Apple pie with cheddar cheese

Does anybody else like their slice of apple pie like this? Learned to eat it this way from my dad -- he said his favorite diner in NY would serve it this way.

When I tell people I like it this way, some people think it's so strange.

Nope - and I'm from Wisconsin, the cheese capital of the world! I like my apple pie warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

by Anonymousreply 1March 9, 2020 1:19 AM

Never had it that way!

by Anonymousreply 2March 9, 2020 1:23 AM

there’s an old saying, “a pie without cheese is like a hug without a squeeze.”

I think it’s a northeastern thing

by Anonymousreply 3March 9, 2020 1:25 AM

R1, a la mode is the most popular way out west here as well.

by Anonymousreply 4March 9, 2020 1:29 AM

I've heard about that, but never tried it. To be honest, I've never been a fan of apple pie. I've actually put it on my (non-existent) bucket list as something to try.

by Anonymousreply 5March 9, 2020 1:31 AM

It looks vile!

by Anonymousreply 6March 9, 2020 1:41 AM

I've had it with cheese lots of times. A good quality sharp cheddar is required. No mass produced cheapo cheese.

by Anonymousreply 7March 9, 2020 1:42 AM

Never had it like this but it does seem like a good combo.

by Anonymousreply 8March 9, 2020 1:44 AM

I liked a good sharp better baked into the crust. I think it's nauseating to put a slice on it, especially when it looks like the slice in OP's photo is Kraft American cheese (ewwwwww...).

by Anonymousreply 9March 9, 2020 1:46 AM

Honestly, the first time I ever saw it done was as a kid watching Golden Girls and Dorothy was putting cheese on the apple pie for the homeless people. And I thought "Is that Kraft Singles? Ewww." I've never known apple pie with anything but a scoop of vanilla.

What an odd combo.

by Anonymousreply 10March 9, 2020 1:46 AM

I love it that way. You shouldn't be using American style cheese though you want a nice farm style Cheddar. It also helps if the pie is not too sweet and uses nice tart or tangy apples, and is warmed just slightly.

by Anonymousreply 11March 9, 2020 1:47 AM

Raised on a farm in southern Saskatchewan it was always apple pie with cheddar.

Real cheddar,not Kraft plastic singles.

Ancestors were all Scots immigrating to Ontario starting 1780.

No refrigeration so it was cheese and not ice cream.

by Anonymousreply 12March 9, 2020 1:47 AM

I often eat apple slices with cheese for a snack. This doesn't seem much different.

by Anonymousreply 13March 9, 2020 1:47 AM

R1 and r4 are fraus who should be shot on sight.

Pie with ice cream? You needed to state this?

FUCK YOU!

by Anonymousreply 14March 9, 2020 1:48 AM

I sometimes make a cheddar cheese pie crust when making an apple pie. It's wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 15March 9, 2020 1:51 AM

I've never tried apple pie with cheddar cheese but I tend to like that savory/sweet combination.

by Anonymousreply 16March 9, 2020 1:53 AM

Many years ago Lord & Taylor had a counter-only restaurant on the tenth floor called The Soup Bar where they served apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese on top. Having been raised in California I had never seen such a thing. After one bite (well, maybe two just to be sure) I surreptitiously scraped the cheese off and ate the pie. Then, because I was so intimidated by the tough-gal waitress, I ate the slice of cheese by itself.

Heard of it, never had it, would like to try it.

by Anonymousreply 18March 9, 2020 1:54 AM

I love it. I never eat hot apple pie without a slice of cheddar on top.

by Anonymousreply 19March 9, 2020 1:55 AM

We find this quintessentially American and rather vulgar.

by Anonymousreply 20March 9, 2020 1:56 AM

The french don't consider cheddar cheese to be cheese.

by Anonymousreply 21March 9, 2020 1:59 AM

I don't have cheddar, would gorgonzola do?

by Anonymousreply 22March 9, 2020 2:00 AM

R21 They don't know everything and that fucking Brie shit is the most overrated cheese in the world.

by Anonymousreply 23March 9, 2020 2:04 AM

R22, I have never tried it with gorgonzola, although I've had gorgonzola with a pear tart before.

by Anonymousreply 24March 9, 2020 2:04 AM

[quote] The french don't consider cheddar cheese to be cheese.

