Have you been there? What's it like? Are the people really as friendly as they say? I always thought it was a sort of backwoods place full of rednecks, am I wrong?
I like Newfoundland the dog.

Bump
The non stop ads for Newfoundland and Labrador CBC is running make me want to go.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 20, 2020 12:34 AM |
It's confusing. St. John's is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador and its largest city. But there's also a St. John in New Brunswick.

I got Screeched-in at O'Reillys on George Street in St. John's. Lots of fun.

"The non stop ads for Newfoundland and Labrador CBC is running make me want to go. "
Me too!
But then, I'm sheltering in place except for working in a hospital, and I'm so desperate for travel that I'd accept a trip to Branson, Mo. just to be somewhere else.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 20, 2020 12:58 AM |
It looks cold.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 20, 2020 12:59 AM |
I think Newfoundland would be a lot more beautiful than Branson, R6.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 20, 2020 1:01 AM |
I want to see L'anse aux meadows
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 20, 2020 1:02 AM |
If you want to see rednecks, OP, go to Calgary, Alberta. That shithole is filled with racists and rednecks.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 20, 2020 1:05 AM |
me too, R6. I'd go anywhere at this point. Except Oklahoma.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 20, 2020 1:07 AM |
That's the Viking village, R9??
Oh, I know, R10. I'd never go to Alberta.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 20, 2020 1:09 AM |
I had a Newfie colleague. He was a hoot. Funny in a laid back, goofy way.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 20, 2020 1:12 AM |
Did he have an accent and say B'y a lot, R13?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 20, 2020 1:13 AM |
Their dialect! It's sooooo distinct. It's such a trip cause you can hear the European ancestry in their accents it's so cool. Canada seems like such a strange yet familiar land to me, like a fusion of America and wherever else y'all came from before you plundered and raped this earth, which you're paying for by the way, why you think yo asses stuck inside cause y'all fuuuuucked UP the earth!
Anyway, looks like a lovely place I'd deign to habituate ANY DAY, ALEX[ITALIC]SIS[/ITALIC]!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 20, 2020 1:13 AM |
Better not read Annie Proux's work if you want to visit. They're pretty laid back, but very clannish, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 20, 2020 1:15 AM |
Laid back and clannish.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 20, 2020 1:16 AM |
They still do mummering there. Strange tradition.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 20, 2020 1:18 AM |
Ghastly, with racist undertones.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 20, 2020 1:21 AM |
No travel is allowed from the US to Canada. If you want to get in illegally, drive to the top of Maine and cut through the woods.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 20, 2020 1:21 AM |
And a CHRISTMAS tradition, no less!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 20, 2020 1:21 AM |
[quote]drive to the top of Maine and cut through the woods.
That a euphemism?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 20, 2020 1:23 AM |
It is not, R19.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 20, 2020 1:23 AM |
R17, now that's just weird. Done intentionally?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 20, 2020 1:29 AM |
I visited two summers ago . . . my neighbor here in Florida inherited the family home outside of St. John's and I was her guest. Beautiful countryside, very green, lots or ocean coves, bays, and inlets. I felt it was like Ireland, Maine, and Cape Code were rolled into one place. Food was mostly exceptional, especially the seafood. Lots of organic choices of meats and produce. Good beer. I found the locals very open and friendly. Worthwhile destination, I would go back.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 20, 2020 1:33 AM |
How is mummering in Newfoundland racist, R19? It's not the same as the shit that goes on in Philly, not even close.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 20, 2020 1:34 AM |
Just go see "Come From Away." That is, when theaters are back in business.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 20, 2020 4:25 AM |
r14 Yes, he did. It was charming.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 20, 2020 5:21 AM |
It's awful. Go to oldfoundland first.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 20, 2020 5:59 AM |

Stupid thing I've ever heard and I'm from Maine, though now I live in Oregon.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 20, 2020 6:01 AM |
St. John's is in Newfoundland, Saint John is in New Brunswick.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 20, 2020 6:39 AM |
r32 meet r3
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 20, 2020 6:43 AM |
Not quite, R33. The Saint in Saint John is never abbreviated. The St. in St. John's is never spelled out.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 20, 2020 7:01 AM |
The 1/2 time difference is so weird.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 20, 2020 7:18 AM |
It is still Saint whether you abbreviate it or not..

I went to Newfoundland in college. My boyfriend's mom was born and raised in NF. We went in the summer and it was cold. It was in the low 50s during the day and the relatives were all excited it was "so warm". They went to the beach in shorts
That was a really warm day for them. The high temperatures (in July & August) are 69 degrees, but the average is 53. They have 3 months where they don't have freezing temperatures (July, August, September).
They can still have nights where it goes down to 32 or below in June

I would love to visit NF. My favorite trip ever was to Nova Scotia, just south of it. We rented a car and toured all around the main island and Cape Breton as well as Prince Edward island. It was so beautiful and interesting. We took a boat trip to the Bird Islands where we saw puffins, bald eagles, and all manner of sea birds. Saw orca whales on the way out there. There was wonderful local music, super fiddle playing, and good food. Lobster rolls, etc.
On Cape Breton there is a huge lake called Bras D'Or that reminded me of Lake Tahoe without zillions of people. The whole place reminded me of what the US might have been like 70 years ago.
The winters are long though, and the summer was pleasant, NF does sound a lot cooler but I like remote places.
