OMG! This is what the closet does to a man!
I'm thinking more chain smoking, and drinking enough to put Boris Yeltsin to shame, is more likely the contributor to the downfall of his boyish good looks.

He’s 42. He looks like a 42 year-old actor who began with unusual features and has had a lot of laser skin resurfacing. He looks fine. People here fawn over Ryan Phillippe and his facial maintenance is sending him up Kenny Rogers river.

I feel for him in that Larry King interview. At least he’s honest about his alcoholism and his bad behavior. Good for him. A lot of addicted people and (sorry) especially Brits and Irish people seem to just insist they don’t have a problem when it’s obvious they do. I don’t really like seeing people with issues like this mocked. :(

That's good - I think that's the best description of him I've read
Considering previous pictures had him staggering around in the middle of the day, these pictures aren't so bad. But those teeth - why do people get those blindingly bright veneers? He might be better off if he tried to look his age - like Cillian Murphy who wears is age rather well - rather than still trying to look & dress like he's a twenty year old twink

Henry VIII was not always Charles Laughton fat. As a young king he was athletic. It was the sports injuries which deranged him, both physically and mentally: all shown in The Tudors, which otherwise is largely a work of fiction.

R9 he had scars on his face, that seem to have been removed.
JRM always insisted that the blemishes came from childhood tumbles "down the stairs" at home, i.e. the old battered-wife chestnut. His parents were known to be neglectful alkies, who tried shamelessly to palm him off on an orphanage and then later a strange sugar daddy provincial, all before little Jonny turned sixteen, so you work it out.

R87/R88 they look an angel and a demon who happen also to be brothers. Someone’s overlooked a man excellent casting opportunity, there.
Are the two friends in their private lives, or just friendly professional rivals? JRM has said in last interviews that he admires Cillian, but that he has often up against him for parts and that he even gets mistaken for him in public sometimes. I dare say that, beyond their ancestry and their vocation, they haven’t much in common - Cillian is a highly-educated introvert from a respectable comfortable background, while JRM is...well, we know the story, don’t we.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | November 2, 2020 8:50 AM |
^^^if my mapping estimate is correct, then Cillian & JRM grew up about twenty or thirty minutes from each other, in adjacent towns of the same county (Douglas and Cork City, respectively). As teens they could easily have passed by each other on the streets of Cork, without even knowing.

I never bought the gay stories since seeing Velvet Goldmine. In his one chaste kiss with Ewan McGregor, he seemed to be the one with straight-man flinch, not the (reportedly) bisexual Ewan.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 2, 2020 1:58 PM |
R97 so Jonny was trying to pick up girls at rehab, or did he just mention that he was hetero to your mate or the group off-hand? That seems a strangely-personal thing to claim or note in a detox centre, but ok.
R98 Irish Catholics are almost always knee jerk and leery about homosexuality, even their own. It’s poor social conditioning and ingrained inherited phobia, at heart.
Plus, wasn’t JRM’s character in VG a straight-leaning scenester faux-bisexual, anyway? He gives up on gay love as if it’s a drug addiction and goes back on his sexuality as well as everything about himself in the end, unlike the characters played by Ewan & Christian who seem to be comfortably and consistently gay all the way through. It would be in-character for JRM’s rather shifty ambiguous character to show some hesitation or discomfort.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | November 2, 2020 2:49 PM |
R88 missed the funnier shot of Cillian & Jonny at that event, where they look like the two beautiful but cynical queens out of drag who are holding court at the bar, judging you from afar and finding you wanting.

He was super-beautiful back in the day to be sure. And totally yum in Match Point. But I always thought The Tudors was a tragic missed opportunity for us JRM lovers. For all the sex and nudity in that show, his scenes were pretty chaste. Very few - hardly any - gratuitous shots of his ass, etc. I remember watching every Sunday hoping to find some good scenes to jerk off too, but the Henry Cavill material was always racier.

