Leslie Jones 'Abstained' from Voting for Most Academy Awards Over Lack of Black Nominees

Thoughts?

Jones, who became a member of the Oscars voting pool ahead of the 2018 ceremony, shared on Friday that the selection process “didn’t take long” this year, as she only voted for categories where black filmmakers, composers and actors received nominations.

“Welp I just finished voting for the Oscars. It didn’t take long cause there are no black people on it,” she wrote on Twitter and Instagram, noting that she voted for Cynthia Erivo “and abstained from the rest.”

She’s a demure & delicate flower, the epitome of class.

If I were able to vote, I’d want to raise hell about the lack of gay people and representation in Hollywood.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 2February 9, 2020 12:21 AM

If gays are 10% of the population and Blacks are 12% then I would say gays are definitely the underrepresented party here. Obviously there’s some overlap as in Black Gays.

by Anonymousreply 3February 9, 2020 12:25 AM

R3 but only about 5% of the population are LGBT. That includes the T. Where did you get 10%?! Lmaooo

by Anonymousreply 4February 9, 2020 12:28 AM

The fact that she is a voting member is jaw-dropping.

by Anonymousreply 5February 9, 2020 12:30 AM

UCLA has the percentage of LGBT people as even lower than 5%. Yet alone that made up number of 10% lmaoooooooo

by Anonymousreply 6February 9, 2020 12:31 AM

Who gives a shit.

by Anonymousreply 7February 9, 2020 12:32 AM

I think it was unfair to those in the running. Did she say that during all these votes or did she keep it to herself? what good did it do? It makes me mad to see DVD's listed on ebay that were for the people voting and the DVD was unopened.

by Anonymousreply 8February 9, 2020 12:32 AM

Well, if she's going to be so thoughtless and knee-jerk about voting, this gives me a reason to dislike her and not see her movies or TV shows or specials.

by Anonymousreply 9February 9, 2020 12:32 AM

How is Jones even a member of the Academy? Have they lowered their standards to get more diverse? I suppose that's a good thing since it'll likely lead to more diverse nominations over time, but it won't happen overnight.

Also, is Jones unable to participate in the nomination process, or did she abstain from that as well?

by Anonymousreply 10February 9, 2020 12:37 AM

To the lmaaoooooooo dumbass troll:

It's funny that you think self-reporting is accurate when it comes to determining the number of gay people in the country. The "official" number is much lower than reality. It's called common sense. Try it sometime.

Leslie Jones is lacking in almost every way a person can be lacking in.

by Anonymousreply 11February 9, 2020 12:46 AM

But that isn’t fact. That is opinion. The number recorded is actually being generous. They are counting possible closet cases.

The same can be said about black people. And white people for that matter. They sure love counting browns as white now...

by Anonymousreply 12February 9, 2020 12:48 AM

I want to see more out gay actors winning awards and more out gay representation in Hollywood. I don’t care that Leslie Jones is pushing the way she is. I want gays to do the same.

by Anonymousreply 13February 9, 2020 12:48 AM

FACT is that there are not that many gay people. Outside of major cities you don’t have many gays. That is FACT.

by Anonymousreply 14February 9, 2020 12:48 AM

What films with out gay actors playing out gay characters make tons of money??? R14

by Anonymousreply 15February 9, 2020 12:49 AM

She's annoying

by Anonymousreply 16February 9, 2020 12:50 AM

No wonder they fired her.

by Anonymousreply 17February 9, 2020 12:51 AM

I'd like to get my hands on Leslie Jones's eyebrows. (She has the dreaded "Instagram eyebrows," ugh!)

