One of the weirdest things I've ever come across: Icelanders have puffin rescues. They also roast puffins as a national dish
[quote]The Atlantic puffin forms part of the national diet in Iceland, where the species does not have legal protection. Puffins are hunted by a technique called "sky fishing", which involves catching the puffins in a large net as they dive into the sea. Their meat is commonly featured on hotel menus. The fresh heart of a puffin is eaten raw as a traditional Icelandic delicacy.[28] On the small Icelandic island of Grimsey as many as 200 puffins can be caught in a single morning

Why do so many iddle widdle baby animals have enormous ears?
by Anonymous | reply 104 | January 4, 2020 12:12 AM |
In the case of Fennec Foxes, they normally have large ears even when fully grown.
I suspect large ears in defenseless baby animals was an adaptation to enhance hearing for predator avoidance.

Baby hummingbirds the size of navy beans, in their sake-cup nest!
I've only seen a hummingbird nest once. A hummingbird started zooming around and around me, flying really close and aggressively, instead of flying away to attack another hummingbird as they usually do. I realized why when I glanced to the side, and saw an eensy little nest stuck on a branch, only about three feet away from me. Unbelievably tiny and fragile... and me without a camera!

An old Sierra Club hiker once told me "Don't be afraid of bears, be afraid of bear cubs!".
Because the black bears of California aren't going to attack an adult human, unless you get between them and their cubs.

Baby axalotl. Fish or amphibian?
"The axolotl (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl), also known as the Mexican walking fish, is an amphibian that’s native to the waters near Mexico City. These creatures have a rare ability. They can stay in their larval state their entire lives. While other amphibians grow up and leave the water to live on dry land, most axolotls stay babies their entire lives.
Wait. If axolotls live their entire lives in water, then aren’t they fish? Some might think so, but that’s not true! In rare cases, axolotls will mature. These axolotls leave the water and live on land. Because of their ability to grow up and leave the water, experts classify axolotls as amphibians. When axolotls do grow up, we call them Mexican salamanders."
