Every little girl can dream of being a pop star. You don’t have to be attractive, you don’t need a nice body, you don’t have to dance, you don’t have to be able to sing, and you don’t even need to look like you have to practice good hygiene. You only need to be you. It helps if you can “co-write” a few derivative, “yes kween” pop anthems.

They were uglier in the 70's. If you ever catch a Time/Life infomercial and see who really sings those songs you loved, it'll ruin it for you sometimes.

I came of age during the seventies, when good-looking pop or rock stars were almost nonexistent. I mean there was Linda Ronstat and Stevie Nicks, who were pretty rather than beautiful, but most of the men were skinny and grubby and most of the women were Carole King or Karen Carpenter. Looks didn't seem to matter at all to the music industry, at least not until the 80s when videos came in. Then Madonna and Michael Jackson created a demand for singers who were... photogenic at least.

Phonogenic is better than photogenic for a zinger.
