If he lived what career would he have had? What would he be doing today?
He'd be 64 yr. Same age as Donny Osmond. Doing the same things.

He made poor choices. His career would be dead.

by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 20, 2020 2:54 PM |
Either he would've killed himself once he lost his looks through aging or become a hot plastic surgery mess to hold on to his former beauty. I mean, that's all people praise him for: His physical appeal. You think that guy would have been able (or allowed) to do something that doesn't rely on him being pretty?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 20, 2020 2:54 PM |
Aging poorly, but that would have been better than how he ended up.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 20, 2020 2:56 PM |

He was perfect. Perfect chest hair, height, face. Total physical package.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 20, 2020 3:39 PM |
He was good looking but he was not a good actor. He'd probably be on his sixth crappy tv show, now playing the older detective to a young woman, being charming and all, but not much else. And he'd be hawking stuff on commercials. By this time, maybe Depends.

I don't get where people are saying he was a bad actor; his credits include The Making of a Male Model and Cover Up; not exactly the vehicles to prove what he could do.
I thought was fine in Voyagers! given the adage of never working with kids. Meeno was a seasoned pro when Voyagers! came along. I thought JEH was great. The Pilot, Agents of Satan, Cleo & the Babe; and Barriers of Sound were all episodes in which he was especially good.
What would he be doing today? Had he not segued into films (which he was already working on -- The Bear) he'd be playing hot dad types on CW shows.
There are some FB pages/groups devoted to him, I belong to one. I happened to call a company that has a switchboard in his hometown; I got an operator on the phone to get some info and the lady who answered was nice. I said oh, there's a famous actor from Tenafly NJ; she reads off a couple. I said no, this was one who died young; he'd have had a nice career; she said oh, Jack Hexum? I went to high school with him. She says he wasn't gay but who doesn't hide that shit in h.s. -- especially if you're masculine.
I moved to LA a few years after he died and ended up working in TV -- I likely would have crossed paths with him had he lived. A shame, really.
Everyone I've ever met in LA who knew him or worked with him has not a bad word to say about him; in fact, they only have nice things to say. I know plenty of people who worked with dead people and if they'd worked with an asshole people would say it.
What a loss. What a waste.

R123, you might not be wrong.
Supposedly, Hexum was being bandied about for a remake of Terry and the Pirates; an updated version was never done, but who knows? Maybe with Hexum it would have been.
Pretty sure he turned down the Dex Dexter role on Dynasty b/c he didn't want to sign up for a seven year deal (which would have taken him into his early 30s).
he wanted to make smarter choices; yes, yes, we ALL know about the dumb mistake he made on the set while waiting for the set to be re-lit.
If ONLY someone had told him about the danger of blanks.
IF ONLY the prop guy had taken the gun from him.
IF ONLY the lighting guy lit the set more quickly.
IF ONLY the writer of that episode wrote the show a little differently.
Sigh.

He knew the danger of blanks. His roomate recalled that Hexum loved guns and told him how powerful guns loaded with blanks (cotton wadding) could be.

Hexum was exhausted he had been on set since 4am. By 5pm he was anxious and impatient to get a flight to Vegas where he was rehearsing for a trapeze act for Circus of the Stars. They were taking a long time to re light the set for the last shots. Hexum dozed off on the set bed. When he woke they still weren't ready. He picked up the prop .38 on the nite stand and said something like " if they don't get this going I'm gonna shoot myself" Pressed the pistol to contact his temple and BLAM! If the revolver was held just a few inches away from his temple he might have just had a slight concussion but by pressing it up to the side of his head it drove a quarter size piece of skull bone thru his brain . The bone acted as a bullet.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | February 21, 2020 7:24 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 128 | February 21, 2020 7:29 AM |
A strange discrepancy is that the revolver used in the fatal scene ( see screen shot) was .38 That is the caliber bullet Hexum is seen loading into the pistol. However the autopsy reported the gun was a .45 magnum a far larger revolver. If the gun photographed in the scene was a .38 how did a .45 magnum get on the nite stand ? The prop master had a lot to answer for. Have never read his testimony from the inquest.

