I'm r113 from the last thread, the guy from Victoria, BC with a possible case. They have put me on hold for testing, they were going to actually send a nurse out to do a swab, but apparently they are shifting resources to a new call centre in Vancouver that I am instructed to call tomorrow morning to arrange testing locally, not sure how that's going to work.
Definite sense that they are ramping up the response, anyway.
My symptoms haven't changed much, at least they have not gotten worse. Mild sore throat, dry cough, clear sinuses, headache, achy -- standard mild flu far, minus the lack of mucus. I'm not farting nearly as much (they confirmed it's considered an associated symptom, but not all that common). The nurse I spoke to on the phone agreed self-isolation is appropriate for me, I'm very lucky that I work from home anyway. For context I am 40, white, in good health otherwise. Former smoker, quit 5 years ago, still smoke pot occasionally. No known complicating health factors otherwise.
I will update as things develop.

Thanks for the update r10. I'm out east - Nova Scotia. Nothing reporting as yet. It's a little too quiet if you ask me. Typically, last night on the news, one of our major hospitals in Halifax was dealing with a major flood and had to shut down a wing. This is standard fare, happens at least once every few months. No idea how health authorities are going to cope with predicted influx of sick elderly, or any age group for that matter. One of the newscasters in Atlantic CTV (Maria Panopalis) said last Thursday evening something along the lines of "nothing to panic about, nothing serious, we're okay, ignore the media hype, all overblown." While all other news programs, were saying the opposite, including Canadians journalists out in BC.

It is, R21. EvergreenHealth, the hospital where many of the Seattle area COVID-19 patients were treated (and died), had on its website two days ago:
The CDC has determined that COVID-19 is now endemic in the Seattle area, meaning that the virus is now considered to be regularly found in our community.
That page has been pulled, but you can still find traces of it with a Google search.
Even without public health announcements, we only need to look at the established epidemiological patterns of countries and cities that are a week or two ahead of the US. Given the percentages of infected people who become symptomatic and, of those, the percentages who die, we know the virus has been circulating widely for weeks or months.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 8, 2020 9:43 PM |
On Friday night, ABC had an interview with a NYC ER doctor who advised they were turning away patients with mild symptoms, without testing them, and asking them to self isolate. They were only testing those with more serious symptoms. How many of those turned away rode the subway home? Stopped at the corner bodega? The thought boggles.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 8, 2020 9:47 PM |
Also, Italy reported its first case just two weeks ago, and now has 7,375 known cases. The US' first case is already almost eight weeks old. The principles of epidemiology don't care that the US thinks it's "the greatest country in the world!!".

When I worked in a nursing home in my college days, a large percentage of patients transferred from hospitals to our facility came to us with CDiff. We even had one with MRSA. The beauty of it all, the rarely ever informed the nursing home prior to dropping them off.
It actually was great money for a college kid, but it was the worst job I've had in my life. Chronically understaffed, overworked, and nurses who tried to blame us for their errors. The residents deserved so much better, but you can't properly give patients the time and care they deserve when you have 15-16 patients to care for in a shift. Looking back, I can't believe I did that job for almost five years.

A silver lining in all of this is that working from home and online schooling may become much more widespread as people realize it can be set up quickly, saves money on several levels, and affects almost nothing in the day to day operations of many workplaces. We've had the technology to make it widespread for at least a decade now but boomer-age employers have been reluctant to let go of their old ways, citing a loss of productivity and other widely disproven nonsense. Many workplaces will return to work in-house once things settle back down, but many won't.

To R65 and the other "it's just the flu" posters:
Yes, the flu kills tens of thousands per year, but that’s after having infected tens of millions. By contrast, COVID-19 has “only” killed about 3,800 people, but it’s also “only” infected just over 100,000. The flu's infection and mortality rates are somewhat predictable. COVID-19 is new and unpredictable (and without any treatment or vaccine). So it isn’t about the overall tally, it’s about what percentage of the infected actually die. Flu: [bold]0.01-0.02%[/bold]. COVID-19: [bold]2-3.5%[/bold]. It’s about mortality rates. And this isn't even addressing contagion and mutations (COVID-19 is at least twice as contagious and has mutated at least once, resulting in a far more virulent strain).
Think of it this way: You’re a newly hired salesbottom at a shop with one other salesbottom, who has worked at the shop for years. Over the course of any given year, your coworker averages selling [bold]2[/bold] caftans to each customer who enters the store. He’s done this for years and years, predictably. You, the new sales bottom, in just a few short months, manage to sell an average of [bold]20[/bold] caftans to each customer. Extrapolate these rates for one full year (you selling 20 caftans to each customer and your coworker selling 2 to each customer). Who will sell the most caftans?
by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 9, 2020 3:35 AM |
By contrast, COVID-19 has “only” killed about 3,800 people, but it’s also “only” infected just over 100,000.
We actually don't know how many people were infected, because it could have been spreading for months to people who thought it was just the flu and recovered. 80% of people worldwide have recovered—50,000 who were confirmed to have the virus, at last count.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | March 9, 2020 3:38 AM |
A simpler explanation is that based on sample size, Covid-19 is more deadly. Of known cases, 3-4 people out of 100 are dying. I also think it’s much more widespread than people are aware. They need to test in areas and then act accordingly. The Trump gang is wasting time.

