Non-American DLers: What do you think about peanut butter?
by Anonymous | reply 88 | May 29, 2020 4:17 AM |
Disgusting
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 29, 2020 4:57 AM |
I love it. I’m Canadian. I just don’t like all the shitty brands with sugar and other bizarre ingredients. My favourite brand is Adams.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 29, 2020 4:59 AM |
I'm a fan, but it has to be the crunchy stuff; creamy is the work of the Devil.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 29, 2020 5:36 AM |
Much tastier than Vegemite/Marmite/Nutella.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 29, 2020 5:47 AM |
The odd spoonful with crunchy bits is ok.
Wonderful bait for mouse traps.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 29, 2020 5:52 AM |
Love it.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 29, 2020 5:52 AM |
Crunchy peanut butter (with no sweeteners or icky things) on a slice of toast is a perfect quick breakfast. In fact, I ate some this morning.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 29, 2020 5:59 AM |
Love it too. On toast. But smooth only
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 29, 2020 5:59 AM |
If you have some sesame oil on hand you can use peanut butter with a dash of sesame oil as a substitute for tahini if you are making hummus.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 29, 2020 6:03 AM |
I put about 1/4 cup in a microwave safe bowl and zap it for about 45 secs till melted/softened.
Then I slice a banana into to rounds over the bowl. A quick stir to coat, a cup of coffee, some juice and toast and I have a quick, nutritious breakfast.
I prefer the smooth variety for this.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 29, 2020 6:04 AM |
I 😍 love the honey roasted.

Food of the gods.

Did you hear the one about the two peanuts on the subway? One of them was as-salt-ed!!!!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 29, 2020 6:21 AM |
R10 I used banana peanut butter as a topping for my waffles. I could eat it for every meal. Peanut Butter Waffles, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Peanut Butter with chocolate, it also makes a good pasta sauce.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 29, 2020 6:21 AM |
R9 You could also make a good salad dressing out of that

I heard that someone in my building used to smear it on his balls so his Boston Terrier would lick it all off. I never verified this of course but can you imagine?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 29, 2020 6:43 AM |
It's crunched up peanuts. What's the big deal? Not like it's raw fish ovum or something.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 29, 2020 6:45 AM |
Are you talking about real peanut butter, where if it sits long enough the oil rises to the top of the butter and needs to be stirred back in, or are you talking about the peanut flavored soft plastic sold by big corporations in the US labelled as peanut butter?

The Irish people on YouTube don't like peanut butter, and they don't like root beer either. American companies should do a better job of weaning the Irish off of potatoes and assimilating them to crave American style foods.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 29, 2020 6:58 AM |
Do people ever eat it in sandwiches with jelly like they do here?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 29, 2020 7:09 AM |
The crunchy, less sweet, more natural stuff is great. The over sweetened really commercial brands are disgusting. As is Nutella. I don’t have a sweet tooth.
But then, I really like Marmite.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 29, 2020 7:09 AM |
It's not anymore offensive than Nutella, and that's huge in certain parts of Europe.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 29, 2020 7:17 AM |
Only on apples for me. I’d never eat a peanut butter sandwich.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 29, 2020 7:20 AM |
It's vastly superior spread to that Nutella dogshit that Europeans slurp daily.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 29, 2020 7:22 AM |
A culinary atrocity.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 29, 2020 7:24 AM |
Even worse than Nutella. From Belgium, Biscoff spread made from Biscoff biscuits. Gag-inducing sweetness.

I fucking love it but I avoid buying it because it's so high in calories (gotta watch my figah'). But I never quite understood the peanut butter/jelly combination. You hear about that one in American movies all the time so I tried it once but it tasted bloody disgusting. I think PB is perfectly tasty on its own.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 29, 2020 8:11 AM |
It's average, just there like mayonnaise. Which is why I can't understand why Americans go so gaga over it. I'm currently in Italy and I find Italians behave the same with Nutella.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 29, 2020 8:21 AM |
Never ask a Brit about food.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 29, 2020 8:25 AM |
My partner uses it to make a peanut sauce that's delicious, but other than that it's just *meh* with me.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 29, 2020 9:23 AM |
Vom. Still better than Nutella though.
Give me Marmite or a nice sharp marmalade thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 29, 2020 9:30 AM |
Well, I'm American, so I know you didn't ask me. But I highly recommend powdered peanut butter. It makes a great smoothie with a couple of ripe bananas, and is a great way to add protein and flavor to cornmeal flapjacks.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 29, 2020 9:50 AM |
Americans are getting away from the industrial sugar sludge brands. Natural peanut butters are taking up a lot more space on store shelves.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 29, 2020 10:00 AM |
R44 I *need* that. Possibly quite deeply.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 29, 2020 6:31 PM |
First time I had it I was weirded out by the texture, I didn't expect that it would stick inside the mouth like that. I wasn't a fan but it's grown on me. I don't mind it now, but prefer the crunchy type.
Crema Novi remains my favorite spread, ever.

