Do people still wear robes?

I just happened to notice a robe in the back of my closet that I’ve had for probably 20 years. I rarely ever used it because robes always just seemed over the top to me and more annoying than comfy. Then I got to thinking - does anyone wear robes at home anymore besides old people? The only time I could see younger people wearing a robe now is if they were at a spa.

I do, OP and own probably 7 of them. But I am An Old.

by Anonymousreply 1January 9, 2020 9:59 PM

No, the last robe wearer died about seven years ago.

by Anonymousreply 2January 9, 2020 10:00 PM

I believe the national robe cut off age is 72.

I prefer caftans.

I have a thick spa robe that I wear in the winter when I use my hot tub. It's like a giant towel so I don't really have to dry off except my feet. I also wear it when I get out of the shower and don't get dressed right away. Growing up, I had to wear a robe over pajamas because my house was so fucking freezing. Drafty old Victorian during the 70s energy crisis meant the thermostat rarely went above 62 in winter.

How often do you wash it if you use it like a towel (since most people wash a towel after 2 or 3 uses)?

When you wake up and it is 60 degrees in your house, why wouldn't you put on a robe?

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2020 10:16 PM

Why didn't you include a sometimes option, OP? I don't all the time, but sometimes I do.

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2020 10:20 PM

Yes, silly OP!

A Seersucker blue stripe for summer, heavy cotton or light fleece for winter, and a mid-weight JosABank plaid for everything in-between.

I like having dangly balls and very little restricting me everywhere else.

When the day is done my robe and a glass of red wine set the tone for lounging or sex. Or after-sex lounging.

by Anonymousreply 11January 9, 2020 10:33 PM

I had to train myself to wear PJs, a robe, and slippers. The robe I only wear briefly when I get out of the shower. Since we are both clean, I schedule to clean it twice a year. I just cleaned it. In practice, I clean it a little more often. I have 9 pairs of PJs and clean them daily.

I used to wear athletic shorts, a T shirt, and white socks.

by Anonymousreply 12January 9, 2020 11:00 PM

Yes, OP, I do.

But I’m an eldergay at the ripe old age of 48.

by Anonymousreply 13January 9, 2020 11:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 14January 9, 2020 11:16 PM

Yes, i do. The house is cold. It is another layer in winter. In the summer it’s cooler ad less restrictive than shorts etc (I like freeballing too). I have a thicker , terry cloth one I will occasionally grab post shower or bath but honestly it is too heavy

by Anonymousreply 15January 9, 2020 11:30 PM

No. I have a nice navy blue one hanging on a hook in the bathroom. Never wear it.

I don’t have experience wearing robes and I don’t know anyone who wears a robe.

Do you lounge around the house in a robe? Or only wear it for trips from bed to the bathroom? Do you do that sitcom thing where you leave the robe draped over the foot of the bed and put it in before investigating a bump in the night?

I lounge around the house in a T-shirt and sweatpants and I wear my PJs for trips to the bathroom at night.

by Anonymousreply 20January 10, 2020 12:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 21January 10, 2020 12:29 AM

I hate being cold when I come out of the shower,so I must have my robe. Its also very efficient to dry off most of your body when you are in a hurry to get dressed after showering, which is me almost every morning.

by Anonymousreply 22January 10, 2020 1:22 AM

I suppose the brutish OP doesn't wear a dressing gown - a robe de chambre - when guests arrive unexpectedly in the evening. The creature probably thinks he's too "butch" for velvet.

by Anonymousreply 23January 10, 2020 1:46 AM

Yes. I have a lightweight 100% cotton bathrobe for summer, and a thick fleece robe for winter.

But I'm an Old.

by Anonymousreply 24January 10, 2020 7:27 AM

I find wearing a robe creepy. It makes me feel like I’m missing out on things going on in the world while I’m in a robe. It’s hard to explain. Also, wearing a robe makes me feel vulnerable. Weird I know.

I prefer sweats, socks and a hoodie.

by Anonymousreply 25January 10, 2020 7:41 AM

Most people I know wear one in the winters, but it gets fucking cold here! You wear one even over fleece pants and sweatshirts.

by Anonymousreply 26January 10, 2020 8:03 AM

I put on a robe when I get up in the morning, before I shower and get dressed. It's quicker and more casual than putting on a shirt and sweatpants - which is what would call "getting dressed" if I'm not going out.

by Anonymousreply 29January 10, 2020 11:13 AM

No, underwear most of the time. Sometimes naked if it's warm. If it's cold a sweat shirt and socks. Had a robe as boy which I wore but when I became a teen it felt ridiculous. Now I would feel like I were imitating Noel Coward or Moss Howard in a very posh home.

by Anonymousreply 30January 10, 2020 11:30 AM

I have two that I forget I own (they were gifts) and don't wear much. One is a towel-like thing, that I would probably wear if I wasn't living alone. As it is, I usually get out of the shower in a towel or just naked it it's warm enough. The other one is a really thick and warm fleecy robe that would be nice to wear over pajamas when it's cold and you don't want to get dressed. But it was a gag gift and the print is so ugly I try to forget it exists. I just use old sweaters instead.

