Jerrod Carmichael. I liked his show and his comedy. A few months after his series was cancelled, I think he had an HBO special and he was just chatting with some relatives. I wasn't really paying much attention to the dialogue, but I thought I heard Jerrod Carmichael say he's had a couple of boyfriends or same-sex relationships and I did a double - take. I thought I misheard the TV. I forgot about it. Then about two months ago I saw an article about Jerrod which had one sentence that quickly referenced when he came out.

Didn’t know about John Goodman. Interesting. Loved him in The Big Lebowski.
I agree with Schock - more that someone in 2010s could still be so blatantly closeted. As someone who came out in the 80s, I often think it’s a non-issue now. But realize it’s still not easy. The whole “I’m not acknowledging it” publicly thing is lame though. It’s a cop out and taking advantage of the rights we fought for to hide gayness to get “benefits” of being straight and avoid the struggle.

r86 - You are correct about Willson. From his wiki page: " .. His most prominent client was Rock Hudson, whom he transformed from a clumsy, naive, Chicago-born truck driver named Roy Scherer into one of Hollywood's most popular leading men. The two were teamed professionally until 1966. In 1955, Confidential magazine threatened to publish an exposé about Hudson's secret homosexual life, and Willson disclosed information about Rory Calhoun's years in prison and Tab Hunter's arrest at a gay party in 1950 in exchange for the tabloid not printing the Hudson story. At his agent's urging, Hudson married Willson's secretary Phyllis Gates in order to put the rumors to rest and maintain a macho image, but the union dissolved after three years. .. "

R65, I was raised in Indianapolis. Even back in the early 70s there was persistent rumor that Richard Lugar was gay, had a lover, and the lover resided in Tarkington Tower on N. Meridian Street.

That's all I'm going to say.

Calling it a rumor is just an excuse to make up shit. If Dolly is gay - how come no one has ever outed her? Other country music stars have been outed. Dolly Parton has been around for 50 years and has met everyone. She employs a whole town. Her extended family is enormous and not all wealthy. Why has no one ever come up with a photo or a sighting or substantial story about her being a lesbian? Dolly knows a lot of gay men too. Nobody stays with Judy Ogle for 60 years. I say it's bullshit. I think Dolly has been with a lot of MEN.
Oprah is not gay either. Though Stedman might be.

Robert Wagner is tricky. I knew him in the 1970s and early 1980s. I would classify him as a straight man who loved attention and didn't care where he was getting it from. He was more of a user than actually gay.

Julian McMahon has lost some hair and gained some wrinkles. He looks fine. What's the big deal? He never was handsome, just a good body. Ancient gays hate it when their straight fantasy men age.

He should really stop dyeing his hair, though. There should be a newsletter for men of a certain age with strict instructions about this shit.
Julian McMahon is 51 and looks it. Shock! Horror!
No, I don't have a problem with his getting older or a few wrinkles.
There is something else going on. The weirdly unnatural hair and eyebrow color, the waxy sheen to his skin, the sagging skin that still looks stretched (skin that has been stretched looks stretched. At the same time, he's wrinkled and sagging).
Honestly, he looks haggard, like he hasn't gotten any sleep in weeks because he gets up all night long to vomit from chemo or something.

You knew Bobby Sherman personally, R136? He's one of the people I thought of when I read the thread title. I'm not sure he's gay, because the only ~attributed~ story I ever heard about him was in that Sal Mineo biography some years back. Can you say more about what you know of him?
I was also surprised to hear the rumor about John Goodman. I've never heard any anecdotes or witness accounts--just the rumor.

I'm sure that's part of the dirt Trump had on him that made Hatch act as if he just adored Trump.

Anyway, for more details, check out the book on Henry Willson. You could probably get it on Amazon or even the library.
R121, no, it was indeed Hunter, not Nader. Hunter's star was on the rise, while Nader's never really took off.
Here's the Confidential cover with the story that was leaked by Willson.

Yes, R136, Robert Wagner was probably bisexual, but at the very least, knew what he had to do to get ahead -- or give it -- as he was competing w/Willson's other clients. This story wasn't really 'news', but Woods sister was still willing to sell it as late as two years ago.

by Anonymous | reply 190 | January 23, 2020 7:57 AM |
More on Henry and his boys...
"At peak operation, Henry opened and personally answered “9000 letters per year from hopefuls.” Among those who passed through Willson’s office, if not necessarily his hands, were Robert Wagner (right, with Willson), James Darren, John Saxon, Dack Rambo, and the patrician future ambassador to Mexico (and second lead in Psycho), John Gavin (Henry “knew not to hit on John Gavin”). Of all the postwar heartthrobs, Farley Granger (whose forthcoming autobiography should shine additional light into the shadowy corners of Hollywood history) stands almost alone in escaping Henry Willson’s management.
The heart of the make-believe was the straight date, preferably to attend a studio premiere, so Willson cultivated a harem of beards to facilitate photo ops. Debbie Reynolds, who used to hang out with Tab Hunter at the New Follies Burlesque, tells Hofler, “Oh sure, I dated all the boys who were homosexual, because I liked them better. They weren’t fresh. They were fun. They were sweet. They didn’t come on to me. All the straight guys were coming on to me. And I couldn’t stand that. I was seventeen. I was a virgin. I didn’t want hands all over me.”
Stepping deeper into conscious bearding, Natalie Wood and Margaret O’Brien used to play a “game of trying to figure out which of their dates had slept with Henry.”
Too seasoned a Hollywood observer to construct any nostalgic valentine, Hofler instead draws us into this cut-throat business of users, where sexual pleasure is given and taken as a consequence of power. One major Hollywood power broker, Lew Wasserman, said, “When I became a talent agent for MCA, the word ‘agent’ was synonymous with ‘pimp’.” According to the author, Henry “often advised his clients to sleep with an executive or influential director” and not only gay clients. One reporter observed, “It was amazing what some heterosexual men would do to get a career in Hollywood. Many thought nothing of sleeping with another man, if it got them a job.”

Colin Farrell and Jared Leto both shocked me. I didn’t get this from DL but from an insider who when I said I didn’t believe it, just shrugged and said “that’s on you”, he didn’t care. I’ve seen Farrell’s every enthusiastic sex tape so I guess bisexuality exists. People have to start accepting it.

Debbie Reynolds didn't really surprise me, although it will probably surprise a lot of peeps. I have a feeling a book will be coming out (pardon the pun) about her in the next year or so. She 'dated' all the gay boys.

R161, Bobby Sherman was very nice. I was 10-12 at the time. I felt as if I was with a classmate not an adult. I met him a few times. I was always very comfortable around him.
As far as I know, he has never denied the info in the Sal Mineo book. That would seem to indicate that it is true.
The other thing that somewhat surprised me was upon hearing that Bobby Sherman was now an EMT, my father (a doctor) volunteered the information that all EMTs were gay. I have no idea where that came from. It was kind of out of nowhere and there was no reason for him to say that.
PS, yes, my father is the same guy who was hit on by Raymond Burr.
R189, you can call Robert Wagner bisexual if you want, but there are always going to be straight guys who use gay men like Kleenex and treat then the same way. As I wrote, the best description of him is "user".

Robert Conrad once bragged about a weekend he spent with Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood, saying he bagged them both. Conrad had an affair with a friend of mine (male) who said that RC was a very confused and angry gay - liked to get into fist fights with his tricks. He was also a sad alcoholic -- his last wife left him because he hit her too often (although shouldn't once be too much?) His daughter used to hang around Chelsea and sell mementos of her Dad to the eldergays who still crushed on him.

Harry Andrews was a shock to me, whenever I heard it - as a teen, I guess. Because of the parts he always played. He wasn't that famous but movie buffs knew him from all the British war movies.
I guess I was originally shocked about James Dean because again, I was a kid and he didn't particularly seem gay (to me then).
Farley Granger seemed gay to me without any knowledge of it one way or the other. So did John Dall. So did John Travolta.

And when Pitt left he ghosted the guy which hurt the writer deeply. They seemed to have had a close relationship though not necessarily a sexual one as far as we know. But Brad did not want 'guilt' by association. After having a much needed place to stay he left the guy in the dust having no sentiment whatsoever though being a self centered emotionally empty handsome charismatic actor he made the man feel as if they had a deep friendship. What a terrible bitter feeling it leaves you with to be used in that way and to know you in and of yourself were meaningless.