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 18February 9, 2020 12:53 AM

Never heard of her. Who?

by Anonymousreply 19February 9, 2020 2:05 AM

I hope members of the academy remember and abstain from voting for her projects in the future.

by Anonymousreply 20February 9, 2020 2:11 AM

Thank you, r5. Nothing I have seen her do is remotely funny either.

by Anonymousreply 21February 9, 2020 2:22 AM

I just found her less funny and really don't care what she says. If she had any principals, she would resign from the Academy.

by Anonymousreply 22February 9, 2020 2:29 AM

Black people are tribal, i.e. they always back each other up, no matter what. Thus, they just automatically vote for black nominees, regardless. I won't be surprised if Cynthai Erivo gets the lion's share of black votes despite being the worst nominee of the bunch.

by Anonymousreply 23February 9, 2020 2:30 AM

I don't understand how she even got in to the Academy?

And so what she's effectively saying is that voting isn't about actual talent, that it's only about race? And if there were more people on the ballot to her liking, she would have only voted for them because of their skin color and not their talent?

by Anonymousreply 24February 9, 2020 2:38 AM

I wish she would go away.

Imagine a white person saying they didn't vote because nobody was white.

by Anonymousreply 25February 9, 2020 2:39 AM

Well, gay people are pretty tribal too. Read all the threads about Pete Buttigieg, full of guys swooning over him and criticizing everyone else. It's a natural response when you're a minority.

That said, I don't really respect it. If I were an actor voting in the Oscars, I would genuinely want to show my respect for my fellow actor who did the best job.

by Anonymousreply 26February 9, 2020 2:41 AM

r24 nails it. The way I interpret this is that she would automatically have voted for a black entry, regardless of how good a white entry might have been. Has it occurred to the good Ms. Jones that perhaps the reason there weren't mote black choices was because they might not have been any good?

Jesus Christ!

by Anonymousreply 27February 9, 2020 2:56 AM

She's a racist POS.

by Anonymousreply 28February 9, 2020 2:58 AM

12% Population and we gonna need 98% Representation!

by Anonymousreply 29February 9, 2020 3:03 AM

Ridiculous. Nobody would wear earrings like that!

by Anonymousreply 30February 9, 2020 3:13 AM

R2 Timothée Chalamet is straight?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 31February 9, 2020 6:06 AM

And she's not being castigated for being a racist cunt because?

by Anonymousreply 32February 9, 2020 6:13 AM

This is patently racist and should be grounds for dismissal from Academy membership.

by Anonymousreply 33February 9, 2020 6:42 AM

Marginalized people speaking up is not racist. It's 2020 now, and it's fashionable and quite ok to speak openly and boldly about white people.

White people have had the floor to say and do whatever the fuck they wanted to for the last 400 years years.

It's some else's turn now to say whatever they want. And it's not just black people speaking up.

by Anonymousreply 34February 9, 2020 7:10 AM

What a racist bitch.

by Anonymousreply 35February 9, 2020 7:11 AM

R34 rationalises racism and blatant HYPOCRISY!

by Anonymousreply 36February 9, 2020 7:17 AM

If only she could abstain from "acting".

by Anonymousreply 37February 9, 2020 7:30 AM

R36 You are a jealous bitch.

by Anonymousreply 38February 9, 2020 7:36 AM

There is no such thing as racism against white people in America. This is the 21st century and it POC still being attacked by white supremacists.

Please stop being delusional.

by Anonymousreply 39February 9, 2020 7:37 AM

She has Oprah’s eyes.

by Anonymousreply 40February 9, 2020 7:45 AM

R34 R38 R39 Pathetic ignorant racist hypocrite

by Anonymousreply 41February 9, 2020 7:53 AM

R34, she is not marginalized, she is a privileged cunt.

by Anonymousreply 42February 9, 2020 7:54 AM

R41 Please stop talking about yourself like that.

by Anonymousreply 43February 9, 2020 7:55 AM

R43 She is marginalized. She's a part of a group that has historically been marginalized.

by Anonymousreply 44February 9, 2020 7:56 AM

R34 It is only because of far-leftist white women in positions of power in the entertainment business (e.g., Hollywood, Broadway) that black people feel immune to criticism and consequences. For some reason, white leftist women are obsessed with being seen as 'woke.' (White leftist men are pussywhipped or emasculated). But it won't last since politics are ever evolving and fluctuating.

by Anonymousreply 45February 9, 2020 8:47 AM
How is Jones even a member of the Academy?

