It's winter
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 2, 2020 1:23 AM |
I don't know where you live, but isn't it a little cold for a picnic?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 2, 2020 1:23 AM |
Orzo salad.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 2, 2020 1:24 AM |
Cold meatloaf sandwiches.
Potato salad, homemade, please.
Splurge on some really good tomatoes that suggest it's the height of the summer tomato season. Make a simple salad with them, and have a few slices for your sandwiches.
Iced tea or lemonade.
Dessert? Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla icing, or perhaps the reverse. Lemon coconut wouldn't go amiss.

yellowjackets like sweet things and meat.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 2, 2020 2:31 AM |
r21 I agree. Save those large slabs of meat for the boudoir.

A good picnic is a drive thru with my bf at Sonic, IMO.

Nice photo choice, OP.

seb & chaz - they never did any sex though, did they? The book and movie are both ambiguous talking about sins which were high in the catalog of sins but that could mean of the 7 deadly sins. I saw it again the other day and seb and chaz aren't very good looking by today's standards, alas.

I'd probably end up with a jughead who whines, a loafer named Brad, and a thousand mosquito bites.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 2, 2020 4:13 AM |
A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter!

I like to make little Caprese kebab/skewers with grape tomatoes and fresh mozzarella balls, interspersed with fresh basil leaves. Picnics are for finger food – Deviled eggs, finger sandwiches, cheese and crackers, olives, pickles. Be sure to pack mustard, chutney, etc.
I agree with [R21] that desserts aren't needed on a picnic. Focus instead on having both hot and cold drinks –A thermos of hot tea and one of cold lemonade or similar. Wine is optional, but chilled champagne is nice. I do make a dessert for when we get home -Something gooey and rich to contrast with the picnic foods.
It was 85 degrees and sunny here today. Perfect for an outing.

r35 Throw in some raisins and eggs and.....
Dare I say it?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 2, 2020 4:30 AM |
Dining in the great outdoors doesn't have to mean roughing it, you can eat exquisitely when you pack your basket with some of Martha's favorite picnic foods.

Is discussing outfits and decoration an option?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 2, 2020 10:21 AM |
Chicken salad wraps. I like to use the spinach tortilla wraps for them, and add grapes and some type of nut like slivered almonds or chopped walnuts. White wine, lemonade, or iced tea to go with it.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 2, 2020 11:14 AM |
Bread, cheese, cured meats and fruit. No gross potato salad please.

Fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, deviled eggs, chocolate cake, iced tea, lemonade. The cucumber and tomato salad mentioned before would be a good addition, too.