Bad day for the actors and crew:
The gun discharged the blank wad of paper which shattered his skull, forcing a bone fragment the size of a quarter into the centre of his brain.
Jon Erik screamed in shock. Blood gushed over the teal sheets as he convulsed on the bed.A fellow actor reached into Jon Erik’s mouth to keep him from choking on his tongue. Not waiting for an ambulance the crew wrapped his head in towels and lifted his limp 6’ 2" 180 lbs body into the back of a truck. After losing several pints of blood on the short run to the hospital, the actor underwent five hours of surgery and was placed on life-support machines.
Tragically his own skull fragment acting with the force of a bullet had reduced his brain to pulp.
Six days later, Hexum was declared brain dead. His magnificent body was kept “alive” by machines until his organs were harvested with permission of his devastated family. What remained of the most gorgeous man in Hollywood was cremated. Jon-Erik’s ashes were scattered at sea off his favorite beach in Malibu.

Damn, Jon-Eril Hexum became gorgeous, however it happened--naturally or plastic surgery. He was quite the sensation in his day. It was so early in his career, but there sure was much attention swirling around him. He was stunning.
And his co-star on "Cover Up," the nine-time married to eight men, Jennifer O'Neill, was beautiful too. She just turned 72 yesterday. She was the older woman in the landmark, coming-of-age film, "Summer of '42."

Cover Up
Hexum appeared in only seven episodes of the series, including the pilot. He was replaced by Antony Hamilton for the remainder of the season. Jennifer O'Neill appeared in all of the episodes. As Cover Up continued to air throughout the winter of 1984–85, ratings held up. The network ultimately canceled the series after its first season due to mediocre ratings.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | February 21, 2020 8:11 AM |
Antony Hamilton "Tony" Smith appeared in 14 episodes of Cover Up, 1984-85. By the late '80s, he was credited in his work as 'Tony Hamilton.'
Born in Liverpool, England: After the cancellation of Cover Up, Hamilton was in talks to replace Roger Moore as the new James Bond in the 007 film series. Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli was reportedly hesitant to cast Hamilton as the womanising James Bond because, in real life, Hamilton was gay. Timothy Dalton was ultimately cast as James Bond.

He was only 26 when he died; His birthday was less than a month away.
I'm a sucker for those big brother types so his role as Phineas, Jeffrey's protector, big brother, father, even on Voyagers! hooked me hard and fast. I was happy when the show came out on DVD.
He may not have been (or may have been) gay. Who knows?

R136 A nose job plus capped teeth, and lighter blue eye contacts. A great job by the surgeon he made a work of art.

At r156:
More beautiful in the After photo.
Sexier in the Before shot.
I never got the obsession with him. He seemed like a charisma-lite model. Stunning but sexless.
His contemporary Ken Wahl, on the other hand, dripped sex for me. (He’s starring in his own DL thread right now!)
And the WHET story and image are not appealing. Maybe JEHex would have won me over in his middle age.

by Anonymous | reply 168 | February 22, 2020 3:36 AM |
R150 Hardly. If you bothered to watch Hexum interviewed you would see he was quite articulate and very self aware. He had a great self deprecating sense of humor about his "hunk" image. He had already started his own production company. He was a fine singer and pianist. He lettered in diving. His specialty being the 30 meter high board. He majored in biochemical engineering at MSU. Hexum was no himbo.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | February 22, 2020 3:39 AM |
We don't know what he would have done. At first, I didn't think he had any plastic surgery; at times, I think he just had a great Hollywood makeover.
Sometimes when I watch an old movie on TV I'll call up imdb.com on my laptop and am amazed at how often some people in the film have continued to work and how others are one hit wonders.
With JEH's look, voice, appeal, and manners (he comes off as super-polite in his interviews), I think he would have done okay.
He signed up for Cover Up which I'm guessing could have done on for seven years (not likely, but they sign up for that long) so I'm not sure why he didn't sign up for Dynasty instead; I guess more money as the lead.

