Watching Goodfellas on IFC

Is this the greatest gangster movie every made?

by Anonymousreply 29January 11, 2020 11:26 AM

No no Casino was better

by Anonymousreply 1January 10, 2020 4:47 PM

I think about Good Fellas a lot. I love when Paulie shaves the garlic with a razor blade (in jail) so it dissolves in the oil when it's cooked. I also love toward the end when Henry keeps going over his to-do list and it always includes minding his sauce. Also, when he freaks out, screaming, KAAAAAREN, why did you DO THAT KAAAAAREN? That was all we HAAAAAD! One of the few Scorsese films with a woman co-lead.

by Anonymousreply 2January 10, 2020 4:57 PM

[italic]The Godfather[/italic] owns both of them.

by Anonymousreply 3January 10, 2020 4:59 PM

KAREN! KAAREN!!

by Anonymousreply 4January 10, 2020 5:01 PM

I'd rather gouge my eyes out than watch it.

by Anonymousreply 5January 10, 2020 5:04 PM

Nope, that would be The Long Good Friday. The last two minutes of that film alone are better than anything in those repetitive Scorsese movies. I'm glad he criticised those shitty Marvel films but Marty's not much better himself. He's been making the same movie over and over again for the last three decades.

The Godfather part II is the only gangster movie I'd put above it. I definitely don't think Casino is better, it is way too long.

by Anonymousreply 7January 10, 2020 5:11 PM

Also, Kaaaaren showing up to push the buttons of the goomba's apartment, then the super, "You have hoor living heah!"

by Anonymousreply 8January 10, 2020 5:12 PM

I'm trying to remember one thing about [italic]Hugo[/italic] other than the part talking about the instability of nitrate film.

by Anonymousreply 9January 10, 2020 5:16 PM

R8, you don’t mean goomba, you mean goomara.

by Anonymousreply 10January 10, 2020 5:30 PM

Godfather II is almost three and a half hours long. Casino is barely three hours. I agree that the former is the better movie, btw.

by Anonymousreply 11January 10, 2020 5:36 PM

R11, I know Godfather part II is longer but to me, it feels like the material is better suited to epic length than Casino is. Casino could have been trimmed by at least 30-45 minutes and been improved--not enough there to sustain my interest as long as Goodfellas and Godfather II did.

by Anonymousreply 12January 10, 2020 5:38 PM

[italic]Casino[/italic] was fine, it just came too soon after [italic]Goodfellas[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 13January 10, 2020 5:38 PM

R10--Ok! I was just too lazy to look up Janice's name and used the wrong word. Dumb either way.

Fave Kaaaren look below!

I love Goodfellas

by Anonymousreply 15January 10, 2020 5:45 PM

No it is not OP.

by Anonymousreply 16January 10, 2020 9:26 PM

Goodfellas is self-aware but embraces life.

Godfather and Godfather II are self-aware but are focused on being ART.

Like the difference between Franz Hals and Rembrandt.

Although Mean Streets is more like Jan Steen.

Casino? Not so great.

by Anonymousreply 17January 10, 2020 9:32 PM

I prefer Scorsese's depiction of gangsters to Coppola's because there's nothing elegaic or iconic about them. They're just stupid loser dirtbags.

by Anonymousreply 18January 10, 2020 9:34 PM

Howard Hawks 1932 Scarface is the greatest gangster movie. OBVIOUSLY

by Anonymousreply 19January 10, 2020 9:47 PM

Oh, you're a funny guy.

Some Jean-Pierre Melville's crappy gangster films were 10 times better and with much much fewer voice-overs.

by Anonymousreply 21January 10, 2020 11:03 PM

I really like Goodfellas, but it’s all surface. It’s brilliantly filmed and edited. Everything—the fashion, the soundtrack, everything— is curated within an inch of its life. But it is without psychological insight or emotion.

by Anonymousreply 22January 10, 2020 11:21 PM

Thanks, Ebert.

by Anonymousreply 23January 10, 2020 11:22 PM

Gomorrah is the best. Both Goodfellas and The Godfather romanticize the mafia, albeit in different ways.

by Anonymousreply 24January 10, 2020 11:24 PM

R17 I'm ignorant. Explain please??

by Anonymousreply 25January 10, 2020 11:36 PM

You’re not ignorant, r25, he’s just pompous.

by Anonymousreply 26January 10, 2020 11:46 PM

Goodfellas is the most perfect film ever made.

by Anonymousreply 27January 11, 2020 1:03 AM

Goodfellas gets boring after Joe Pesci gets wacked. He brought the intensity. I personally prefer Casino simply for the fact that Pesci lasts to the very end, and we get more of him.

Oh, dear!
