I think he's growing out his hair, hippie-style: all one length. He probably just has it parted this way, and behind his ears to keep it out of his eyes/face until it's long enough to pull it back. From my own long-haired experience, there are few options at this length.

I suspect his hair is thinning / balding. The hair part in the middle is purposely zig-zagged. If he put a normal part down the middle, it would probably accentuate thin-ness. I think he has been putting hair plugs around his hairline.

You all must be MUCH older than 50, as long hair wasn't only popular with the original hippies, but in the 80s, 90s, and again since the man-bun trend, and facial hair. I have the same body type as him (smaller frame, shorter) and I can tell he's probably gained 5-10 pounds recently. That's nothing when you are tall, but when you are a smaller person it makes a difference. You cant even eat one cheeseburger without seeing it in your face the next day!
