Max von Sydow Has Died

Yes, he was very old but this saddens me all the same. He was a tremendous actor and screen presence.

I first became aware of him when he played the missionary in James Michener's "Hawaii" screen adaption.

Excellent actor. Beautiful voice. So good in everything he did.

The world’s loss.

Did the power of Christ compel him to die?

by Anonymousreply 4March 9, 2020 2:24 PM

I first saw him when I was a young kid watching "Conan The Barbarian." Small part in a schlocky film, but he elevated it.

I was amazed to find out that he was only 44 when he played Father Merrin in The Exorcist. Yes, the makeup made him look like an elderly man, but it was the way he embodied the character that made him so convincing in the role. Such a great actor.

No sympathy here.

I could never get over what he did to Sunny.

Loved him in Bergman's Hour of the Wolf.

I shook his hand at a banquet that a Swedish American society had for him in the early 90s. I remember he ordered the chocolate cake and thought, yeah, you're my kind of guy.

R10 I, for one, am glad there is an alternative to those annoyingly stupid and unclever "DEAD to me" threads. Thank you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 13March 9, 2020 5:03 PM

Max will NEVER be dead to me.

R10 For whatever reason I had the OP of the other Max thread blocked so didn't see the thread. I'll stay over here, danke.

He was also very sexy The two Emigrants movies he made with Liv Ullmann....wow.

by Anonymousreply 16March 9, 2020 7:29 PM

I agree, [R16]. He had a kind of masculinity that isn't around much anymore.

by Anonymousreply 17March 9, 2020 7:44 PM

He had a long career. Kept working when he was older. I though his best film was "Shame."
