So his very promising career has been derailed because 10 years ago he friended and eventually exchanged nudes with an 18 year old on Facebook? I hope there's more to it than the front page of that article makes out, he certainly wasn't in any position of power as a 22 year old corps member.

by Anonymousreply 16January 30, 2020 12:56 AM

I feel so sorry for the Royal Family. First Andrew, then Harry, and now this! Where does he stand in the line of succession, before or after Dame Elton John?

London Times, January 30, 2020

"The Royal Ballet’s star choreographer has been suspended amid claims of sexual misconduct with students in the worst crisis to hit the company for a generation, The Times can reveal. Liam Scarlett, 33, who was made the Royal Ballet’s artist-in-residence after a meteoric rise, is understood to have been banned from Covent Garden pending an inquiry. Independent investigators are examining claims that he behaved inappropriately with Royal Ballet School students and encouraged them to send him naked photographs.

The employment firm Linda Harvey Associates was brought in by the Royal Ballet last August after staff expressed concerns. The inquiry has not concluded and it is understood that no findings have been made against Scarlett. The revelation will overshadow the ballet’s forthcoming sellout revival of its signature show, Swan Lake, which is to be performed in March with Scarlett’s choreography. Rehearsals for Oklahoma, which Scarlett was to choreograph, were postponed in August, at about the time the complaints are thought to have been made. The company blamed a scheduling conflict.

It is understood that the inquiry has received allegations from dancers and former dancers relating to Scarlett’s alleged behaviour over a ten-year period. The Times has spoken to a former student at the Royal Ballet School, a feeder for the main company, who alleges that Scarlett befriended him on Facebook before coaxing him into sending an intimate photograph. He was 18 at the time. The former student alleges that Scarlett had shared sexual messages with about ten of the male students on Facebook. He said: “As a dancer you are trained to say ‘yes’ to everything. Because it’s so competitive you can’t lose an opportunity, so when someone with a lot of power asks you to do something you are pre-programmed to do it. “I’m speaking out because he should not be allowed to continue working with students.”

The former student alleges that Scarlett would comment on students’ genitalia, touch their backsides and would walk in on them while they were changing.

The Times understands that the inquiry has been told about other students who received sexual messages. A dancer told the inquiry it was perceived that young performers who did not complain about his advances were rewarded with parts in preference to more experienced members of the company, or that parts were offered to keep them quiet about his behaviour. Graduates of the Royal Ballet School audition for a permanent place in the company and students sometimes star in its performances. Scarlett is not a teacher but choreographed works for the students to perform.

The inquiry is also understood to have been told that Scarlett bullied dancers in the main company and “seemed to enjoy people fearing him”. A dancer told The Times: “He is the goose that lays the golden egg. People buy tickets because of his choreography. Everyone has been too scared to speak.”

A feeder? Is that Brit speak for a top?

London Times, January 30, 2020 Continued

"A former dancer said that Scarlett would berate company staff and once threw a prop at a performer. This newspaper has been told that star dancers withdrew from a recent production because they did not enjoy working with him A source is also understood to have alleged to the inquiry that Scarlett took cocaine with the dancers. Scarlett attended the school himself before graduating to the company in 2005. The role of artist-in-residence was created for him in 2012, when he became at 26 the youngest choreographer to be commissioned to create a three-act ballet for the Royal Ballet — Frankenstein.

A dancer said: “We are so confused — we are going to be rehearsing Swan Lake soon and the choreographer is not even allowed on site. It is an absolute scandal.”

The Royal Opera House received £24.7 million last year from the government, through the Arts Council England, to fund the Royal Ballet and Opera. In 2018 Kevin O’Hare, director of the Royal Ballet, said: “We had issues with one guest coming in recently who was behaving in ways that we aren’t used to any more. In the old days, we might have tried to smooth it over. Now, we say, ‘This isn’t going to happen’. Even if it’s a great choreographer we say, no, they have to go.” The claims about Scarlett come after a scandal that led to the departure of Peter Martins, the artistic director of New York City Ballet.

A spokesman for the Royal Opera House said: “We were made aware of allegations relating to Liam Scarlett in August 2019. The individual was immediately suspended and an independent disciplinary investigation opened. “The Royal Ballet Company has a code of conduct to ensure staff and visiting artists are always supported. As the process is ongoing, and as a duty of care to staff and artists, we are unable to comment further.”

Scarlett has been approached for comment."

And with that, he threw his scarf over his left shoulder and flounced out of the room.

The whole point of being successful and having power is to score booty -- if you can't do that, then why try to succeed?

Are the photos available?

[quote] Scarlett would berate company staff and once threw a prop at a performer.

If you’ve ever directed actors or dancers on stage, you understand this urge and further know that it is completely justifiable. Nothing more annoying than airhead ‘performers’ gawking out into the stalls at you mid-flow of a scene and then breaking to whine “I don't know what to feel...tell me how I should react!”

by Anonymousreply 27January 30, 2020 10:20 AM

R14 ahhhh, ‘Prince of Thieves’. How very.

How can we forget the scene of Costner's Robin laconically sighing to a belligerent blubbering Christian Will Slater Scarlett, “Did I harm you in some former life?" (because English Christian laymen definitely believed in reincarnation....) And how the two dirt-smeared AC-tors have some sort of homoerotic staring contest like they’re about to kiss, until Slater shatters the awkward exchange to attempt wangsting his way into the Golden Globes highlight reel montage of 1992 using what is possibly the dodgiest Brit accent ever heard in cinema. It’s impossible to believe as a Medieval fraternal reconciliation, yet somehow it’s endlessly watchable in all its shiteous glory to this day.

I adore this scene precisely of the earnest tone-deafness and obliviously-sympathetic chemistry misfire. Everything about it that could be wrong, is — and it doesn’t even matter because this is a Costner epic and we’re grateful for the chance to witness Kevin’s ass & pretty explosions. Never will we see its like in theaters again.

by Anonymousreply 29January 30, 2020 11:17 AM

It's amazing how so many people use their position in a corrupt manner for power and to win sexual favors. It happens in all aspects of business, the arts and in life.

by Anonymousreply 30January 30, 2020 11:26 AM

Oh, God, I want him - he's so virile!!! Bitch dancers who got spurned must be jealous and rat him out.

Matthew Rhys could play him in a scandalous biopic dance movie.

And while on the topic of the disgrace of the world of ballet, Have any sex pics of Chase Finlay ever leaked out?

If he was walking in on women, that's an issue. If he was walking in on men changing, there's not a lot you can do unless he was getting grabby.

by Anonymousreply 40January 30, 2020 6:14 PM

Well, unless the area he walked into was private, like an individual stall or changing room. Then it would be pretty creepy.

by Anonymousreply 41January 30, 2020 6:16 PM

There are no women involved in this, I can guarantee you.
