My ears!

It was a misguided attempt. Most people at the time saw it as a novelty, but didn't take it seriously. By the time that it came out, the younger generation knew Ethel as the loud woman on tv shows: The Lucy Show, That Girl, and from the yearly broadcast of "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."

Every night in Frisco At every kind of disco

My best friend bought it, and brought it everywhere with him the first few weeks he owned it. He thought it was amusingly camp but (sorry, AND) he loved it.

It was the final straw that broke the camel's back. Disco was dead soon after this came out.

I did buy it. I thought it was a scream.

Rock and rap deserved to die more, R6.

I think that was a discdont album.

It was camp, but not in a good way like the Village People were.

She was disco, when disco wasn't cool.

How coincidental. First learned about this earlier this week. Her voice is too broadway for disco but it's interesting that she gave it a try

I bought the album cause I love Merman. Still have it although I haven’t played it in years. Also not having a turntable means I’ll probably never get to play it again. In reality, it’s kind of sad she recorded it. She starts out rough and it gets somewhat better later on. I read that she did it in one take and it shows. Too bad that some of these greats didn’t know when to quit.

Honestly, this is less embarrassing than William Shatner covering Bob Dylan.

I bought a copy in almost mint condition in a Thrift Store. Ethel did all of her old standards disco style. Very entertaining! And I played it a lot.

I LOVE her caftan and Want one just like it !

One real problem with it was that many of Ethel's best hits had a kind of syncopated rhythm to them and the disco arrangements were dependent on absolutely regular, consistent 2/4 rhythms. Her vocal quality was less of a problem. It would be like Ella singing Sigmund Romberg.

Guys got AIDS for this?

I was convinced Merman would have done a punk album had she lived longer.
A friend of mine used to sing Clash songs while imitating Merman.
Oh, what could have been!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 23, 2020 3:26 AM |
She would have been great covering Guns N' Roses or the Scorpions.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 23, 2020 3:42 AM |
I never got around to buying a copy.
