that number is going up, just so you understand. And the number of cases, which are very small relatively speaking, it's going up. We've done a great job, because we acted quickly, we acted early, and there's nothing we could have done that was better than closing our borders to highly infected areas."

Top White House official in charge of pandemic response exits abruptly May 10, 2018 at 3:32 p.m. CDT
The top White House official responsible for leading the U.S. response in the event of a deadly pandemic has left the administration, and the global health security team he oversaw has been disbanded under a reorganization by national security adviser John Bolton.
The abrupt departure of Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer from the National Security Council means no senior administration official is now focused solely on global health security. Ziemerās departure, along with the breakup of his team, comes at a time when many experts say the country is already underprepared for the increasing risks of a pandemic or bioterrorism attack.
Ziemerās last day was Tuesday, the same day a new Ebola outbreak was declared in Congo. He is not being replaced.
Pandemic preparedness and global health security are issues that require government-wide responses, experts say, as well as the leadership of a high-ranking official within the White House who is assigned only this role.
āHealth security is very fragmented, with many different agencies,ā said J. Stephen Morrison, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. āIt means coordination and direction from the White House is terribly important. ā
The personnel changes, which Morrison and others characterize as a downgrading of global health security, are part of Boltonās previously announced plans to streamline the NSC. Two members of Ziemer's team have been merged into a unit in charge of weapons of mass destruction, and another official's position is now part of a unit responsible for international organizations. White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert, who had called for a comprehensive biodefense strategy against pandemics and biological attacks, is out completely. He left the day after Bolton took over last month.
NSC spokesman Robert Palladino said Wednesday the administration āremains committed to global health, global health security and biodefense, and will continue to address these issues with the same resolve under the new structure.ā
Another administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly, acknowledged it was only one of many administration priorities. āIn a world of limited resources, you have to pick and choose,ā he said. āWe lost a little bit of the leadership, but the expertise remains.ā
Ziemer is a well-respected public health leader who was considered highly effective leading the Presidentās Malaria Initiative under George W. Bush and Barack Obama before joining the NSC last year. While Palladino said he left āon the warmest terms,ā an individual familiar with the specifics behind the reorganization said āhe was basically pushed out. He struggled to preserve himself and the integrity of his team, and he failed.ā

Despite what he or his doctors say, he is vulnerable and in the at risk group. He is also in the middle of an election year which will add further stress to his already hectic schedule..The more hands he shakes, the greater the risks. Ditto for his professional and social events which expose him to a lot of people. For sure, he will get it at some point. The only question is will he live or die. From Washington Post: BREAKING: A second person who visited President Trumpās private Mar-a-Lago estate last weekend has tested positive for coronavirus, according to emails from Republican party officials to other guests who were present. So, he runs and he plans to use the publicity to start up a media empire. Only guess, what? He wins!
So, he has to take the job and he does and he ultimately can't handle it and now we have the coronavirus and T may not survive.

Coronavirus patients are conscious as they die, and beg to say goodbye to loved ones, according to a doctor on Italyās frontline.
Dr. Francesca Cortellaro, from the San Carlo Borromeo Hospital in Milan, described the haunting final moments of those on their death beds, as the European country battles the worst outbreak outside of China.
āYou know whatās most dramatic? Seeing patients dying alone, listening to them as they beg you to say goodbye to their children and grandchildren,ā Dr. Cortellaro told the Italian paper Il Giornale, according to Sky News.
āWhen they are about to die, they sense it,ā she added.
āThey are lucid, they do not go into narcolepsy. It is as if they were drowning, but with time to understand it.ā
Most of the more than 15,000 infected in Italy are elderly people ā and often their only way to say goodbye to their loved ones is via a video phone call.
āI pulled out the phone and called her on video,ā Cortellaro said of one dying grandmotherās request to see her granddaughter.
āThey said goodbye. Soon after she was gone.ā
With 15,113 confirmed cases as of Friday evening ā and more than 1,016 deaths ā Italy remains on lockdown, as the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Europe the new epicenter of the pandemic.
At another hospital in Milan, a new patient is admitted every five minutes, ABC News reported.
Dr. Massimo Galli, head of the infectious disease unit at Sacco Hospital, said the facility is reaching a point of ācomplete saturation.ā
The good news is virus-free patients are being discharged every two or three hours, Dr. Galli told the outlet, but there are still not enough beds to treat everyone and the virus isnāt expected to reach peak-spread for at least two weeks.

China shut this down only after the central government stepped in and quarantined millions of people. No one allowed to go in or out, all businesses, factories and schools shut down. Who is telling them to say this? Homeland Security? Because itās in no relation to reality, which is in two weeks everyoneās hair is going to be standing on end.

r491 - Forget Gupta. An American woman on a U.S. military base in Italy interviewed today on CNN. She had very practical advice and said to stock up on food and other essentials for up to 30 days. Shutting down interstate travel, except for trucks carrying supplies, limiting travel inside your own community, making all restaurants/clubs/theaters/schools/libraries etc. close down for a month or two so we can
A) slow down the spread so that our medical system isnāt overwhelmed, aka #FlattenTheCurve
B) stock up on PPE essentials for medical staff, build out additional facilities and learn from the first wave of infected
If we allow our medical system time to adapt to an unprecedented outbreak, we can keep the death rate under 1%.
If everyone gets sick at the same time, the number goes to 8-10% or more because of lack of hospital space, intensive medical care, and lifesaving drugs that are in short supply.
Shutting down everything except curbside delivery of pharmaceuticals and groceries is one of the only ways we are going to stop this from becoming a catastrophe.

Just basic math - it will be a disaster in NYC like Italy. There just arenāt enough respirators - so the ONLY way to prevent large number of deaths is stopping the spread. NYC should be more aggressive. TX is shutting down for Gods sake. NYC hospitals can not handle it - period. Everything needs to stop - screw the economy.
The hoarding is a Minor distraction. Toilet paper is irrelevant. And people are overreacting on food. Plenty of Frozen foods at stores - even if meat and veggies may be gone. Iām also confident that stores will be resupplied by next week.
THE ISSUE is respirators.

A VA staffer confirmed that the infected doctor treated patients earlier this week.

Habeas corpus, in simple terms, means people (citizens and noncitizens) can seek recourse to go before a judge [italic]while being held in detention in the US.[/italic]. Those who believe they have been unfairly detained can petition for a writ of habeas corpus. A successful petition means the those who are holding a suspect must bring the suspect before a judge to have the suspect's detainment adjudicated.

R564 but that isn't what he said. He was on a break, went back to work, and has been surprised by the ER patients he's gotten which he said are 70% "shortness of breath" and upper and lower respiratory symptoms. And he can't send them to other hospitals in the chain because there's no available beds. And getting them tested is apparently difficult (which we already knew). The two posts above were definitely the most alarmed ones but the point of view is what's important.
