Please donate to Pete Buttigieg for his stellar debate performance and keep him in the race
Please click the link and donate whatever you can. Pete is the only candidate to beat Bernie Sanders in this primary and has more delegates and votes than any other candidate besides Bernie. He is our gay and he needs at least 13 million before Super Tuesday to stay in the race. Please chip in what ever you can and let this historic candidacy continue creating history.
In both Iowa and New Hampshire, its Pete, not Sanders who brought out the most first time voters. In rural and conservative Iowa which is a swing vote, It's Pete who won all the counties while Bernie scored big in safe blue counties. If that is any indication its clear who can beat Trump and who cannot. SO PLEASE PLEASE DONATE

We need a president for the next 50 years, not the last 50. Pete is the only candidate who is not an outdated product of the past.
He is the only candidate who appeals to unity. The others are all mired in the same old gridlock and hate that gave us Donald Trump.
His ideas and policies are not only the most workable, his implementation plans are the only ones that include specific strategies to make them happen, instead of trying to ram them down the throats of legislators who will never go along with a Bernie or Warren or Biden initiative.
He is arguably the only one who can bring along a coalition of senators and House members to move Congress into a more cooperative era.

Pete probably won't get the nomination outright, but I think he'd be a perfect VP for Elizabeth Warren.
She's progressive enough to partially pacify the Sandernistas, without his pro-Castro baggage in Florida. She also knows the limits of what she could achieve without Congress & the Senate on board... but will still scold Wall Street as necessary.
Pete adds a touch of tasteful diversity, while still being reassuringly male & centrist. Being VP would be kind of like an internship for him.
Biden needs to retire. He's like Reagan during Reagan's second term... he'd never last two terms. I'm sure Liz & Pete will regularly have him over for dinner & will respect him as the elder statesmen he is... but Trump would *destroy* him mentally & physically.
The only people I know who are enthused about Bloomberg are journalists & pundits. I know of *nobody* who's "Burning for Bloomberg".

Elizabeth Warren is 4th in delegates, Pete is in second. Pete is also generally polling better than her. Why do you think she'll be top of the ticket again, R15?

This is a perfect example of why primaries should use Condorcet rules.
Under Condorcet rules, Bernie might be more people's first choice (but fewer than 50%), but almost nobody's second choice (due to his pro-Castro baggage that will utterly destroy him in Florida). Liz might be few people's first choice, but almost everyone's second or third choice.
Pete has lots of support, but has a serious "black ceiling" problem that's ultimately going to keep him from getting the nomination for president... but he's a genuinely nice, likeable guy who'll mostly be an asset as VP. And he's young enough to have plenty of time to be President after 8 years of being VP.
Bernie won't be allowed to win by the DNC. He'll cause Democrats in Florida to lose, and ultimately lose to Trump.
There's actually a lawsuit in progress to get Bernie removed from the ballot in Florida since he's technically not a registered Democrat... and Sunday's gaffe has suddenly made support for that lawsuit a mainstream Democratic cause here, as every elected Democrat in Miami scrambles to distance themselves from him for their own safety.

[quote] Bernie won't be allowed to win by the DNC.
No matter how often someone says this here, the DNC has no power to block Bernie from winning the nomination and no plans to try. I doubt the leadership there wants to see Bernie as the nominee, but he’ll get the same shot as everyone else and if he captures the most delegates, guess what? If anything, the DNC is bending over backward to support Bernie’s campaign, to avoid the bullshit that happened in2016.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 26, 2020 8:37 AM

It's not a question of the most delegates, but of having a majority of delegates. Sanders is unlikely to have those, which means a brokered convention. He'll have to hope that Liz Warren gets enough to put him over. She's gone light on Bernie and I think it's because she's angling for his VP spot.
However if he can't get Warren's delegates or enough of them, then the combination of Biden, Bloomberg, Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Steyer votes will got to a moderate candidate--probably Biden, but possibly someone else--including someone who isn't running.
Sanders would be toxic in the general election--not only would he lose, he'd take down other Democrats with him. He's bad news.

Iowa isn’t a swing state anymore.
The DNC basically has no choice but to nominate Sanders. His supporters would riot. On the other hand, I don’t believe Sanders will beat Trump.

Pete co-opted the Hope, Change, Vision-thang from Obama too late in the race. But he didn't have the testosterone to push it.
I'm getting so tired of all of them: Steyer's frantic head-bobbing; Bernie's flailing fingers; Warren's campy mock sincerity; Amy's trembly self-righteousness; Joe's sputtery search for words.
Bloomberg is a fresh new face but he needs to flatten Warren. Say he's done more in a year than she's done in her whole Town & Country life.

I live in Indiana and Indiana, the state that brought you Mike Pence, isn't going to elect any gay man to the Senate, anyway there isn't an open Senate seat to run for this year in Indiana, the soonest would be in 2022. While the South Bend congressional district use to elect Democrats, the Republican legislature gerrymandered enough Democrats out of the district that electing any Democrat in this district is next to impossible.
For Pete to have any chance of being in the Senate or House he would have to move to another state, and then he would be labeled a carpetbagger.

Pete has no path to the nomination, and his continued presence is splitting the 'moderate/centrist' vote allowing Bernie to squeak into 'wins' with a minority of votes.
The centrist/moderate candidates need to unite around one person to take out Bernie so that we can have any hope of winning in November.
Both Pete and Amy (whom I like) need to drop out and endorse Joe Biden (who isn't my first or even top three choice, but it's clear he's the consensus candidate that can win against Trump in the Electoral college).
Sadly, I think egos aren't going to let this happen, and the result will be 4 more years of Trump.