Washington Post - People are trying to flee in advance of the lockdown in Italy
Confusion spreads as Italy tries to lock down16 million people
Italy on Sunday launched a complicated and urgent plan to restrict the movement of roughly 16 million people, a measure that unleashed confusion about how it could be enforced and whether it would be enough to slow the spread of the coronavirus....
The plan to lock down large swaths of the north was the first major attempt by a democracy during the coronavirus crisis to radically halt the routines of daily life — an effort that will have significant impacts on civil liberties.
But in the hours before and after the measure became law, people continued to stream out of the northern hubs of Milan and Venice on trains and planes for southern Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

As a global airline, we have strong relationships in place with health experts including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local health authorities worldwide. We are in constant contact with them to make sure our policies and procedures meet or exceed their guidelines.
Operations are our lifeblood. We’ve learned from past experience with outbreaks like H1N1 and Ebola, and have continually refined and improved our ability to protect our customers. That includes the way we circulate clean and fresh air in our aircraft with highly advanced HEPA filters, the new fogging procedures in our cleaning process, how we sanitize aircraft between flights and how we respond if a customer is displaying symptoms.
A full report on the measures Delta is taking to help you have a healthy flying experience is available here. It outlines our expanded cleaning and disinfecting at our airports and on board our aircraft; distribution of hand sanitizer and amenity kits to help customers stay clean; and the technology on our aircraft to filter and replace cabin air.
A command center in Atlanta has been stood up to guide our response, leading our global team of thousands of Delta professionals dedicated to this effort. That includes our reservations specialists handling thousands of incoming calls, our flight crews and Airport Customer Service (ACS) agents taking extra care of our customers, and our TechOps and operations coordination teams keeping the airline moving. This world-class group of airline employees has your back, and I have never been prouder of the women and men of Delta.
To ensure you always have access to the latest information and guidance, we have a website on the COVID-19 situation that is continually being updated with cleaning policies and actions we’re implementing to keep you safe, ways you can stay healthy while flying, and changes to our flight schedules and waiver information. Transparency is one of our core values, and we are committed to keeping you fully informed as the situation evolves.
While we’re committed to providing you with information you need to make informed decisions around your travel, we also understand the need for flexibility based on your individual circumstances. To make sure you can travel with confidence, we’re offering flexible waivers, and we’ve also adjusted our network in response to guidance from the State Department.
We understand that in today’s world, travel is fundamental to our business and our lives, which is why it can’t – and shouldn’t – simply stop. I believe Delta’s mission of connecting the world and creating opportunities is never more important than at times like this.
Thank you for your continued trust in Delta, and I look forward to seeing you in my own travels throughout the year.
A simpler explanation is that based on sample size, Covid-19 is more deadly. Of known cases, 3-4 people out of 100 are dying.
It also needs to be heavily emphasized that mostly old people are dying. Trump and those seniors who have positions of power need to make it known to their peers that they are most at risk and to not ignore the CDC's warning. I had to talk one of my friends who is 66 out of going on a cruise next week! Some older people are stubborn and think they always know what's best. We have never seen anything like this and a lot of seniors are going to die if they aren't careful.

CNN-Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz are under self-quarantine
Arizona Republican Rep. Paul Gosar and Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz announced Sunday that they are both self-quarantining after coming into contact with an individual at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), who later tested positive for the virus.
Gosar: The congressman said he was with the infected individual for "an extended period of time" and the two of them shook hands several times.
“I am not currently experiencing any symptoms, nor is any member of my staff. However, in order to prevent any potential transmission, I will remain at my home in Arizona until the conclusion of the 14 day period following my interaction with this individual,” Gosar said in a statement.
Gosar said he has been in contact with the House physician, and said that he is closing his Washington office this week “out of an abundance of caution.”
Cruz: The senator also said in a statement that his exposure to the individual had consisted of "a brief conversation and a handshake."
Cruz said he is “not experiencing any symptoms,” but that he will stay in Texas for 14 days “out of an abundance of caution.”
14 days is thought to be the incubation period for the virus -- that's how long it can take to get sick after being exposed to the virus.

Australia is so fucked.
80 cases to date. Most of them imported (from China, Iran, the US and a host of other countries and most of these are citizens who have returned home - very few foreign nationals by the way). They have actually traced back all but one case. They could limit the people coming into the country (i.e. ban tourists and force citizens returning home into quarantine for 2 weeks in Darwin or Christmas Island) but instead its all about $$$$$$$$.
The Governments (at federal and state levels) are telling people not to panic buy but at the same time telling the public the virus will take a strong hold here, that's its not a matter or if but when and lots of lives will be lost.
I really think they don't give a flying fuck about potential deaths. Their first thoughts appears to be all about $$$ and lets face it every Prime Minsters from John Howard to ScoMo have been happy to risk young Australian lives serving in useless wars so its no surprise that they are happy to let a virus that they could potentially keep out of the country for a number of months just fly on in and take out a whole bunch of people.
Just hope that in the event that civil unrest ensures that people remember to target all the past and present useless politicians from the last 25 years.

by Anonymous | reply 140 | March 9, 2020 7:15 AM |
First with China, and now with South Korea, it seems that the worst infection spread lasts about a month or so. Factories are reopening in China and both of these countries have seen the lowest number of new cases in the last couple of days. If the numbers were only coming out of China, I might question their accuracy but South Korea is on top of this shit.
The bad news is that we are on the upswing portion of the infection rates and Trump and Co. are completely fucking inept. However, a whole lot of America is populated at much lower densities than most of the high infection countries. The larger cities, which are also our transportation hubs, are where there will be problems. Old people should isolate themselves as much as possible for the next month or so. We'll be over the hump by then.
The hype is media bullshit. Everything is now a reality show for ratings. Flurries become Snowpocalypse, more than a drizzle means you need to build an ark, and Corona becomes the zombie plague come to kill us all! Wash your hands. You'll be fine.

