Why didn't she have a better career? She proved herself an excellent child actor in "The Innocents", and was also fantastic in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". I recently watched "And Soon the Darkness", which was a great atmospheric thriller, and she gave a solid performance in that as well. Things seem to have gone off the rails in the '70s and she somehow landed in exploitation/television hell before retiring at age 31. She was both talented and pretty. What happened?
Melissa Sue Anderson stole her thunder.

No offense to Melissa Sue Anderson, but she was never really a film actress; she started out in television and later tried to transition to features, but it never really worked. Pamela, on the other hand, started out in film and had earned a fair amount of acclaim at a young age. She won a National Board of Review Award for "Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," and was nominated for a BAFTA when she was 19. It seemed like she had a good career ahead of her, but things went inexplicably sideways in the 1970s.

Her audio commentary on “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” DVD was interesting and revealing. Franklin stated that in England, actors could go back and forth between TV and movies, and not have it affect their film careers, but once Franklin started doing it in the US in the 1970s, her film career opportunities diminished. A breaking point came when she was referred to as “the girl” by a TV director — as in, “the girl needs to move over there.” By then she’d already had a child and her interest in her career was dwindling anyway, so it was easy for her to step away.
She was terrific in “The Innocents” and outstanding in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” — she really should have been Oscar-nominated for that one.
Was thinking about Franklin recently, because one of the very last things I remember seeing her in was an episode of “Fantasy Island” where she co-starred with Michele Lee, Hilarie Thompson, and the recently-deceased Sue Lyon.

Her performance in The Innocents is truly one of the most disturbing child performances ever; it is such a creepy, perverse film for a host of reasons, but the acting all around was fantastic.

My favorite was The Legend Of Hell House. Scared the hell out of me when I was a child.

Gosh, Deborah Kerr was so beautiful. You don't see people that gorgeous anymore.

She came across like a humorless scold. Kim Darby too.

I think she married some studio head so she probably didn't need to work.

I always get her mixed up with Pamela Sue Martin.

I like Kerr but lots of actresses today are more beautiful than she ever was. She looks just okay next to someone like Charlize Theron or Halle Berry.

Amy Adams before Amy Adams was Amy Adams.

She had a striking face, but as she aged it became clear it wasn't exactly pretty. Her head was very small.
Child actors rarely grow into beautiful adults--Elizabeth Taylor and Winona Ryder are among the few exceptions.

Just saw her play a killer last week on an old episode of "Barnaby Jones." She was quite effective in the role.

A fine actress, but that short 70s hairdo she sported really did her no favors (nor anyone else who had it!)

I saw her decades ago in an episode of Police Story where she played a rape victim. All these years, I still remember her performance. She was so touching and when she gained the strength to testify against her attackers, it was an amazing moment.