Never heard about that. If it’s true, the French must be jealous. Cheddar cheese was started in England.

by Anonymousreply 25March 9, 2020 2:05 AM

We used a piquant Swiss cheese in our apple pies. It is delicious! I have had it with a sharp cheddar, but prefer the Swiss cheese in my apple pie.

by Anonymousreply 26March 9, 2020 2:05 AM

I’ve tried cheese on apple pie. Very delicious. It’s just fruit and cheese. I also put fruit jam or jelly on my grilled cheese sandwich.

by Anonymousreply 27March 9, 2020 2:06 AM

My dad would only eat apple pie with cheese and watermelon, rinds and all, with salt.

by Anonymousreply 28March 9, 2020 2:14 AM

Apple pie/w cheddar is a very high-end dessert.

by Anonymousreply 29March 9, 2020 2:17 AM

R6, try it! You might like it. I often add grated, cold cheddar into the pie crust and people wonder why it tastes so good.

by Anonymousreply 30March 9, 2020 2:39 AM

It's very much a New England thing. I grew up there, and my parents always put a slice of cheddar cheese on servings of apple pie.

by Anonymousreply 31March 9, 2020 2:44 AM

We like it with spray American cheese straight from the can.

Interesting article about the history of apple pie with cheddar cheese.

by Anonymousreply 33March 9, 2020 3:26 AM

Ew, and I say that as a Northeast person.

by Anonymousreply 34March 9, 2020 3:58 AM

R34, when I first saw my dad doing it, I thought the same thing...

by Anonymousreply 35March 9, 2020 4:44 AM

I love it! It compliments and cuts through the sweetness of the apples. My favorite snack is just cheddar and apples.

by Anonymousreply 36March 9, 2020 5:08 AM

R34 it's not a Northeastern thing or any region thing. It's a generational thing. Many family members from the South and West are it this way. I'm talking those born in the 1920s thru 1950s.

by Anonymousreply 37March 9, 2020 5:24 AM

This sounds like a quaint and peculiar Americanism.

by Anonymousreply 38March 9, 2020 5:26 AM

R38 yes, most definitely. By the by, my favorite tea time snack is a plate of apples, cheese and peanut butter. Sometimes, if I'm feeling naughty I will substitute chardonnay or rosé for the actual tea.

by Anonymousreply 39March 9, 2020 5:34 AM

Jesus Christ.

by Anonymousreply 40March 9, 2020 5:36 AM

[quote] It compliments and cuts through the sweetness of the apples.

"My, you are certainly are delicious today!"

by Anonymousreply 41March 9, 2020 5:37 AM

I'll have to give it a try,

by Anonymousreply 42March 9, 2020 12:47 PM

YES! And with a steaming cup of black coffee....my favorite farm breakfast. The cheddar better be white and sharp, like it should be. They only make it yellow for Yorkers.

by Anonymousreply 43March 9, 2020 12:51 PM

R43, I'll have to try it with sharp white cheddar. I've only ever had it with a slice of yellow.

by Anonymousreply 44March 9, 2020 1:33 PM

Or you could push the plate away and get on the treadmill, you fat whore/r44

by Anonymousreply 45March 9, 2020 1:36 PM

[quote]Does anybody else like their slice of apple pie like this? Learned to eat it this way from my dad

Does you have an extra chromosome like your dad?

by Anonymousreply 46March 9, 2020 1:42 PM

R45, lol. A slice of apple pie is only a once in awhile indulgence for me these days.

by Anonymousreply 47March 9, 2020 1:44 PM

My grandmother always served cheese with apple pie. But she put the slice of cheese next to the pie, not on top of it.

by Anonymousreply 48March 9, 2020 1:50 PM

I have never had it like this but have seen it on menus.

by Anonymousreply 49March 9, 2020 1:52 PM

It's a southern or maybe hillbilly thing. My dad liked cheese on his pie well enough but he preferred buttermilk poured over his apple pie. And he couldn't stand store bought cheddar, but grocery store cheese wasn't very good back when he was still around. He said homemade cheese from a farm tasted the best.

