Caveman face.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 17, 2019 7:28 PM |
Well, if he's said he doesn't want to watch or listen to his own performances and it's widely known, it's rather rude of them to do this.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 17, 2019 7:30 PM |
r2 You get to request this of Terry Gross when you're Meryl Streep, not Adam fucking Driver. He should be careful because a diva reputation is the last thing he needs right now.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 17, 2019 7:33 PM |
He sounds like a mental case.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 17, 2019 7:37 PM |
Yeah. His career is already in the toilet.

She’s not pretty enough to act ugly
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 17, 2019 7:40 PM |
So Adam Driver gets nauseous when he sees himself on the screen. Me too.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 17, 2019 7:41 PM |
He looks like Keanu Reeves ugly retarded cousin.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 17, 2019 8:10 PM |
What a neurotic mess. These shows have to play a sample of the artists' work to give the audience a reference. You just have to let go of your perfection at some point.
All these hangups make me think Adam Driver would be way too neurotic to fuck a guy. Pity.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 17, 2019 8:13 PM |
OP = Joaquin Phoenix
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 17, 2019 8:14 PM |

His career is white-hot right now. He may get the Oscar next year.

[quote]Well, if he's said he doesn't want to watch or listen to his own performances and it's widely known, it's rather rude of them to do this.
They knew he didn't want to listen to the clip which is why they told him when to take his headphones off so he wouldn't have to endure it. He could have even stepped out of the to studio if he didn't want to see the reactions. To ditch as if it was a personal attack is ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 17, 2019 8:17 PM |
In fairness, the musical number from MARRIAGE STORY was cheesey.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 17, 2019 8:19 PM |

Terry Gross is now trending on Twitter because of this story.

I hear he is in the running for the part of "Karen", in "Karen! The Musical."
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 17, 2019 8:27 PM |
R29. No. Hollywood is full of too many assholes for this to even rate as anything noteworthy. Besides, Phoenix walked out on an interview for his movie too.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 17, 2019 8:28 PM |
Remember Russell Crowe was widely expected to win the Oscar for A Beautiful Mind until a backstage tantrum at the BAFTAs made its way to the press and destroyed his campaign. Denzel Washington won for Training Day instead.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 17, 2019 8:28 PM |
He disrespected Terry! Girl, you in danger!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 17, 2019 8:29 PM |
His job as an actor is to promote his work and be interviewed, and it is just absolutely standard that every actor who gets interviewed has clips shown of his/her work.
It is pure prima donna behavior to have this ridiculous reaction. He needs to behave like a professional. He would not have dared do this were he not in demand right now as a lead actor--five years ago he was honored to be interviewed and have his work shown on NPR.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 17, 2019 8:30 PM |
Wasted. Your ridicule. R31
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 17, 2019 8:30 PM |
That ain’t diva behaviour, darlings - that’s primadonna shit at best. Take it from one who knows. x
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 17, 2019 8:37 PM |
Of course people on Twitter are defending Driver by saying he has anxiety and NPR were cruelly taunting someone with a mental illness despite Driver never once saying he has anxiety or any disorder.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 17, 2019 8:38 PM |
I completely agree with what are R36 wrote & its too bad because his previous interview with Terry Gross made him seem like an interesting person (some actors just seem boring as hell, like former Mr. Jennifer Aniston Justin Whatever). To be fair, it didn't say he left in a huff - throwing his headphones, storming out or any such thing, which is what Phoenix did - it could be that he's genuinely that neurotic. It kind of makes you appreciate someone like Brad Pitt - probably not the sharpest tool in the shed - who is honest about himself without giving too much away and ultimately makes himself more likable and human.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 17, 2019 8:38 PM |
So if he's nominated for an Oscar next year, what's he gonna do when they play clips from the nominees on awards night? Spring from his seat and run screaming from the Pavillion?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 17, 2019 8:41 PM |
This is easily explained. Driver is used to seeing his face, such that it is, in the mirror, which is the reverse of what everyone else sees.
When he sees what WE see, it must be even more horrifying, hence the Diva behavior.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 17, 2019 8:45 PM |
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. We don't know what may have happened behind the scenes. These PR things are set up in advance by others on their respective teams and it may have been explained that they wouldn't play clips, etc. especially after they did it the first time. I can easily see them saying one thing to Driver's publicist only to then say, "just remove your headphones" as he sat down to do the interview. In any case, he was not expecting whatever happened and felt uncomfortable and decided to leave. Nobody likes to feel a "gotcha" moment especially if it was made clear to them that he doesn't like/want something to occur. It wouldn't surprise me if they just went ahead and did it anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 17, 2019 8:53 PM |
Love Terry Gross and what PBS did to her after the Bill O'Reilly stuff is still unforgivable.
Terry is still here and I believe Mr. O'Reilly is podcasting from his basement.
As for Mr. Driver, here's a tip:
The answer to being really unattractive isn't to make yourself even uglier.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 17, 2019 8:55 PM |
Wasn't he in the Marines? Didn't they prepare him for stuff like this in Tora Bora?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 17, 2019 8:56 PM |
He didn't seem to have problem at this year's Oscars when he was nominated for BlacKkKlansman.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 17, 2019 8:59 PM |
Terry Gross is a cunt for doing what she did.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 17, 2019 9:01 PM |
Team Terry. If you can’t handle an interview, Adam, you’re in the wrong line of work.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 17, 2019 9:02 PM |
What's this ugly motherfucker going to do when they show a clip at the Oscars? Get up and walk out? I hate these holier than though asshats.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 17, 2019 9:06 PM |
When they see themselves on the big screen, some actors get nauseous and leave the theatre, while other actors immediately start masturbating. There's no one right response.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 17, 2019 9:25 PM |
He sounds neurotic in a very tiresome way. But you could probably say that about a lot of actors.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 17, 2019 9:32 PM |
Joaquin at least has “earned” his diva behavior with four decades worth of work behind him; Driver has not.

