Post pics of your favorite rooms in your home. I'm curious to see how us gays decorate. I'll start - this is my livingroom/ dining room. The bricks were painted when I moved in, one day I'll strip the paint and make them natural again, but for now I'm too lazy. Also, this tile has to go, I'm looking at the ceramic tile that looks like wood. Easy to care for!
Your plants look good, OP. May I ask what the orientation/ exposure of that room is, and what region you're in?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 2, 2020 6:59 PM |
My condo is North / South oriented. I was facing South when I took the picture. I'm in Arizona.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 2, 2020 7:03 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 2, 2020 7:16 PM |
Sorry, I'd have to clean it up.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 2, 2020 7:20 PM |
R4 what would you suggest? I'm always open to change. The plants are the only thing I won't budge on
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 2, 2020 7:21 PM |
Why do you have a blanket on the coffee table-ish thingy
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 2, 2020 7:24 PM |
I like it Op,but those brown rugs are hideous . As is the ottoman coffee table. Oh , and the eye chart. On second thought , I dont think I like it at all . Sorry .
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 2, 2020 7:30 PM |
Why is your chair filled with huge orange pillows?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 2, 2020 7:33 PM |
Too many prants.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 2, 2020 7:35 PM |
I like it very much, OP. Very cozy.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 2, 2020 7:36 PM |
You have orange, brown and avocado green. Oh My.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 2, 2020 7:39 PM |
Not your fault op but that white tile floor is hideous. Replacing with a different tile would do wonders. Perhaps a Spanish style tile in a vivid color?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 2, 2020 7:45 PM |
Sorry just noticed you mentioned tile in your post. But for the love of God is don't do wood! It does not match desert surroundings in any way shape or form
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 2, 2020 7:47 PM |
I like it. Nice colors of wall and couch. Though I’m not a tile floor person, I know it’s big in some parts of the country. The new houses here all have tile floors. Being from the North, I love wood floors.

Are you posting from1972 OP ?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 2, 2020 7:49 PM |
OP, are you poor?

OP those are decorative fruit right? We know you ain't eating anything healthy in that abode.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 2, 2020 7:54 PM |
R19 Ha! No they are real. I always put lemon in my water and banana in my cereal. The lemon is good for the skin.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 2, 2020 7:58 PM |
The pillows on the chair are actually a peachy pink color, not orange. I enjoy clashing colors and patterns. I've been knows to wear patterned suits with striped shirts and polka dot ties. And one can never have too many plants
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 2, 2020 8:00 PM |
Should I post a a picture of my home here, I would end up as a very special episode of "Hoarders".
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 2, 2020 8:06 PM |
Can I live with you OP? I am 29 and can be a good house boy, I also cook!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 2, 2020 8:06 PM |
I like the plants. I'd lose all those circular patterned items, including the lampshade and some of the textiles. Wearing patterns is one thing, living with several of them in a narrow space is another.
BUT no one spends as much time there are you and if you love it, who cares. I'll take something unique although not exactly to my taste any day over the same old predictable safe choices.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 2, 2020 8:10 PM |
R23 If you're cute and can have a hot meal ready when I get home from work, I'd consider it 😀 I usually go for older guys but I can make an exception...

Come on critics, let's see how your place looks!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 2, 2020 8:12 PM |
R24 admittedly that IKEA lamp is a tragedy, I don't know why I haven't replaced it. But it's practical and the light is more flattering than the overhead lamps. I'm looking for one of those spotlight lamps to put in its place.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 2, 2020 8:13 PM |
R27 Thank you!!! That was the whole point of this. Not just criticizing my choices
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 2, 2020 8:14 PM |
R24 besides the lamp, what other circular patterns are you referring to?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 2, 2020 8:15 PM |

OP i quite like your place!!! It looks very comfortable and cozy. And I love the furniture. You have very good taste.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 2, 2020 9:46 PM |
I'm going to regret this, I know, but...here's 3/4 of my living room area. (I have since replaced the throw pillow on the chair. But not the cat.)
I like mid-century style. And gray. Come at me, tasteless whores!
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 2, 2020 9:48 PM |
R40 I need that fan in my life, adorable!! I love your place, very unfussy yet comfortable. Thanks for sharing!! I really like the bookcase
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 2, 2020 9:51 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 2, 2020 9:53 PM |
R51 & R52 Thank you. Maybe gray is overused, but I honestly never see it in anyone else's real-life homes. I like how it makes the colors pop.
Oh and my partner made the bookcase, I'll pass on your compliments.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 2, 2020 10:01 PM |
R58 what is that in the corner, a lamp of some sort?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 2, 2020 10:02 PM |