Matt LeBlanc and Zac Efron have apeared on Graham Norton twice TOGETHER!!! Which I found odd. They didn't have projects to promote together, so them appearing together TWICE was really weird to me. Connie Britton is an obvious lesbian to anyone who knows anything about her life. She hasn't dated a man in 3 decades, adopted kids by herself, and is BFFs with Sarah Paulson, so that one didn't surprise me. The rumors about Pedro Pasacal did, though probably the same thing could be said about him and his life -- I admittedly just wasn't paying attention.

Not gonna lie, I didn't first believe Hugh Jackman is gay. Someone in a gay torrent forum claimed he knew for sure Jackman's gay and I remember saying no he's not. This was probably right after X2 when he was just so deliciously hot. The guy then explained that he was at that very moment a crew member shooting a film with Jackman and everybody there knew Hugh had rented a house with his boyfriend for the duration of the shoot. I certainly started believing then. And I also realized the thing that makes him so irresistible is that certain je ne sais quoi slightly femme thing that makes some masculine guys so yummy.

Jimmy Fallon. He had Fran Liebowitz on and during the interview he got excited and blurted out something and he started to say "My Husband!" but caught himself. I almost spit out my mint julep! I hit rewind and sure enough, he said "my husb--" and quickly rephrased the question.
Then I found out he was married to a "recovering lesbian". Humph. Something's fishy.

by Anonymous | reply 313 | January 25, 2020 7:54 PM |
R310/R312 apologies. Time-stamp is roughly 29 minutes in, where Liam walks in and embraces Bradley in a way far too intimate for National television. Beyond that point Cooper basically all but sits in Neeson’s lap and swoons in an extremely obvious way (the kind of fashion where you’re clearly reminiscing about the man’s cock but can’t say that aloud). I can’t remember anything else in particular as it aired and I saw it many years ago.

People started talking about Paul Newman in the 1970s because he wanted to produce a movie of The Front Runner, the story of a gay relationship between coach and star athlete. Paul was a liberal and wanted to dramatize (then) cutting edge issues...I supposed he couldn't get the film financed. The big news about Newman after his death was that he was not only an alcoholic, but quite frequently a public drunk, not gay.

And then years earlier there had been Cat on a Hot Tin Roof where he played a sports star mourning the death of his male lover. The gay aspect was watered down in the film but it was easy to read between the lines. Such a gorgeous film. I wrote a short analysis about it as a school assignment years ago and fell in love with the film even more after realizing how well put together it is in practically every way.
I have no trouble believing Newman was bi or even gay but you never know. He was so beautiful that he was probably adored by both men and women since he was a teen. When you're in that position it's easy to try everything offered if you're even only slightly curious. I actually have a hard time believing no man ever sucked his dick.
by Anonymous | reply 354 | January 27, 2020 8:15 PM |
I was shocked Paul was bi, but Joanne made sense. She really pinged. I think the reason the marriage worked was because they were both bi and let the other have same sex relations. I did read in a book, I think it was the writer who knew and did James Dean and hated Steve McQueen, that when Paul did a play it was known Paul had to have a young man around to fuck but got angry if anyone said he was gay.

I 'm not a big fan of the film. I played Brick once - the play is altogether better, the movie is not just censored (of necessity, in 1958) but it's almost completely rewritten, with all sorts of wrong emphasis. Like Richard Brooks thought he could be a better writer than Tennessee Williams. I mean look at Streetcar, a really good, pretty faithful film was made of it (Elia Kazan directed the play and the film). If Kazan (who directed Cat on the stage) had directed Cat on film, it probably would have been much more true to the source material. Just my opinion.

I agree, Selleck must have had the opportunity to be with so many of the most beautiful women with all of the actresses and models he must have met and worked with, and he chooses Jilly? Everyone seemed surprised when they saw her. Maybe they just clicked though, chemistry can be way more important than looks. Didn’t they have a daughter together? Or was she adopted?
Obviously we can’t say for sure unless a guy who fucked Tom comes forward with proof, or Tom is caught with another men by the press. That’s true. Maybe it’s all just rumors and speculation, some of the stories might come from men who wish he were gay.