She was in Ghostbusters, Rose. A timeless classic for the ages.

by Anonymousreply 46February 9, 2020 9:11 AM

R44, she is part of a group that has done much to marginalize itself with the rap music, Ebonics, and glorification of gang violence.

by Anonymousreply 47February 9, 2020 9:24 AM

Like the one lady that said she was rooting for everyone black.. imagine a white person saying they were rooting for everyone white lol

How about rooting for whoever was the best.

by Anonymousreply 48February 9, 2020 9:27 AM

She is fucking exhausting. She must be a chore to work with/work for.

Cynthia was so dull in Harriet, which is a terrible film. Renee totally enveloped Judy.

And Alfre Woodard was much more deserving of a nom than Cynthia.

by Anonymousreply 49February 9, 2020 9:27 AM

R49 Alfre Woodward is WAY underrated! She already has an Oscar nod for CROSS CREEK but she deserved a nod for PASSION FISH, more so than Vanessa Redgrave in HOWARDS END. WTF was that all about? Even Helena Bonham Carter in the same movie deserved a nod over Vanessa. smh

by Anonymousreply 50February 9, 2020 9:42 AM

R12 James Coco is on this list. Surely not?

by Anonymousreply 51February 9, 2020 9:46 AM
FACT is that there are not that many gay people. Outside of major cities you don’t have many gays. That is FACT.

Yeah, gays only exist in coastal cities, those coastal elites. It’s why you don’t see gays in Africa or the Middle East. They have more problems to worry about than being gay.

by Anonymousreply 52February 9, 2020 9:55 AM

Careful Gayle: Your "funky dog-haired bitch" crown has another contender.

by Anonymousreply 53February 9, 2020 10:05 AM

She should be publicly ejected from the academy for confessing that she won’t vote on merit.

by Anonymousreply 54February 9, 2020 10:08 AM

Who cares what percentage of the entire population gays and blacks make up? It should be what percentage of the film industry these groups make up that matter. That’s what makes up the nomination pool- not the general public at large.

by Anonymousreply 55February 9, 2020 10:51 AM

No one said gays don’t exist outside of main cities, there just arent many of them. For some reason gays believe there are more of themselves than there are when in reality everywhere you look it is mostly straight people. It’s simple math.

by Anonymousreply 56February 9, 2020 10:56 AM
It makes me mad to see DVD's listed on ebay that were for the people voting and the DVD was unopened.

When I was a critic I got several screeners this way that I couldn't get through normal means. Always unopened, always before the ceremonies. I think freelance TV and film critics are more knowledgeable about what's nominated for these awards than the actual guild members are.

That said, I doubt Jones was auctioning off her screeners. It tended to be the old folks or people who scammed their way into screeners without having any real credentials.

Kinda weird that people are implying she's a scammer, and talking about "Ebonics" and "rap" and such. It's all off topic and pretty racist, to be honest.

by Anonymousreply 57February 9, 2020 11:22 AM

Maybe she should not be part of the Academy if her vote is only based on race and minority issues. The Oscars are there to celebrate film, filmmakers and artists. It's all about politics and political correctness these days.

by Anonymousreply 58February 9, 2020 1:45 PM

r34: how is Leslie Jones "marginalized"? She is actually privileged, a person of wealth and status who belongs to an elite group of people who hand out awards for achievements in the cinematic arts.

And, yes, by discriminating against nominees based on their race, she is being racist.

by Anonymousreply 59February 9, 2020 2:45 PM

How nice for her. How brave. How meaningful.

How boring.

Yada yada yada.

Special demands are bullshit. I'm biracial and strong for equity, but enough crapping out the usual boo-hoos because your candidate didn't get a nomination. It's disgusting.

Black people can be just as mediocre or missed or overlooked as anyone else. That's not a civil rights issue. It's an awards-are-lousy issue.

Shit.

by Anonymousreply 60February 9, 2020 2:50 PM

Then she shouldn't be allowed to be a voting member

by Anonymousreply 61February 9, 2020 2:57 PM
The fact that she is a voting member is jaw-dropping.
I don't understand how she even got in to the Academy?