Liz Specht (BS in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and PhD from the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of California San Diego) outlines how a 12-18mo is likely not realistic.
There's something big missing in the conversation re: how fast we could potentially develop and deploy a vaccine at large scale. This article does a great job stating realistic timeframes (12-18mo) while also discussing how novel approaches may alter that:
Noteworthy quote from that piece above: "A covid-19 vaccine developed, licensed, and manufactured at a global scale in twelve months would be an unprecedented, remarkable, even revolutionary achievement. No other vaccine has come close to being developed that quickly."
However, what's not being mentioned is that these timeframe estimates are based on historical development timelines, when the workforce has not been significantly impacted. Vaccines don't just develop themselves. They're developed and manufactured by humans.
We've already seen multiple workplaces - *including* biomedical research institutes - implement work-from-home policies for anyone other than "essential personnel" (which is often limited to key staff who maintain, for example, cell culture or vivarium facilities).
If widespread workplace shutdowns or restrictions even marginally impact the level of productivity of the remaining staff, this throws off our estimates for typical vaccine development timeframes.
Keep in mind also that individual researchers may have ill family members to care for, disrupted childcare routines due to partners' workplace shutdowns, & other disruptions in their lives that make 12-hour days in the lab unfeasible, even if that is their typical modus operandi.

"Great job being done by the @VP and the CoronaVirus Task Force. Thank you!" he said in one tweet.
"The BEST decision made was the toughest of them all - which saved many lives. Our VERY early decision to stop travel to and from certain parts of the world!" he said in another.

Some 20 inmates had managed to break out of Foggia prison in Puglia during a riot Monday morning, ANSA said citing local sources. Shop keepers in the area were told to close their shops in the vicinity of the prison.

Our government squandered the only chance we had at that. I’m not defending Trump’s response to this crisis (it’s been awful), but would anything have made a difference? China has supposedly drastically reduced transmission, but won’t cases spike again as things go back to “normal?”
A highly contagious virus with a 2 - 14++ day incubation period that produces no to little symptoms in a significant recent age of the infected is going to be impossible to stop, isn’t it? At least once tens of thousands are infected already.
I suspect the real plan is to try and somewhat control the pace of infections so that people aren’t dying in the street and some business and services remain operational while desperately trying to come up with a vaccine or cure.

For one thing, I think the White House interfered with the availability of tests. He also could direct the CDC to use the WHO test until their own test is ready to be distributed.

Here's where Trump fucked up. He didn't demand to work with the Chinese and insist they open up to our experts so we could work with them to contain this in December! Speed is of the essence for containment.
Secondly, he lied repeatedly because he wanted to "keep the numbers down" so the stock market would stabilize. But it didn't. Third and probably most important, they deliberately slowed the distribution of test kits, which would have helped us quantify and predict the spread.
Test kits are easy and cheap and they could have had them available faster and sooner. Fourth, the test kits analysis could have been handled differently. The fact is right now, Bill Gates funded program is producing test kits to make sure doctors have them readily available.
No attention was given to healthcare workers or hospitals, nursing homes etc. as to how they can protect themselves. In general, Trump has been living in his own private bubble where he has ignored the virus, ignored the spread, and obstructed the ability for experts including the CDC to get data and work on basic information.
How long is the incubation period? How easily is it spread? What is the contagion period? How long can the virus survive on surfaces? So far all they've given us is "Wash your hands" and "Avoid crowds."
Fuck Trump, Pence and all those corrupt, incompetent, vicious bastards. McConnell wouldn't even release legislation until a cap was removed on how much the pharmaceutical companies could charge for various virus related remedies, including vaccines once we get them, and pneumococcal vaccines. The Republicans are shit and Trump is the worst of them. He embodies everything that is despicable, immoral, and vile in this world.

We have absolutely no reason to believe cases won't spike again once people begin returning to work and their hometowns (remember, many millions traveled for the Lunar New Year and have yet to go back to their places of residence). Yet, the Pollyanas keep citing China's slowdown of new cases as evidence that the problem has been solved.

Dr. Bruce Aylward, who led the World Health Organization team that visited China, says "mild" cases of Covid-19 aren't all that mild, at least in China:
“Mild” was a positive test, fever, cough — maybe even pneumonia, but not needing oxygen. “Severe” was breathing rate up and oxygen saturation down, so needing oxygen or a ventilator. “Critical” was respiratory failure or multi-organ failure.
Also:
I’ve heard it said that “the mortality rate is not so bad because there are actually way more mild cases.” Sorry — the same number of people that were dying, still die. The real case fatality rate is probably what it is outside Hubei Province, somewhere between 1 and 2 percent.

I’m really getting tired of this comparison of Coronavirus deaths with flu deaths. It’s a stupid comparison, because the Corona virus is brand new. Father, sister of coronavirus patient violate self-quarantine to attend school event
The father and sister of a 20-year-old woman presumed to be the first person in Missouri to have the coronavirus disregarded a quarantine and went to a school function, according to reports.
The St. Louis County woman returned from Italy on March 2, arriving in Chicago and then taking an Amtrak train to St. Louis two days later after staying with a friend, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The woman, who had been studying abroad, called local health authorities when she started to feel ill, then stayed at home and did not have any contact with anyone before being instructed to be tested at a hospital, the news outlet reported.
Dr. Randall Williams, head of the state Department of Health and Senior Services, said he received a phone call about the positive test result at 1 p.m. Saturday, KMOV reported.
The woman’s family was notified about the diagnosis and told to quarantine between 6 and 6:30 p.m., when a father-daughter dance was scheduled to begin at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton, according to the station.
The event involved the Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School, independent Catholic schools in Frontenac.