My problem with all this is that with really famous men in the closet, somebody is going to tell. (sell the story)
There's too much money in it. Paul Berresi sold his John Travolta story and his pilot sued him for sexual stuff.
When I lived in L.A. I heard every rumor. Some turned out to be true (Bruce Jenner wearing ladies clothes, Bill Cosbys' really bad behaviors and Bryan Singers kiddie fucking) and others (Tom Cruise, Tom Selleck and others being gay) not so much.
If you want a really good one it's the one about Steven Spielbergs' "stalker". That guy got shafted. Who goes stalking carrying a massage table? Please. And he wasn't home? Maybe. Did the S&M hooker/masseur come on the wrong night? Possibly. Did TPTB cover the whole thing up and shaft a nobody to protect their own? Absolutely.

Posh friend, now deceased, and related to Sunny von Bulow, had in his freezer a condom with Paul Newman's frozen spunk in it. Friend had had a 3-some with Paul, and Paul back in the 60s was practicing safe sex. Friend saved the condom as a memento.
Hauser PULLED his underwear on when the police knocked. Obviously, he was naked, too.
That is exactly what happened, yet the fraus at the the time, in between attacking the political for wanting to be in the news for arresting a celebrity, kept saying “the other guy wasn’t naked” as defence. It’s a joke.
Gawker had a bit about McConaughey being "pansexual
I remember that. This was at the height of MM’s ‘surfer-dude bro’ fame where he was considered hotter than Brad Pitt because he appealed to women and straight men. Not sure if it was that same piece, but Gawker also spilled about him hitting on a male model in Milan, tried to get him to go to his hotel room, and the model, who was straight, declined but obviously spilled.
God, I miss Gawker, who knows how many closets they would a flung open by now especially in this climate. Peter Thiel set us back to the 1950s on this issue.

I would have never guessed about Daniel J. Travanti back then, I was too young to notice and I never thought about him. Having had relatives who worked in Hollywood for decades (with some family going back to the very early days of the silents) as well as friends who had also worked in the studios or on Broadway, no gay rumors really surprised me. What does though is some people who apparently either never heard of some of the more wide-spread gossip or simply dismisses it out of hand because "it can't be true". For example, I was in an online Hollywood gossip discussion forum earlier and someone mentioned Eartha Kitt's claim that she had a threeway with Paul Newman and James Dean and when I mentioned both actors were bisexual but leaning more toward men, someone responded with "Wait, Paul Newman was bi???"

Same with the fraus using Colin Farrell’s and Chris Evans’ gay brothers to say they’d be out about having sex with men because of they have no hang ups. Val Kilmer, which I only ever heard here (thread below).
He’s even played explicitly gay on film a couple of times before as well as starring in the most homoerotic mainstream picture of all time, and still it never crossed my mind he could actually be in real life. There’s something unassailable hetero about his whole vibe, to me, though the seed of suspicion has now been planted in my mind. Even picturing him authentically kissing a guy is difficult, and I’ve seen him do it on film before. Maybe it’s RDJ’s doing..

Believe what you like. If you don't think that people who are uncomfortable in their own skin and are told by society that they are immoral are more likely to abuse alcohol and other substances, that's fine with me. If you believe for one second that Tennessee Williams told Warren Beatty to go back to his room when he showed up at his door willing to do anything for a role, then you’re an idiot. Likewise Clint Eastwood and Brad Pitt taken in by older men out of the kindness of their hearts.
Unfortunately, gay sex isn’t something people are willing to blast from the rooftops, and it will stay like that for the foreseeable future. You have to learn to read between the lines. So we know James Dean and Paul Newman probably hooked up based on Dean’s history, the way they interacted and stories such as Eartha Kitt spilling about their threesome. Quincy Jones said Marlon Brando fucked James Baldwin, Marvin Gaye and Richard Pryor - likely true. Alexis Arquette stated he had sex with Jared Leto while he was still presenting as a male - true and first hand. James Franco spending the night in Xavier Dolan’s hotel room - they weren’t just talking movies.