I know she's an Emmy nominee.

Could it be that people who are Emmy nominated also automatically become Academy members?

by Anonymousreply 62February 9, 2020 3:06 PM

Oh Leslie, I'm just SICK about this!

by Anonymousreply 63February 9, 2020 3:10 PM

She got into the academy because of that white guilt affirmative action moment a few years ago. But all she sees is color, so she’s actually a part of the problem. Loser bitch should be collecting subway tolls in a booth somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 64February 9, 2020 3:12 PM

She's pathetic.

Her reaction to the upcoming Ghostbusters movie was [italic]exactly[/italic] what she had accused others of in regard to hers.

by Anonymousreply 65February 9, 2020 3:14 PM

I guess there's no literacy requirement.

by Anonymousreply 66February 9, 2020 3:21 PM

Even Parasite was too white for her

by Anonymousreply 67February 9, 2020 5:58 PM

That photo is terrifying.

by Anonymousreply 68February 9, 2020 6:04 PM

R68 Just like the rest of white society who gave us Trump.

by Anonymousreply 69February 9, 2020 6:36 PM

Exactly, R67. Outstanding work will overcome any kind of lingering racial bias that may exist.

by Anonymousreply 70February 9, 2020 6:36 PM

R45 No actually black people have always been very outspoken against white people, especially if you look at history. This has nothing at all to do with weak white liberals. This has to do with speaking truth to power, injustice, racism, inequality, and everything else wrong in America.

Black people have never held they're tongues when it came to speaking about whites. White are the ones who can't take the truth. To them, it's a form of oppression that people are telling them to knock it off. Being socially conscious and speaking out firmly about the ills and injustices committed by white society against blacks and other racial ethnic minority groups is not s trend. This has been the case in America historically, and that will never change.

That's exactly why it's ok to publicity bash white people on national television and no one says a damn thing about it. When your white and in a privileged position, you have to just deal with it. If minorities have to take abuse from people like Sean hannity and Rush Limbaugh etc, then I think white people can deal with minorities publicly telling the truth about them as well.

by Anonymousreply 71February 9, 2020 6:45 PM

"When your white"

by Anonymousreply 72February 9, 2020 6:52 PM
she is part of a group that has done much to marginalize itself with the rap music, Ebonics, and glorification of gang violence.

She is also part of a group that has done much to stand out, with Barack Obama, Kehinde Wiley, high rates of entrepreneurialism (look at Tyler Perry) and much more.

Good lord. Do we judge all whites over monster truck rallies and gun nuts?

by Anonymousreply 73February 9, 2020 6:57 PM

Love her!

by Anonymousreply 74February 9, 2020 7:00 PM

Is it true she can’t read?

by Anonymousreply 75February 9, 2020 7:03 PM

How many ‘industry’ people are extended Academy voting rights who aren’t winners or even nominees? It seems strange how a teevee star gets to vote.

Funny in GBHbusters

by Anonymousreply 76February 9, 2020 7:04 PM

Alfre Woodard was robbed (and I agree about Passion Fish! I listed that in the other thread a few days ago as one of my favorite performances in films)

Sadly Harriet was horrible and I agree about Cynthia. I suspect she got the nomination because how the hell do you NOT nominate an actress playing Harriet Tubman??

Alfre was far more deserving and I would have loved to see her get in there.

by Anonymousreply 77February 9, 2020 7:06 PM

I want Renee to win but, for me, Alfre would have been my other choice. Both Renee and Alfre would have had the narrative of long careers, but Alfre has never won and, shockingly, has only been nominated once. Shameful.