Pete's path upwards (besides president/vp) is blocked in Indiana... but I want him to stick around long enough to do really, really well in Florida... esp. south Florida.
He'd almost certainly be an instant shoo-in for the new mayor of Wilton Manors if he wanted it... and could quickly leverage that to mayor of Broward County (probably unopposed by Democrats, and no credible Republican opponent) if this fall's referendum to make it a strong elected office wins as expected. Mayor of a Brooklyn-like county in the 2.5th-largest state is a definite step up from South Bend, even if Wilton were just a temp job.
From there, he has a fairly easy path to beat Rick Scott for US Senate... and possibly 'persuade' Marco Rubio to forge a closer (ahem) working relationship (we'll know it's working if Marco suddenly loses 25 pounds & starts spending 2 hours/day at the gym).

In order to entice voters away from a decent status quo (economy) you have to promise them improvement: "The current leader said he'd do This, and he lied- he failed! I'll do it, I'll fix it, I can get it done... and here's how!".
But you can't scare them to death or make outrageous promises or bore them to sleep.

I don’t know but I truly see him as the leader this country needs at this incredibly dangerous moment. Not in 2024, not in 2028 - but right now. Fresh blood, deep intelligence, emotional discipline, executive and military experience.... I think it would do wonders to revitalize this country in the eyes of the world. The context was literally Bernie's oft expressed "soft spot" for socialist authoritarian regimes like Castro's Cuba, USSR, Nicaragua, etc. Pete's entire point was that democrats cannot risk running a candidate in the general election who even has the appearance of nostalgia for Cold War era socialist politics. Bernie will encourage people to vote who wouldn't normally vote just as Biden may encourage some "Never Trumpers." However, if you are truly a "Never Trumper" then you will vote for whoever is nominated.

What we're seeing is a growing irritation to the hangers-on who don't have a chance this year: Steyer, Buttigieg, Klobuchar and (yes) Warren. I'm sorry, please exit the stage and thanks for playing.
It's time to whittle it down and work with what we have. And that apparently is Biden, Sanders and Bloomberg. Good luck, guys.

Biden has underperformed in every state so far including Nevada. Black people alone will not win this election for him.
No chance for him.

R106 - just wait and see. Nothing matters until Super Tuesday. Pete will never be the nominee. Sanders, Biden or Bloomberg (unless someone new happens and FAST) are the possibilities. The others need to drop out.

Pete has the personality of a garden gnome. He is so boring that I can't even imagine him topping Chasten or getting flip fucked. Secret Service must be appalled.

Pete's political obituary will be written on March 3rd.

I heard on CNN that Pete thinks he can win more states AFTER Super Tuesday.
I think I heard something about Utah?

Utah is on Super Tuesday and there is no public polling information that would support that belief.

Pete is very smart, no doubt about that, but he is unqualified for the highest job in the land. If what we have now is unqualified, why change for another? He will be ready in about 12 years.

Calling someone unqualified and unready is just older people's code for trying to keep a monopoly on power.

R117, I am mainly talking politics here, and yes, the current consolidation of power by people in their late seventies, eighties, even threatening to go into their nineties (Hi Dianne Feinstein) is a problem, IMO.

Well, I do somewhat agree with you there R118. Thank you for the explanation.

R119, I do understand the valid concern about Pete's lack of experience. Still, he would be lite years better than Trump because I trust that he would choose an excellent cabinet and would surround himself with knowledgeable and informed people.
I could get behind the idea of him as a VP first to one of the other Dems too.

Not that it'll ever actually happen, but I wonder what Pete and Chasten's secret service codenames would be?
Dangermouse and Penfold? Bert and Ernie?| Pinky and the Brain?

I can get behind the idea of Biden/Harris 2020. They can hire Pete for a cabinet position. Or he could....hmmm? Run for Congress? That might help.

Pete and Chasten are the most boring couple I have seen in a while. We need recovery from trauma after Trump and these two would bring more trauma to millions which mean it is not the right time for a gay President and First Gent.

I'm actually pretty bummed out. I really would have loved to have seen buttigieg debate trump. it would be david and goliath but pete is a very hard-knuckles fighter as we saw with the last debates. that his message was for unity I sincerely appreciate, russian bots want chaos and discord.

This is shaping up to be very similar to 2016 (the leftist progressive Sanders vs. the moderate Hillary). Now we’ll have the leftist progressive Sanders vs. the moderate Biden. Sanders has a strong core of rabid Bernie Bro supporters and a somewhat larger group of others this go-around, but still a minority of Democrats. Bernie may get over the threshold with Democrats this time, but still would not gain enough trust in a general election to beat Trump (some poll results notwithstanding). More likely Biden will get the nomination, to the great consternation of Bernie Bro Brats who will again help spoil the victory of the Democratic candidate, along with Russian intervention and Republican dirty tricks. This could be a replay of 2016. It might depend on just how fed up voters are with the big blowhard in the White House. It’s bound to be a difficult, messy struggle this year.

If not an outright run as an independent as well.

It's horrible to say, but pray for Bernie to die (or otherwise become incapacitated), because it's the only way a Democrat (Liz) will beat Trump.
If Bernie loses the primary to Biden, he'll run as independent & get Trump re-elected by taking votes from Biden.
If Bernie wins the primary, every single Repubiican will turn out to "save America from socialism", and give Trump Republican supermajorities in the House & Senate to boot.
If Bernie can't run, his supporters can feel good about supporting Liz... and so can Democrats in general, especially if she runs with Joe as her VP.
For every Trump-hating Republican Bloombers gains, he'll lose 2 Democrats to indifference.
Biden can't win, because Bernie will shit on the Democrats & be a "Party Pooper" if Biden gets the nomination.
This is why Liz *must* stay in the race to the bitter end. Sanders being removed from the equation is her only path to victory... but it's also probably the only path to beating Trump for the DEMOCRATS.