I never had it but in retrospect it sounds a lot like a cheese and fruit dessert plate, which I love.

by Anonymousreply 50March 9, 2020 1:57 PM

'Farm fresh' cheddar, people!! Yeah, my idiot stepmother used to put cheese on her pie. Dumb. And yes, I grew up in Wisconsin and love cheese.

by Anonymousreply 51March 9, 2020 2:01 PM

Some people with eat anything

by Anonymousreply 52March 9, 2020 2:08 PM

I've never understood why anyone would ruin a perfectly good piece of apple pie by putting fucking cheddar cheese on it.

If you're going to put anything on a slice of apple pie, it should be a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Period.

by Anonymousreply 53March 9, 2020 2:24 PM

I like whipped cream better than this "scoop of vanilla ice cream" y'all're so fond of.

by Anonymousreply 54March 9, 2020 2:25 PM

It has to be a New England or Northeast thing. As a kid I remember it in the dining cars on the (pre-Amtrak) trains to New York and in restaurants.

by Anonymousreply 55March 9, 2020 2:28 PM

Cheese and fruits is a great combination.

by Anonymousreply 56March 9, 2020 2:48 PM

This was the only way that my grandfather ate any fruit pie (blueberry, blackberry, strawberry, etc.) and he was very Southern (Georgia). I tried it as a kid and didn't care for it at all - but I wonder if I would think differently as an adult. The only issue now is that I hate fruit pies as a rule.

by Anonymousreply 57March 9, 2020 2:55 PM

[quote]I often add grated, cold cheddar into the pie crust and people wonder why it tastes so good.

This is the way.

by Anonymousreply 58March 9, 2020 2:57 PM

[quote]Some people with eat anything

Pretty much.

by Anonymousreply 59March 9, 2020 3:26 PM

Love it that way. With sharp, sharp cheddar.

by Anonymousreply 60March 9, 2020 3:30 PM

I can understand it. apple with cheddar is a thing I've been exposed to in the past. What most people don't understand about food, and deserts in particular salt is necessary. And the contrast between cheddar and apple pie is delicious.

by Anonymousreply 61March 9, 2020 3:40 PM

[quote]The only issue now is that I hate fruit pies as a rule.

Then I'm guessing that adding a slice of cheese is not going to make you like fruit pies any more.

by Anonymousreply 62March 9, 2020 4:11 PM

It seems like a natural fit if you're from a part of the country or world that has a lot of apple orchards and is a dairy state. New York fits that profile. We always had cheddar cheese with apple pie and it's as natural a combination as any fruit with any cheese and bread. Pear and brie on a cracker? Not much difference. I don't see it too much in my part of the world now, but I did love that flavor combination.

by Anonymousreply 63March 9, 2020 4:15 PM

[quote]What most people don't understand about food, and deserts in particular salt is necessary.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 64March 9, 2020 4:18 PM

r64, at least he didn't say "pudings."

by Anonymousreply 65March 9, 2020 4:19 PM

My favorite way to have each of my morning pies is with a block of Tillamook extra sharp cheddar!

by Anonymousreply 66March 9, 2020 5:01 PM

Nothing gross or odd about it. It was common in the fifties. Even Laura Petrie opted for cheese because Rob bought licorice ice cream by mistake.

by Anonymousreply 67March 9, 2020 5:08 PM

I also eat cheese and jam sandwiches but the OP's photo looks gross. I would try it if the cheese were baked into the crust.