I think that’s the only population where every infection was probably identified, and the fatality rate is already over 1%. The passengers are going to skew pretty old, but weren't the majority of those infected crew? I would think that cruise lines would try to screen for any obvious, significant pre-existing condition in crew because providing treatment while at sea could be problematic. Does anyone know it they do? Or what the crew/passenger breakdown was amount the infected?

Keep off cruises amid coronavirus outbreak, State Department says
The State Department on Sunday warned Americans to stay off cruises amid the coronavirus outbreak — after hundreds of Americans were sickened on at least two recent cruises last month.
“U.S. citizens, particularly travelers with underlying health conditions, should not travel by cruise ship,” the State Department said in a statement. “CDC notes that older adults and travelers with underlying health issues should avoid situations that put them at increased risk for more severe disease.”
There’s an increased risk of catching the potentially deadly disease on a cruise ship, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
To curb the spread of Covid-19, many countries have denied entry to ships and prevented passengers from disembarking. In some cases, passengers were allowed to get off ships, but were placed under strict quarantine procedures.
The US government last month evacuated about 300 passengers from a quarantined Diamond Princess cruise in Japan, but the State Department said that “repatriation flights should not be relied upon as an option for US citizens under the potential risk of quarantine by local authorities.”
Passengers on another coronavirus-hit Princess Cruises ship that was stuck off California’s northern coast for over a week finally docked in Oakland on Sunday. At least 21 sick passengers will be hospitalized there.

About a month ago I had asked my sister, a respiratory therapist who works at two hospitals in CT what she was hearing about this, the answer was that they were more worried about the flu at that point. Today she's getting a mask fitting, eye protection and will be getting the hospitals response protocols.
This feels redundant but hospitals in CT don't want patients coming to the ER. If you think that you're sick then arrangements with your healthcare provider to proceed. Dont just GO anywhere. If you're experiencing acute symptoms of course call 911. But depending on how/what regular EMTs may not be sent to you but rather paramedics.
So far this isnt hitting hospitals (for obvious reasons) but between the number of retirees, and breeders, it feels like a tinderbox ready to kick off.

I flew to Costa Rica from the US yesterday, and the flight was completely full. There was a group of 20-25 kids from Notre Dame going on spring break (on a side note, they were going on and on about how excited they were to golf...kids are weird these days). My hotel is also full. I flew in to have dental work done, at 1/4 of the cost in the US. I could tell that the dental hygienist wasn’t thrilled to have to even be in my proximity. Patient zero here was an American tourist. My partner is supposed to fly down to meet me next week, but I have a feeling that he won’t make it. It seems to be hitting the fan quickly.

ALL of Italy on lockdown
8m ago 20:44 - Guardian
All of Italy on lockdown – prime minister All of Italy will be placed under the lockdown conditions thus far imposed upon the so-called “red zone” in the north of the country, the Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte has said.
The restrictions will include banning all public gatherings and preventing all movement other than for work and emergencies. According to the Reuters news agency, he has said the decision was necessary to protect Italy’s most vulnerable citizens and that the right course of action now is for people to stay at home.

A large percentage of the population is going to get this virus. As we've seen, the vast majority will be fine in a 1-2 week period, but they need to start "upgrading" our medical infrastructure. Cancel elective surgeries, put out solid information on what to do if infected, etc.

The head of the CDC should make a speech to his employees saying that they are going to start using the WHO test until their test is ready, and make it widely available. Then note that he’ll probably be fired by the administration for that, but he’ll continue to come to work, continue in his current position, and continue to be their boss, he just won’t be paid for it. People simply need to start ignoring Trump entirely, including his direct reports.

I'm a smoker (I know, I know), but as a smoker, I sometimes just have a cough. It usually isn't bad, but it happens. If you start coughing in public you are going to get the look of death. I have a work trip tomorrow and haven't had a cigarette in the past 48 hours just for this reason. I do not want to be on a plane and have a coughing fit.

Quit, R340 . I quit smoking when I had bronchitis, with plans to resume when my bronchitis cleared up. I ended up quitting for a year. Marijuana smoking was a gateway back to tobacco and I relapsed for a year, with a vengeance. Then, I quit again and it stuck. Supposedly, it's very expensive, rare and acts like a vaccine.

It's interesting that Trump, a notorious germaphobe in the demographic most likely to be seriously affected by coronavirus, carries on as if he is immune. His extreme narcissism doesn't explain it. He's always been obsessed with his mortality, taking huge measures to protect it.
I've been speculating in my responses to other tweets, if you'd like to take a look there. I don't know anything definite but it's very disconcerting.
From [bold] Talking Points Memo[/bold]
There have been plenty of reports that President Trump is a bit of germaphobe (who also has a fear of being poisoned).
But you wouldn’t know it based on his interactions in Florida this morning, as he casually shook hands with supporters in a state that’s seen at least two deaths at the hands of the coronavirus.
Trump himself has attempted to minimize the severity of the outbreak, even as two of his top Republicans in Congress announced they would self-quarantine after word got out that they shook hands with someone at the Conservative Political Action Conference who later tested positive for the virus. Perhaps Trump’s handshakes in Florida were part of an effort to build up that minimizing narrative.

