I agree with you--she is a clearly a highly sensitive, damaged person. I think there is a gentle sweetness about her, mixed with a simultaneous sadness. on some level, I have sympathy for her, but I also recognize that she is her own worst enemy in so many ways. The stealing of the jewelry back in the day made that very clear. I think she is very, very insecure, largely because of the way she was raised (or rather, wasn't), and the level of fame she had at such a young age. Being that famous is hard even for well-adjusted people—for a young girl who is already clearly sensitive, I can't even imagine.

It's a shame her career (and looks) torpedoed SO far because she was a very decent actress. I think her performance in Freaky Friday is so funny and quite subtle actually. A great 'straight man' in Mean Girls. But between her looks and her reputation, the offers are probably going to continue to be reality TV rather than acting roles (at least in anything decent that isn't stunt casting). I'm Australian and the Masked Singer is a good gig for her. She doesn't have to do much (and has obviously never heard of these F-list Aussie celebs), comes across as a really nice person, and proves she can punch a clock and appear on camera.

I think this Alan Carr interview on British TV from years ago was very telling. He is poking fun at her but doing it in an affectionate way, and she *tries* to be a good sport, but she can't hide her natural awkwardness or sensitivity (especially when he asks about her lezzing off with Samantha Ronson). She really looks on edge and like she's about to cry, even when she's laughing she is nervously looking around.

I strongly suspect that the ones who did wind up messed up came from backgrounds that would have likely led to drug use and mental illness regardless. I've known plenty of people who had a suburban middle American childhood and wound up basket cases or with substance abuse problems.