by Anonymousreply 68March 9, 2020 5:37 PM

I would also try it if the cheese were grated and part of the crust. Who wants a dry, crumbly, mealy, slice of cheddar cheese on their pie? It ruins the whole effect of the moist apples and the flaky pastry.

by Anonymousreply 69March 9, 2020 7:46 PM

It's a THING in many cultures. I'm Scandinavian, grew up in a small northern town in the Midwest and it was served that way if we wanted it. Grandma used to put warm half and half over sliced apple pie too, besides a la mode.

I don't think it's strange. To go off topic, what I do find strange is saltine crackers dipped in coffee as a snack. We were started on coffee from the time we could eat, and it was a treat to sit down and dip the saltine crackers in our coffee. I gag thinking about it now, but my older relatives still do that.

by Anonymousreply 70March 9, 2020 8:24 PM

R70 Great Depression hangover snack. Saltines were cheap.

My mother loved sardines. Said they were a treat in the 1930's.

by Anonymousreply 71March 9, 2020 8:26 PM

R71

Yeah, my dad loved sardines too, and calf brains!

Ah, the good old days...

by Anonymousreply 72March 9, 2020 9:03 PM

I tried it once and it seems like a good fit for the current fad for sweetness and saltiness together. Ice cream wouldn't have been around much before the spread of modern refrigeration/freezer technology. My guess is that a restaurant must have started the practice of putting ice cream on pie because they would have had freezers before most ordinary homes did.

by Anonymousreply 73March 9, 2020 9:05 PM

F17 yes the notoriously hard and dangerous waitresses at Lord & Taylor's Soup Bar - they would cut a homo for not cleaning a plate. But the ex-con floozies at Charleston Garden were worse.

by Anonymousreply 74March 9, 2020 9:13 PM

I always thought this looked gross, until I tried with the some sharp Vermont or NY cheddar! Delish!

by Anonymousreply 75March 9, 2020 9:26 PM

Gross. I'm hung over and this did it for me.

by Anonymousreply 76March 9, 2020 10:07 PM

I like cheddar on apple pie every now and then. Delicious.

Frankly I like both cheddar and vanilla ice cream with my warm apple pie. The two go together well.

Just talking about it is making my mouth water.

by Anonymousreply 77March 9, 2020 11:22 PM

Cheddar cheese with chutney makes a good sandwich -- chutney is like a piquant apple pie.

by Anonymousreply 78March 10, 2020 12:54 AM

Lots of things from the 50s were gross and odd. They put fucking tunafish in lime jello for chrissakes.

If you put cheese on apple pie, you're ruining perfectly good apple pie.

by Anonymousreply 79March 10, 2020 3:21 AM

I enjoy ice cream with pie as much as the next person, but I love cheddar on apple pie. I REALLY like it grated into the crust mixture.

by Anonymousreply 80March 10, 2020 3:45 AM

[quote] If you put cheese on apple pie, you're ruining perfectly good apple pie.

But other people [italic]prefer[italic] it that way.

Why is that so hard for you to understand? Do you really think they've never had apple pie without cheese, and so they just don't know what they're missing?

by Anonymousreply 81March 10, 2020 6:45 AM

It doesn’t appeal. I’d prefer a fresh apple with cheese.

by Anonymousreply 82March 10, 2020 7:16 AM

[quote] Cheddar cheese with chutney makes a good sandwich -- chutney is like a piquant apple pie.

R78 , try crackers with cream cheese and chutney. Very nice as an emergency snack.

by Anonymousreply 83March 10, 2020 7:37 AM

I melt cheddar, dip in a slice of apple pie, roll it in corn flake then deep fry. Serve with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge.

by Anonymousreply 84March 10, 2020 11:08 AM

No wonder about 50% of the American people are obese! OMG!!!!

by Anonymousreply 85March 10, 2020 11:16 AM

R78, sounds interesting.

