Guys who model for Ralph Lauren
Do any of you know guys who model for Ralph Lauren (have gotten good gigs for their ads)?
In real life, they're nothing like this, right? It's not like he's going to some obscure school in Switzerland and finding the most weirdly isolated and old-school of boys to model this stuff, right?
In real life, they wear normal clothes and listen to hip-hop and eat fast food, surely?

Have you ever heard of lighting and photo retouching, OP?

Fashion world is a lot like movie world, it's all an illusion

They're nothing like their ads. Culturally they're modern. They're not weird rarified billionaire's sons with perfect genetics. They're peasants who happen to look good with the right angles, makeup, and retouching.
This is the guy in green, who was the prettiest of that campaign.

Excuse me but how stupid exactly are the people on this website?? I can't believe such a question was asked for real.

OP, no, I think you’re wrong.
Certainly they eat no fast food. Zero. They spend a lot of time at the gym. They fuss about fashion because it interests them, to keep up with their friends and co-workers, and goose their employment possibilities.
I have a gorgeous neighbor. He’s lived there about 20 years and is now almost 50. He’s a computer guy, but extremely fit. 6’3”, probably a 34” waist. Always has a gorgeous boyfriend that he keeps for 5 or 10 years. He’s also very nice. [italic] Anyway, [/italic] I ran into his boyfriend at the supermarket once. It looked like it was just a routine shopping trip, but his carriage was filled with things I’d only buy for a special occasion, if ever. I remember salmon, lots of healthy vegetables, nothing with any fat at all. My point is, to keep fit like that, you have to live it. There really are people like that.

R9, ok, they have to eat a certain way, but culturally, they're more or less like the rest of us right? Or are they from an island of billionaires?
This is Ollie Edwards. Same as the image at OP. He does motocross. But is he English trash? Or is he an aristocrat?

How it is starting out as a male model.

Billionaires sons in PreP school (see what I did there?) rarely have their Ivy League sons work the runway and model. It's considered beneath them. You follow daddy into the firm, become a philanthropist, art collector, ect.

Max Irons, son of successful actor Jeremy Irons, was a model. He’s 6’3”. A little heavier now.
Exception to R13’s rule.

Yeah - good looks can be an entree into a better world - as has been known by gaylings forever. But the smart ones will use it to get ahead in something that has long term big payoff - including marrying money or working at a hedge fund for a friends father. Looks get you ahead - modeling is a shortcut to a quick payoff that burns out quickly.

I knew one who looked almost nothing like his photos for RL. Cute guy but not striking at all and definitely not a WASP but boy did he look the role in the pics. Photography is very different than real life and many beautiful people photograph like crap. Many unattractive or odd looking people photograph beautifully. Same can be said for female models. Karlie Kloss was homely when I sat next to her from NY to London. Not one person recognized her or asked for an autograph.

Very true. People who are incredibly striking in person often photograph poorly

I know! But he’s 6’3” and really muscular. He might be a 32” waist, but that’s hard to imagine.
I was a 32” waist in college and I’m 6’2”. I was still thin even at 34”. But, I do know this is DataLounge.
Hmm, I never snuck a photo, shame on me! Notthat I would post it, but I could better assess his waist size with a photo, than from memory.

Used to be, they would smoke to stay thin. These days, successful people are expected to have more self control.

There was a distinct shift several years ago that went from waist sizes in inches to simply waist sizes.
A size 34 waist is NOT 34 inches for most men's clothes.

A lot of the models in the 70's and early 80's Polo ads were really from the upper class, and weren't active models when Ralph hired them. Isabel Townsend, for instance, was one of Ralph's most iconic models in the early years, and she was the daughter of Peter Townsend, Princess Margaret's former lover. Many of the male models were from the surfing and boating world, where, back then, you needed to have an immense amount of family wealth in order to be in that world.
Now, though? That look is more cultivated, and a result of lighting and, more important, grooming. If you've got good hair and the right haircut and product, it is not that difficult to affect that aristocratic look.

In fact, OP, many of them come from grand French and Austrian families and are recruited at the winter campus of Le Rosey, in Gstaad. Ypir's son, whose father is a de La Rochefoucauld and a Osmanoğlu, turned Ralph Lauren down, and is currently at Brown.

[R28], the Queen or a member of the RF, bestows the honour on the recipient. The government chooses whom to ask about receiving an honour. It's a process I'm going to look into now, as there's lots that goes on before the individual's name is called and they take that short stroll up to the stage and hope to Christ they don't get jabbed by a sharp pin [that's a joke. I don't think anybody's ever got jabbed. Accidentally, that is.]

Of course OP
Polo recruited heavily at certain eating clubs at Princeton, like Cannon, which was for rich jocks, For many of us, the choice between a modeling career and an entry level gig at Goldman or BCG was a tough one for as the recruiters frequently explained, you need to be born to it in order to carry off that look.
I've heard times are tough though now and Polo's actually been recruiting at places like Duke and Johns Hopkins.

Polo offered a contract to a golden-boy-looking Aggie at Cornell until Ann Coulter put a stop to that! "Aggies are not in the Ivy League!" And he certainly was not a Jew, he rowed crew, and had 9 inches.
