It’s a wonder that Olivier was able to get of his passion projects turned into films but somehow couldn’t manage it with Macbeth. Was he afraid of being upstaged by his wife in his one area of expertise? I can’t imagine she was anything short of brilliant playing a character that contained aspects of Scarlett and Blanche.
How wonderful Vivien Leigh must have been as Lady Macbeth

Peggy Ashcroft thought Leigh was the best Lady Macbeth she had ever seen.

Ashcroft played Hester in "The Deep Blue Sea" on stage before Leigh did the film. Kenneth Moore played Freddie with both actresses.

Do anyone tape it?

Sir Alec Guinness also stated it was the best performance she had ever given and the best Lady Macbeth he had ever seen of many. I wish a film of it existed but, alas, Hammy Olivier could not have competition and he had already been outdone by her GWTW abd Streetcar wins.

She herself was a fragile monster--like Lady Macbeth. She must have been marvelous.

She may not be the beauty that Vivien Leigh was, but Dame Judi was phenomenal. She has a way of making Shakespeare's language sound more modern to my ears. Love, love, love her to bits.
