"Angie" - starring the legendary Donna Pescow - premiered forty-one years ago tonight, February 8, 1979 on ABC.
Donna Pescow's significant weight gain destroyed the show.

R1 What did they expect, hiring an actress whose last name ended in COW?

She was cute AF, haterz!

How did Debralee Scoot ever get an acting job?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 9, 2020 6:44 AM |
Did her pussy stink ??

Pescow was super frumpy and fireplug shaped in Angie. I never bought Robert Hays' attraction to her.

Though the credit sequences changed, one comedy truth burned eternal: the hilarity of the cast members having food spilled on them.
It was Angie's version of the pivot.

Debralee Scott was already know for playing "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" 's younger sister.

known, that is.

R8, shows often have plain girls sought after by hot guys.
Look at the hot men chasing after Meredith Grey on Grey's Anatomy?
I saw Pescow in Hollywood recently; she looks amazing.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 9, 2020 7:04 AM |
I can remember tuning in to listen to the theme song, then , promptly changing the channel.

Angie was the show that forced ABC to change it's theme song to "Almost the One" in 1980.

r10 There were many, many more, including some that were big hits, like "The Theme From S.W.A.T," (Billboard #1 in 1976), "How Do You Talk to an Angel" from "The Heights" (#1 in 1992), "Makin' It", "Hawaii Five-0," "Secret Agent Man," "Hill Street Blues," etc.

Theme from Welcome Back Kotter (John Sebastian) #1 in 1976. You couldn’t get away from that song.

Donna Pescow looked like all the Italian girls my friends pumped in college. She has Clean Asshole Face even though she is not Italian.sssssssssssssssssssss

She was cute and not fat during the run of Angie. However, she was short and curvy (legit curvy, with a very defined waist) and that reads as frumpy on film.
What killed Angie was the fact that the show got a sweetheart time slot right after Mork and Mindy, which was #3 in its opening season. Angie was rated #5 for its first (half) season, a spectacular showing even considering its lead-in.
For Angie's second season, it got a berth right after Happy Days...but slid in the ratings, losing much of the Happy Days audience. Angie was moved later that season to after Laverne & Shirley, but the ratings stayed down and the show was cancelled.
ABC had completely changed its schedule for the 1979-80 season, and its hit shows all went into freefall. Mork & Mindy (which had tied for #3 the previous year with Happy Days) fell to #27. Happy Days fell to #17, Laverne & Shirley (#1 in '77-78) fell out of the top 40!
So really, ABC is what killed Angie.

Allan Carr wanted Debralee Scott to play Marty in "Grease", which is actually interesting casting.

Fascinating that you DLEGs remember minute details of TV shows that aired over 40 years ago.
What do you attribute that to?
Are you Aspies?
Or TV is just the center of your lives?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 9, 2020 9:40 PM |
All those kids are in their late 40s and 50s. Half the people/actors are dead and everyone else old. Why do I think of these things?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 9, 2020 9:53 PM |
R30, great question. There were only 3 networks back then and a lot of gays weren't good at sports and we weren't always hopeful for the future.
Maybe family life wasn't so hot.
But....we had television.
TV was a refuge. Personally, I absorbed it all. My memory is encyclopedic when it comes to TV.
I can't tell you who the housewives or Orange County or Atlanta; I can't tell you who all the doctors are on Grey's Anatomy over th years, but I recall Angie quite well. The snooty sister-in-law. The kid sister; the niece, Doris Roberts as the mom. She did that role so well.
I was a kid watching Another World and I remember Clarice's infamous 'Hiya, Iris,' that Harding Lemay wrote about in his memoir.
TV was a double edged sword. It got me through some hard times, but as an adult (well into adulthood), it's given me a false impression of how relationships should be. Alas, they're not.
People should care. Alas, they do not.
Pescow btw should have been nominated for an Oscar for Saturday Night Fever and she was living the dream of landing a hottie out of her league in handsome Robert Hays. That movie's a classic and it's why we remember fondly Angie.

when I say I wasn't good at sports, I just meant that I watched a lot of tv.
I know practice for sports wasn't happening at night when Angie was on.
At least, I don't think.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 9, 2020 10:01 PM |
The three networks is exactly why we remember these things - why we all remember these things. Weird how tv is not a collective experience. But it sure seemed like it when you came into school the next morning and we all talked about it.
Philly was fucking grimy in that opener.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 9, 2020 10:03 PM |
All that r32 said...but we also talked about these shows the next day and repeated lines over and over. Among my friends, "Football, you bet!" became a catchphrase from the very obscure show The San Pedro Beach Bums.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 9, 2020 10:03 PM |
This show made me want to move to Philly for some reason.
Debralee Scott ...man that's a blast from the past. I always wondered how she became famous??

R36, I remember thinking in high school how it felt to chime in on talk about Charlie's Angels the next day.
I didn't know for 100% sure I was gay (dad died young so the two conflicted -- wanting a dad and coming into my sexuality #fuckedup) but I could chime in and talk to the guys when Charlie's Angels came up.
Of course, the conversations went like this:
"I want to rub my face in Farrah's Major Fawcetts!"
"I got a boner when Jaclyn Smith wore that white bikini!"
"Man, Sabrina solve the case AGAIN! And she really immerses herself in those undercover roles. 'I want that baby, John. See that I get it.' BITCH!"

In my case, I just watched the entire series (Angie) over the past 18 months on DVD, but I did remember it very fondly from when it first aired.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 10, 2020 4:46 AM |
They should have used this as the opening theme song. It would have given the show a whole different vibe.

If there's ever a Datalounge karaoke party, I predict hissing battles over who gets to sing "Different Worlds (Theme from 'Angie')", as well as coming to blows over whether "It's a Living" or "Making a Living" scans better.

I met Donna Pescow through work and eventually told her that I liked her in Angie. She and Doris Roberts and Robert Hays lived near each other, and were friends for years after the show ended.. She sent me this photo signed.

Robert Hayes was so damn hot and had an inexplicably short career. Great looks and a good ear for comedy and he disappeared after "Airplane" pretty much. Cruel business.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 22, 2020 9:32 PM |
I got caught lip syncing the theme song one day while a re-run episode was coming on. I am still surprised my parents were shocked I later came out as gay. Lol
I always thought the tempo was a bit too slow. I like the more disco version of OP’s video!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 22, 2020 9:38 PM |
I agree Robert Hayes disappearance is a crime. Gorgeous. Donna Pescow however never made sense as a star. She was perfect for the Sat Night Fever role - but not really movie star material.
I loved Angie because it was supposedly set in my hometown and made it feel like Philly actually mattered.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 22, 2020 9:53 PM |
Robert Hayes wasn't that GREAT looking. I would describe him ca. 1979 as BLANDLY handsome.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 22, 2020 10:20 PM |
Maybe it was that drinking problem that held back Robert Hays’ career?

Tall, great hair, amazing lips, and funny. Short career while Gavin McLeod moves from show to show. Insane.