If the gun hadn't gotten him in 1984, I feel he would have been added to the list of handsome male celebrities who mysteriously wasted away due to pancreatic cancer or pneumonia in the next decade.
He was such a beauty, wish he was still with us.

p.s. his movie "the making of a male model" is now on on amazon on dvd for purchase...
the color on this dvd from this 1984 movie is really incredible.. very detailed and vibrant and it makes him look even MORE stunning if possible! He is truly the perfect example of being so beautiful "it hurts your eyes to look at him"!.

R182 Jennifer is also a religious right Christian (700 Club member etc.) who is still "pro-life" & "pro-gun" to this very day.
She also goes to the media every couple years to say how conservatives can't get jobs in the entertainment industry.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | February 22, 2020 8:22 PM |
R196 Jennifer was pretty but had barely adequate acting skills and very little charisma. She did Christmas commercials for our local Detroit area and it was commented on how blah and boring she and they were. Not much talent there. A number of years ago she wrote a memoir that had not one single photo in it - WTF?! She wrote about being anti-abortion and she also discussed "Cover Up" - she stated that when Anthony Hamilton took over the male lead role the crew members laughed behind his back because he was gay. Nasty!!

I enjoyed Voyagers but I had forgotten what a pederasty fantasy it was. Geez, were all the writers the founding members of NAMBLA? Watch this compilation and notice how often the characters make eyes at each other, fight, and then hug. Also notice that it's rare that JEH isn't showing off his muscles or at least his cleavage in some way.

Henry Cavill is today's version of Jon-Erik Hexum. Cute, but dumb and with no talent. At least Henry hasn't killed himself through stupidity....yet.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | February 23, 2020 1:47 AM |
Here's what Joan told People in 1983 when headlines linked her to Hexum romantically. Her quote is about that hot poster where a shirtless Hexum has his hands up in the air, holding a tree limb or something and you see his pits and pecs.
“I don’t like it very much,” sniffs co-star Collins. “To be honest, I’m not an armpit person.”
Why do the 'are we/aren't we dating?' thing UNLESS he's gay?
The thing is the guy was only 26 when he died, probably only 25 when he worked with Collins. that's still pretty young.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | February 23, 2020 2:33 AM |
The People article also speculates that Hexum was director Hal Needham's choice for Terry and the Pirates on the big screen.
The film was never made.

There was a really dumb game show hosted by Betty White that I think was a summer runner. The participants were all male (I think mostly from NBC shows) stars noted for their looks/bodies. The format of the show involved Betty flirting with the guys and asking them questions for points. Hexum was on the show and he had a very deep voice and the rest of the guys made fun of him when he spoke I remember one actor from CHiPs made a locker room gay joke about Hexum during the taping. The actor was Tom Reilly or Tom O'Reilly who later lost his job from CHiPs after he was stopped by cops for driving under the influence of alcohol and Quaaludes.

Merv was shameless about promoting his boi toys. Does anyone remember the name of the Italian guido lunkhead.? He had a bit part in the Godfather. Maybe 30 seconds of screen time. Merv had him on a least a dozen times. Even my mother knew Merv was enamored.

I can't believe I missed this thread till now. My 2 cents... Jon-Erik was quoted in an article saying he broke his nose "several times" after playing football at Michigan State. Perhaps that's the justification for the nose job? The eyes were real. His parents were Norwegian and his father born in Iceland. Colored contacts weren't a thing until the early 90's. I had them in 1996 and they looked super fake. I believe Ted Mcginley took his career.

He was frugal when alive so would assume he would not have had to still work guest starring on tv shows when he got older. He was more into being a movie star than actually being an actor and making enuf moola might have been enuf in the end. I am not so sure about the straight part...........he almost always attended industry events alone. He was best friends with Tony Danza so it wouldnt surprise me that it was more than that with Danza. He was breaking out to be a major star in 1982, he wasnt exactly going to come out............ if he was gay.