You'd have think she didn't ask him for his preferred pronouns before the interview.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 17, 2019 9:56 PM |
It's just ACTING for fuck sake, it's not like he is watching himself perform brain surgery. Get over yourself, Mr. Prisspot.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 18, 2019 2:17 AM |
He doesn't want it this year. The Oscar. It's too much, too soon. He's been pulling the unfriendly act toward the media all throughout awards season, unless his team and publicist sit him down and read him the riot act (and he listens), the nom will still be there but he's nowhere near a win. A he should be a frontrunner, make no mistake. Him and Phoenix.
Between Driver's diva touchiness and Phoenix's uninspiring campaign, I wonder if this leaves the door open for a dark horse like Banderas, Bale or Pryce to sneak in the back door. Banderas has been campaigning steadily, the Academy likes that. Very charming.

Which could explain why he looks a little like Keanu and has that nice hair and nice eye shape.

R62 Dream on. This is Joaquins year. He won't even have to campaign for it and frankly it's expected that he will not campaign but his retiscence is affectionately joked about.
With Joaquin they appease the comic book crowd, silence the critics who call them out of touch all and pander to the younger masses all while not actually selling out since this isn't really a comic book movie, it has none the low brow qualities the academy hates about those movies and Joaquin is the most overdue male Oscar (after Leo was taken off) . Not even a MeToo scandal can keep Joaquin from that Oscar win. You'll see.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | December 18, 2019 3:42 AM |
[quote]It's obvious this is to get his name out there for Oscar.
I'd imagine this would hurt his chances...
I know Adam hates to hear himself, but I don't understand why he needed to storm out, especially if, as the story says, they at least came to some sort of agreement where he could remove his headphones. Apparently they played the song during a break, and then he left... he couldn't just leave the room and temporarily isolate himself? Did he feel insulted? Or is his aversion to experiencing himself perform so deep that he had almost phobic/psychological response to the situation. Either way, it's not a good look, and it's unbecoming of an actor who many would have argued was the frontrunner this year.
Also... like... I don't know... to do it to Terry Gross seems like... well, if it were Howard Stern or something it'd be weird but whatever, weird stuff happens on Stern and it's all part of the environment. With Gross it's different... her interviews are great and well respected, and it's definitely the type of demographic they'll want to be pushing the film to.
He should really fucking deal with this... I don't think he can have his cake and eat it too at the level his career's at now. He clearly wants this, and these types of interviews come with the territory. Handle your shit.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | December 18, 2019 3:52 AM |
And he’s not even that good looking.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | December 18, 2019 3:54 AM |
"What's this ugly motherfucker going to do when they show a clip at the Oscars?"
I thought they don't show clips at the Oscars anymore, except maybe for the Best Picture nominees. You see, some of them get more applause than others, and that is considered unfair. Seems to me I haven't seen clips of the actors nominated for their performances in years.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | December 18, 2019 3:55 AM |
He looks like if Billy Bear from 48 hours had a brother like Patrick Swayze did.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | December 18, 2019 4:02 AM |
