IS the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman a Gateway Drug for Gay Boys?

Two days ago at the end of my Elementary school STEM Lab classes (K through 3rd Grade), I played this video in the background while the students cleaned up. The kids were transfixed!

Today, they were begging to see it again at the end of class, and when I showed it to them, half of the boys started twirling around like Diana in this video. Only a few of the girls seemed interested in the video, but the boys were just geeking out! A few of them even shrieked when Diana's cape appears later in the video.

I'm not going to play it again because who knows about INSANE PARENTS these days.

Was the 1975-1979 Wonder Woman TV show a gateway passage for boys into realizing their gayness?

I had my first sort of sex dream about Lynda Carter so, yes.

by Anonymousreply 1October 31, 2019 11:10 PM

LOL - the spin transformations while she was falling off the building and in the chair are classics.

NO ONE is better than Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman.

If the Arrow crossover doesn't land her, they will have missed the chance of a lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 2October 31, 2019 11:11 PM

I am profoundly traumatized from childhood for acting like her. I would spin around and pretend to be WW. I was made fun of and bullied from cousins and neighbor kids when I was young. At 45 years of age, people, especially family, will still bring this up today. Fucking sucks! So yes. WW made me gay.

by Anonymousreply 3October 31, 2019 11:11 PM

I had an ex who was into her since he was a boy. There are videos his parents took of him twirling as a boy. She may not cause gayness, but she certainly is a symptom.

by Anonymousreply 4October 31, 2019 11:13 PM

I was a twirler as well. Here's a test, OP - if the boys start imitating this ad, there will be an emergency PTA meeting.

Yes and no. As a bi guy, my gay side likes the campyness of it, while my straight side can't help but stare at her tits.

by Anonymousreply 6October 31, 2019 11:19 PM

She was for lesbians.

by Anonymousreply 7October 31, 2019 11:33 PM

I asked about gay men, not lesbians or bisexual men, neither of which understands or cares about gay sensibility.

by Anonymousreply 8October 31, 2019 11:45 PM

I don't think that's true, e.g. Rosie O'Donnell's love of Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 9October 31, 2019 11:48 PM

The cape, the twirling, the costumes... those are GAY things, something no bisexual man understands.

One of my students said, "She has a suit for swimming?!?!!!!" in amazement and glee.

by Anonymousreply 10October 31, 2019 11:53 PM

Another spinner here. I also used to jump off things impersonating the way WW jumped. My parents also have home movies to show my gayness to anyone watching.

by Anonymousreply 11October 31, 2019 11:57 PM

R10 You are so stupid. Being bisexual doesn't mean I can't appreciate those things, I very much love and appreciate camp. I like broadway, divas, soaps, old Hollywood, etc... none of that means I can't also be attracted sexually to both men and women. Some of you have such parochial ideas.

by Anonymousreply 12October 31, 2019 11:59 PM

Having sex with men on the downlow while publicly dating women is not appreciating anything to do with being gay.

by Anonymousreply 13November 1, 2019 12:02 AM

If Lynda Carter is the gateway drug then who is the crystal meth?

by Anonymousreply 14November 1, 2019 12:02 AM

R13 You no nothing about me.

by Anonymousreply 15November 1, 2019 12:03 AM

Stevie Nicks? Barbra? Golden Girls?

by Anonymousreply 16November 1, 2019 12:03 AM

Sorry you know nothing about me.

by Anonymousreply 17November 1, 2019 12:04 AM

R15, I got your number 100%. I can also spell "know."

To you, Gay men are second class and inferior to women and the men who fuck women.

You'd be able to actually relate to the subject on the "What's Pussy Feel Like?" thread than this thread about gay men.

by Anonymousreply 18November 1, 2019 12:06 AM

[quote] If Lynda Carter is the gateway drug then who is the crystal meth?

Judy. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 19November 1, 2019 12:08 AM

I was a WW fan when I was 3 - 7 yrs old. I spun around and loved all things Lynda Carter for years after the show ended. Fuck, I had the cassette of her album Portrait and I watched her CBS TV specials and Partners In Crime on NBC with fuckin’ Lonnie Anderson!

by Anonymousreply 20November 1, 2019 12:08 AM

As a kid watching this show my sister didn't like it, she felt Diana was too pushy and would never get a man with that attitude. I loved it and would spin around and made bullet deflecting cuffs from toilet paper rolls. My sister ratted me out to our mother for "acting like a girl" and my days of Wonder Woman fun were over.

by Anonymousreply 21November 1, 2019 12:09 AM

Parents today? LOL. People have been complaining about "parents today" for the past 3000 years or so

by Anonymousreply 22November 1, 2019 12:09 AM

OP/R18 sounds damaged. Seriously damaged.

by Anonymousreply 23November 1, 2019 12:09 AM

OP I think so much of TV today--for adults and kids--is such crap that something like WW is new and exciting. Bright colours, bright lighting, things that shows today lack.

by Anonymousreply 24November 1, 2019 12:10 AM

Bitch- it’s Lynda Carter.... she’s all that!

by Anonymousreply 25November 1, 2019 12:11 AM

Seeing Lyle Waggoner tied and gagged did it for me.

by Anonymousreply 26November 1, 2019 12:13 AM

Lynda Carter's foxiness knew no bounds. She was the shit.

by Anonymousreply 27November 1, 2019 1:07 AM

I was infatuated with her version of Wonder Woman when I was a kid. A gay friend of mine was as well, and his mania still knows no bounds. He collects WW memorabilia and owns the series on DVD

by Anonymousreply 28November 1, 2019 1:10 AM

Did you say half the boys in the class started twirling? What kind of school do you teach at?

