FINALLY! A return to traditional, classical architecture in Federal Building.

Enough of this so-called "modern" style polluting our city-scapes. This is a triumph for traditional American values.

Harumph!

I wouldn't be surprised. And screw energy efficiency and LEED certification. Wouldn't be surprised if they added gas lamps for effect.

It wont be done well and will end up looking cheap.

by Anonymousreply 2February 7, 2020 7:42 PM

Are you talking buildings, or Melania, r2?

by Anonymousreply 3February 7, 2020 7:44 PM

Robert A.M. Stern must be jumping for joy.

by Anonymousreply 4February 7, 2020 7:50 PM

In his grave, yes, R4. Lame buildings at Yale barf.

by Anonymousreply 5February 7, 2020 7:51 PM

His stuff at Yale is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 6February 7, 2020 7:56 PM

Thank goodness! I’m sick of all this ugly sterile modern shit that all looks the same.

by Anonymousreply 7February 7, 2020 7:59 PM

Architectural brutalism is a fad. There is a reason traditional, classical architecture has endured for 2500 years.

I'd love for government buildings to be more beautiful, but it's fucking Trump. He'll fuck this up with thin slices of marble or some other crappy building technique he's developed.

Triumph of the Won't

by Anonymousreply 10February 7, 2020 10:23 PM

Ah yes....the classical elegance of Trump Tower. Gilded knock-off faux French furniture.

OP, you may like the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville - it was only built in 2003 and looks as good as anything Victorian.

Where's Albert Speer when we need him? The right man for the new Republican Reich.

One hopes that with this edict, we shall soon see shining examples of classic architecture such as the Chicago Public Library.

Lots of it.

Lots. Of. It.

"But we want to make hideously provocative architectural statements that will challenge people's aesthetic sensibilities and elevate our status among architectural intellectuals!"

Ooh, that's pretty r17.

by Anonymousreply 18February 8, 2020 2:17 AM

R12 - that Schermerhorn Symphony building looks like a post office. Massive fail.

R2 has it right. It's expensive to build those buildings with the same standards today. Inevitably, there will be 'nods' to Federalist architecture but it will just look cheap and tacky.

Haha, R18. No, it is the Palace of the Soviets. They demolished the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and began building it in the 1930's. Then WWII came along and construction was suspended and the steel was repurposed for the war effort. After the war, the government restarted construction but realized that the location was too close to the Moscow River and would the ground would not support such a large building. So they cleared out the foundation and made the world's largest outdoor swimming pool.

I swam there many times in the 1980's. After the fall of the USSR, the church was given back the land and started raising money to rebuild the cathedral. It opened sometime in the early 2000's. This is what the new cathedral looks like:
