I hate Celine's My Heart Will Go On!!

Yes I am piggybacking on the Whitney thread.

But if there ever was an overwrought, overplayed, shitty song, this is it! Torture in hell is listening to this motherfucker over and over again!

WORST. SONG. EVER.

You have not heard “firework” from Katy Perry?

by Anonymousreply 1January 28, 2020 11:48 PM

Disagree, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2January 28, 2020 11:51 PM

Not worst, but top 10.

by Anonymousreply 3January 28, 2020 11:55 PM

When I was ten, this was my favourite song in the world. I'm still fond of it now, although I probably wouldn't like it at all if I only heard it for the first time today.

by Anonymousreply 4January 28, 2020 11:55 PM

It is sappy. The radio really killed it.

by Anonymousreply 5January 28, 2020 11:56 PM

I've been particularly annoyed since I heard Hymn to the Sea and it's a much better tune. I liked all the HWGO playground parodies that went round though. "once more you shit on the floor" used to make me laugh way too much.

Haha.

Supernatural did an entire episode on this subject. The episode was called "My Heart Will Go On," and one of the angels altered history, so that the Titanic would never have sunk, and therefore, that stupid movie would never have been made, and Celine Dion would never be famous. That's how much he hated the song. Rofl.

After he changed history, Celine Dion became a lounge singer in Quebec!

I'm not a Celine Dion fan, but she is a pro.

Let's just be thankful it's her singing it and not Whitney. OMG, could you imagine?

by Anonymousreply 8January 29, 2020 12:08 AM

Celine is far more annoying than Whitney, IMO. A favorite of doctor's waiting rooms all over the world though.

I Will Always Love You has kind of trite lyrics, as much as I like Dolly, but the performance and the sound of it are sophisticated and impressive.

My Heart Will Go On is as corny as it gets, from the melodramatic title to the Irish-ish instrumentation and misty production to the everything-melodrama of the She-Loaf, Celine Dion. I like the song because she does sing the hell out of it and it is so unabashedly sentimental and saccharine that it’s endearing. It’s like the movie Titanic: just an over-the-top, over-acted and ridiculously written melodrama that lots of people enjoy despite its trappings. But I can stand to watch or listen to each about once a decade and no more.

by Anonymousreply 11January 29, 2020 12:26 AM

Celine Dion is harmless. She has a good soul.

1. Celine and instruments

2. Celine, instruments, and movie dialogue

3. Instruments and movie dialogue

4. Instruments

My God. It seems like at least two were played every hour.

by Anonymousreply 18January 29, 2020 2:46 AM

Even Celine must hate this song by now.

by Anonymousreply 19January 29, 2020 4:20 AM

It's over the top and ridiculous, but still somewhat enjoyable. Much like Titanic.

by Anonymousreply 20January 29, 2020 4:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 21January 29, 2020 4:25 AM

There are many stories about Celine on Datalounge. She disliked the song too. The soundtrack version was recorded as demo, as a favor to James Horner. She did it one night, with only Horner on piano. She never expected it to be used in that or any form, as Cameron did not want a pop song over the closing credits of his "masterpiece." Sony pictures had other ideas and voila. They had to build the soundtrack recording around her little late at night demo recording. Celine is a gorgeous vocalist, but she thought the song was kind of a drag too.

She properly recorded the song for her own album after the soundtrack version became a huge hit. Celine tells the story with great goofy charm, as she does most things. Both versions were huge hits.

This truly was the worst song ever--a typical Celine, white-as-white bread song. It's not even very well-liked today (in contrast to Whitney's IWALY). The average American who remembers when the song was popular looks back at it with disdain.

by Anonymousreply 26January 29, 2020 2:15 PM

I hate this song so fucking much I actually boycotted the notion of ever watching Titanic because of it (that and it looked like an insufferable chick flick). Until just recently, that is...I was out of movies to watch so I just bit the bullet and finally gave in. To my surprise this song didn't even play until the end credits! DOH! It truly is a song for fraus though. The fact that it has no beat really rubs me wrong.