OP, I admire your commitment to earth tones.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 2, 2020 10:12 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 82 | February 2, 2020 10:44 PM |
R79 Nope, the version I heard says that a horseshoe turned upward will bring you luck and prosperity but if it's hanging downward it will keep you safe from dark magic (people used to believe that witches can't pass under horseshoes pointing downward so they put them up over the doors of their barns).
Looks like I need protection from you witches more than I need $$$.

R75 I like your living room, but I think the bedroom is a little claustrophobic. The colors are nice but I really think your ceilings are too low for a canopy bed. And I would constantly be tripping over that chair and/or the chest in the middle of the night. I mean this as constructive criticism only; do as you will.
R90 you've made me all verklempt.

R97 there like 3 feet between the wall and the chest, never tripped once. Its actually a ww2 army footlocker given to me by an elderly neighbor when I was a child. It's so old, but very cherished. I'm almost 7 feet tall and the ceilings are a good 2 to 3 feet taller than me, so the pic is a little deceiving.

R112, walls are not furniture support structures and vice versa - furniture need not go against every wall. Nice that you have a dance/yoga/fucking area in the middle but consider actually using your furniture to have a sitting area where you aren't necessarily shouting across the room.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | February 2, 2020 11:47 PM |
R112. Your place is very clean and orderly. I think you are very into symmetry. I see you like round clock like wall decorations. I think you should reconsider the 2 sunface wall decorations. Add 2 different - somethings - not round, and not identical, to introduce some balance. You might also consider having one sofa upholstered in a different color. The next time you buy statement candlesticks, get them in different sizes. See what I mean?

[quote] The mirror reflecting the bed is bad mojo
How do you have a mirror in a bedroom that doesn't reflect the bed? There is a dresser with an attached mirror opposite the bed (not pictured) so there are actually two mirrors reflecting the bed, I guess they cancel each other out because my mojo is just fine.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | February 3, 2020 12:07 AM |
Mirrors are for girls.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | February 3, 2020 12:11 AM |
why do you need a mirror in your bedroom?
Feng Shui is one hocus-pocus "system" that warns against mirrors. There are others! If your mojo is fine and this isn't your bag, then there's no problem. There are solutions for avoiding mirrors - but you are not interested.
Relocate Mirrors According to feng shui, if you aren't sleeping well, a mirror in your bedroom could be the culprit. Mirrors are thought to bounce energy around the bedroom, which may result in restlessness and amplify worries.
It's especially important not to hang a mirror on the wall opposite your bed. Feng shui consultants say this can promote the intrusion of a third party into a couple's relationship and possibly encourage infidelity.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | February 3, 2020 12:12 AM |

[quote] smoking den vibe
My bf and I smoked so much (this was 30 years ago) that the ceiling in my small apt went orange and shiny with nicotine; we were in Europe so no one thought that was odd when they came for supper or for whatever. We had an open coal fire which drew well so did not add to the smoke staining at all (I had a chimney sweep on a regular basis).

OP the curtains look a little old fashioned and the white tile is dated, but the rest is nice.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | February 3, 2020 1:18 AM |
R169 Most people who say that usually are just too fussy with plants, which kills them. I water mine maybe once a month with a tiny sprinkle here and there if I see drooping and I mist daily. That's about it other than my yearly spring time fertilizing. For the most part plants just want to be left alone. I rarely prune or do much else to mine

R170 Thanks! Like I said in the original post, the tile has got to go and I'm looking at the ceramic tile that looks like wood. The curtains are sheers with a branch pattern on the dark outer panels, they look better and more detailed in person. I used to have other curtains up... I may switch them back out for fun
by Anonymous | reply 173 | February 3, 2020 1:20 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 179 | February 3, 2020 1:25 AM |

So some of you complained about my obsession with symmetry, so I rearranged back to an arrangement that I had previously, that I liked better except it was not as functional. There is only one way to get in and out of the living room with this arrangement and the chairs best for watching TV are off to the side, not direct view of TV. Actually this room doesn't get used much, I spend most the time in my study.
Click on photo and cursor down for old arrangement or see R112, which do you like better?

by Anonymous | reply 199 | February 3, 2020 2:35 AM |
R185, I know you got that photo off the internet as a before and after but if you will notice the grout line in the before photo goes under the toilet, but in the after photo it goes in front of the toilet. The tiles even look larger in the after photo. So unless they are also painting new grout lines which makes no sense, that isn't real.
If they are painting new grout lines that would be a huge pain to do.