If he thinks his voice/look is that painful, wouldn’t it be charitable to get out of the business, and stop inflicting it on others?
I mean, there is a major disconnect there!
by Anonymous | reply 85 | December 18, 2019 4:03 AM |
And this is shocking... why? He went from the dodging deployment in the military immediately to being Lena Dunham's muse. Already he's proved himself to be a combination of the two worst types of people in the world. Is it so surprising he's an asshole?
He's not talented enough or well known enough or attractive enough to act this way. He got cast in Marriage Story for the same reason Johansson did: both were actors from wildly successful blockbuster franchises who were hired to bring in a bigger audience. His career's shit, and he's probably done beyond guest roles and supporting roles in VOD flicks once his Star Wars trilogy ends. Don't worry, I'm sure he'll get a payback when they make another trilogy in ten or so years and he plays an older version of Kylo Ren "shockingly back from the dead".
by Anonymous | reply 86 | December 18, 2019 4:11 AM |
Wow, The Oscars this year are possibly the most pathetic yet. The Academy's been a joke for over a decade but this year's a new low. The two biggest tickets for Best Picture so far are a Batman movie and yet another movie about two straight white people getting a divorce starring two of Disney's hottest livestock and produced by Netflix. This is what's being presented as the peak of American cinema. People barely even watch anymore, and those that do watch it ironically to laugh at the mess of a host they've hired (let me guess, it's going to be another Late Night host this year). I'm done. It's a mess. The Oscars is now the Lindsay Lohan of award shows.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | December 18, 2019 4:17 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 18, 2019 4:43 AM |
Apparently, Terry played Patti's "Being Alive" and then starting joyfully singing along with it, and that's when Driver bolted.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | December 18, 2019 4:45 AM |
Truth R87. I'm not that old but I'm done watching the Oscars. I love Joaquim and if he wins, that's too bad and well deserved. He's a freaky actor, he's never quite real in any performance but he gives mesmerizing performances. Takes it all so seriously for a guy who never manages to be the character completely. I like Renee too and hope that she wins. She's a great versatile actress who does showy bits AND becomes completely immersed in character. But she can't look or sound like anyone but herself. She's kind of Shirley MacLaine.
The Oscars are the last stop on a long journey of award shows that I guess were always meaningless, but now feel like they have no meaning. There's something lacking. I'm getting older too. But it's not that simple. I think Driver is terrific in Story of Divorce, I watched it last night. He might win. But what happened to some charm or humor or real emotion along the way. Even Sean Penn charm. To not give a fuck is a real stance. But he cared about winning. The Oscars have lost something essential to their prestige. The Golden Globes feel more important. And the winners are in their fourth best dress with the least rehearsed speech there. And TV is better than film now. A Marriage Story is high class stuff, but way too dull to sit through in a movie theater.
I haven't seen Antonio Banderas since I was 15, alone in my bedroom. Maybe he deserves the Oscar? Who was he pretending to be? Olivia Colman was terrible in Queen Anne's legs last year and is even worse in The Crown. But the Broadchurch lovers gave HER an Oscar. Crazy. What a weird thing that Academy is. Much better to blow the Hollywood Foreign Press.
Emma Stone deserved her Oscar. Yes she did. So we can argue. But I am done watching.