I spent my time imitating Uncle Arthur on Bewitched.

[Quote] If the Arrow crossover doesn't land her, they will have missed the chance of a lifetime.

I think they said Lynda could make an appearance but sadly not as WW.

by Anonymousreply 36November 1, 2019 8:33 AM

I cut soup cans with scissors to make bracelets. The edges were sharp and could cut you,

by Anonymousreply 37November 1, 2019 8:46 AM

OP is onto something here, there is defitsome kind of connection to this show and gaylings. It speaks to them.

by Anonymousreply 38November 1, 2019 10:46 AM

I thought the gay boy twirling thing was because of Stevie Nicks.

by Anonymousreply 39November 1, 2019 10:55 AM

Lynda twirling to become Wonder Woman certainly seems to have captured the imagination of many a young gayling. When I was first coming out during college days in the 80s, a standard phrase among gay friends was, "Let's Twirl," meaning "Let's Go."

Great to know that 40+ years after Lynda started twirling, its still affecting potential young gaylings.

by Anonymousreply 40November 1, 2019 11:58 AM

I was more into the Bionic Woman and 6 M Dollar Man. I would do the sounds effects and jumped and ran.

by Anonymousreply 41November 1, 2019 12:50 PM

Twirl + that awesome disco soundtrack background music = five star gay

by Anonymousreply 42November 1, 2019 1:28 PM

r41 is a Top

by Anonymousreply 43November 1, 2019 3:59 PM

All those videos were good. I LOVE how Wonder Woman ran around in what was pretty much a one piece swim suit with her luscious bosom perched in the strapless top. But when she actually went swimming she wore a head to toe spandex wetsuit with a head cap!

The first season fighting the Nazis is a drag. Modern seasons 2 and 3 are much better. Lots of funny guest stars, including Leif Garrett as a teen singer heartthrob and Dawn Lynn, his real sister, playing an obsessed tween stalker fan... wtf?

by Anonymousreply 44November 1, 2019 4:45 PM

[quote]I think they said Lynda could make an appearance but sadly not as WW.

I would be perfectly fine with Lynda as Princess Diana back on Paradise Island in a flowy gown, ruling as queen. She doesn't need to be in the WW outfit although a few bullets and bracelets would be fun.

by Anonymousreply 45November 1, 2019 5:02 PM

I can’t tell if she’s happy that WW is a gay icon or not.

More like gate to drag. What the appeal of WW for gays? I never got that.

by Anonymousreply 48November 1, 2019 5:55 PM

r47 Lynda was perfect as Wonder Woman. She's not the greatest actress, but her portrayal of Diana Prince/WW is why the show is still such a pop culture touchstone. Anybody could've put on that costume, but Carter's acting in that role was what made the show work.

In some episodes, there is noticable space between her upper thighs and the openings. My Large Marge mother also noticed it and made sniping remarks about Linda's supposed "anorexia."

by Anonymousreply 54November 2, 2019 7:07 AM

It could be a combination of both women, r39.

Fun fact: Stevie Nicks and Lynda Carter were both born in Phoenix, Arizona.

by Anonymousreply 57November 2, 2019 8:39 AM

Who hasn't spun around at least once when this show aired?

by Anonymousreply 58November 2, 2019 9:01 AM

OP you are brilliant, as others said, you discovered something that seems to transcend time. I too was a WW Spinner. Thought I was the only one.

So why is the gayling catnip? Here is my intellectual breakdown. My hunch is it fills in a lot of blanks for young gay boys who already know they are different somehow but don't know why. Even at that very young age, bulling was and still goes on. She was like a hero in a way. Someone who had a secret they had to keep. Someone who could fight back, someone who ultimately wanted good for all people. Keep in mind, everything else from young boys at the time was about fighting, killing, and "winning". That just doesn't appeal to young gay men who are more sensitive. As a group, gay men just are not violent like straight men. But being so mean you get attacked by them. She was a way to release an inner brave spirit to stand your ground. And she didn't have a gun or weapon to kill, think about that.

by Anonymousreply 66November 2, 2019 7:37 PM

I like Wonder Woman and Jaime Sommers because they were tough independent women. All the women in my life as a gayling were abused and treated like shit by my father. Those shows opened up a world to me where women didn't have to take that shit.

by Anonymousreply 67November 2, 2019 10:25 PM

No, R63, thigh gap is when there is space between the legs themselves. I'm talking about her suit's leg openings sometimes being too large.

by Anonymousreply 75November 3, 2019 7:08 AM

I had the opposite experience. All of the women in my life as a gayling were strong, working independent mothers, sisters, aunts with professional jobs. They were not the norm though. So I guess seeing Jamie Summers or Wonder Woman was like a validation that my family was not that unusual compared to what I saw around the neighborhood. None of their jobs were glamorous however.

by Anonymousreply 76November 3, 2019 7:12 AM

Lynda Carter was the best wonder woman.