r359 Kemp did run for Vice President. And Bob Dole had been in Washington for decades, so its not like Kemp being gay was conventional wisdom. Kemp was also fully vetted for VP which is an expensive process--like the world's most thorough background check. They spend hundreds of thousands of dollars doing that background check including private investigators. So if he was on the downlow--it was really far down. (No Palin jokes please, she did not go through a traditional vetting process...see the movie GAME CHANGE to see how they fucked that up)

r532 You still needed to make that comment after I pointed out not to make a Palin joke because she was not vetted?
r527 A political campaign is not connected to the government (in the way you seem to be thinking about). A campaign would have the VP candidate do a full disclosure where they list ALL financial information, their family members, accounting for all of their schooling, friends in high school, friends in college, college roommates, post college roommates, and every single man or woman they had a relationship with. I don't think one night stands count but if you dated someone for a few months, their name goes on the list. Then private detectives, paid for with campaign money, go around and interview ALL of these people and see what they can dig up. They're probably former FBI or CIA with interrogation training so they know how to ask questions, sense dishonesty, and know how to follow up. If ANYTHING is learned by the private detectives that was not disclosed by the candidate him or herself (such as . a drunk driving arrest or a girlfriend's abortion or even minor infractions that aren't necessarily scandalous), they're toast--they won't get the VP nomination because who knows what else they lied about or didn't disclose. It's as much a process of showing they can be open and honest and won't cause problems for the campaign later.
Dick Cheney was never vetted for Bush's VP because he was in charge of the vetting process of potential VP's. Seriously.

I'm pretty sure chronic severe alcoholism is one of the causes of esophageal cancer.
On the TV show "Intervention", they had a good looking middle-aged dad who was a chronic alcoholic. Once when he was returning home, he got sick and blood came out. He was diagnosed with esophageal varices and later died.
Lauren Bacall looked butch and dykey? What kind of fruity, limp wristed, girly guys are you, if someone who doesn't look and "act" like a Barbie doll is too too manly for a woman to you?
She did not look or act butch or dikey AT ALL. She wasn't exactly Anne Of Green Gables, either. She was a sexy, sultry-looking, womanly beauty.
She did have a low voice - from the time she first came to Hollywood. Howard Hawks (director) told her her voice was too high. She lowered it by going into the hills and reading The Robe aloud, yelling it until she was hoarse.
Lizabeth Scott, otoh, was probably gay. And she was thought to be a bit like Bacall.
This thread is interesting because - have you ever been GENUINELY surprised by a gay rumor? I don't think I ever have been. I'm supposedly straight-acting - maybe that's why? I don't expect anyone gay to 'seem' gay.

That sounds like something a PR person cooke up. She smoked like a chimney so she had a low voice. She probably bellowed a lot as a child. There wasn't a father around to tell her to knock it off.
by Anonymous | reply 546 | February 29, 2020 2:37 PM |
R546 You bellowed a lot as a child, stop projecting. She said it in her autobiography. She was 18 when she came to Hollywood. Maybe she started smoking when she was 12, though. You'll read that in another thread some day. "Bacall started smoking when she was twelve to escape the abusive bellowing fights with her single mom."
I don't actually think smoking lowers everyone's voice. It's been blamed for Lucille Ball's later deep voice but she never had the deep voice on I Love Lucy despite being in her 40s already. It was only after she did Wildcat on Broadway and sang and yelled a lot that she made herself hoarse. Jack Webb, though - probably smoking. But my aunt is 86 and has smoked at least 70 years and doesn't have a deep voice. Johnny Carson didn't have a croaky voice. I think it depends, it's not a reliable voice-lowerer.

Yes, I was genuinely surprised to read about Spencer Tracy. He was just about the last Hollywood actor I ever expected to find out was gay, even though I had already heard about Katharine Hepburn.
I believe R547 is right. Lucille Ball's voice changed drastically in the 1960s because she did WILDCAT on Broadway, and since she wasn't a singer and had never learned the skills to project her speaking or singing voice in a theater eight times a week, she apparently did a lot of yelling and developed nodes on her vocal cords.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | February 29, 2020 4:46 PM |
R549 Thanks, both posts were mine. Do you really think Spence was gay, though? There's only the Scotty Bowers book, and he also names Walter Pidgeon and a lot of other people, all dead. Tracy is my favorite actor, and I often wondered if the unknown thing Hepburn said bothered him, was that he was gay - or bi. For a gay man he chased and went out with a LOT of women, though - and there are no accounts of anything with men except for Bowers.
Hepburn too went out with many men, I heard this from someone who knew a relative, and if you read about her, there's an incident when she was going out with Doug Fairbanks and he found her parked in a car kissing Charles Boyer. Doesn't seem like a total lesbian. If she was strictly gay, she had doings with a lot of dudes. John Ford, too.
Perhaps they were both bi.

