Tasteful Friends: Teenage Goop and Mommy, Blythe Danner, Back in 1985

Look at how lovely and tasteful they both look! I think 14-year-old Gwynnie is wearing Laura Ashley. The very picture of proper Spence girl.

[quote]Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow at the Williamstown Theatre Festival cabaret benefit at Studio 54 in 1985.

I miss the 80s.

zzzzzzz

by Anonymousreply 1January 4, 2020 8:10 PM

The greater irony is that this elegant garden party of an event occurred at.... STUDIO 54.

by Anonymousreply 2January 4, 2020 8:11 PM

What the hell? How did I not know that Gwyneth grew up in a Big Love LDS community?

by Anonymousreply 3January 4, 2020 8:15 PM

She almost looks like Paris Hilton when she was younger. Like teenage Paris Hilton.

by Anonymousreply 4January 4, 2020 8:15 PM

Are you a gurl or a frau, OP?

& why on earth would that pic make you miss the AIDS era?

by Anonymousreply 5January 4, 2020 8:16 PM

I wonder how much of Goop's elitism and pretentiousness we can blame on Blythe Danner, a lot I'm thinking.

by Anonymousreply 6January 4, 2020 8:25 PM

I wonder that too, R6.

The word is “pretension,” you illiterate whore.

by Anonymousreply 8January 4, 2020 9:58 PM

Oh, how I would love to go back in time and slap the shit out of her.

by Anonymousreply 9January 4, 2020 10:09 PM

She’s clearly had a nose job.

by Anonymousreply 10January 4, 2020 10:14 PM

But she's always stayed true to her origins!

Laura Ashley dresses were so popular with fancy-shmancy girls back then, and they were so hilariously hideous. They were like shapeless sacks made out of chintz.

by Anonymousreply 12January 4, 2020 10:19 PM

R9 oh please just look at recent pictures and videos of her with no makeup — she very very clearly has not.

Girl’s got a schnoz, always has.

by Anonymousreply 13January 4, 2020 10:30 PM

She’s a good snake-oil salescritter. Harper’s Bazaar did a video of her and the whole thing is one big infomercial for GOOP slop.

Almost her whole beauty regimen is removing skin: first a dry body brush, and then a salt scalp scrub, and then a salt and oil body scrub, and then a chemical and manual facial exfoliator. Maybe she is a reptilian after all with all that extra skin to get rid of every day.

Back to the dungeon, girl!

NOW!

by Anonymousreply 15January 4, 2020 10:49 PM

Gwyn spent years lecturing the public through the media about the benefits of a macrobiotic diet. She credited her beauty and her superior health to the diet. Anyone who doesn’t eat macrobiotic is a fool! she said.

And then she announced that she has osteopoenia, a precursor to osteoporosis (for which her mother shills a drug), and she blamed the macrobiotic diet for causing it.

AND THEN she started a media company through which she tells people what choices to make about their health.

What a goofball. She has my least favorite look of any movie star, she’s so WASPy and plain, like a Carr’s table water cracker.

by Anonymousreply 17January 4, 2020 10:58 PM

[quote] Oh, how I would love to go back in time and slap the shit out of her.

Which one?

by Anonymousreply 18January 4, 2020 10:58 PM

“she’s so WASPy and plain, like a Carr’s table water cracker.”

Her father is descended from a Polish rabbi. Gwyneth Paltrowicz is such a WASP! 🙄

by Anonymousreply 19January 4, 2020 11:13 PM

I'll have you all know that I am the table water cracker in my family.

When I think of Blythe Danner I imagine her to be exactly as her Will and Grace character

by Anonymousreply 21January 5, 2020 5:36 AM

She looks mtf to me, and barely passing.

by Anonymousreply 22January 5, 2020 5:47 AM

When I think of Blythe Danner I think of the preparatory visit she paid to Ruth in Connecticut.

This IS a Tasteful Friends thread.

Does anyone know why the family moved from LA to New York?

Weren’t most if not all of Bruce’s shows in LA?

They moved to NY around ‘85, if I recall correctly.