R30, Celine really got around. That's why she sang that "It's all cumming back to me now" song.

by Anonymousreply 31January 29, 2020 4:38 PM

R30, it's not. On Youtube, Whitney's IWOL has wayyyy more views than My Heart will Go On--the latter has only about 200 million combined vs. 1 billion for the former. To be perfectly fair, Whitney's streams and youtube views got a huge boost when she died so maybe the same thing will happen to Celine.

by Anonymousreply 32January 29, 2020 4:41 PM

Bless your heart, r32.

by Anonymousreply 33January 29, 2020 4:45 PM

R22 Wait, there are versions with different vocals? I never knew that.

by Anonymousreply 34January 29, 2020 5:05 PM

Celine was famous before the song. Power of Love was her first big ballad although she had a few other songs that must have at least cracked the top 10. James Horner of course was one of the greatest film composers of all time.

by Anonymousreply 35January 29, 2020 5:07 PM

r8 You have got be kidding me. The degree in which this site hates Black people is pure lunacy. Celine sucks!

by Anonymousreply 38January 29, 2020 5:14 PM

r32 It won’t happen to Celine because all of her music is middle of the road dreck that is only listened to by old White women. I’ve only heard her sing shitty ballads in her nasally voice. You can say what you want about Whitney’s complete discography, Celine never recorded a You Give Good Love, How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, I’m Every Woman, I’m Your Baby Tonight, My Love is Your Love; It’s Not Right But It’s Okay, etc.

I’m Your Baby Tonight was popular in twitter last week because the visuals were reminiscent of a Beyoncé video. Her up-tempo Pop songs and R&B slow jams seem to be aging far better than her Ballads outside of The Bodyguard Soundtrack. Celine only had a ballads.

by Anonymousreply 39January 29, 2020 5:15 PM

Celine is all of Whitney’s weaknesses as an artist maximized with none of her strengths. A nasally voice instead of a gorgeous tone is added on for good measure.

by Anonymousreply 40January 29, 2020 5:16 PM

Nevermind her stupid music, SHE NEEDS TO EAT A GOD DAMNED HAMBURGER!!!!

She looks so unhealthy! She looks like a deflated sex doll!!!!

by Anonymousreply 41January 29, 2020 5:21 PM

Houston and Dion have a lot in common. One thing they do not have in common is that Celine does not abuse substances and is having a longer career. Both have incredible pipes. However both have recorded primarily mediocre pop music and not a lot more. In my opinion they are short on artistry although maybe Celine will turn her talent to material to match it, with intelligence. Thus I cannot categorize them as in the league of the greats: Garland, Ella, Billie, Streisand, Aretha, Kline, Ronstadt etc. When Celine sings old French songs she becomes an artist and when Whitney sings gospel, the same. Of course each have recorded some solid pop music. But "When Will I Know" etc will not get you into the hall of fame vocally- neither will overwrought versions of sweet little songs. Whitney, because of her problems I assume, had a very hard time sustaining a concert. It was almost impossible for her. Celine can do a show- but the shows are pretty silly unless you like Vegas hyperbole.

I was surprised to see this isn't Celine's most viewed song on YT: I'm Alive, That's The Way It Is and A New Day Has Come all have more views.

by Anonymousreply 46January 29, 2020 6:25 PM

R45! Calm yourself! Jesus christ! R42 has an intelligent and articulate theory about a singer's legacy! At no point did he mention race!

by Anonymousreply 47January 29, 2020 6:29 PM

I agree OP. ALL of Celine's music is horrible along with the godawful Shania Twain. THANK GOD they're over now. Ear poison.

by Anonymousreply 48January 29, 2020 6:31 PM

A New Day Has Come is one of Celine's best English language songs. Precisely because it's not all belted but she gets to show off her laser fast runs and the beautiful fluidity of her voice. She has gorgeous overtones to her voice. She produces two sounds simultaneously, like monks and some mountain folk. Gives her voice a wonderful cello like depth at times. Celine is a wonderful singer, en français. The nasal sound is just the Quebecois placement of her voice more forward in the facial mask. The french all sing with a nasal sound.

But even Celine will tell you that Whitney was the greatest voice ever. Don't listen to charlie at R42. He's a lot older than 60. Closer to 80. He's very upset that no one loves Barbra Streussel.

The anorexic pic was not taken in November. Stop lying. Celine has never been anything but thin. Dangerously so for a few years after her husband died. But she is doing better now. Celine Dion will never be listed among the greats but she is a well rounded performer, an entertainer, a show-biz pro in a way Whitney Houston never was.

by Anonymousreply 60January 29, 2020 9:43 PM

R42, what about Whitney's performance of the Star Bangled Banner? Was that not art?

by Anonymousreply 61January 29, 2020 9:44 PM

R60, I wouldn't call Celine well-rounded at all. Whitney was given song lyrics but how she sang them was her choice. Celine was the opposite--she would always sing a song however she was told to by the producer/song-writer. And neither were even decent dancers, played an instrument, etc. But Whitney was capable of singing more diverse material, so I would say she was more well-rounded.

by Anonymousreply 62January 29, 2020 9:48 PM

Celine has the two best selling French language albums of all time and three albums in the top 50 best selling English albums of all time. She is almost a billionaire and still working, selling out and sounding very good indeed. She is not a legend like Whitney, of course not. But her legacy is firmly established. It's Mariah who will be forgotten. Celine will always be thought of as a singular and great voice. Her vocal abilities are both technically and sonically astounding.