R66 it comes as a shock to me that JRM is interested in women to such a strong (philandering?) degree.
Having seen many situations where he interacts with females in public or in press, I have observed that he couldn’t behave with more diffidence or disdain. To me, even the way he sits and stares very much telegraphs, “thank you, Madame, but I am a homosexual”. Perhaps he is so professional and savvy that he keeps his womanising strictly off-camera and in civilian-only circles, or perhaps he does not like the company of women in the industry.

on Ewan McGregor: “*giggle* the STRAIGHTEST man you’ll ever meet in all your life, of course...but I found it so much easier to do those things [simulate gay affection and eroticism] than Ewan did”
on Keira Knightley: “like Audrey Hepburn - there is something so ethereal about her, there was something so pure about her, so spiritually pure. What an extraordinary kind young lady she was, and still is.”
on working with Philip Seymour Hoffman: “one of the greatest memories I have.”
on Cavill: “I’m so happy at his success. It was a great pleasure to do THE TUDORS; I spent four years with Henry, who was an incredibly disciplined and hardworking human being. I just like to see his success.”

Wrong Henry!
by Anonymous | reply 133 | November 6, 2020 12:35 AM |
Me too, R130.
What I’ve always liked so much about Jonathan is that he is open about his demons, and seems by and large to inflict pain upon himself more than others when he can help it. There’s something endearing about a person like that, no matter how troubled they are or how far they descend.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he’s a saint, and as an actor I’m sure he’s been involved in a few fairly sordid or cruel scenes, but there’s something about his demeanour and expression that projects the pain of someone vulnerable, empathetic, and still innocent in a strange way (presumably this is why he is catnip to women, who generally love a wounded bird). The sweetness and the core of emotional intelligence is still there in him, I think, but the well is possibly poisoned.
His mother’s death really catalysed this entire slide. If you watch him in video or look at photos of him before 2008, you’ll see a completely different person. Back in the early-mid 00s especially, he was calm, and smiled genuinely, and made a lot of jokes, and seemed at ease in his skin (which, incidentally, physically glowed). Grief and unresolved trauma surrounding abusive family can be so destructive.

Isn't it interesting the Colin Farrell fucked himself over with his drama, bad choices & drug use, but he's slowly worked himself back through indies & back to (relatively) big budget movies and seems to be liked by the H'wood establishment, while they seems completely done with JRM. In addition to being a public mess, he must be difficult behind the scenes.

JRM does not have his chemical dependency in control. He looks like SHIT. Glassine. Colin Farrell is handsome and looks and behaves pretty solidly.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | November 6, 2020 12:41 AM |
Yeah, Farrell seems to have gotten his shit together over the years. Kudos to him for making it work. The problem with JRM is some of the very public meltdowns have made him persona non grata. What studio or producer is going to hire him and then handle the social media/cancel shit storm? Google United Airlines and JRM.

JRM was doing rehab years before his mother died. I'm not saying her death wasn't awful for him, but it gets overblown as to why he spiraled out of control. He'd still have had his issues and addictions if she was alive today. She died an alcoholic at 50 years old.

This helpless, passive Irish catholic is as bad as that other famous helpless, passive Irish Catholic.
The Irish Catholic Church breeds their children to be passive, dependent, meek and weak.

R142 indeed he does. ‘Garjus’, in his tongue.
Perhaps we ought to give him the throne when HM steps down. We’ve not had a vigorous, bohemian, Gaelic male monarch before (no, James VI/I does not count). In fact, a new royal line entirely does sound appealing, and how much worse could Irish drunks really be than Saxon inbreds?
JRM could be better for PR & tourism than Charlie or Wills, and goodness knows he’d shake things up a bit. Might even get Eire reunified, if they don’t all get brave with a man of ROI on the throne.
Of course, in the process he’d self-destruct even further and like as not take the country down with him, and there would almost certainly be a bloody civil war as a result, but if you’re headed for doom as a nation anyway then what a way to go.

Still not over the quiet shelving of the adaptation of 'At Swim Two Birds' Brendan Gleeson was going to direct in 2013, with his son Domhnall, JRM, Cillian, Colin Farrell, Fassbender, and Gabriel Byrne as part of the Irish ensemble cast (half of whom had cleared their schedules, as I understand it).
Gleeson secured funds for the project from the Ministry of Culture in Ireland and the Irish Film Board, as well as investors in Luxemburg, and everything. It must have taken him years just to adapt the novel, it's so complicated. Just a sad waste of a lot of work, money, and potential that this didn't come off. Now most of the proposed cast are either overbooked, retired, write-offs, or too old - maybe Colin & Michael would still be good to go.