They shouldn't have shown him his clip if he doesn't watch his work.
That said, all actors are crazy.
Even the nicest ones can erupt into a childish tantrum at any given moment. They only know how to be in a relationship with one person -- themselves and it's a dysfunctional relationship.
It's fun to meet them, but you can't ever really get to know them. Or maybe you do. You can't be friends with them. They don't know how.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 18, 2019 4:59 AM |
This is incredibly immature bratty behavior. And to treat Terry Gross that way?! Everybody loves Terry Gross.
Not a good look Driver. The praise is going to his head, he thinks he can behave however he wants and the world will cater to him. Pity.

He didn't have to watch anything - he was in a different studio. Driver was in NY while Gross was in Philadelphia. They were connected onair.

Watch the movie R108. He's great. It's good. Laura Dern gives one look that makes you yearn for less cinema verite, and then later you get it from the main characters. A bit yuck. The chick from Airplane is in it and she's great. Why isn't she in more things? It's all good. Have you never seen this dude before? He's way better looking in Sharp Objects with Amy Adams. Driver is successful because he reads Jewish (even though he’s not) without being too Jewish. So a lot of filmmakers, who are white Jewish men, cast him as their surrogate onscreen. Hollywood Jews are self-loathing in that way. Look at Adrien Brody, who won an Oscar and has pretty much disappeared. Too Jewish looking for Hollywood.
Similarly, goyim like Spike Lee cast Adam Driver to play Jews when they went someone who can play Jewish without being too Jewish.

Adrien Brody is gorgeous compared to Adam Driver. And he has an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | December 18, 2019 10:57 AM |
Adrien Brody is gorgeous, period. And very talented.
His lack of good, high-profile roles post-Oscar is mystifying to me.

It's time he went back to standing on an Easter Island hill.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | December 18, 2019 12:19 PM |
He gives such an astonishing performance in Marriage Story that I will allow him anything at this point. I mean, I like Terry Gross, but to explicitly ignore a request to not play clips (which they easily could have inserted in post) is just asshole behavior and it’s not journalism. And to play him SINGING in one of his most unguarded moments on film, which he’s obviously uncomfortable doing, is really doubling down on asshole. This is Terry’s fail here. He’s a terrific actor and is going to beat overhyped Joaquin for the Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | December 18, 2019 1:04 PM |
Am I the only one who thought Marriage Story was dull as shit?
by Anonymous | reply 123 | December 18, 2019 2:14 PM |
No I tuned out halfway. I liked this movie when it was called Annie Hall.
The problem with monoculture in Hollywood is that we're forever going to be fed bitter break up roman a clefs about Jewish directors and shiksa actresses.

[quote] He went from the dodging deployment in the military immediately to being Lena Dunham's muse.
He didn't dodge deployment. He was seriously injured and honorably discharged. I actually think he carries a huge chip on his shoulder in regards to not serving, which is why he's so strange and intense in his work.

R127. I still think it was a bit extreme to walk out. The so called affront is just not that serious.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | December 18, 2019 3:39 PM |
R124, I haven’t seen this movie so I don’t know about the characters, but Adam Driver is not Jewish and Scarlett Johansson is.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | December 18, 2019 3:49 PM |
The characters in Marriage Story are based on director Noah Baumbach and his divorce from Jennifer Jason Leigh.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | December 18, 2019 3:51 PM |
Gross made Charlize Theron cry on air the other day. She is a typical pig journalist. Don't feed the narcissistic beast.