The average age of death in Italy from the virus is 81 years old.
85% of those who have died had other health complications like diabetes.
Why has Italy been hit so hard?
Italy is a top tourist country for China.
Northern Italy does a lot of business with China especially, in the fashion sector so there is a lot of travel between the two countries.
When greeting one another Italians lean in and kiss each other on both cheeks. This is done between even casual friends.
The Italian life-style is very social.
Italy is the most densely populated country in Europe.
Demographically Italy has the oldest aged population outside of Japan

Isn't the mortality rate for elderly / people with pre-existing conditions 25%?
One in four people will die from it. That's Contagion-level deadly.
The overall rate may be 3-4%, among everyone, but no one has antibodies to this, it has a longer incubation time than the flu (during which you are contagious) and lasts longer on surfaces than the flu.
It's definitely concerning.
I hope China's economy is severely damaged from this, because they gave it to the rest of the world.

The White House Press Cunt can't even be honest about something that is transparently due to coronavirus:
---
First lady Melania Trump has cancelled a California fundraiser she was to hold next week, the White House confirmed.
White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a text message that the first lady would not be holding a previously scheduled March 18 fundraiser in Beverly Hills. She said the decision was due to a “scheduling conflict.”
The move comes amid mounting concerns about the coronavirus. Los Angeles County, where the event was to be held, has declared a state of emergency over the outbreak.

Updates from Italy:
While many of Beijing’s white-collar workers returned to work as new infections subsided in China, some 16 million people under a widespread lockdown in northern Italy struggled to navigate the new rules of their mass isolation.
Inmates at more than two dozen Italian prisons rioted against restrictions on family visits and other containment measures, and six died after they broke into the infirmary and overdosed on anti-psychotic medicine.
Travelers at Milan’s main train station had to sign police forms self-certifying that they are traveling for “proven work needs,” situations of necessity, health reasons or to return home. They also needed to provide identity documents, contact numbers and an exact reason for travel.
Italy’s financial hub, Milan, and the popular tourist city of Venice were among the places under the quarantine lockdown. Across Italy, museums and archaeological sites were closed, weddings were canceled and restaurants were told to keep patrons a meter (more than 3 feet) apart. The country has counted 7,375 cases of COVID-19 virus and 366 deaths, more than any other country outside of Asia.
Pope Francis celebrated Mass by himself Monday at the Vatican hotel where he lives, live-streaming the event, but he did resume some meetings.

Newsflash for R439:
South Korea has tested more than 140,000 people for the new coronavirus and confirmed more than 6,000 cases. Its fatality rate is around 0.6%.
This suggests that, as many health experts have predicted, the virus' fatality rate seems to decrease as more cases are reported.
That's because more widespread testing leads more mild cases to be included in the count.

A New Jersey medical worker who was the Garden State’s first coronavirus patient says every day his health is “getting worse” — and warned others to take the bug more seriously, especially since he has none of the underlying conditions that officials have warned about.
James Cai, a 32-year-old physician’s assistant, said he thinks he caught the bug while attending a medical conference last weekend at a Times Square hotel, news station WCBS reported.
“It happened so quick,” Cai told the outlet. “The virus is everything. Diarrhea, watery eyes, shortness of breath, chest pain, you name it. High fever. … Every day is getting worse.”
Cai said he first visited an urgent-care clinic, then went to the emergency room at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he’s remained since Tuesday, according to the outlet.
“People have to take the coronavirus seriously. It’s very serious,” Cai told CBS.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that a New Jersey health care provider with Covid-19, matching Cai’s description, had visited a Westin hotel in Midtown and the King David Center nursing and rehab facility in Gravesend, Brooklyn, where the worker saw 11 patients. The worker was wearing a mask at the time, the mayor said.
King David confirmed to The Post on Monday that Cai was the worker.
Cai told WCBS he doesn’t agree with some health officials’ advice that face masks are unnecessary.
“A lot of people say, ‘It’s OK, don’t wear masks.’ I don’t believe that,” Cai said.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced Cai’s case Wednesday, saying, “We take this situation very seriously and have been preparing for this for weeks.”
There have since been five other cases reported in the Garden State as more than 550 people have become infected across the county, CNN reported.

The length of illness and potential for rapid decline are still major problems.
Although I’ve prepared for social isolation, it’s more a factor of protecting myself and my family from the first wave of infection. In a few months we should have some effective treatments.
There will be no vaccine. Researchers have been testing various coronavirus vaccines for decades and none of them have worked, and usually proved worse than the disease.
The disruptions to daily life for many people is going to be TOUGH! I think the most dangerous phase will come from claustrophobia induced anomie.
Numerous individuals with impeccable medical credentials have implored people to begin social distancing, practice frequent hand washing, avoid community gatherings, and NEVER touch your face!!!
Total lockdown of infected areas, and strategic lockdown of areas without infections, would stop transmission, at the cost of total breakdown of many things we take for granted.
What happens with Italy will be illuminating.

I'm still confused about this lockdown situation in Wuhan and Italy. Someone mentioned earlier her/his collegue hasn't left the apartment for 6 weeks now. We're talking about millions of people being locked in their apartments for weeks. Who feeds them? I can maybe survive 2 weeks if I have to stay in my apartment. Do these people on lockdown get weekly food deliveries from the government to their apartment doors? Are they allowed to go outside once a week to buy groceries? How does the government get food and supplies if millions of people are at home and not working? Do all governments have emergency food/supplies stored for millions of citizens? Italy is on lockdown now, which means no trucks picking up milk or other products and delivering them to production facilities. No deliveries from production facilities or other countries to supermarkets. When will they run out of groceries to feed 60 million people?
by Anonymous | reply 467 | March 10, 2020 10:26 AM |
After reading R467’s post, going to the store as I type.
In Wuhan, for a while they weren’t doing deliveries. There was a horrific video of a woman trying to climb from her lower balcony to a higher balcony to get rice from a neighbor. She fell and was killed.
Later, they were lowering buckets on a rope to haul up food, which was being delivered by some government employee.
Finally, they gave permission for one person per household to go to the store once a week. They were also extremely pro-active, and people were passing through a gauntlet of examinations to go.