R141 chilling. I just went to look up that school, and in the briefest of searches found a horrifying record of child welfare violations. 'Spiritual abuse' isn't the half of it. Can't imagine what a young Jonny must have witnessed and gone through.
And I can hardly believe these schools are still active across ROI as we type, either. Apparently the Order is dwindling worldwide, but over half the remaining 'clergy' and schools are all in Southern Ireland. Say what you like about England & Wales, but the few Christian Brothers schools here closed in ignominy a long time ago.

R2 his eyes are pinned in OP photo. When was it taken? He might have put down the bottle, but as for the rest...R105 asking the real questions.
R1 his tattoos are awful, even by misguided hipster Gen X actor standards. He looks like a Doodle Bear. It’s a pity, that would have been a sweet picture without them staring one in the face. But the veneers are R6 are even more egregious.
R11/R14 oh, I miss the days of wispy fringes on pretty young men. The heyday of that style was 1993-2008, which is not an awful run and gave us plenty of lovely images, but sadly not long enough ago yet to qualify for a comeback.
R44 that is a terrible look. He resembles Gok Wan on a bad day, there. Thick-framed plastic glasses in black were not the one.
R46 ONTD! had a hilariously weird and brutal comment years ago, that he looks like the issue of ‘a lizard who raped a frog’.
R61 the way I heard that rumour, JRM was on the casting couch for VELVET GOLDMINE, leading to him disowning the film and refusing to discuss it for about a decade. He’s fine talking about it now.
R87/R88 Cillian is far paler than warm-toned JRM. Cillian also has near-jet hair where Jonny’s is a medium chestnut, and even the blue of their eyes is somewhat different (Cillian’s being an icy crystalline with no iris ring, JRM’s a watery sea grey/blue with a navy ring).
R120 JRM was partially raised by a gay man. He probably picked up some mannerisms automatically. You’ll notice that in some interviews (like the one at ) he tosses his head and purses his lips in a way most would describe as effeminate.
R122 I loved when JRM attempted to bring his advanced acting techniques into the discussion, and the two girls just stared at him then laughed like Kim Kardashian and changed the subject to “sooooo what is Scarlett Johanssen like?”. It seems like he was humouring them, but in a good-natured way. At least he can have a laugh along with everyday people, unlike other po-faced AC-tors we could name....

I haven't checked in years but from I remember, Colin and Murphy are good friends. Colin and JRM are movie friends. They worked on a couple of movies and did some partying, especially with Alexander. They probably slap each other on the back and catch up when they're in the same spot but aren't really friends outside of the industry. JRM and Murphy aren't friends, they were friendly with each other at a couple of events.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | November 9, 2020 11:48 PM |
Thanks, that clears it up R153.
It's a bit of a pity JRM & Murphy aren't close, because their personalities would complement each other well and that they'd be good for one another, but I suppose I see why they're not friends and probably can't be - journeyman lifestyle of an actor, competition for similar roles, little common ground beyond the shared geographical origin, living in different countries, different ways of handling life's trials. Having Colin as their common link might also make for a bit of jealousy.

Cillian Murphy is very low key, seems painfully shy when promoting his movies and regularly appears in plays & low budget movies in Ireland. Aside from being from Cork, it's hard to imagine what he'd have in common with cracked out hot mess JRM & his equally crazy wife

R156 yeah, they’d have almost nothing in common. But there’s that whole opposites attract thing🤷♀️

R156 from Cillian’s wiki:
[quote] In 2005, Murphy stated he was good friends with fellow Irish actors Colin Farrell, *Jonathan Rhys Meyers*, and Liam Neeson, looking up to the latter like a "surrogate movie dad". Primarily, Murphy's closest friendships are those he made before becoming a star.
People don’t usually say they’re friends with someone when they aren’t. But perhaps Cillian was just being nice, wanting to make Jonny feel included for Colin’s sake.

Dermot Mulroney aged wonderfully. Aidan Quinn aged wonderful and he had the cold pretty eyes as JRM, young. JRM eyes are projecting a soul in another realm. Aidan became a warm looking hot daddy. The fat dad bod helps, though, I agree.

