Brendan Fraser: Hot or Nyet?
Inspired by the currently active Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Val Kilmber discussions, do you think Brendan Fraser was ever truly beautiful?
He hasn’t ripened well, but I think he was so, so gorgeous when he was young; however, a female friend of mine insists that he has always been repulsive looking, regardless of the body.
What sayes’t thou, DL?

I was actively typing in the poll options on my phone when DL automatically reloaded and submitted this thread. Why is this site so goddamned glitchy?

He was gorgeous. Best example: George of the Jungle. Yum.

I never paid him that much attention aside from the eye candy until I watched Gods and Monsters for a class in college and then he won my heart.
I don’t know when he turned into that alt-right frog cartoon, but I’m not mad at him for getting old. It happened to Marlon Brando, too, and there is no command that I would not obey from young Marlon.

He was so fuckable when he was younger and still seems like a nice guy, when he could have turned into a bitter asshole.

I'm still somewhat shocked that a Disney movie had such a hunk leading their film. I guess it's no different than their current stable of Marvel beef, but Brendan was basically shirtless throughout the whole film, tingling the nether regions of this young Disney gay. Brendan was an essential part of my, and others', sexual awakening, and WE OWE DADDY FRASER FOR THAT!
He was also hot clothed.

He was a stop on the bus but the closet turned him into a medicated bloated mess. At least it didn't kill him.. yet

It was minor, but he was on like... The Affair right? And he voiced some robot in a super hero show? I mean, this isn't McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club or anything. The fact that he's working at all is enough of a comeback lol.

Brendan Fraser was good in TWILIGHT OF THE GOLDS and GODS AND MONSTERS, but I don't know that I've seen him in much more.
I thought he'd have a story line in THE AFFAIR on HBO and I was looking forward to it, but he was in only two or three episodes for ten minutes.

Mickey Rourke, Brando, Russell Crowe, Val Kilmer, Leo to some extent...there are plenty of once hot actors that happened to have not aged as gracefully as others. Not everyone can be Patrick Dempsey or John Schneider. At least their beauty was captured on film and will live on forever.

#19 it wasn't just pudge. His whole posture and demeanor changed. He became sad and dopey and shlubby. And the hair loss was the clincher: he was now our mildly retarded brother.

People cite his groping at the hands of the former head of the Hollywood Foreign Press is what sent him on a tailspin, but surely there had to be more. Fraser said he became a recluse after the incident and wondered if the HFPA had him blacklisted but the HFPA does not have any power. They're the jokes of the industry.

If I'm remembering correctly, he has a few kids, a couple of them special needs and sole custody because his wife left them all.
If I'm remembering that correctly, it would be more than enough to deep-6 anyone's looks and life.

Dave Foley. I remember that.
Brendan's issues were a mix of things. Numerous surgeries for injuries from performing his own stunts, which affected his work. The divorce and alimony fight, then the HFPA incident. But people really focus on the HFPA incident as "Hollyweird" destroying actor's lives.

I had a huge crush on him, circa "George of the Jungle" and "The Mummy". He generally played variations on my dream man, the kind of tall, mellow, good-natured guys who make great friends, great husbands, and thoughtful lovers.
It really is a shame he had such shitty taste in film projects. He's a good actor, and I still hope he'll come back as a character actor, but never knew how to pick the winners.

I remember reading an in-depth article about him when he was still in his heydays and a they quoted a top executive who was really against him doing silly films like AIRHEADS and GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE. They wanted him to do prestige films in the vein of SCHOOL TIES but that's not where Fraser's heart was. Which is a shame.

When he was young and handsome and fit he could have done such good work. But he seemed intent on doing commercial garbage. He really fucked up when it came to his career. And once and for all: IS HE GAY? There were lots of rumors to that effect; I remember how some of his fans (this was doing the time of "George of the Jungle) insisted that no, dear little Brendan was NOT gay! I remember his wife looked like a beard; a big blonde (obviously bleached blonde) with very big boobs (implants, most likely). Their divorce was acrimonious; she said she wasn't getting enough money; he said he was poor, and couldn't give the big bucks. So what happened to all his money? Anyway, his divorce was very mysterious. I think he's got some things to hide.

R32 The story in Phoneywood was the marriage to the blonde was a beard and Brendan was really in a relationship with his wife's brother. Since they had two kids and were married for thirteen years I'm dubious. Sat next to them at Le Dome one evening . They seemed like a real couple to me.