She's insanely popular. She is a better and more nuanced singer in her native language.

by Anonymousreply 63January 29, 2020 9:49 PM

So how the hell did "I'm Alive" become her most watched video on youtube? That song didn't even crack the Billboard Hot 100 when it was released, sounds totally average and shows Celine at her most anorexic in the video.

by Anonymousreply 64January 29, 2020 10:08 PM

When Celine broke through with this song, she sang it phonetically. By 1994 she could sing in Englsh and phrase it more soulfully. Notice how gracious she is to Peabo Bryson, she lets him have the glory notes. She would do the same when she sang with Beyonce, Josh Groban, Anne Murray or any of her French Canadian collaborators. She's a sweet woman Celine. You won't hear a bad word about her from anyone. Does that make her boring? Maybe as Diva's go. She's batshit crazy - with a story we'll never really know. She never really seemed young. Even Whitney was a girl for a hot minute. Celine has questionable and very expensive taste. She earned every penny - including the hundreds of millions her husband gambled away. So she showed off plenty when she sang on her own. Thump!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 66January 29, 2020 11:10 PM

Her voice placement here is insane. Don't say that Celine can't interpret songs if you don't speak her language. She is most versatile. Here she keeps her voice a little guttural and forward (nasal) in the facial mask, trapping her resonance to make a thicker and slightly more crude sound. Her vibrato is gorgeous as ever but more pronounced on purpose. She is singing not in the Quebecois conversational french style that is her home, but much more like a Parisian chanteuse. A la Piaf. So beautiful to listen to, so emotional and generous. Une Diva, c'est sûr.

by Anonymousreply 70January 29, 2020 11:43 PM

R64, My Heart Will Go On may have been pulled many times off of youtube which would cause its views to be much lower than it should be.

by Anonymousreply 71January 29, 2020 11:51 PM

I'm not wrong and I don't understand the word boilerplate? I contributed to a Celine thread before, yes R70. And Whitney too. Many times. They are two of my favorite voices, though not my favorite music to listen to. Both need defending sometimes, from people who know about voices and vocal production, and for other reasons too on Datalounge - which is such a cruel place to women who don't fall in line with easy to mock expectations.

Because I am expert, some of my defenses and examples may sound the same. My expertise and feeling does not change. Sometimes I see why none of it is of much importance here. But some of us make our life and living with music. The old gays do not appreciate being informed and corrected. They are never happy, non? Regardless, you are welcome.

Here now is a boilerplate? I've posted this before. I was on this stage, but that is beside the point. Celine gave a free concert on The Plains of Abraham for the 400th anniversary of Quebec. She sang 30 songs and duets for 250,000 people that night. This was the last number, with the most revered Quebecois singing artist, Ginette Reno. Celine's voice was shot, but their raw emotion and conversational "NASAL" singing are e v e r y t h i n g. Respect between two great artists. This is the heart of Celine in a nutty shell. The Vegas costume and hair served with complete sincerity. A great connection with the song - subservience to her elders and complete exhaustion. So much feeling and hard work. Humility. What is boilerplate about this post? I don't understand that term still. Merci.

That's a bad google translate R80? I am not defensive. My professors, my mentors and my champions taught me to never defend myself. We can only expand on what we know. Artistic life is collaboration. Datalounge is neither.

I'm glad that my language is florid and muscular, heavy handed and emotional, disruptive and dictatorial. I didn't come here to learn about Celine Dion.

Celine with Destiny's Child. Beyonce is doing every last damn thing here to be noticed - but Celine hands it over to her anyway. It's their song. I hate this song. So glad others do to. It's her nasally rendition of everything that makes it impossible for me to listen to anything she sings. But I don't hate it as much as "Lady in Red." By Charles Asnivor? I fucking, fucking loathe that song.

r105 Ugliest “Pop Star” of all time, even after plastic surgery, quite an accomplishment.

That was her last good song, the culmination of the poperatic power ballads that made her famous.

But to be fair they went out of style, replaced by booty-poppin' vocorder rap.

After that she started affecting an odd singing style (luurrrve) and the good songs just didn't come her way (other than a Roy Orbison cover).

I wonder if she would have gotten to sing My Heart Will Go On, if Reba had not dropped out of the movie? I would imagine, she would have gotten to sing My Heart Will Go On or they would have written a second song for her.

Me too. I despise that song.
