80s kid so most 80s music is super nostalgic in that way only music from your childhood can be. first pop song I ever liked/noticed/wanted to hear again was Nikita by Elton John.

^^ although that’s more pop, isn’t it? I loved The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees and Kate Bush and The Clash.
Not sure how you’d classify those, but whatever. It’s good music I love to this day. P

That poster is defying the parameters of the thread. Thus the 'why just British, OP?' response.
Team defier.

I was joking R7, it was a reference to an earlier comment.
Fuckin' humourless.
R6 Wild Boys is still one of the sexiest songs ever to me.

I mean yeah, or I genuinely think calling someone a limey means you're a racist. You interpret it how you will, you po-faced tedium generator, R22.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 4, 2020 2:43 AM |
R4 you brought back great memories. I loved "Nikita". Beautiful melody, great background vocals by George Michael. Elton's second-best video...I can still see that girl's face from the video...haunting.

[quote]Wait.. Bruce, Tom Petty and KISS are British?
Well, to be fair, Tome Petty and the Heartbreakers were big in the UK before they finally made it big in their home country.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 4, 2020 2:54 AM |
Lol, TOM, not Tome.

Mekons with the mid-decade Thatcher/Reagan blues.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 4, 2020 3:23 AM |
There was very little actual rock in the 80's. It's the worst decade of music ever.

I love British 80s music for the same reason that r4 described, but it is definitely not rock. It was referred to as Brit Pop by someone on KROQ, and I agree. It was fun, creative pop music, not guitar-driven rock n roll.

R33 I’m inclined to agree. I’ve never liked 80s music but there were some good moments. I loved the mid 70s to early 80s. I thought the British punk movement brought a really healthy period in music. Record companies were braver then, eager to sign unknowns. Of course it was about making money trying to find the next big thing, but the consequence was that there were some really good, interesting sounds around. It wasn’t to last , though.

If Culture Club had kept the original concept (a bluesy, goth-reggae amalgam) they would have had some longevity. But George got too drag queeny and people weren't ready for that.

R5 - Whaaaa?
Stop it. Think before you spew.