To destroy beauty like that, you have to wreck it on purpose.
Which is likely what JRM intends to do, given how his beauty made of him a target.

Sometimes Wiki doesn't get it right. I was a huge JRM fan back in the day and followed news and fan postings daily. He and Murphy weren't friends and only met up for an award show and event here and there.
There are always reports that JRM was in an orphanage and he has said it's not true. He came from a broken home and he did go and live with the gay farmer as a teen but he was never in an orphanage. He has 3 brothers. He and the 2nd oldest lived with his mother. The two youngest went to live with their paternal grandparents. I also recall he has two half sisters but I don't know much about them.

R156/R166 yeah, I agree. Like I said, I acknowledge that they aren’t friends and it’s not likely they will be.
However, on further investigation, I will say that seems like it could be an idealised, wished-for personal relationship, more on Jonny's side. I’m not usually wrong about this kind of thing, at least intuitively (sorry in advance, tl;dr/flame me if you must: sometimes my old astrology hobby rears its head as one of several COVID coping mechanisms, and I had to get this out of my system, so bear with....)
If anyone goes in for astrology, Jonny's Venus/Mars in Gemini close to his descendent conjuncts Cillian's Sun. This shows Jonny's ambition, admiration, desire nature, and sense of beauty is illuminated, ignited, and literally star-struck by Cillian's presence alone; and, at the same time Jonny's projected fears and wishes are embodied by the other man, too. Most of Cillian's chart falls in Jonny's natal 4th & 5th houses, implying that a relationship between them would naturally engender a feeling of 'home', but also prioritise whatever both find very pleasurable. Cillian's blunt, headstrong, straightforward, and trusting Moon in Aries falls in Jonny's 3rd house, which suggests that there is an unusually high level of comfort and understanding in the emotional rapport the two have; Jonny is completely safe hearing Cillian's tough-love and sharing with Cillian certain feelings that he doesn't feel safe sharing with anyone else, even family or other friends who are closer to him or have been more present in his life (to the outside observer, it may seem as if Cillian can read Jonny's mind and 'horse-whisper' him). When the two are together, there is likely to be a natural emphasis on gentle but intellectual lines of discussion or debate, or if in a more private and relaxed setting a tendency to sink into touchy-feely private exchanges that look ‘psychic’. Both having fire-sign moons, they take to affectionate fierce cooperation and connection like ducks to water.
Being that the pair are close in age, Cillian's Neptune in Sagittarius falls near to Jonny's 12th house Moon/Neptune (sidebar: 12th Moon or Venus can indicate a romantic orientation unknown to oneself) - as the 12th is Neptune's home, this aspect weaves a mystical or 'fairytale' connection which finds expression in art (both love music and intended to be musicians as younger men, so that is a likely mutual ground) or in flights of fancy (with a wordly or curious bent, owing to Sagittarius). As a Moon-Neptune natal person himself, Jonny instantly recognises and vibes with this energy, because it makes him feel 'more like himself'. Jonny may try to sweet-talk Cillian with soothing romantic sentiments, as a way to reciprocate Cillian's heartfelt attention, as well as to get closer. Of course, Neptune is also the planet of narcotics, so there is a chance of Jonny 'addicting' himself to Love more generally, and more specifically to someone who can make him feel this kind of legendary metaphysical otherworldly love he craves....
For Cillian's part, it is harder to tell the effect Jonny has on him astrologically, as his birth-time is unknown. We can identify that he has Mars in Leo loosely conjuncting Jonny's Sun in the 7th and his Mercury in the 8th, meaning Cillian too can feel a pull toward partnership or connection with Jonny (physical or productive when Mars is involved, i.e. sex, conquest, business), albeit in a way more visceral than for Jonny. In social settings Jonny's charismatic being, confidence and showmanship attracts Cillian, and could compel him to react or respond where he might normally be silent. Cillian's natal Sun conjuncts Jonny's natal Jupiter in the 6th house, a warm upbeat and fortunate energy dynamic that may improve one another's health merely via time spent together. Cillian's Gemini Sun wants to connect with people on a cerebral level, but the fact he has an intuitive direct line to Jonny's heart & mind without saying a word may tempt Cillian to dig deeper in search of something in Jonny that isn't known to anyone else....