R112, your house looks nice, clean, and comfortable. I prefer symmetry to asymmetry. Your dining table is actually in a diagonal position, so there's that. I thought the star over the bed meant that you were a Dallas Cowboys fan.
Unless you have large rooms, most of your furniture is better-placed close to the walls.

by Anonymous | reply 240 | February 3, 2020 5:24 AM |
OP, I love your huge ottoman.
You said you won't budge on the plants. I do think that the plants add to the cluttered look, though. At the very least, I'd get rid (or move) everything between the door and the white shelf with the Buddha heads on top. (It looks like the door opens into the room, so it looks like it may even be impeding egress / ingress.)
I would also put the larger framed pictures (same wall as the white shelf, behind the plants) somewhere else. The small framed pictures on the bottom shelf (white unit) look out of place down there. The little bins (on the bottom shelf) look like something that should go into a bedroom.
You seem like you are open to suggestions, OP, so those were mine. Thank you for sharing your house.

R253 I love your television. As a matter of fact, I have been looking around for an old console television like that. I plan to replace the guts with a modern flat screen, but retain the wood cabinet. I have a huge console stereo radio in my living room already. Other than that, most of you would run from my house. I inherited it years ago, and never got around to doing much. Still throwing stuff out from my parents, lots of my stuff still in boxes. OP, I think it looks really nice and welcoming in the first photo, but the second makes things feel cramped rather than cozy. Maybe if the foilage against the yellow wall could be moved to a tiered shelf beside the couch so it doesn’t feel as if it’s looming over the whole room?
R50, you won’t hear me slamming you. My own taste runs a bit more colorful but I think everything in your room goes well together and it looks like the result of a cohesive vision.
R53, I love it! I believe hardwood floors should be covered as little as possible, but other than that I wouldn’t change a thing.
R59, at least it looks like the old lady was once a Parisian shopkeeper rather than a farmer’s wife in one of the rectangular states? I think it’s cute.

R279 Because of the light requirements for some of my plants I don't have many placement options. Those plants specifically need bright light and that's the brightest area in my home, so I have to make do. I'm just ridiculous when it comes to buying plants , there are more in my bedroom and kitchen as well. At this point the only other choice would be to start hanging plants but even I think that may be too much

Should I keep this water feature in my entryway? I think it makes a big statement, but does it distract from the simplicity of my nice, open entry?

[quote] Unsurprisingly this entire thread looks like a home tour of The Condos at Boca Del Lago Vista, Phase 4
Phase 6. Get it right. Actually, I am enjoying all these photos.
R285, I like your room. People are sensitive about their books, but I think the books are overpowering the space. It looks like an office.
I would definitely get rid of the overhead lighting. It’s plain unflattering.
I don’t think you need color, color, color, but even some light neutrals would improve the feeling.

[quote] I am so jealous of your natural brick and arched windows!! Does that globe open into a liquor cabinet? Your place is so charming! Thank you for the compliments!
It does! I had a choice of four units in the building, but those arched windows were what sold me on this particular one.
[quote] Because of the light requirements for some of my plants I don’t have many placement options. Those plants specifically need bright light and that’s the brightest area in my home, so I have to make do.
What I was suggesting was stacking them one above another on a ladder bookcase in that back corner beside the window, so they’d get plenty of light. I've attached a photo of what I'm thinking below.
R285, you have a number of nice pieces. Maybe you could add some brighter color with a rug matching those throw pillows, and a brighter paint color on the walls like a buttery yellow or light green. I’d also recommend a lower cabinet/stand for the TV rather than a full entertainment center to show more wall, and staining the lighter bookcases black or espresso to match the darker furniture.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | February 4, 2020 4:49 AM |
OP-- If you like the rug size, fine, but maybe go for a lighter color?
I think that your room looks cozy, I like the colors--- and I have a lot of plants, too. I also hang them from the ceiling to give a vertical focal point, like flowering vines. Maybe buy some more plants!
Thank you for posting the pic.