Aaron Hernandez didnt surprise me for whatever reason.
This one is bizarre.........I dont even know that she is a lesbian but she has never been married and seemed to have an extremely low key personal life......................but Donna Mills, the tv actress. I always thought she was very very beautiful in her younger years and probably had to fight off the men. Its not to say that beautiful women cant be lesbians but even thinking about that possibilty for her seemed weird.
another weird one for me was 40 s b movie actor and tv actor craig stevens. He was married to actress alexis smith, better known actress. Stevens was also an early Henry willson client. In the book about Willson he seemed very proud of hooking up gay actors with women to marry and how successful some of those marriages were. Smith was a lesbian. Smith and Stevens were married for over 50 years, no kids, and you never heard a peep about their personal life, ever.
I sort of got into Stevens............... watching him in reruns of a 50 s detective show called Peter Gunn. He played this kind of cary grant smooth, suave tv detective. In looking at some of the scenes I could kind of see Stevens was maybe on the downlow. You cant say being married to the opposite sex for 50 years and neither one into the other (perhaps) wouldnt have made for some interesting behind the scenes chit chat?

by Anonymous | reply 578 | April 17, 2020 2:54 AM |
R578 Dan Butler was always very vocal about his sexuality, even 20 years ago when he was on Frazier I can remember him discussing it. Similarly, John Mahoney and David Hyde Pierce were 'out' within the industry and not pretending to be straight publicly.
Apparently with most Hollywood actors (TV and film) it's the agents who stop them revealing their sexuality and not producers or studios. It's total bullshit the industry believes "the public won't accept a gay actor'. There are plenty of out gay UK actors and the public accept them in roles. The big reason gay and bisexual actors have now and have always been made (by their agents) to remain closeted is due to the fact that if an actor comes out (or is out) and once had sex with a (now) more famous/successful closeted actor, that (famous) actor's agent will not want his client working with the out actor.
Also, plenty of those famous 'straight' actors weren't necessarily gay but hustled to get on in Hollywood. Lee Majors, Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell were notorious as being 'live in' rent boys.
The best comment I heard from a Hollywood insider is, the Casting Couch in Hollywood is now way less about women and more and more about men. If you think Harvey Weinstein was bad, there would be dozens of powerful executives who would try that tactic with men too! In fact, people have since come out and said the whole 'Metoo' thing was bullshit, as it was the men in Hollywood who were receiving the most sexual harassment.

People, I'm SURE it's true that, in Hollywood, there has long been rampant sexual harassment (and worse) of ALL types -- probably mostly male on female and male on male, and probably less frequently female on male and female on female. Those situations are mostly about power. I don't understand why it's important for anyone to insist that any one type is more common than the others, because what does that really matter? It's wrong no matter what the details.
by Anonymous | reply 595 | April 19, 2020 12:57 AM |
The vast majority of people in positions of power in Hollywood are straight men. Yes, there are more gay people in showbiz than in the general population, but that doesn't mean all or most people in Hollywood are gay. If straights are the majority, then how could gay harassment be more prevalent than straight harassment? R595, the issue is that right-wing homophobic straight men are lying about the prevalence of male/male harassment to attack gays
by Anonymous | reply 596 | April 19, 2020 1:08 AM |
I did not write that gay harassment is more prevalent than straight harassment, I said there's probably a lot of both, and probably a lot of casting couch on both sides as well, regardless of whether it's initiated by the person in power or the wannabe actor. I do believe that most of those in power who are involved in this sort of thing are probably men, either straight or gay. And while I'm sure you're right that the majority of men in positions of power in Hollywood are straight, I'm not sure the majority is as "vast" as you say. But this is not the sort of thing for which one can ever hope to get accurate numbers....
