Are there African tribes whose body types are large and fleshy? I'm mostly ignorant about the African diaspora, I think of Africans as lean and slim. I know I have also seen in the National Geo pictures of slim built Africans with muscular behinds. But large built Africans who carry a good amount of fat, can't say I've seen that but as I say I'm largely ignorant.

My question is, is the tendency to weight gain in the Black community solely diet or has mixing with white people changed the biology (not sure if that's the right term) of a good number of Black people to tend toward weight gain? Because based on my limited knowledge of Africans, Black folks should tend toward a slimmer leaner body type.

I've wondered the same thing, R16. And we're not talking about being "thick" or "fat" from eating too much.

We're talking being GENETICALLY prone to that body type.

And I believe the answer is that is probably varies.

Ethiopians and Kenyans are very, very skinny people, genetically. Their genetics (my understanding is from living on the plains and chasing wild animals for food) make then prone to being very skinny and fast runners. That's why there are so many Kenyan and Ethiopian marathon runners.

I think that West Africans may be more pre-disposed to being heavier, and having thicker bodies than East Africans.

Still, in general, they are not "fat."

So the answer is probably that African people are no more prone to being overweight, or having thicker body types than Europeans.