R279 Your place has great bones. And I love your papa-san chair; I used to have one ages ago and now I miss it. (I also can't believe that the cat isn't sitting in it.)
R285 Seconding that you need to seriously cull some books and find a lighter, more open bookcase.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | February 4, 2020 12:23 PM |
R285, it's your house and it's your life, but I must agree with those who are telling you to scale way back on the books.
A couple years ago, I got rid of a thousand books. I consulted DL first as I was on the fence, but now I'm glad I did it. I kept some that I perceived myself to actually use and/or have sentimental value and was still left with 50-100 and I bet of those I have maybe looked at just 5 or 10 since the purge.
I'd get rid of them or all but six feet total of them, paint the walls white and invest in one or three BIG statement plants, not the little ones like in OP (no offense OP, going for scale here). It will probably change your life.
Whomever lived in this house before me painted the living room like a sewage green on one wall, gangrene green on another wall, and that 2005 beige (rental beige?) on anothrr wall. I have very high ceilings and I didn't want to pay a thousand dollars to have it painted and I was afraid to paint it myself, so I lived with it for YEARS. Last summer I had it up to fucking here and Sherwin Williams was offering free consultations (reg $30 and they give you big coupons on paint). I figured why the fuck not.
Ultimately, I painted it (a white-type color, but not white-white) all MYSELF, and it wasn't that hard. It changed my life. I'm not kidding when I say I feel ten years younger now that my living room isn't Hobby Lobby piss elegant dramarama.
Spend a lot more time in there now.

R292 That is such a good idea, why did I never think of that. One stand to hold multiple plants. I love redoing old furniture. I need to start looking around for something
by Anonymous | reply 297 | February 4, 2020 5:24 PM |
I don't think R285 necessarily needs to get rid of the books so much as consolidate then into one large, preferably open, bookcase. I color coordinated my books, something I used to think was stupid, and found that it looks much more organized that way. But I like your place overall. I would look to relocate the office area in another space also
by Anonymous | reply 298 | February 4, 2020 5:27 PM |
T281: No, but looks very realistic in person. It’s weird, but it’s the one thing people are intrigued with and not the vintage Japanese planter that holds it.

by Anonymous | reply 301 | February 4, 2020 6:27 PM |
I still like R285 's wall unit, but perhaps he doesn't need the other two bookcases on the other wall, which could be freed up for art.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | February 4, 2020 7:41 PM |
Meant add re R285, overall I like the masculine vibe. It's a strong statement.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | February 4, 2020 7:43 PM |
OP, I know you said everything except the plants is up for grabs, so of course the one thing I'm going to comment on about your otherwise gorgeous living room is your plant situation. I have done thousands of plantscapes over the years and just have to say less is more. As an exercise, consider removing all the plants except the Bird of Paradise. It will look more like a focal piece as opposed to a jungle. You're in Arizona, can any of them go out on your lanai? Don't get into the trap that every plant is sacred, they're just not.
I truly appreciate that you love them and they're your babies. But just as you don't keep cut floral arrangements forever, you're not required to keep poinsettias from 3 Christmases ago or blown out orchids. Or Ficus trees with 17 leaves.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | February 4, 2020 8:29 PM |
R304 I have tried keeping them outside, but they either die from frost in the winter or turn black from scorch in the summer. They truly do mean something to me, some were gifts others were grown from see or I've had since I was a teenager or brought from the brink of death... I just can't imagine parting with them. But I also know that I'm at my limit and can't add any more.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | February 4, 2020 8:47 PM |
If they make you happy, R305, keep 'em. You don't have to please anybody but yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | February 4, 2020 8:49 PM |
Why not put the plants in your conservatory and visit them at tea?
by Anonymous | reply 307 | February 4, 2020 8:52 PM |
OP There seems to be a prettyish kind of a little wilderness on one side of your sofa.
by Anonymous | reply 308 | February 4, 2020 9:06 PM |
i am about to move, and have these kinds of problems to deal with. any ideas?
for one, I have no idea what is under the wall-to-wall carpets. it should be wood, given era of the house, but who knows what condition it is in.
another: baseboard heaters around 2/3 the perimeter of every room, painted to match the wood trim (which is NOT white, and is a different color in every room).
hospital tile in the entry, kitchen and bath. not even the sense to lay it diagonally either. 9-
those small, old style acoustic tiles on the ceilings. praying that they are not asbestos. wondering if i can cover them over with wallpaper or something. not decorative wallpaper, but maybe totally plain so i can paint over it.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | February 4, 2020 9:06 PM |
R309 - Only major problem Is the “acoustic” ceiling tile.
Carpet - if not wood underneath, nice replacement WW carpeting is fine.
Baseboard heater - simple white spray paint for heaters. One day.
Hospital tile. I would replace with new tile/wood but also not the worst thing in the world - especially if white. Cover with some area rugs.
Get rid of the ceiling tile - nothing can be done to redeem it and it is likely unsafe in itself as well as hiding mold, dust and other nasty things underneath. Positive is that you can hopefully get another foot of ceiling height.