[quote]Actress Blythe Danner, who most recently has appeared in the films “The Last Kiss,” “Meet the Fockers,” and “Meet the Parents” and on the TV show “Will & Grace,” has undergone a flurry of real-estate activities, selling her four-bedroom, 5,290-square-foot, 94-year-old homestead in Santa Monica, Calif.—which is the house where her daughter, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, grew up—for $8.6 million, unloading an an adjacent house for $2.1 million, and purchasing a prewar co-op apartment in New York City for $3.125 million. In a Big Time Listings exclusive, we can report that Danner, 64, recently sold the adjoining properties in Santa Monica to Jerome Dahan, who co-founded the well-known 7 For All Mankind designer jeans company, also known as Seven or Seven Jeans. Danner had shared their house at 304 21st Street (also known as 2020 Georgina Avenue) in Santa Monica, which was built in 1913, with her late husband Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002 of pneumonia during a battle with throat cancer. Paltrow and Danner had bought that house, which is on a double lot on a corner, since 1976. Then, in 1999, they bought the three-bedroom, 2,468-square-foot house next door at 316 21st Street, according to public records. Most recently, Danner has been renting that smaller house, which was built in 1948, to TV writer Susan Baskin, according to public records.

Truth in advertising, OP. We expected to see their not-so-humble abode ca. 1985, but all we got is a cheap 80s pap shot of them. Gah. Go away.

by Anonymousreply 26January 5, 2020 6:21 AM

[quote]Jake Paltrow(born 1975) lived in New York from 7 to 16 and returned again at 19.

[quote]Paltrow lived on this 92nd Street block until age 16. He says he doesn’t visit much now and doesn’t have fond memories of the apartment. In his youth, Paltrow was a loner, spending most Saturday nights watching B horror movies.

R25 that was much later (obviously) I’m talking about when they were kids. Goop started Spence in 7th grade; she went to some hippy dippy school in Santa Monica before that.

R27 interesting article (although they grew up in a TH not an apt). I love any mention of the Video room!! We were gold members — which means we got delivery, but in truth it was always so much more fun just to go. It was the best.

[quote]Just recently, Miss Danner turned down 'with great regret' an offer to star in a British Broadcasting Corporation production of 'Lady Astor,' because it would have meant a nine-month separation from her husband. 'I would have loved working with the B.B.C. and having the children go to English schools,' she said.

[quote]Their children, Gwyneth, who is 8 years old, and Jake, who is 5, are used to sudden separations and suitcase living. Uncertainty started with Gwyneth's birthplace, and obstetricians and hospitals had to be reserved on both coasts. Gwyneth chose California.

[quote]They like their house in Santa Monica, but 'the well water is polluted and you can't breathe the air,' Miss Danner said. 'I love New York,' she added

[quote]Meanwhile, the search for a home continues. They talk of someday, somewhere, building a dream house, 'an old barn with new wings, solar heating and windmills.' But Miss Danner, now on vacation, spends most of her time looking for a cooperative apartment on the Upper East Side. 'It's almost a religious crusade for her,' said Mr. Paltrow

R31 I think she is more what they refer to as a handsome woman.

by Anonymousreply 33January 5, 2020 6:11 PM

Gwyoop is almost a carbon copy of her mother. It’s totally ridiculous to say one is a natural beauty and the other is unattractive. Gwyneth is also a superior actor. Blythe is funny and charismatic; I’ve never seen her in a serious role.

I love many of Gwyneth’s movies and in great part because of her presence and her performances. It is difficult nowadays to appreciate her knowing her real-life personality is so gross. She’s played so many characters so well. She should hire a good writer to rewrite her Gwyneth character as down to Earth and unpretentious and just act as herself for the rest of her life.

Blythe has lovely bone structure and was very pretty. Especially in her 50’s and even 60’s. Gwyneth does not have her looks at all. I also think her constant starvation diets and odd exercise routines have prematurely aged her.

by Anonymousreply 36January 5, 2020 6:30 PM

Blythe more or less always the same (pleasantly pretty) whereas Gwyneth based on the angle you catch her or whether or not she’s wearing makeup can either look horrible (way worse than her her mother) or beautiful (way prettier than her mother). There are certain women who are just like that (I am, so can relate), and I’m not sure what makes a person like that. J Lo as others here have pointed out is another example of someone who looks so much worse without makeup and vice versa, and depending on the angle you catch her — they obviously couldn’t look less alike, so I’m trying to find a consistency but haven’t been able to figure it out.

As for Gwyneth she really does look 50 percent like her mother and 50 percent like her father. Sometimes I see much more of one than the other.

by Anonymousreply 37January 5, 2020 10:48 PM

Gwynnie looks like a boy in a dress in OP’s pic.