I LOVE robes --- silky soft and sexy

by Anonymousreply 38January 10, 2020 3:26 PM

I have two, one made from towelling material and one fleece. I usually sleep naked so they are great for grabbing in the middle of the night for a toilet break, they are good for throwing on when you just got out the bath, or when you want to walk around the house after getting out of bed or before you go to bed and you don't want to put clothes/full pajamas on.

by Anonymousreply 39January 10, 2020 3:33 PM

Robes are a holdover from when having the proper clothes for every occasion was a status thing. Having pajamas and a robe proved you had the wealth and good taste not to sleep naked or in your underwear. The style shift came in the 1970s when people started showing their status by dressing down. Showing up in jeans and a t-shirt demonstrated you had enough status to not give a fuck how you looked.

I like robes, I don't wear them a lot but I seem to keep buying them. I think I got into them from watching old movies where everyone was always in a robe. Robes are still useful if you share a household with roommates, elderly parents, or visitors. I was raised that it's rude to walk around in your pajamas and that they should be covered, yet I completely forgot about robes for a few decades, until I moved back in with elders needing care.

Also, like many other posters, I like to don a robe after my shower, especially in the chillier months, so I don't have to rush to dress. Who wants to drag clothes on over damp skin?

by Anonymousreply 53January 10, 2020 5:30 PM

Since I take a shower in the morning right before heading off to work, it makes no sense for me to wear a robe before I change into my work clothes.

I like wearing robes. Have 2 for after-shower time, one knee-length, the other ankle-length, for when the house is cool. It's great being able to walk or lounge around in one, before getting dressed. Gives me a chance to relax after showering, and by then I feel completely dry.

LOVE my fleece robes, have 2 in an identical pattern, just a different color. I made them myself, to accommodate my body, because most robes are too short(mine just miss touching the floor), the hood is too small, belt not long enough( ahem..... be nice). Usually wear them over a thin cotton or flannel nightshirt(also made by me), and always with thick cotton or wool socks.

by Anonymousreply 64January 10, 2020 10:31 PM

I like nice PJs, but robes seem superfluous. If I'm really feeling I need to cover up, a robe seems less "secure"... they come open, feel flouncy, and the sleeves get into things. I've never felt comfortable in them.

I often receive them as gifts, and always give them away, or donate to charity when purging my closet.

Never had one growing up so never developed a habit of wearing one. However, someone gave me one a couple of years ago when I was recovering from surgery, and tonight when I went to change into my sweats after work, I saw it there and thought of this thread. I’m wearing it now...just feels awkward. It’s not substantial enough to wear alone, and over anything else, it’s like wearing a coat in the house.

R70, when you say you didn't have one growing up, I'm curious. When you were a boy, what did you wear when you got up in the morning? Did you get dressed before even leaving your room? Or did you wear just your PJ's to breakfast? Or did you wear underwear to bed and to walk around the house, outside your room?

I know I'm being OK Boomer here, but I can't imagine being a little boy and having to get fully dressed just to go down to breakfast, and my mother wouldn't have considered pajamas alone appropriate for more than a walk down the hall. I didn't sleep in my underwear - I don't think most children did back in the day - but my father did, and he always put on a robe to hang around in the morning.

by Anonymousreply 72January 11, 2020 12:23 AM

I gave a robe to my co worker for Christmas. He had a bad break up this year; he relayed how the now ex girlfriends daughter stopped by to try and get them back together and he had to grab shorts, because he was lounging at home in boxers and a t-shirt.

by Anonymousreply 73January 11, 2020 12:53 AM

I have three robes.

If I'm at home alone, I don't usually wear one, unless it's cold.

If my boyfriend stays over, I'll wear it in the morning.. If a friend or relative is staying over, I will wear my robe.

by Anonymousreply 74January 11, 2020 3:31 AM

Similar to r73 is why I got one.

At my job, if you’re out sick they can do a home visit, since they’re paying you. One day I got a text from my boss giving me a heads up that someone would be stopping by. Since I usually lounge in underwear I had nothing to put on. If I had on jogging pants or something I wouldn’t look “sick,” so I bought a robe just for those type of occasions. Then I got used to wearing it.

by Anonymousreply 75January 11, 2020 11:55 AM

Only when opening Parliament and such.

by Anonymousreply 76January 11, 2020 12:29 PM

I used to wear them all the time - but they no longer make any that I like. I must have bought about TEN in recent years.