[quote] And I love your papa-san chair; I used to have one ages ago and now I miss it. (I also can’t believe that the cat isn’t sitting in it.)
Oh, my girl cat treats it like a nest (which reminds me I need to break out the Dustbuster and lint roller before anyone drops by), but my tom in the picture likes perching on the sofa arm or napping in his mini-hammock.
by Anonymous | reply 311 | February 4, 2020 11:47 PM |
those acoustic tiles look to be glued up there. no getting them down without replastering the ceilings, which is definitely not likely to happen in the short term.
whatever were they thinking?
by Anonymous | reply 312 | February 5, 2020 12:06 AM |
I'd like to update to wood laminate floors but George won't let me change a thing.

R312 why not get some of those tin ceiling panels to cover them ? They sell plastic ones that look like the real deal.

Insult to injury. The effect of an "old-timey" country store in Waco, Texas crossed with a Romanian whore house.

R318 I think if done right with the right pattern it could be a great solution. Something muted and understated that fully covers the sound tiles. Because those acoustic tiles are heinous!!! Right up there with popcorn ceilings, possibly worse. No offense R312! Do you have a pic so we can see what they look like in your space? I was think paint could be a short term solution to spruce it up a little but that may just draw more attention to then if done incorrectly.

I'm shocked so few have the balls to show their space! Especially considering how braggadocious some posters are about their impeccable style and career/finances.
However, those that did share are awesome and have great homes. I'm also surprised by the decor we've seen, as cliche as it is, I'll admit I was expecting "gayer" whatever the fuck that means. I guess more feminine?!?!
R53 is my overall favorite. Obviously an upscale building, the home of a person of means - yet it's approachable, informal and livable! Plus the mix of styles is great. Great job! What state are you in if I may ask?

i have no pics that i would want to share. we are in process of buying a tiny house in a tiny town that we can afford, and plan to live there long term. it is a lifelong dream for us, finally coming true. but it will never be Sunset magazine. just a normal house on a normal street. wood shingles, 180degree turn staircase, one little built-in china cupboard.
it seems that they remodelled in the 60s/70s, and then never again. but nearly all of the homes we looked at had those strange tiles on the ceilings, or even worse---the dropped, faux office track style ceilings. i guess plastering and sheetrock were simply out of reach to this class of poor people, and has been for the last 40+ years.
my plan is to caulk the seems and put liner paper up, then paint them. if we ever do major remodeling, we might take them out but this will have to do for now.
my dream is to have grasscloth walls, cork floors and sisal rugs. i love design elements with texture. these rooms may be too small to carry that kind of thing off. they even lack crown molding.
by Anonymous | reply 331 | February 12, 2020 3:07 AM |
R331 I think Grasscloth Wallpaper is better in smaller rooms personally. In larger rooms it looks like an office building waiting room.

R331 can't even fit uppercase letters into his post his house is so tiny.

Hi OP, curious to see if/how your place has changed this past year and a half. Did you finally exchange that hideous, bathroom like tile floor, with something more fun and colorful? I also hope you returned the eye chart to your optometrist, and replaced it with a nice sunset painting or a painting of a hot naked man.
