Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch Off the market after failing to sell for 5 years
Michael Jackson's famed Neverland Ranch has been pulled off the market after almost five years and multiple price cuts, Compass confirmed to Business Insider.
Originally listed for $100 million in 2015 under a new identity as Sycamore Valley Ranch, the ranch was discounted to $67 million two years later, and then relisted again for $31 million in 2019.
Kyle Forsyth of Compass, one of the former listing agents for the ranch, told Business Insider that the agents representing the ranch found interested potential buyers, but no deal could be reached with the seller, Colony Capital.
The ranch was last on the market in 2019 for $31 million — a nearly 70% discount from its original asking price.
Jackson, who bought the property for $19.5 million in 1987, defaulted on a loan after financial hardships and entered Neverland into an ownership agreement with Colony Capital in 2008 for $23 million, according to ABC News.
Colony Capital, the private investment firm that manages the ranch, declined Business Insider's request for comment for this story.

It’s basically a small theme park, so the annual cost to maintain it must be obscene. Also, the cottage of blazing lights with flowery landscaping looks like something out of a Thomas Kinkade painting or Ari Aster film. Too creepy.

I don't think that the inability to sell has anything to do with MJ.
As others said here, it's the size of the property, the availability of water, the property taxes, and probably a host of other problems.
Never mind, the ridiculous asking price.
Not sure what they can do to make the place attractive, short of tearing down all of the structures on the property, and turning it into a farm.

R33, Michael Jackson was notorious for living far beyond his means. In his last years, he continually had business managers forced upon him due to indebtedness, and every one of them was fired or gave up when they would give him some ridiculously high annual allowance like $110 million -- far more money than it sounds like today -- and he would run through it too quickly and then have to come up with some scheme to keep his head above water.

Jeff Bezos should buy it, since he's wasting money on California properties at the moment.

R49, if anyone like that wanted it, they would wait until the house and other improvements are so far gone the price drops dramatically, and then they would buy it, raze everything, make it unrecognizable, move the entrance, change the address, and do everything possible to make everyone forget Michael Jackson was ever there.

I think the main issue (well, apart from maintenance) is location and the sordid reputation.
Who would pay for the privilege of owning a property with such an icky history of pedophilia? Spooky murder houses and such have a better chance of selling.
Commercial use is out of the question, because the property is in the middle of nowhere. And you can get cheaper sales elsewhere.
I think this particular property will only sell on a price based on the ground acre value. Not based on its sordid history or who owned it (Michael Jackson). Maybe some uber ambitioned New Age Guru will buy it and build a New Age resort and make a big deal about cleansing the area with some witch crafty New Age ritual.

I'm just pointing out this bit of OP's article:
"Kyle Forsyth of Compass, one of the former listing agents for the ranch, told Business Insider that the agents representing the ranch found interested potential buyers, but no deal could be reached with the seller, Colony Capital."
So there are potential buyers, but the mortgage lender gave MJ too much money on it and now they don't want to eat the inevitable loss.
I wonder how long it will take them to decide to let it go for market rate, because they ain't never getting that money back they gave Michael.

A contractor hired by a famously eccentric millionaire who asks to install a labyrinth of tunnels and secret passageways in his home doesn’t bat an eye. How would he know why he wanted them installed? Maybe it was for private access to his wine cellar for all he knew.
Let’s say he calls the cops:

R64, this is from OP's post: "Kyle Forsyth of Compass, one of the former listing agents for the ranch, told Business Insider that the agents representing the ranch found interested potential buyers, but no deal could be reached with the seller, Colony Capital."
Then: "Jackson, who bought the property for $19.5 million in 1987, defaulted on a loan after financial hardships and entered Neverland into an ownership agreement with Colony Capital in 2008 for $23 million, according to ABC News."
So it actually sounds like the owner group gave MJ more than it was worth, then with his death it became an albatross, and now they can't unload it for anything close to their investment. Their strategy was banking on MJ being alive, and because he loved the property so much, they thought he would buy it back or at least it would be enough of an attraction to his fans to earn their money back. Oops!

