Came out of retirement to give us one of the finest acting performances we’ve ever seen, and this is the thanks he gets?
Don' get me started.

OP, I agree, but Oscars are rarely given to the actor who was best.
In ten years, people will be wondering why Brad Pitt won over everyone else in the category (they're ALL better than he is).

Well whatever. I'm sure he's glad he gave a good performance. He didn't do it JUST FOR AN AWARD you fucking dumb cunt.

Fuck you, R3. He deserved it. He fucking EARNED it!

has he ever won or been nominated before?

What about me?!

R5 Yes, years ago he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar but I've forgotten the name of the movie. I think Bruce Willis was in it.

Was he really retired?

Joe Pesci is terrible and annoying. The Irishman was a long boring movie.

Considering how much his performance was due to CGI, Pesci should have won in the Special Effects category.
Besides, Brad Pitt is hotter. That's why he won.

Guess they were sick of all the good ol boys club winners. Brad Pitt suffered heavily under Jolie, so people feel sorry for him.

Yeah nothing says roguish Hollywood outsider like Brad Pitt.

"The Irishman" was an over-long disappointment, but Pesci gave the best performance in it. DeNiro and Pacino gave us the same old schtick.

Nominated for Raging Bull; won for Goodfellas.

Pesci was great, but he didn't show up for the Golden Globes, so maybe people thought, well, he already has an Oscar, let's give it to someone else. As someone who votes for the SAG awards (I voted for Pesci), that's how I sometimes voted for other categories (and as I'm being honest), I'm sure others do as well for all awards shows. Or they like this person or don't like this person or this person already has too many awards.

No. His Oscar worthy performance was the bum in With Honors. He was robbed that year.

He didn’t show up because word got to him that the fix was in. Everybody knew Brad Pitt would win that award, R18.

Sweet Jesus, after finally watching the mediocre Once Upon a Time in Hollywood I’m more convinced than ever that Pesci should’ve won that Oscar.

I agree with you OP. And I really enjoyed the film but thought what took it from a classic to a "good film" was the overlong Deniro as a senior citizen shit. WAY TO LONG.

No, Pitt deserved it. His performance was a breath of fresh air. He didn't need any big emotional outbursts. He didn't perform a long, overly-dramatic monologue. His character wasn't some kind of historical figure or cancer patient or big physical transformation, or whatever stereotype of an Oscar-winning role. He was just gave a subtle, fully-realized performance that brought the character he was playing life, to the point that Cliff Booth felt REAL, like a person that exists beyond the narrow scope of the film. Cliff Booth felt like his own entity, like he was the hero of a different story that we never got to see. Brad Pitt made that happen. That kind of role needs to be awarded more often. Pure acting, without the gimmicks to make it stand out.