R62, I bought that on DVD. Can't believe how cheesy it is, but for children it's great with the "moral lessons" at the end.

by Anonymousreply 82November 24, 2019 1:11 AM

R60/R61, the WW2 episodes were more appropriate to the era. I don't have the DVD set, but saw part of it on youtube. Lynda said she did not like the original costume with the "cone boobs". Although the updated costume is beautiful, it's a bit vulgar, especially the blue bikini bottom. In the original comics, Wonder Woman had a skirt. Lynda wore it a few times in the show. Fannie Flagg was in the movie. The exec producer said the original intertwined spinning (instead of the flash of light) was time-consuming & very expensive. I believe in the comic, she twirled her lasso around her to change. The exploding bracelets were interesting and could only be fired once; she had the trigger in her palm, which is why her fist is always closed.

by Anonymousreply 83November 24, 2019 1:20 AM

R84, he was a big hottie. I think he appeared naked in Playgirl and is uncut. Long, great legs.

by Anonymousreply 85November 24, 2019 1:23 AM

Raquel Welch was not the inspiration. Wonder Woman has been around since WWII.

by Anonymousreply 86November 24, 2019 1:25 AM

It was called "Screaming Javelins" and featured Henry Gibson as a villain named Mariposa who was hellbent on building his own Olympic team by kidnapping the best athletes from other countries. It was bad '70s TV that also managed to be must-be-seen-to-be-believed TV at the same time.

In the late 80s, I worked with a woman who had been adopted and was very troubled over it. She changed her name to Druscilla Prince, based on Debra WInger's role as Princess Druscilla. As far as I know, Ms. Prince was not gay; she was just crazy.

by Anonymousreply 103November 24, 2019 5:49 AM

I wasn't so much into the spinning or the cape as I was into the way she waved her arms when she leapt. Know idea why. But whenever I'd go swimming at our local pool, I would always jump as high as I could and do that quick, furtive circle-wave.

by Anonymousreply 106November 24, 2019 11:04 AM

R101, funny you post that because I've seen that mentioned by straight men! They were also watching her breasts and crotch! Reminded of an inappropriate comment made to a small boy. I'd observed how much her magic lasso magically stretched whenever she needed additional line and some redneck lowlife said, "I know what else stretches." I asked self, "What does he mean?" Today I know he was a dirty bird. I've been exposed needlessly to inappropriate filth like that often.

R105, thanks much! I'm also looking forward to that. Pierce was great! My first friends were drag queens and trans, but they weren't labeled that then. Wasn't Pierce a friend of Phyllis Diller's? Ironic that such a heavy drinker survived to 95. An acquaintance of hers said, "She had to cut way back at 80." I haven't had a drink since I was 23. Boozers are always bad news.

Just back from NYC and saw this (link below) at the MoMA.

There was this Wonder Woman video featuring Beloved Lynda Carter playing Diana Prince and Wonder Woman, with lots of spinning looped and repeated, lots of bullets bouncing off bracelets and other Wonder Woman action spliced together. I love me some Wonder Woman, but it was really strange seeing this in a big museum in NYC. I guess the artist compiled the clips long ago, but today youtube is full of super mix mash ups of Wonder Woman doing her thing similar to this exhibit. Haha. Art/Crap for Mass Consumption. Yes, OP. It was one of the gates I went through realizing my gayness. But it wasn't't Lynda Carter's twirls or her in satin tights for the red, white, and blue that set the lightbulb on. Lyle Waggoner did it for me! First, in that World War Two era Army Officer's uniform and then when he wore those tight poly blend trousers of the 1970s.

I also realized I like a certain activity whenever he or other male characters got tied up!

It was for me. I admit I recently cried during the WW 1984 trailer, when she lassos the lightening bolt. I still prefer the original, though.

It was stupid television at its apex- I knew it then and I know it now. Have no idea why it was anything but camp rip off of the Batman and Robin sitcom of the 69s.

I would have 69ed with Burt Ward back in '69.

Now? Not so much.

Lynda Carter complained to her director, who was mad she needed a lot of takes for a scene as couldn't remember her lines, " It really doesn't matter. Only little girls watch this show."

Clearly Lynda was wearing a wig for WW. Saw her hairdresser put it on her head. Lynda Carter was talking about the upcoming fun weekend event where she'd be partying with all of her girlfriends. Believe it was going to happen in Santa Barbara. She seemed really, really self-focused. Hairdresser was a super charming doll of an older woman, agreeing with everything Lynda said.
