Russian History in high school. Realized it’s a fucked up country and likely always will be. And became more grateful to have been born in the US.

The Meiji Restoration in Japan, really helped me understand how Japan industrialised so quickly and differently to the west, why the rest of Asia followed the Japanese model and why Japan became such a military aggressor in the early 20th century. It's a good lens to see China through as well (as IMO China swaps about between three models of development; The West, Japan and The Soviets).
Rome's transition from a Republic an Imperial State is an eye opener as well.