After everything is destroyed the only sensible thing to do is let the property go back to nature, like what happened at Jonestown in Guyana. [quote]only a tiny portion of the land is useable
...could you elaborate? "Usable" for what?
I'm also of the opinion that all the man-made structures should be razed to the ground and the land turned into a nature preserve.
Either that, or turned into a wildlife sanctuary for exotic animals rescued from the exotic pet trade or retired from the circus/entertainment industry.
At least that'll atone for the wrongdoings committed against the poor animals that were kept prisoner in this godforsaken place.

Btw, I was gonna add that if the land becomes a wildlife sanctuary or nature preserve, that's also an opportunity for it to be an education center—the kind of place where schools take children to on field trips.
But on second thought, I'm with the other poster(s) who said that this place should never have anything to with children again.

At the time of Michael's death, he was actually working on putting a business together. It was going to be Michael Jackson branded merchandise, that was going to be sold on a new MJ Merchandise ecommerce website.
It was going to be like what the Kardashians are doing now, with "DTC" "Direct To Consumer." That would've been really lucrative and could have potentially become a billion dollar company, just selling high quality produced MJ products. It worked for Kylie Jenner. And Kim is also making a huge killing with the "DTC" business model.
After he died, everything went to chaos and feel apart because his death was completely unexpected. I remember some of the ideas I heard at the time sounded really good, and I bet it would've been a huge success. It probably would've completely whipped out his $400 million dollar debt he was in. And put him back deep in the black again.
But his estate ended up making a tone of money anyway after he died. Michael didn't want to preform anymore. And if his business had been a success if it had launched, his days preforming would have been over. He was looking for business success to give him a way out of showbiz. I think he just wanted to live his life without having to worry about preforming or $$$. He just wanted to enjoy his life at that point. No more showbiz.

People forget how uncool Michael Jackson was in the 10 or so years before he died, or at least since he bleached baby Prince's hair so he would better resemble Macaulay Culkin and since he dangled Blanket out the window. His post-Thriller albums had that early-CD, tinny sound that SONY struggled with. The music scene in the 1990s was turning to electronic house music and indie rock and hip-hop. He was kind of a musical dinosaur, his eccentricities were increasingly alarming and his fans were batshit. The child molestation claims topped it off.
Of course when he died people felt so sorry for him and remembered that Off The Wall is one of the all-time great party albums.

"At the time of Michael's death, he was actually working on putting a business together. It was going to be Michael Jackson branded merchandise, that was going to be sold on a new MJ Merchandise ecommerce website. "
Was this to be part of the tour that Jackson was too sick to possibly complete? No, Jackson was considered desperately uncool at the time, with his plastic surgery and pedo allegations and frowsy wigs and the same fashions from his heyday and his sickly scrawny body that couldn't dance any more, and the drug addiction that wasn't secret, and which was about to kill him. The tour would have been a disaster, Jackson was too far gone to be able to perform, and I still think it's possible that the people behind the tour hired Conrad Murray to make sure they could collect the insurance instead of losing money on cancelled shows.
In those days, the MJ Fandom was reduced to a few nutters who never talked about the sickly Jackson of the 2000s, but the cool young Jackson of the seventies and eighties. (I know, because I tried trolling them, but they were just too sad.) There weren't any fortunes to be made out of those losers, and the mainstream was through with him at that point. Of course now the mainstream has rediscovered the music, which is why the Jackson Estate is still so desperate to keep the truth about him from coming out.

You all keep saying Michael was a has been at the time of his death. But keep leaving out the fact that he had 50 London concerts completely sold out at the London 02 arena. That's fucking huge. I believe that's the biggest venue they have in London, and for Michael Jackson to be able to sell it out was not a surprise to me. He's MICHAEL JACKSON for crying out loud, of course he was going to have a sold out residency.
And I bet he would've made a killing off of his merchandise too. They had a huge PR team in place who specialized in marketing and business data analytics research. They were looking to make big $$$ off of that merchandise. That was going to become his main source of income after the o2 residency. It was going to launch right before of during the tour.
You all are so quick to down MJ, but madonna is having a hard time keeping her concert schedules these days. That type of shit never happened with Michael. He was known for being professional on show nights. He knew the fans were the reason he existed. To. Ad madonna doesn't understand that.