Are you a food vendor at state fairs?

by Anonymousreply 87March 10, 2020 3:27 PM

In Brazil they eat dulce de leche (doce de leite) with a slice of cheese.

Cheese is the gift that keeps on giving!

by Anonymousreply 90March 10, 2020 3:37 PM

Most people like cheesecake, so I wouldn't think cheese on a dessert would be that strange... nevertheless, apple pie + cheddar is a trend that never caught on in LA at least.

by Anonymousreply 91March 10, 2020 3:42 PM

r91, cream cheese is not the same as cheddar cheese.

by Anonymousreply 92March 10, 2020 4:14 PM

Do you cut the cheese when you eat apple pie, OP?

by Anonymousreply 93March 10, 2020 4:40 PM

No, R93, you do that AFTER you eat the apple pie.

by Anonymousreply 94March 10, 2020 7:34 PM

R92, cheddar cheese in a dessert is much better than cream cheese.

by Anonymousreply 95March 11, 2020 7:22 AM

Speaking of cheesecake, we got a Cheesecake Factory cheesecake for the holidays, and those things were 54% sugar, literally. You could hardly taste the cheese in them.

I prefer something like Junior's where you can taste the cheese and it's not overly sweet. That makes me think I'd probably like cheddar at least in the crust of an apple pie, something savory to cut the sweetness. I'm going to try it before it gets too hot to bake.

by Anonymousreply 96March 11, 2020 7:27 AM

[quote]Cheesecake Factory

First time I saw this was in Taxi Driver. Travis is eating with Cybill Shepard, has has apple pie with cheese on top. Totally insane. I asked my Mom about it and she said it was a NY thing, and 50's diner kinda thing. Never tried it, but I like good vanilla ice cream on top.

I've never heard of such a thing. I find it a bit odd, but I'm an openminded kind of girl. I'll try anything once.

by Anonymousreply 100March 11, 2020 1:51 PM

A lot of things from those older generations are gross, mostly the European shit like pickled eggs, Limburger cheese sandwiches, liverwurst, buttermilk, etc. They’re all fart and halitosis-inducing but back then people didn’t care, they needed the protein to work hard and survive.

or something.

by Anonymousreply 101March 11, 2020 3:14 PM

I grew up with this and didn’t know it was served any other way until I got older. Just like I didn’t know that Parmesan cheese was a real thing, and not a product that came from a green, shiny can.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 102March 11, 2020 4:40 PM

I was in high school when I found out Parmesan cheese didn't come in a green metallic cardboard can. My friend's sister's boyfriend was about to go to Vietnam, so we made him a going away dinner. I made the meatballs and my friend's sister introduced me to real Parmesan (though I don't think it was Parmigiano-Reggiano. That came later still). I got to grate some to put in my meatballs.

by Anonymousreply 103March 11, 2020 4:44 PM

I would happily and heartily enjoy that really beautiful slice of apple pie, but I would have to scrape off the cheese first.

I hope I'm not typing Ungrateful.

by Anonymousreply 104March 11, 2020 4:51 PM

R101, what is your issue with these foods? I love pickled eggs and make them regularly. Liverwurst is great, as is buttermilk (I use it more for cooking) . No GI problems or halitosis, either.

My family still enjoys apple pie with cheese, usually cheddar or Gouda. I'm another who prefers just the apples plus cheese.

by Anonymousreply 105March 11, 2020 4:56 PM

My dad was Danish and he was a fan of pickled herring and cooked red cabbage. Sometimes our house smelled pretty pungent.

by Anonymousreply 106March 11, 2020 5:01 PM

If I baked a homemade apple pie for a date, and he put fucking cheddar cheese on it, I would break up with him then and there.

by Anonymousreply 107March 12, 2020 3:24 AM

I'm sure your date would be devastated by that break-up, R107.

by Anonymousreply 108March 12, 2020 3:49 AM