When I am in the states I head to Trader Joe's for Valencia organic salted crunchy and bring back several jars in my checked luggage (Homeland theatre idiots think it is a liquid).
by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 31, 2020 9:23 AM |
Love peanut butter. But mainstream American brands are not what I consider to be peanut butter - they are absolute trash. Texture and taste is really not good.
I only really like Whole Earth Smooth Peanut Butter these days. It's also what I give my dog with his medication as he loves it and it uses sustainable palm oil and has no added sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 31, 2020 10:52 AM |
I love peanut butter, but not any American brands. It should just have peanuts and salt in it, not any weird shit or sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 31, 2020 11:34 AM |
Crunchy peanut butter on celery is one of my favourite snacks.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 31, 2020 12:05 PM |
Don’t they call it “peanut paste” in UK?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 31, 2020 7:34 PM |
I don’t like it with jelly or jam, and I’m not fond of it on bread.
I keep a small jar in the refrigerator so that when I get the occasional craving for it, I can have a small spoonful.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | January 31, 2020 7:43 PM |
Depends where the peanut butter is from. I've tried some brands from Africa which was awful as it was too sweet. I prefer the organic variation they sell in Scandinavia which is less sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 27, 2020 11:22 PM |
I like that many peanut butter companies have gone down a route similar to Nutella which is essentially hazelnut butter with cocoa.
Some companies are making cocoa peanut butter, as well as other similar "flavors."
Also, almond butter and cashew butter are getting more common and getting the same Nutella treatment.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 27, 2020 11:27 PM |
Are other nut "butters" part of national cuisines elsewhere around the world? Cashew butter? Almond butter? Someone in Israel must have been doing that for thousands of years.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 27, 2020 11:31 PM |
Well, hazelnut butter appears to be quite common in other parts of the world.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 27, 2020 11:33 PM |
It’s a daily staple. I eat the kind with no sugar added by the spoonful.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 27, 2020 11:33 PM |
I was going to send roasted Virginia peanuts (Peanut Shop of Williamsburg, my favorite) to German and English cousins, and thought I'd check if that would be okay. We exchange gifts characteristic of our countries, so I've received such treasures as Marmite.) A German cousin who lives in England said please, no, because people in England find peanuts disgusting and thought of peanut "butter" made her feel ill.
(Fine, bitch, I thought, and kept it all for myself!)
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 27, 2020 11:49 PM |
It sometime hits me that peanuts are not actually in the nut family, but is really a legume and it kinda freaks me out -- I'm eating mushed up pea things on bread.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 28, 2020 12:11 AM |
Disgusting. A brown sludge with the consistency of bad constipation, full of aflatoxins, fat, and sugar. I prefer Marmite/Bovril.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 28, 2020 12:20 AM |
sometimes I treat myself to a little bit of uncooked oatmeal mixed with extra chunky peanut butter and a tiny bit of crumbled dried honey. sprinkled with a tiny bit of salt. just eat it like cookie dough
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 28, 2020 12:35 AM |
R46’s comment aged about as well one of the many pre-COVID comments along the lines of “Americans are giving up their cars and suburban lifestyles and moving into the city.”
In late March, peanut butter flew off the shelves so that it was all but unattainable in any form for quite a while … but the first to go were the comfort-food brands we grew up with – sweet, creamy, salty, fatty … mmm. The last to remain were the nasty, dry, “organic”, unsweetened and low-sodium brands.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 28, 2020 12:59 AM |
It's never really taken off in the UK. We're all about Marmite on toast.
If you served a peanut butter and jam sandwich to a child you'd probably be arrested for child abuse.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 28, 2020 1:04 AM |
I make my own peanut butter. It is easy to make and free from added sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 28, 2020 7:47 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 28, 2020 8:46 AM |
As a Brit, peanut butter was difficult to find in the UK when I was young back in the Jurassic, but I loved the idea of it from American comics and shows and assumed I would love the thing itself, as I adored peanuts. Then I tasted some - utterly vile.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 28, 2020 9:04 AM |

Am I they only one who finds the American peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches disgusting?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 28, 2020 9:25 AM |
Love the stuff. My supermarket has their own brand and for some reason, it’s tastier than the national brands.
I also love cookie butter like Biscoff’s.
