How on EARTH did Anyone Think George Michael was STRAIGHT?
I had never seen Wham!’s video for “Last Christmas” before. In it, George arrives to a skiing trip with one girlfriend then falls in love with and runs off with his friend’s girlfriend.
He’s so damn nelly and prissy!! Did everyone really think he was straight, or were they just in on the joke?
GURL!!

Because effeminate men exist. Femininity and sexuality do not go hand in hand. He is also not American. In different places certain behaviors arent seen as "gay", like in Italy where it is very normal for straight men to be affectionate with each other and even kiss on the cheek or lips when saying hello, or bye etc.
And back then homosexuality was not on the mind of anyone that was not gay themselves. There was not gay stuff everywhere. People only knew major stereotypes to be "gay"

A lot of male pop stars in the early 80s were very effeminate. Then again, Wake Me Up Before You Gogo was VERY gay.

I knew he was gay when I saw this video. Christ, the lyrics alone practically scream, "I suck dick!"

What R4 said. It was just a very different time. In the late 70's up till the mid 80's, long hair and obvious makeup was very common on male musicians. Most were thin and lanky.

Boy George used to 'Out' him practically every week.
Everyone knew.

Boy George made him look somewhat butch by comparison.

I was 10 years old when “Last Christmas” came out, and my mom still remembers me telling her that “the blonde guy looks like Princess Diana and he does not really like the girl”.
I guess you could call it early gaydar.

Meanwhile, it took the Pet Shop Boys to revive the career of one of the only white women who had any business covering Motown: Dusty Springfield.

Easy -- Hell, my grandmother thought LIberace was straight. People will believe what they want. A lot of "Christians " think Trump is one of them.

I still get gaydar readings from [italic]Silver Spoons[/italic] reruns even when Franklyn Seales isn't in a scene!

Sorry, my inner bitch can’t let this go:
[quote]In it, George arrives to a skiing trip with one girlfriend then falls in love with and runs off with his friend’s girlfriend.
Do you even know the words to the song? It pretty much explains that the friend’s (Andrew) girlfriend was HIS girlfriend LAST CHRISTMAS, not the other way around. Those scenes of him with her are flashbacks. Notice the brooch he gives her? Notice it’s on Andrew’s lapel at dinner? She GAVE IT AWAY!!
Time to take my meds…

I assumed George Michael was straight because he never informed the public any differently until the LA incident.

Lots of British pop artists of the time had highly stylized hair, wore make-up, and dressed very fashionably.

Did not Julie Anne Friedman once accuse her husband Nick Rhodes, of Duran Duran, of wearing more make-up than she did?

In the late 90s, my mom would watch this decorating show on TV. Sorry for the language, but the host was absolutely, 100% flaming. One day, the host had a woman as a guest. My dad walked in the room and said "Oh, is that his wife?"
And this was in the late 90s. Imagine the cluelessness going on in the 80s.

Somehow, there are even people who apparently think ROBBIE FUCKING WILLIAMS is straight, and he's a total, screaming nelly queen with lace doilies in his bedroom that would have embarrassed his grandmother.
Ditto, for Tim Tebow.

The 80's was the age of the new romantics, almost everyone wear tons of make up and very questionable clothes. George was not even near to be the most obvious gay between them

Remember that not even Boy George—or Elton John or Dusty Springfield—would admit to "all the way gay" back then. When Culture Club first hit it big in the US, Boy George was giving lame-ass interviews along the lines of "Sometimes I fancy girls and sometimes I fancy boys."

How? Many people believe what they want to believe, not what they either suspect or realize is the truth. it's one of the deficiencies far too many people have. And it's only getting worse with each generation. I am constantly amazed at the number of people I know who simply can't face the truth when it doesn't live up to their expectations. So they make up their own truths and lie themselves into believing them.

I often think of a series of interviews GM did on BBC Radio 1, soonish after his sensational performance at the Mercury Memorial Show. Star quality indeed, he was at the absolute top of his game.
The DJ brought up ambiguous sexuality; GM said he'd kept on hearing reports of a gay expose about him, but there was nothing to expose. With cool ease he dismissed the entire topic.
Cut of course to getting caught cruising in LA, coming out, then going on a major chat show to talk about it all more openly than anyone ever had before.
When the tabloids broke the story it turned out GM had been cottaging for years and years - there were a few (yes) first-hand encounter stories. But till he broke the dam, GM remained behind that offhand dismissal, so that the world could think what it wanted, and record sales wouldn't be negatively impacted.

Well, if Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran could be straight, I suppose it wasn't too hard to believe George Michael was, too.

I had very curly hair in high school, when Wham! was big. I went to the beauty salon to have it chemically straightened and it looked just like George’s (at my request). That first day at school with the new hairdo was as close to feeling like a celebrity that I’ll ever know.
Then the humidity came and it was a frizzy mess again.