by Anonymous | reply 135 | December 18, 2019 3:59 PM |
Theron was discussing how her mother shot and killed her father in elf defense. Although Gross asked her if it was okay to discuss. The interview was sordid.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | December 18, 2019 4:09 PM |
Theron agreed to speak about it and Gross offers every guest the opportunity to edit anything out of the tape that they, before airing, decide they regret having shared.
Theron explained that she’s been in therapy about it all and I think her decision to go there is a result of her attempting to stop repressing her trauma. Frankly, what was shared raised more questions than it answered, The timing of his shooting as it coincided with her going to Italy for the modeling gig and her mother making her leave the scene of the crime both made me even more convinced that she was the one who really pulled the trigger. I, also, think Tarantino is pretty obviously the director who rubbed her knee.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | December 18, 2019 4:31 PM |
I just wanted to add that her complete lack of anger towards her mother for, supposedly, murdering her father is more a smoking gun that she is the one who really killed him than her suddenly leaving the country immediately afterward and her mother sending her to the neighbors for an hour so she could stage the murder scene.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | December 18, 2019 4:36 PM |
Charlize Theron has talked about that story many times in the past. In print interviews and even on Oprah. She praises her mother. And yes, it does sound suspicious.

There may have been a lapse in understanding on how to deal with the clips. Driver was in NPR's New York studio while Gross is in Philly. The NY engineer probably didn't cue him to take off the headphones. Either way he still overreacted.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | December 18, 2019 5:23 PM |

Ruffalo and Gyllenhaal have about half as many years working on screen as Phoenix does, Jake’s City Slickers cameo notwithstanding. Branagh (seriously, Branagh?!) hasn’t delivered an awards worthy performance in decades. Dafoe is indeed overdue.

Defoe deserves the Best Actor award this year for his performance in The Lighthouse. But, because Disney owns ABC which runs The Oscars and Adam is Disney's cumslut, he'll probably win. Yay.

I agree with the posters who say this was to keep his name in the mix. There's nothing negative about this at all - it's Driver's I'm Still Here moment.
As for trigggering, erm, Marriage Story was extremely triggering. Put me in a foul mood all day.
Lastly, it's Joaquin's year. Over $1B in tickets sold. All you have to do is say "Joker" and viewers will turn up (just like they did for the abysmal movie). Driver is already an also-ran and I don't think any voters will "enjoy" watching Marriage Story. It will fade from the scene pretty quickly. Most of Hollywood has been divorced, at least once. No one needs to relive that unpleasantness.

How is he different from Justin Long and, if there isn't much difference, can I just continue to treat them as the same person, as I have until now?
For instance, when I saw The Force Awakens, I was very annoyed that the guy whose eyes were cut out in Jeepers Creepers was the new Darth Vader type guy.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | December 18, 2019 8:50 PM |
He's like a foot taller than Justin Long.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | December 18, 2019 8:59 PM |
Justin Long is better looking. That doesn't mean that Justin Long is good looking, since we're talking in comparison to Adam Driver, which sets the bar very low; but he is unquestionably better looking.

I'm not familiar with this actor's work (I don't think I've seen anything he's done) but he has a very intense, interesting look. I'd really like to see him in "Marriage Story." As for this incident, I think it is probably blown all out of proportion, as stories like this usually are. I really don't think it's a big deal, and especially not what could be called "DIVA BEHAVIOR." I've heard of much worse.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | December 19, 2019 12:28 AM |
When I first saw him on film, I thought he was the ugliest thing ever...I think it was star wars, I hated it.
Then I saw him in more films, I still thought he was super ugly and every scene he was in, I was just thinking "what a fucking ugly dude, what is he doing in movies?" His acting is average.
Now he sings in that marriage movie, my ears were bleeding...
He's a paper bag job....put a paper bag over his head while you're fucking him.

R147. You betcha. He may have been pissed off for that reason or it’s just a case of his bitchy lover influencing him in all the wrong ways.
He does have a history of paranoid behavior. Dictating to restaurant staff that they seat him in private areas so fans don’t bother him. What fans? He also demands that staff escort him to his seat at the theatre. Diva!
In Jordan, shooting TROS, he had a huge tantrum when one of his fuck buddies refused to fly out because he had been treating her like shit. It wasn’t Theron but another sweetie who was almost sent around the bend when he ghosted her.
Great actor but a nightmare to handle. Theron is in for a wild ride.

As I mentioned on the other thread, he did some really superior guest star turns a few years ago on various TV prime time dramas. Interesting but not traditionally handsome face. Doesn't sound like he handles attention very well. That's not an asset for someone who wants to be a star. Maybe that's not what he wants. Or maybe he's talented but stupid.
