DLers, what is perfect picnic food?

An easy tomato and cucumber salad.

Simple sandwiches.

McDonalds.

Caviar

Wine.

Fried chicken, potato salad and Hawaiian rolls. But fresh made, not from the deli.

I don't know where you live, but isn't it a little cold for a picnic?

Orzo salad.

Cold meatloaf sandwiches.

Potato salad, homemade, please.

Splurge on some really good tomatoes that suggest it's the height of the summer tomato season. Make a simple salad with them, and have a few slices for your sandwiches.

Iced tea or lemonade.

Dessert? Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla icing, or perhaps the reverse. Lemon coconut wouldn't go amiss.

i tend not to take desserts on picnics. it attracts insects as rapidly as large slabs of meat.

I like to make little Caprese kebab/skewers with grape tomatoes and fresh mozzarella balls, interspersed with fresh basil leaves. Picnics are for finger food – Deviled eggs, finger sandwiches, cheese and crackers, olives, pickles. Be sure to pack mustard, chutney, etc.

I agree with [R21] that desserts aren't needed on a picnic. Focus instead on having both hot and cold drinks –A thermos of hot tea and one of cold lemonade or similar. Wine is optional, but chilled champagne is nice. I do make a dessert for when we get home -Something gooey and rich to contrast with the picnic foods.

Chicken salad wraps. I like to use the spinach tortilla wraps for them, and add grapes and some type of nut like slivered almonds or chopped walnuts. White wine, lemonade, or iced tea to go with it.

Bread, cheese, cured meats and fruit. No gross potato salad please.