He was still a big media personality but as a musical artist he was a joke. Of course people would want to go see him; he was a curiosity, a freak. Kind of reminds me of Judy Garland; people would go to her concerts in her later years just to see the train wreck, since her voice was pretty much shot.

So I’m intrigued now that MJ was probably never going to be able to fulfill his contract in London if his health was so precarious. Was that the plan all along to self destruct there? Obviously there were all kinds of insurance payoffs setup if he was to ill to preform, and then dying on top of that there had to be coverage for that as well. What was the payoff for him not being alive to perform and how much and who did it pay out to?

It doesn’t matter why, r179, the fact is he sold out 50 shows in pretty much record time. You can't just sell off land like that in smaller parcels without rezoning and approvals.
This area was hit hardest by the drought a few years back--that means there are going to be major issues with additional water rights. So, no water for a suburban subdevelopment that's near nothing, insufficient water for a vineyard.
So, maybe cattle ranching, but that's not that lucrative.

Amusement park rides. A zoo. A movie theater. A candy store. Toys and games. Neverland was a child's paradise, which it was meant to be. Pedophiles entice their victims that way, offering them things they like in order to gain their trust. When it came to his victim's parents Jackson enticed THEM, too. He gave them Cartier jewels, expensive trips, fine wines; they would, for a time, exist in a "fairytale", being the guest of Michael Jackson and meeting his famous friends (one victim's mother swooned over meeting Sean Connery). He would gain THEIR trust and they allowed him to take their little boys into his bedroom and into his bed. All this truly boggles the mind. But it happened. I think the parents of the kids Jackson molested were as bad as he was.

T174/130, there's no way Jackson's tour could have been anything but an all-around disaster. He was too sick and frail to perform well, or even to show up for half the performances. Any fans who actually got to see him stagger through his old moves would have left disappointed, and in no mood to buy merchandise.
Of course there would have been some sales, memorabilia from a performer's last tour usually rises in value after the performer dies, and some speculators would have gotten some things. Which reminds me, I simply MUST buy some Madonna 2020 tour crap...

Well, that's one of the reasons it's so difficult to get a conviction for pedophilia. Unless the perp is stupid enough to put a permanent record on film, the only witnesses are a child and someone who'll never admit the truth.
If anyone here thinks the "train station issue" exonerates Jackson, remember something from your childhood in detail... and then get an expensive lawyer to cross-examine you about it.

Maybe they’re saving it in case they want to use it for a reboot of [italic]Webster[/italic].

Would give a whole new meaning to Webster’s “men’s toes” lol

R226 or maybe they just have decent financial advisors who explained to them that buying that isolated, run-down moneypit would be a piss-poor investment.

As long as they bring back Chad Allen.

Seems like the perfect place to film a reality tv show. Maybe something creepy and dark.

I saw in the news today, Blanket just turned 18, and he just bought a $2M house in Calabasas. So I think everyone is buying there own homes.
Their all adults now.

You think Disney will ever remake [italic]Captain EO[/italic]? They'd never be able to find any modern artist who could equal just how big he was in his prime. The special about the opening was longer than the actual movie.

I saw photos the other day of blanket with his aunt Janet, they were on a private plane together headed to Europe.
Wonder what that's about.

They should use it for a reboot of Hansel and Gretel—two lost children happen upon an abandoned estate once owned by a pop star that preyed on children. But he is dead now..or is he????

Was MJ Diana Ross’s kid?
I think that’s what Love Child was about.

[quote]It was going to be like what the Kardashians are doing now, with "DTC" "Direct To Consumer." That would've been really lucrative and could have potentially become a billion dollar company, just selling high quality produced MJ products. It worked for Kylie Jenner.
You...think Kylie Jenner's products are "high quality"?

R242, MJ probably liked to fantasize about being Diana Ross's secret love child... or being anything but the son of those two monsters. Any kid from a horrible dysfunctional family does.
Maybe that's one reason hd started having plastic surgery, to look more like Diana and less like Joe.

Looks pretty. Love the trees near the house. And I can imagine the thrill of having all that land to roam- no brats running through your yard.

Don’t be mad because you were called out on your stupidity, r246.
Check yourself and move on is all you have to do.
