Does anyone like her in the USA?
Or is she mainly a Great-Britain treasure?

She's known here in the U.S. Only for the Bond songs, though. So, yes, she's mainly a British thing.

Whenever I'm cranky, I turn this up and dance my ass off...
Cheers me right up.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 16, 2019 8:14 PM |
My other favorite...
Sounds like a Bond theme in search of a movie...
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 16, 2019 8:17 PM |
R3- wonderful
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 16, 2019 8:24 PM |
The Bond themes have assured her place in pop culture.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 16, 2019 8:27 PM |
She's basically the Cher of Britain, but she was never a big deal in America.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 16, 2019 8:32 PM |
Love Shirley Bassey. Saw her in concert in Houston way back in the mid-70's. Wonderful!!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 16, 2019 8:48 PM |
I was a fan of hers until I read a story where she had a disagreement with a gay guy & went off on his sexuality with a put down.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 16, 2019 9:17 PM |
"Get this potty stotted!"
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 16, 2019 9:21 PM |
She's amazing. Her rendition of "As If We Never Said Goodbye" is amazing. I call Bullshit on the anti gay allegations. Dame Shirley knows her fan base.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 16, 2019 9:29 PM |
R12 People said the same thing about Michelle Shocked.
And Bette Midler with her gay marriage comments.
And Fantasia.
And Donna Summer.

I am surprised that Big Spender was apparently only a hit in the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 16, 2019 10:09 PM |
US Eldergay here, and I love her when I am in the mood for belting and bombast. A light touch she she doesn’t have.
And yes, she mopped the fucking floor with that Pink cover.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 16, 2019 10:16 PM |
I like her music. I detest her. She's a right wing cunt who votes Conservative.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 16, 2019 10:53 PM |
She was amazing on the Academy Awards a few years ago when she sang Goldfinger during the Bond tribute. Hit and held every note - at 80! Poor Adele had to follow her with Skyfall.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 16, 2019 11:13 PM |
She was superb at the Oscars, imperious and totally over the top. She got a standing ovation in our living room.
Hard to believe she was pushing 80 and turning up the volume from her original version half a century earlier.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 17, 2019 12:29 AM |
I'm embarrassed by OP's question. Any fans?? SHIRLEY FUCKING BASSEY?????!?!!? Bow down, queens. She RULES.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 17, 2019 12:42 AM |
Genève, Lugano, The Lido, Marbella, Monte Carlo. She knew how to glitter.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 17, 2019 12:54 AM |
No real vocal control and a vibrato you could steer a supertanker through.
But she could/can put on a kind of "class" look. And she has a certain attitude. And sense of humor.
But Mabel Mercer she ain't.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 17, 2019 1:05 AM |
Been a major fan for decades. Saw her live at the Fox Theater in Atlanta back in the 70s. Even got a kiss from her after the show.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 17, 2019 1:23 AM |
Bitch stole my act.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 17, 2019 1:27 AM |
She fucked Peter Finch when he was in his prime. The affair ended her marriage.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 17, 2019 1:39 AM |
^ Peter Finch had a " prime"?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 17, 2019 1:44 AM |
Not a fan. At. All.
If you enjoy her, wonderful. I can see why people might. There's something about her voice and phrasing that just so doesn't work for me. History Repeating Herself was the only song I even remotely liked, and mostly because of the music.

DIVA
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 17, 2019 2:03 AM |
Everyone loves Shirley Bassey.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 17, 2019 2:41 AM |
She's just so Monte Carlo.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 17, 2019 3:05 AM |
I remember telling years ago an Australian friend telling me she was huge there and I saw her on Graham Norton a year ago and she seemed a fabulous diva.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 17, 2019 3:06 AM |
She ain't no Mamie Van Doren.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 17, 2019 3:48 AM |
She looks good. A bit too theatrical. I imagine she's a cunt behind closed doors.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 17, 2019 4:25 AM |
She is ab-fab fantastic. Her more recent album The Living Tree is the bomb!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 17, 2019 4:31 AM |
Her life hasn't been all roses and champagne. Her daughter was found dead floating in the River Avon back in the 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 17, 2019 1:13 PM |
I think her and Tom Jones are two of the most exciting singers I have ever heard. Both are capable of torrents of sound!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 17, 2019 1:21 PM |
R18, she completely blew Adele offstage. Adele was overpowered by the orchestra and you could barely hear her. Shirley Bassey THUNDERED over the orchestra and there was no question who was in charge. The fact that she is like 2.5x Adele's age is pretty embarrassing for Adele.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 17, 2019 1:42 PM |
Such a gross song, but she makes it work....
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 17, 2019 2:01 PM |
I love Shirley, but she doesn't have the range.....
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 17, 2019 2:08 PM |
R38, I heard an interview with Tom Jones (with Teri Gross?) where he suggested that their powerhouse delivery was attributable to their being Welsh. Unbridled.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 17, 2019 2:16 PM |
That's glamorous, R44!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 17, 2019 6:15 PM |
Yes, Copycat Thread Thief.
We know you saw that Shirley Bassey has a stan spamming the “Big-Voiced Gals” thread. You’re either the stan or a copycat, but you’re not original.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 17, 2019 6:32 PM |
One of the greatest voices ever. (Yes I am Welsh). My favourite Bassey song.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 18, 2019 5:34 PM |
What I find interesting about Shirley Bassey is that she invented a character for herself and stayed with it for the next 60 years. Her singing style never changed from "Goldfinger". Always glamorous, always giving audiences exactly what they expected of her. She never tried to go off in other directions. She really stuck to her brand.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 18, 2019 5:53 PM |
Shirley Bassey was one of Aretha Franklin's favorite singers.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 18, 2019 6:15 PM |
Phenomenal lady. Love her singing this song.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 19, 2019 3:00 AM |
Not many people can make a Queen song sound like their own.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 19, 2019 8:39 AM |
Love her and I wanted to fuck both the Propellerheads badly ! Especially the drummer . Whet them ?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 23, 2019 10:49 PM |
Duet with Neil Diamond. They look like they couldn't wait for the song to be over so they can fuck........

R42 young Jamie Theakston (the interviewer) was gorgeous!
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 23, 2019 11:13 PM |
Her first husband was gay and ODed.
I can see her not enjoying seeing her current man kissing another man.
And it was another time.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 23, 2019 11:26 PM |
I was never keen on her. Too theatrical and bombastic. Then she headlined the Legends stage at Glastonbury a few years ago, and showed a sense of humour about herself I had never suspected was there.

[quote] Dame Shirley Bassey. Any fans?
The next King of England for one

Funny how Shirl meets Prince Charlie with her 40+ titaroons visible to all, yet she disapproves of all the the young performs of today who look like sluts.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 24, 2019 2:36 AM |
"40+ titaroons" means 40+ YEAR OLD titaroons.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 24, 2019 2:43 AM |
R62
Prince Charles's father seems to be a fan too.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 24, 2019 8:23 AM |
They don't like blondes. How come?
Nefer understood this lofe for negroes half-bred in this family.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 24, 2019 8:26 AM |
With Yello + Billy Mackenzie in 1987. Almost sounds like another Bond theme.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 24, 2019 8:57 AM |
For those who think Shirley can't do soft and subtle. Try this. Very 70's but I just love it.
