R1 is correct. Lots of us thought the news told the truth. Lots of us were unaware of spin and newscasters infusing their opinions into news story.

In the case of balloon boy, I was at my second job and my colleagues ran to a television in the middle of the day to watch the balloon. I was getting e-mails and texts asking me if I heard about the kid in the balloon.

48 hours later it was over and the whole family was being investigated. I think some airports ceased service and flights were redirected.