I think Clemency was screwed because it's a downer of a film and I don't think it was promoted well or they dropped the ball when it came to campaigning.

by Anonymousreply 78February 9, 2020 7:12 PM

She's admitting she votes based on skin color and nothing else and refuses to fully participate. She should be kicked out of the academy for being a racist bitch.

by Anonymousreply 79February 9, 2020 7:20 PM

Her antics, as usual, just serve to reinforce the perception of racists and make them feel justified.

by Anonymousreply 80February 9, 2020 7:21 PM

So last year, we had black people win Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Animated Feature, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Writing, as well as the Honorary Oscar for Cicely Tyson. That doesn't include all the other nominations.

Guess what? How many Latino/as or Asians won Oscars in 2018? Or does she not care?

by Anonymousreply 81February 9, 2020 7:24 PM

How did this crass, unfunny bitch score voting privileges with the Academy? It can't possibly be because of her acting abilities. Oh, wait... she black.

by Anonymousreply 82February 9, 2020 7:28 PM

She should also feel a kindred with very unattractive people and vote to make them represented too.

by Anonymousreply 83February 9, 2020 7:28 PM

It is rather incredible that someone with such limited film work was able to nominated and accepted as a member of the Academy.

That means she gets to vote on all acting awards. Leslie Jones. She gets a vote out of around 1100 into who gets nominated and who wins.

How is she part of this club?

by Anonymousreply 84February 9, 2020 8:09 PM

She is further proof why the Oscars are a joke.

by Anonymousreply 85February 9, 2020 8:23 PM

R80 Those white racists are racist anyway without Leslie having to say or do anything.

Remember, it's inherent.

by Anonymousreply 86February 9, 2020 8:24 PM

R85 The Oscars have always been a joke.

by Anonymousreply 87February 9, 2020 8:25 PM

This bitch isn't very smart. She's voting for her PEERS. And they will remember this comment when casting and writing scripts.

She's always complaining about something and pulling the race card.

Call me a racist - I'm sick of her shit.

by Anonymousreply 88February 9, 2020 8:28 PM

That’s downright racist.

And to those who wonder how she is a member of the Academy: white guilt and black bullying. I can think of a dozen other black people who deserved her spot, but they’re not bullies.

by Anonymousreply 89February 9, 2020 8:40 PM

A Madea Family Funeral should have been nominated for Best Picture.

by Anonymousreply 90February 9, 2020 8:43 PM

Am I the only one 100% sure gay people are more than the stated 3-5% of the population? How does that surveying account for closet cases? There's millions of them.

by Anonymousreply 91February 9, 2020 8:49 PM

One thing is for sure, gay white men are the most racist.

Everyday right here on DL.

by Anonymousreply 92February 9, 2020 8:51 PM

R91, I couldn't agree more.

You can not factor in the closet cases. I may never have a BF but there are men who live every day miserable and they don't know how to get out of it.

by Anonymousreply 93February 9, 2020 8:55 PM

R91 And the rest of society is sick of white Americas shit too.

It goes both ways.

by Anonymousreply 94February 9, 2020 9:05 PM

R91 White America gave black people the race card. There is no such thing as the race card when it comes to black Americans.

It's a unique reality, gifted to them by white society. White people created the "Race Card."

But you knew this already.

by Anonymousreply 100February 9, 2020 9:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 101February 9, 2020 9:32 PM

She doesn't even look like Aretha Franklin. And she's not an American black. She's not tied to our history. It's the same with Obama and Harris.

Their black but not apart of that slave, Jim crow legacy. So, completely different legacies and completely different pedigrees and different cultures.

Those things matter.

by Anonymousreply 102February 9, 2020 9:49 PM

R46 is the epitome of someone who thinks they're clever, but not.

The question remains.

by Anonymousreply 103February 9, 2020 9:58 PM

R86 no. Her acting like a classic stereotype makes things worse

by Anonymousreply 104February 9, 2020 10:37 PM

R103, I believe Jones was invited to be a member a few years back following the Oscars so white controversy, when there was a push to make the Academy more "diverse"...despite largely negligible film credits.

by Anonymousreply 105February 9, 2020 11:13 PM

R102:

Suggesting that Mr. Obama is not "tied" to "our" history is hurtfully exclusionary and exemplifies a self-segregating danger to us all.

