Try these, OP (Mrs. Freshley's chocolate cupcakes). I first ate them circa 2012 to 2016, those dark years that Hostess went out of business and I was deprived of their cupcakes. Anyway, fast forward to today: I now prefer Mrs. Freshley's to Hostess.

by Anonymousreply 44February 21, 2020 9:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 45February 21, 2020 9:15 PM

I grew up in California in the '60s and always heard about Drake's Cakes and Tastykake, neither of which were sold here. So when I moved to the east coast in the late '70s, I couldn't wait to try them. They were not exactly a revelation. Entenmann's was also new to me (again, not in CA in those days) and I did like some of their Danishes.

I'm still partial to good old Hostess chocolate creme-filled cupcakes ... split in half, and served with vanilla ice cream.

Ok, I was a fat white a year ago but now m back to my fighting weight. However, when I want to gorge just like Meredith Baxter-Birney in that 80s tv movie about a bulimic mom, I love those Lil' Deb Fudge Rounds. They taste fake and are delicious! From childhood my favorite were Mrs Bairds French Pastry. Oh god, they were good as a young gay. A cake with cream inside and dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with nuts. ¡Si, fat putas rejoice!

by Anonymousreply 93February 22, 2020 4:32 AM

Lol at “fat white”...autocorrect

by Anonymousreply 94February 22, 2020 5:21 AM

I've tried nearly all the Little Debbie and Tastycake products mentioned and none of them hold any appeal for me now. Inexpensive doesn't have to mean low quality, which is what they all are. The cakes are too dry due to the oils used. In America, I know coconut oil was used in many of these types of snacks prior to the misguided crusade against saturated fat. Coconut oil (not palm) contributed greatly to flavor and shelf-life.

by Anonymousreply 107February 22, 2020 7:54 PM

It’s astounding how Entenmann’s products have shrunk and declined since I was a kid 30 years ago. The cakes are paper thin now! The donuts are half the size they used to be and all their products are so full of chemicals it’s terrible to even look at the ingredients in their products. That being said, I’m not above eating them when they’re BOGO in the supermarket.

by Anonymousreply 108February 22, 2020 9:22 PM

Not that unusual, especially in the old days. Crisco, vanilla extract and powdered sugar was how my mother made white frosting in the '50s, until she switched to butter to make "buttercream frosting." The frosting recipe used to be printed on Crisco labels.