The frightening thing about this virus is that huge numbers of people are getting it all at once. Whilst most people only have a minor symptoms because of the huge numbers the number of people contracting the disease at the same time the number who develop serious symptoms overwhelm health services and lots of people who would normally be able to survive with proper medical care won't receive that.
If the fucking disease didn't spread so fast and was staggered over three or four years people would have a chance but not under these circumstances.
Heard today that they think (still to be determined) that people won't be able to be reinfected, which is promising news (but on the other side of that they won't have any idea how long people that have been infected will remain immune from a second helping of the virus. Maybe for life but maybe only for a period of weeks, months or years - only time will tell.) The bracketed bit of this paragraph is me questioning long term immunity because we don't develop that for any other coronavirus' that I am aware of.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | March 10, 2020 12:28 PM |
R467 I don't think the lockdown in Italy is as extreme as the one in Wuhan and the province of Hubei. People will still be able to leave there houses but only for specific reasons and I think essential services and shopping for food would be included in that.
I won't be as effective but it will slow the virus down.
However, I doubt China has eradicated the virus and once they start trying to get 'back to normal' I suspect it will strike again.
Maybe the best solution is to isolate all people of a certain age (50 to 60 upwards) and those under that age with underlying medical conditions for 2 months say and simply let everyone else catch it. They will almost all have mild cases and that may stop the virus in its tracks because it will run out of hosts. After 2 months it should disappear and the more vulnerable can start venturing out - with great caution of course. Just an idea and probably a silly one that won't work but this has become an impossible situation that the world faces. And health issues and death aside the economic impact is going to be huge and long lasting.
The lack of testing means that it is almost impossible to know how many Americans are infected with the coronavirus and suffering from COVID-19, the disease it causes. While our analysis has tracked state and local announcements that more than 570 people in 36 states are infected, experts say that number is almost certainly too small to reflect the full extent of the disease’s spread in the U.S. Not enough Americans have been tested for officials to know how many people are ill, they say.

Italian doctor at heart of illness shares chilling coronavirus thoughts
Dr. Daniele Macchini, who works at the Humanitas Gavazzeni hospital in the northern city of Bergamo, warned in a lengthy post on Facebook about the dangers of complacency in the relentless war against the insidious virus.
“After much thought about whether and what to write about what is happening to us, I felt that silence was not responsible,” Macchini wrote in his post, as translated by Dr. Silvia Stringhini, an epidemiologist and researcher at the Geneva University’s Institute of Global Health.
“I will therefore try to convey to people far from our reality what we are living in Bergamo in these days of Covid-19 pandemic. I understand the need not to create panic, but when the message of the dangerousness of what is happening does not reach people I shudder,” he said.
“I myself watched with some amazement the reorganization of the entire hospital in the past week, when our current enemy was still in the shadows: the wards slowly ’emptied,’ elective activities were interrupted,” he continued in the chilling post, which was shared more than 29,000 times.
“All this rapid transformation brought an atmosphere of silence and surreal emptiness to the corridors of the hospital that we did not yet understand, waiting for a war that was yet to begin and that many (including me) were not so sure would ever come with such ferocity,” he said.
“I still remember my night call a week ago when I was waiting for the results of a swab. When I think about it, my anxiety over one possible case seems almost ridiculous and unjustified, now that I’ve seen what’s happening. Well, the situation now is dramatic to say the least,” Macchini added.
“The war has literally exploded and battles are uninterrupted day and night. But now that need for beds has arrived in all its drama. One after the other the departments that had been emptied fill up at an impressive pace.
“The boards with the names of the patients, of different colors depending on the operating unit, are now all red and instead of surgery you see the diagnosis, which is always the damned same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia.”
The doctor urged people not to describe COVID-19 as a bad case of the flu.
“Now, explain to me which flu virus causes such a rapid drama. … And while there are still people who boast of not being afraid by ignoring directions, protesting because their normal routine is ‘temporarily’ put in crisis, the epidemiological disaster is taking place,” he said.
“And there are no more surgeons, urologists, orthopedists, we are only doctors who suddenly become part of a single team to face this tsunami that has overwhelmed us.
“Cases are multiplying, we arrive at a rate of 15-20 admissions per day all for the same reason. The results of the swabs now come one after the other: positive, positive, positive. Suddenly the E.R. is collapsing.”
Describing every available ventilator as “gold,” Macchini said the doctors and nurses working at his side are exhausted.

CNN-Experts says "older adults" are at risk — but what does that mean?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says "older adults" and people with serious chronic medical conditions "are at higher risk of getting very sick from this illness."
Anyone over 60 and those with underlying health problems should try to avoid places with large crowds — such as movie theaters, busy malls and even religious services, top infectious disease experts say.
"This ought to be top of mind for people over 60, and those with underlying health problems," said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University professor and longtime CDC adviser.
"The single most important thing you can do to avoid the virus is reduce your face to face contact with people."
But why is age 60 often used as a threshold for those who need to be extra cautious?
"We now know more about who is at risk," US Surgeon General Jerome Adams said.
"(The) average age of death for people from coronavirus is 80. Average age of people who need medical attention is age 60."