Firstly, I can't wear synthetic ones and most of them are synthetic.

Also many of the towelling ones are WAY TOO BIG and HEAVY - like wearing a great big overcoat indoors...make me sweat like a pig. I HATE them.

Or they're really badly designed, my waist is not just below my nipples, so please don't put the belt loops there! Thanks.

So now I wear T shirts and cotton whatever they are pants when I want to lounge about the house. Actually it's better than a robe, really...there's something so schleppy about a guy sitting around in a robe with a fag hanging out of his mouth posting on the DL.

by Anonymousreply 77January 11, 2020 1:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 78January 11, 2020 1:53 PM

R72, I'm not R70, so I cannot speak for him, but seriously the pyjamas wouldn't suffice at table? Sounds as if you're from a very uptight family, or your house was terribly cold throughout the year.

Did your family dress for dinner each night as well in a suit or jacket? Sounds awfully stilted and old-fashioned. My home was somewhat formal, compared with most growing up, and as long as we were dressed, PJs, or ready for school, that was enough.

by Anonymousreply 79January 11, 2020 10:09 PM

R77 Shlubby too, might I add!

by Anonymousreply 80January 11, 2020 10:28 PM

of course OP. What else would you wear when the paperboy comes over to collect and you need a piece of clothing to accidentally come loose and reveal your tumescent cock?

by Anonymousreply 81January 11, 2020 10:54 PM

[quote]but seriously the pyjamas wouldn't suffice at table?

R79, now that you mention it, I don't remember being told not to wear pajamas to the table. I just automatically put on my robe to go downstairs. Maybe PJ's would have been fine ... but I do think the fact that it was a two-story house, with only bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs, created a strong separation - at least in my childish mind - between "public" space, like the living room or dining room, and "private space", i.e. the upstairs.

And, no, we didn't dress for dinner, except that a shirt was required. And no t-shirts at dinner (although they were fine at lunch). Bear in mind this was the 1960s; people were a bit more formal then, and t-shirts had not become the everyday uniform they are today. The white ones, at least, were still mostly considered underwear. This was not a stated rule. It was just understood; my father didn't wear a t-shirt to dinner, and so I didn't.

There's really no substitute for a soft, comfy, extremely warm bathrobe during winter.

What other garment is even more comfortable than wrapping yourself in the blanket from your bed, never wrinkles or rustles, warms you from neck to ankle (or head to ankle if it has a hood), and looks decent enough that you can open the door while wearing it? What, you're going to wear your winter parka instead?

R72: I didn’t grow up in the kind of family that had structured meals, or structured anything. My parents were not home much and even when they were, they were too hungover to bother with us. I actually didn’t even have pajamas until I was an adult...I slept in shorts and maybe a t-shirt. That’s probably why the formality of it feels so completely alien to me. Similarly, it never occurred to me until adulthood that owning more than one pair of shoes or sneakers was permissible. I had one of each even after I began supporting myself because I had always had one of each growing up. Funny how your reality is the only one to you until you are old enough to be independent.

by Anonymousreply 94January 12, 2020 8:46 PM

"Similarly, it never occurred to me until adulthood that owning more than one pair of shoes or sneakers was permissible."

When I was a kid, I was bought two pairs of pants and two pairs of shirts every year, no matter how fast I was outgrowing things. I objected at the time rather than accepting it as "reality", because even in grade school I could see that other kids were bought more clothes and were kept in things that fit.

Yes, even in grade school I was a jealous bitch!

Just because I'm not fully dressed, it doesn't mean my sartorial standards should drop.

r94, if it makes you feel any better, most kids (boys, at least) when I was growing up in the 70s had one pair of dress/school shoes, one pair of sneakers and a pair of snowboots. Shoes were expensive and kids' feet grow fast. Everyone in my middle class neighborhood would get new shoes at the start of the school year, either at the local, family-owned shoe store (where I got my Buster Browns when a wee tyke) or from the Sears or JC Penney catalog. I didn't have multiple pairs of shoes until I was out of college and working. However, in my adulthood I do have an affinity for sneakers, and have way too many. And golf shoes, too.

R115 - thank you for this! I think we must be close in age...I’m about to turn 55. I, too, developed an insatiable desire for sneakers when a much more fashionable friend pointed out that it was perfectly normal (in his eyes) to own pairs in several colors. From there it was a slippery slope, although fortunately my tastes are modest, at least. But I still feel vaguely guilty about owning so many pairs. :)