It's like saying that if you didn't lose family (family you don't know anything about, for terrible reasons) in the Holocaust you can't be a Jew experiencing anti-semitism. And you can't sing a Streisand song unless you have a prominent nose.

No, dear.

Ms. Jones's stance, in ascribing racism as the reason more people from her approved racial group weren't on the ballot, is shallow at best and racist at worst. Suggesting that Kamala Harris is not a "real" African American is racist.

The most racist people in our shared society are those who do not see anyone as worthy except by passing the test of an exquisite lense called a mirror.

And pretending that a person has to look like Aretha to play Aretha is naive. Few people looked less like Aretha than Aretha herself in the last 10 years of her life.

Amani. Pamoja.

by Anonymousreply 106February 10, 2020 1:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 114February 10, 2020 4:22 AM

R73, white people are still a big majority though. Black people, on the other hand, are a minority but commit a disproportionate amount of the crime. Asians are an even smaller minority who commit virtually no crime. Black people should focus more on holding other black people accountable. What other blacks do harm the black community far more than your average white supremacist.

by Anonymousreply 115February 10, 2020 5:26 AM

She might consider abstaining from breathing for perhaps 20 minutes.

What’s wrong with nominating actors and directors based on their ability rather than their skin color?

by Anonymousreply 116February 10, 2020 5:43 AM

Well, this bitch didn't get her wish since Renee (deservedly) won. And I assume she voted for Cynthia in Best Song. Well, Elton won for that TIRED song.

by Anonymousreply 118February 10, 2020 7:24 AM

They need to remove her asap. I hope she gets blackballed.

by Anonymousreply 119February 10, 2020 1:09 PM

Has no one called her out for this blatant prejudice? Not even woke Twitter?

by Anonymousreply 120February 10, 2020 3:19 PM

No, r120, because her position -- judging people based on immutable characteristics such as skin color -- IS wokeness personified.

by Anonymousreply 121February 10, 2020 3:32 PM

I know but not even ONE rational person has pointed out her hypocrisy?

by Anonymousreply 122February 10, 2020 3:37 PM

Wow. This really matters to me.

by Anonymousreply 123February 10, 2020 3:53 PM

I'm not trying to be dismissive - OK I guess I am. But does Ms. Jones have a lot of influence over the opinion of others? Why is this newsworthy?

I think what you get here on DL is the true way people in general, not just gay, really feel. Here people speak freely because of the anonymity. I'm White and I find people say the same things you see here when there are no Blacks around, but when our Black friends join the conversation the tone completely changes.

The change in tone is partly out of respect but it's also because if you say anything that deviates from complete political correctness and deference you'll be labeled a racist and socially crucified, so there's no room for genuineness anymore.

R76

You can apply to join even if you've never been nominated or awarded anything. The Academy has standards about the quality of movies that applicants need to have to be accepted. Apparently Rob Schneider applied over and over again and was always denied because he has nothing better on his filmography than Deuce Bigelow and whatever movie Adam Sandler shit out lately.

by Anonymousreply 130February 10, 2020 9:41 PM

R126 I am white and NEVER say racist shit. And I don’t surround myself with racists.

Maybe it is just YOU.

by Anonymousreply 131February 10, 2020 9:44 PM
[R73], white people are still a big majority though. Black people, on the other hand, are a minority but commit a disproportionate amount of the crime. Asians are an even smaller minority who commit virtually no crime. Black people should focus more on holding other black people accountable. What other blacks do harm the black community far more than your average white supremacist.

1. Crimes committed and arrests + conviction are 2 very different things. Black people are more heavily policed and treated more harshly at every step of the criminal justice system. Many academic studies have been done, a great deal of data confirming this, has been collected.

2. Most people regardless of race are not criminals. An extremely large percentage of black criminal convictions are nonviolent drug offenses. Yet generally speaking black drug use is no greater than white use. Same goes for drug sells. Black people, because of how they are policed are more likely to be arrested and then more likely to be convicted.