If you're watching/ tracking statistics, this is becoming alarming with regard to how fast this is spreading.
If schools are not willing to shut down, at least have the good sense to instruct students returning from studying abroad to go directly home and not return until September.

There aren’t enough respirators, and that’s how they save people with complications. There aren’t enough hospital beds either. If people have stay home and treat themselves, like they did in Wuhan, because there aren’t enough beds, there will be high mortality rates like in Wuhan.
The whole point of quarantining isn’t to stop the virus entirely, it’s to slow it down enough so there’s enough equipment. If there’s too many sick people, it will spread like Wuhan.

“People you trust, people you probably voted for, have spent weeks minimizing what is clearly a very serious problem," Carlson said. "‘It’s just partisan politics,’ they say. ‘Calm down. In the end this was just like the flu and people die from that every year. Coronavirus will pass."
"They may not know any better," Carlson said. "Maybe they’re just not paying attention, or maybe they believe they’re serving some higher cause by shading reality. ... And there’s an election coming up. Best not to say anything that might help the other side. We get it. But they’re wrong" Carlson called it a "major event," stressing, "It’s definitely not just the flu.”

He would want the WH staff, the Secret Service, his family members and anyone else he sees on the regular to be tested.
His next strategy, BTW, he is going to take credit for every single measure every corporation and business is taking to deal with the virus. He claims he is insisting that insurance carriers waive co pays and costs associated with testing etc. of the virus. Which is BTW a provision of the Affordable Care Act. He had nothing to do with it. So Trump propaganda machine is alive and well, and taking credit for other people's initiatives. He's a piece of shit.

Chills are usually a sign of fever. Corona symptoms include Fever, chills, dry coughing, tiredness. I've also read that it comes in two stages, with you starting to feel better, but then it comes back. Most doctors are saying drink a lot of fluids, (I drink hot water with lemons to detox, and fresh ginger tea.) and take the kind of meds t hat treat your symptoms as you would with a regular cold or flu. So really, unless it goes into your lungs there's not much you can do even if you have it. IMO you need to move around a bit if you're able. Aerobic exercise. Not necessarily strenuous, but you need to improve your circulation. That may help you get warmer. So walk around the house and do some arm waving for about ten minutes. The other thing you ought to do is turn you heat register down to about 68-69. Then wrap up. Sweater, blankets, etc. Don't let your house get too warm and too dry because it will screw up your sinuses.

CNN-Ivy League cancels basketball tournaments ahead of March Madness
The Ivy League women’s and men’s conference tournaments scheduled to start this Saturday in Cambridge, Massachusetts, have been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, the league announced.
As a result, the league’s regular-season champions – Princeton’s women’s team (26-1) and Yale’s men’s team (23-7) – are automatic qualifiers to the NCAA tournaments.
The NCAA's March Madness tournament is just a week away.
“We understand and share the disappointment with student-athletes, coaches and fans who will not be able to participate in these tournaments,” Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris said. “Regrettably, the information and recommendations presented to us from public health authorities and medical professionals have convinced us that this is the most prudent decision.”
The league will implement “highly-restrictive, in-venue spectator limitations for all other upcoming campus athletics events. The League is also canceling all out-of-season practices and competitions,” effective immediately.
Postseason competition for winter sports will continue, the league said.

CDC urges elderly to stock up on food, stay home amid coronavirus fears
The advice is part of new recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aimed at the most vulnerable populations and stems partly from a new study of 70,000 Chinese patients with the virus.
“Have enough household items and groceries so that you will be prepared to stay home for a period of time,” Nancy Messonnier, a senior CDC official, said in a conference call Monday.
Messonnier said the findings from the study determined that about 15 to 20 percent of the Chinese patients studied developed serious illness.
Risk of serious illness increased for patients 60 and older and was the highest for people 80 and older.
Existing health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, also increase the risk.

CNN-The National Guard is deploying to this New York town to contain coronavirus
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled a plan to deal with the coronavirus outbreak in New Rochelle, including deploying the National Guard to a containment area and setting up a satellite testing facility for the community.
The National Guard will help deliver food to homes and clean public spaces in the containment area, Cuomo said.
New York is also setting up a satellite testing facility, partnering with Northwell Health, in New Rochelle, which is in Westchester County.
New Rochelle is “a particular problem,” Cuomo said, adding that “the numbers have been going up, the numbers continue to go up, the numbers are going up unabated.”
“What we are going to do is focus on an area -- concentric circle -- around the situs of the majority of the cases in New Rochelle," he said.
Cuomo described the cluster of confirmed coronavirus cases in New Rochelle as “probably the largest cluster in the United States,” adding it’s a “significant issue for us.” There are 108 confirmed coronavirus cases in Westchester County.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo described the “dramatic action,” detailing a two week period where facilities in the New Rochelle containment would be closed.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said starting March 12th facilities within that area, as well as schools within that area would be closed for two weeks. This will go on through March 25th.
“This will be a period of disruption for the community.”
Cuomo described it as a “matter of life and death.”

