Having had relatives who worked in Hollywood for decades (with some family going back to the very early days of the silents) as well as friends who had also worked in the studios or on Broadway, no gay rumors really surprised me. Yes, I was genuinely surprised to read about Spencer Tracy. He was just about the last Hollywood actor I ever expected to find out was gay, even though I had already heard about Katharine Hepburn.

I sort of got into Stevens............... watching him in reruns of a 50 s detective show called Peter Gunn. He played this kind of cary grant smooth, suave tv detective. In looking at some of the scenes I could kind of see Stevens was maybe on the downlow. You cant say being married to the opposite sex for 50 years and neither one into the other (perhaps) wouldnt have made for some interesting behind the scenes chit chat?

Stevens moved on to Frances Bergen in the waker of Smith's death. That doesn't seem a very gay move.

Dan Butler has been out most of his life. In my mind I assumed he was like his Frasier character. But I only recently found out he’s gay and has been together with his husband for decades.

Apparently with most Hollywood actors (TV and film) it's the agents who stop them revealing their sexuality and not producers or studios. It's total bullshit the industry believes "the public won't accept a gay actor'. There are plenty of out gay UK actors and the public accept them in roles. The big reason gay and bisexual actors have now and have always been made (by their agents) to remain closeted is due to the fact that if an actor comes out (or is out) and once had sex with a (now) more famous/successful closeted actor, that (famous) actor's agent will not want his client working with the out actor.

Also, plenty of those famous 'straight' actors weren't necessarily gay but hustled to get on in Hollywood. Lee Majors, Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell were notorious as being 'live in' rent boys.

The best comment I heard from a Hollywood insider is, the Casting Couch in Hollywood is now way less about women and more and more about men. If you think Harvey Weinstein was bad, there would be dozens of powerful executives who would try that tactic with men too! In fact, people have since come out and said the whole 'Metoo' thing was bullshit, as it was the men in Hollywood who were receiving the most sexual harassment.

People, I'm SURE it's true that, in Hollywood, there has long been rampant sexual harassment (and worse) of ALL types -- probably mostly male on female and male on male, and probably less frequently female on male and female on female. Those situations are mostly about power. I don't understand why it's important for anyone to insist that any one type is more common than the others, because what does that really matter? It's wrong no matter what the details.

The vast majority of people in positions of power in Hollywood are straight men. Yes, there are more gay people in showbiz than in the general population, but that doesn't mean all or most people in Hollywood are gay. If straights are the majority, then how could gay harassment be more prevalent than straight harassment? I did not write that gay harassment is more prevalent than straight harassment, I said there's probably a lot of both, and probably a lot of casting couch on both sides as well, regardless of whether it's initiated by the person in power or the wannabe actor. I do believe that most of those in power who are involved in this sort of thing are probably men, either straight or gay. And while I'm sure you're right that the majority of men in positions of power in Hollywood are straight, I'm not sure the majority is as "vast" as you say. But this is not the sort of thing for which one can ever hope to get accurate numbers....

Well, no one knows for sure how many people are gay, but one poll of SAG members showed that about 15% of actors identify as gay. And in my experience, directors, producers, and execs are less likely to be gay than actors.