3. Most crime is intra-racial. 80+ percent of white violent crime victims are victimized by whites.

4. White supremacy = the long and complicated legacies of slavery, Jim Crow segregation and all of the modern institutional racism that has followed and continues to this day, including within the criminal justice system. White supremacy produced that incredible wealth gap that currently exists. White supremacy continues to rob black people of opportunities, shutting many many people out of achieving the American Dream. The American Middle Class was built of socialistic programs that excluded black people.

Without holding each other accountable black people would not have been able to carve out the success that they continue to create, despite the institutional racism that continues to confront them. No crimes committed by black people are not "far more harmful" than the legacies of slavery, Jim Crow and modern day institutional racism.

5. Seventy percent of whites have NO black friends. Certainly most dataloungers don't have black friends. Outside of an absurd bogus mythology, most Americans know very little about American History. What make so many here believe that they are experts on black people. You don't know any. You know nothing about them or their history in this country. Yet you show up here to give these idiotic head in ass lectures.

6. Minus white supremacy, white and black communities face many of the same problems. Problems which are only attributed to race, when faced by black people.

7. White people rather burn this country to the ground, rather than support racial equality. And with the help of Trump and his party, that is exactly what whites are doing.

R132, the reason black neighborhoods are policed more heavily is because that is where the most victim reporting is. And when you look at victim reporting statistics, black men still commit the most rapes. And only a minority of convicted black people are for drug possession. The vast majority are still violent offenders.

by Anonymousreply 133February 11, 2020 12:58 AM

* Only about 1 percent of African Americans — and no more than 2 percent of black males — will commit a violent crime in a given year;

* No more than 0.7 percent (seven-tenths of one percent) of African Americans will commit a violent crime against a white person in a given year, and fewer than 0.3 (three-tenths of one percent) of whites will be victimized by a black person in a given year;

* Whites are 6 times as likely to be murdered by another white person as by a black person; and overall, the percentage of white Americans who will be murdered by a black offender in a given year is only 2/10,000ths of 1 percent (0.0002).

Why do you suppose this was brought to a thread about Leslie Jones and the Academy Awards?

Thanks R132 You stated a mouthful.

America has nothing but blood on its hands, and white American society has much to answer for. Eventhough they believe they've done wrong.

by Anonymousreply 135February 11, 2020 1:22 AM

R126 You've just confirmed the exact reason why black people view white people with cynicism and why they are not largely trusted by black people.

You've just confirmed everything we already knew to be true about white people and white society.

But no worries, the same thing is thought and felt about whites in black America as well.

And with good reason.

by Anonymousreply 136February 11, 2020 1:26 AM

She's an idiot for saying that, why out herself other than for the attention of being controversial. Also why doesn't she have any regard for women who are writing, producing, etc. Stupid to self alienate in such a way, she is a black woman and as such should be just as vested in forwarding the careers of women and more black actors, directors etc. But way to shoot yourself in the foot while cutting off ones nose to spite her face.

On another note, while I dont agree with her ideology of who does/doesn't merrit 'her' vote, I can't help but think of all of the old fogies who refused to watch BBM, and were vocally nonplussed about it, or have acted in one way or another to favor demographics. This show has been cited as a 'popularity' contest. For years its been a standing joke that members vote for specific reasons, not always with the best of films in mind, so to get all indignant about someone stating their line in the sand is also contrary.

Saw she's the guest judge on Project Runway, and now have to wonder whose work she's going to favor.

by Anonymousreply 139February 11, 2020 1:31 AM

She must have hit a damn nerve with what she said. Because the responses on this thread from a bunch of old ass ancient racist white saggy mushy queens spells out, "she got to you."

You can say whatever you want about her looks. She's still the one in showbiz making big $$ and constantly being gossiped about by a bunch of ancient white queens who never experienced glory in life in the first fucking place.

So stay mad.

by Anonymousreply 140February 11, 2020 1:45 AM

Leslie Jones is a datalouge trigger. She is almost everything that they hate, a dark skinned successful black woman. That absolutely infuriates white males who have failed at life. How dare she succeed with all of those strikes against her. She beat the system that was designed to relegate her to permanent second class citizenship.

by Anonymousreply 147February 11, 2020 2:53 AM

R147 When in doubt, always invoke affirmative action and welfare queens. Those old tired tropes are the only lines people with your mindset can think to come up with.