Chinese restaurant chain in California kicking out diners with fever amid coronavirus crisis
A chain of Chinese restaurants in California is so terrified of the novel coronavirus, it is checking customers’ temperatures before letting them inside — kicking out anyone with a fever.
Sichuan Impression uses an infrared thermometer to check for fevers with anyone trying to dine at its three locations in West Los Angeles, Tustin and Alhambra, it revealed on Instagram.
“If any abnormal symptom, such as fever, is identified, we will immediately assist to contact the nearest medical service,” the restaurant said.
“If you refuse to cooperate with the temperature measurement, we have to regretfully deny the service to you for the time being.”
In fact, the restaurants would prefer customers just stayed away.
“We encourage everyone to order ‘to-go’ for the time being, and will offer 5% off discount for the entire order,” the Instagram announcement said, with the Tustin location also offering free local delivery.
Sichuan Impression said the drastic measure was because having “a healthy and safe dinning environment” is its “top priority.”
“We have family in China, so we understand the importance of doing everything we can to protect both our customers and our workers,” co-owner Kelly Xiao told the Orange County Register. “Everybody has a responsibility to do what they can do.”
Some also worried that the testing could be a risk itself. “You are INFECTING every single person that you are touching with this thermometer,” @thereseember replied, calling them “VECTORS of AEROSOLIZED pathogens.”

The federal government, led by the president, is proclaiming nothing to see here and in the meantime, a town in New York is getting locked down. Hollywood story telling can't keep up with this shit.
the coronavirus outbreak in New Rochelle
This is all stemming from that one attorney, right? The one who went to the bat mitzvah and whose neighbor later drove him to the hospital?

Yes: New Rochelle is home to the midtown Manhattan lawyer who has been linked to dozens of cases across multiple states. He was the second confirmed case in New York and its first instance of community spread.
National Guard troops have been deployed to a Health Department command post and setting up a satellite testing facility and one-mile, two-week containment area in New Rochelle. As of Tuesday, Westchester County has seen 108 confirmed COVID-19 cases; that's 57 percent of all tri-state cases.

Ruh-roh. A Chinese guy who was hospitalized and released after testing clear died five days after getting out of the hospital. They're not sure if it came back/he was never really clear, or he was reinfected.

Smoking and obesity and the Coronavirus
From a CNN interview with Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert
We know from the Chinese data that being a male, older and having underlying health conditions are risk factors for increased serious illness and deaths.
For older men in China, smoking is still very common -- 60% of older males smoke. Smoking likely played a big role in the increased risk of this demographic dying from coronavirus. We see the same trend with influenza in our own country. Of note, only a small percentage of older women in China smoke, meaning they were much less at risk for serious disease.
We're concerned about the occurrence of other risk factors for severe disease as this virus moves out into other parts of the world. For example, one of the risk factors for acute respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS -- the most severe of the outcomes of COVID-19 infection -- is obesity. In parts of the world, including the US, where obesity is an epidemic problem, its likely we may see a different case fatality rate than we're seeing in China; that is, US fatalities may be less gender-specific and the rate of fatalities could be even higher than it is in China due to higher obesity rates among people 45 years or older.

I wonder if many of these people had advance medical directives which forbid the use of ventilators? so they just die?

If there is a silver lining to the outbreak of coronavirus in the US, maybe it will get people to quit smoking and lose weight.

The man who died in NJ ---He was admitted to Hackensack University Medical Center on March 6. He eventually suffered two cardiac arrests.
He had no travel outside of the United States but had traveled to New York, where there are more than 150 cases. He also had a history of diabetes.

Why the fuck hasn’t the St. Patrick’s Day Parade been cancelled yet? Cuomo said earlier that each area has different issues and should calibrate their decisions accordingly. Hasn’t he got the memo that thousands of people descend on the parade from areas that are experiencing higher levels of infection? Like New Rochelle?

I'm not particularly concerned about being seriously ill from the disease myself, but can't say how incredibly depressed I am by the dystopian atmosphere at present.
I blame the media, as well as public officials' need to be seen as "doing something".

it will be cancelled, Chicago already cancelled theirs. NYC mayor is being an asshole and he also said the virus only stayed on surfaces for 2 or 3 min which is totally WRONG. it stays for at least 2 or 3 days...up to 9 days, depending on weather and surface!

Fellow Americans, we are totally fucked! Less than 5000 tests by the CDC as of yesterday per their own admission. Based on the data, it would appear that one of the keys to avoiding deaths is early detection and swift preventative measures. Letting it go unchecked like this in the US is a time bomb waiting to happen. Once people start dying it's too late! Thank you Trump, Pence and the do nothing Repubs in congress. If Obama was President now they would be holding daily press conferences from the Whitehouse lawn

ON THE RUN Chinese coronavirus cops wear RoboCop-style helmets with AI cameras to spot patients
CHINESE policemen have been equipped with RoboCop-style helmets with AI cameras which can detect people who could have the coronavirus.
The artificial intelligence helmets were designed by technology firm Kuang-chi and have been used in several Chinese cities including Shanghai, Chengdu and Shenzhen.
They are fitted with a camera which can scan the body temperatures of anyone within a five-metre (16-foot) radius and alert the person wearing them in real-time to anyone with a fever.
Chengdu official Liu Tao, who uses the helmets in his work as an epidemic prevention and control officer, says a small alarm is triggered when somebody is scanned with a body temperature higher than 37.3 degrees Celsius.
The helmet has a speaker which allows it to ‘speak’, telling passersby: “Maximum body temperature is 36.4 degrees Celsius, please pass.”

A headline from the Daily Mail. Stay away from the UK too!!! Reported cases there are also way out of line with other European neighbors with similar populations. Ditto for Russia!
How many coronavirus cases are being missed? Suspected patients who contact NHS 111 are not being tested UNLESS they have been abroad - despite the killer infection rapidly spreading between humans in the UK