Maybe I’m just a sucker for a sob story, but I hadn’t even thought about Brendan Fraser until reading that gq interview and fell a little in love with him. Maybe that’s why current him is the most I’ve ever been attracted to him, particularly when he did that cowboy role on Trust. He played that with so much charm and confidence. I went back and watched all his films after that, and think he was a stunner in those younger years, but nothing matches that Trust character for me. Middle aged Fraser with his dad bod and cute chubby cheeks can get it anytime imo, and I hope that he finds some sort of love and happiness in life.

You can actually look up the court case, the numbers are pretty interesting. When the Fraser’s divorced, the money and assets were split with Brendan getting I think $16 mil and Afton about $9 mil. I can imagine him and his lawyers agreed to almost $1 mil per year in alimony+child support, because when they divorced he really could afford that. In 2008/2009, he had three potential franchises and potential income to help pay that amount. But life decided to give him a big fuck you, and he lost all three. Inkheart didn’t do well enough to get a second movie, the Mummy 4 was dropped in favor of planning the Dark Universe or whatever they call it, and Fraser claims he dropped the Journey sequel because they went back on what they were going to pay him, something like 1/3 of the original pay. Then he did Furry Vengeance which paid well, but fucked his career. And then that broadway play that closed a week after opening. And then Hurricane Sandy happened, and a tree fell on his house, and he fucked his back in a chainsaw accident trying to clean up his yard which put him out of work for a while to heal. It seems like it was just shitty thing after shitty thing for years, and then he’s left with this huge payment he can’t afford, which he originally thought he could afford before all those shitty things happened. But when he went to court to argue for the price to be lowered, because he was making about $1 million a year after work expenses and having to pay $900,000 of that in alimony/child support, the judge said he had the potential to make more and his ex wife didn’t, so they turned his request down. To be fair he had a net worth of $24 mil by that point, with Afton remaining at about $9 mil net worth, so he was never poor and never really argued that he was. I think what was said is that he was looking at his money in vs money out, realized he needed to make major cutbacks in order not to eventually lose everything, and hoped to lower the alimony (not the child support, which he never asked to be lowered) to something more manageable for his current income.
That’s a long winded answer, sorry. But I think it’s more interesting than the “he’s poor and can’t afford it” narrative. I think that court case being made public (thanks TMZ) did a lot of harm to his already faltering career. He was already a bit of a joke by this point, and now everyone thought he was pathetic and broke and 3 seconds away from living in his car and suicidally depressed because of his evil ex wife, who won’t even let him see the kids (even though they have split custody, I believe.) That meme really messed up his image for a while.

I don't understand how that poor woman can possibly make it on a million a year.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 21, 2020 4:28 AM

The alimony he was required to pay was astronomical. These celebrity divorces are so fucked up; who the hell needs a million a year to raise three children? Did he ex-wife want to raise them in a twenty room mansion with a swimming pool and a tennis court and ocean views? Yeah, those are really essential for the upkeep of a few whelps. It's pure greed. But I guess she figured, hey, he's making millions and I deserve a big chunk of that. I wonder if she's still getting her million a month. Maybe the poor dear is only making do with a few hundred thousand a year. How my heart bleeds for her.

To be fair to his ex-wife, she couldn’t just “get a job” and provide the same life for the kids that they’d get at dad’s house. That’s part of why the prices are set higher when it comes to rich divorces with one partner being the sole provider, and I’m not opposed to that. It’s unfair for the child to have to live poor at mom’s house when dad’s a millionaire. But the price really shouldn’t be something that bankrupts one parent in order to provide for the other. Fraser agreed to pay that amount when he could afford it, and when he couldn’t anymore he went back to court to lower it to something he could manage. His ex did seem greedy fighting him on that, though. Divorce, especially when you bring manipulative, money-hungry lawyers into it, tends to bring out the worst in people.

Don’t know if it’s some guy lying or not, but I remember seeing someone on Facebook who posted a comment that he had sex with Brendan Fraser back in 2000 at a bathhouse in the Netherlands or Belgium or some place over there. Stalked his page for a second when I saw that - American guy, brags about traveling a lot in his page, was insanely handsome in the old pictures he had posted of himself. Could be a lie but I kind of believed it. Not the first time I’ve seen comments about Brendan hooking up with guys but this was the only first hand account I saw.