Thank for exposing yourself, yet again.

by Anonymousreply 148February 11, 2020 3:02 AM

I have no doubt. The plethora of mediocre and zero-talent blacks in entertainment these days is solely due to handouts.

Oh no, some black queens are upset because non-blacks (but other "POCs") are calling this untalented, racist cunt out on her shit.

she has a PATTERN of crying "racism!" and then never backing it up.

and now she just said outright she won't vote for anyone based on race. That is the actual DEFINITION of racism.

she just is adding fuel to the fire and being the ultimate stereotype of a DUMB, LOUD ANGRY NEGRESS.

But yeah, keep defending her.

by Anonymousreply 151February 11, 2020 3:27 AM

R140 Like I said, black people back each other up, no matter what. How can anyone with a discerning mind and common sense think that what she said was right or okay?

by Anonymousreply 152February 11, 2020 3:35 AM
I'm very liberal but I'm tired of this underrepresented shit.

No kidding! Blacks are not even the biggest minority anymore, and they're waaay over-represented in the media. Almost every commercial on TV is black people. Or leading roles in films. Since 2001, they've also been nominated almost every single year and won many times, too. Still, they raise a stink if they don't somehow make it one year. Meanwhile, Latinos and Asians are far behind. White far-leftists liberals, who now run Hollywood, have white guilt and a white savior complex and still think we live in pre-'60s America.

by Anonymousreply 153February 11, 2020 3:42 AM

R152 Actually, whites are the ones that have historically always backed each other up.

Systemic racism is a collaboration between whites.

Don't ever forget that.

by Anonymousreply 154February 11, 2020 4:14 AM

R153 Get in line and wait your turn.

by Anonymousreply 155February 11, 2020 4:16 AM

Tina Louise is a longtime Academy voter. Other than Stepford Wives and some Italian exploitation movies, I don’t think her Gilligans Island credit qualifies her. Yet she doesn’t miss a vote and goes to the parties.

by Anonymousreply 156February 11, 2020 4:19 AM

R131 "[R126] I am white and NEVER say racist shit. And I don’t surround myself with racists.

Maybe it is just YOU."

Not really. Half or more of my friends are Black. The others I mention talk just in the same terms as those on the DL which, let's face it, contains some racism but it's not of the hateful, odious kind. Some of it is in jest, some out of ignorance and some out of frustration for not being able to say this when they're not on the DL. And because I have a lot of Black friends, I hear them obsess openly with "the White man", "White provilege" and other things that, if said in reverse, would start another fire in LA.

by Anonymousreply 157February 11, 2020 7:24 AM

I mean... are we really surprised? With the trash the Oscars has been letting in over the years I'm sure there are hundreds of Academy voters just like her. But what I don't get is why anybody cares. The Oscars don't mean anything, and the deserving films never win, so why do you care if some illiterate, untalented bitch only votes for other black people? I'm sure Lily Singh will do the same thing in a few years when she becomes an Academy voter, as will Billy Porter. Don't concern yourself with the opinions of trash, especially when those opinions center around a rigged awards show.

by Anonymousreply 158February 11, 2020 7:32 AM

It should be emphasized nearly all the of those victims .were other blacks. Blacks need police protection more than any other group in America.

I see Chicago this year had 54 murders so far. Of those 33 victims were blacks and 17 more were Hispanic.

Leslie was obviously admitted to the Academy in an affirmative action move to give blacks greater influence there.

How odd that someone who claims to be “Latino” does not know that Latino is not a race. Latinos = both blacks and whites.

From beginning to end your post is equally nonsensical. And as I already pointed out. White supremacist becoming incredibly concerned about Asians and Latinos only when they believe they can’t pit them against non Hispanic black people. Now you can go back over to the other Oscar thread and continue complaining about Koreans.
