The more I read about Jackie the more I dislike her. She was a strong woman

Jackie was a high-class prostitute. She used people, even Carly.

I have to say- i wasn't interested in reading this book UNTIL this article. Now I gotta get it. It sounds unintentionally DISHY.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 26, 2019 7:47 PM |
I wonder if she included the anecdote where Jackie complains about how terrible a choice Ed Schlossberg was as a husband for Caroline. I think that was Carly's FU to Ed for the way he treated her at Jackie's funeral.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 26, 2019 7:51 PM |
From what I have read, Carly either didn't know much or has kept it to herself.
Very little dish -- except JFK was with a mistress when Jackie gave birth to their first child (stillborn). And that Jackie said she didn't really care about all his affairs.
I bet Jackie was pretty cagey about what she told everyone.

"She was the mother I never had."
Quite a kick in the cunt to her mother, who was wont to fuck boys Carly's age in the same house as her husband and children.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 26, 2019 7:54 PM |
I thought Carly's first memoir "Boys in the Trees" we interesting because Carly is a good writer and her own life has been interesting.
But this book seems like it is based on VERY LITTLE material. It's stretched tighter than Carly.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 26, 2019 7:56 PM |
She could have done another biography, since Boys ends after James and her divorce. There's plenty of stuff she could write about, riding the Dynasty wave with Al Corley, Russ Kunkel, when her second husband initially mistook her for Linda Ronstadt, her comeback with Coming Around Again and winning the Oscar. Getting to know the Clintons at the time Bill was first elected. Her ordeal with breast cancer. The Jackie stuff could have been sandwiched in there.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 26, 2019 8:01 PM |
R8 Absolutely. Fending off Bill Clinton's paws would have been a whole chapter.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 26, 2019 8:03 PM |
The problem with the first installment was that she was protecting her children. So she didn't go into what a screaming nightmare James Taylor was.
But to come home to someone who resented you for having a hit record, but couldn't write anything good because he was so fucked up on cocaine and heroin . . . oy.

A Carly Simon memoir called "Touched by the Sun"? No thank you.
Now, if she'd written "Touched by the Son"? I would read that!

Who was the "wildly attractive but unemployed writer" who turned out to be gay?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 26, 2019 8:26 PM |
R14 Her second husband Jim Hart. He was a friend of a friend who knew he was gay and, at the time (late ‘80s/early ‘90s), a sober alcoholic. Carly and Hart met on an Amtrak train and she reportedly treated him like the hired help. He wasn’t a successful writer when they met and he was financially dependent on her.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 26, 2019 8:37 PM |
Yes, Jim Hart was a "poet" who didn't tell Carly he was gay.
And, no, he was never "wildly" attractive.

The most interesting thing I have ever read about Jackie O was the "Jackie on Assistance" thread here at DL and most of that was tawdry fiction.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 27, 2019 7:20 PM |
Jackie was shrewd and careful who she let in her life. You think she'd let Carly into her life, visit her homes, socialise with her, visit her on her deathbed, invite her to her funeral, if they weren't good friends? You can bet Onassis drew up a list of those allowed to see her at her time of dying and that her family adhered to it. Jackie ghosted people left right and centre for the smallest of misdemeanors, there's no way she kept Simon in her life if they weren't close.
That article has been taken out of context. Jackie used Simon to get free entertainment at Caroline's wedding? Or she merely asked her close friend to sing? Simon may have even offered. Perhaps Jackie was just doing her job, what she was told to do by Doubleday, when offering a low book deal (this was before they were friends in any case). Another writer professes that Carly took the valium because she was scared of Onassis. Carly took the valium because she's nuts, always has been. High strung neurotic bipolar.
However, one thing is for certain, if Jackie were alive, this book wouldn't exist. Jackie would have seen this book as an ultimate betrayal. I think it's a huge faux pas, a sacrilege even, to write a book about a friend who was so private, we're talking about a woman who asked her children in her will to protect her privacy even after death. I'm guessing Carly won't be getting any Christmas cards from Caroline this year.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 27, 2019 8:28 PM |
Carly's a bit of a doormat. The last third of her memoir was a tough read - still obsessively pining over her relationship with James Taylor, almost 40 years after it ended, when it was clearly a bit of a fucked-up dynamic. She became clingy and needy early on and he just started resenting her for it. You want to slap her and tell her to move on already.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 27, 2019 8:49 PM |
Carly has only done one television interview, so far. A series of softball questions from Cynthia McFadden on TODAY.

At the very least, Taylor seems to be a very emotionally undemonstrative person. Carly is the opposite. And of course he was a big league drug addict and she ended up in the position of trying to mother him. No way do I believe Jackie O was Carly Simon's "best friend." I think they were, at best, acquaintances. Rich people acquaintances. Carly Simon wants people to buy her shitty book, so she cooks up this story about having a "close" relationship with Jackie Kennedy Onassis in order to sell copies of it. I guess she figures any book associated with Jackie will be a bestseller. What a cuntish thing to do, using dead Jackie's name to sell books.

I think the DL should write a biography about Jackie On Assistance. 'Touched by the Scum; Our stories of Jackie On Assistance' with a forward by the Central Park street sweeper; 'She had nowhere to shit. She didn't eat much so she'd store it up and once a week, every Thursday afternoon, she'd go to the cinema downtown and take a dump in their bathroom where no one would recognise her. Except someone did! Carly Simon saw her!'

by Anonymous | reply 104 | October 29, 2019 3:34 AM |
Jackie did NOT want the Schlesinger interview released until 100 years after the interview or after her death. She didn't want people who knew any of the people she mentioned to hear what she had to say, like Martin Luther King's family. Had Caroline obeyed Jackie's wishes, everyone who ever knew MLK would have been dead upon release of the tapes.

Yes R103. The Kardashians have been top rated for a decade. They interest the majority of Americans. Kim has 50m twitter fans and 150 million Instagram followers. Jackie was not a loved first lady - but she is admired for planning a good funeral. Bitch was too cold and weird. And then she went off the rails for cash. All this secrecy about how dull and proper and cold and controlling she was. Let your grievances out girl. Jackie was a sign of the time in fashion only. Otherwise she might have been in French court.
MLK having orgies doesn't detract from his seismic change of history. His profound leadership. His message of change and dignity. He will be written about long after pill box whores and absent husband presidents are forgotten. Orgies are peaceful. MLK promoted progress with peace. JFK was a diseased bug eyed whore who almost destroyed the western world. A man who summoned women to rape or to service him. Or to kiss. He was famously short on fucking. Not much there and he didn't last long. His presidency was fake news and he accomplished nothing progressive. He had ideas. The oldest of contributors here believe in his legacy. He wasn't evil? He sure was dirty. A white catholic sex addicted kind of dirty. Jackie was probably not very happy. Pathologically greedy courtesans don't always get to have happiness too.
Kim Kardashian is richer than Jackie could imagine. And she's happy. Her children are healthy and she's beautiful. Her husband is faithful. At almost 40, she is trying to better herself.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | October 29, 2019 4:01 AM |
Comparing Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis to the Kardashians is ludicrous.
The shallow Kardashians are pure filth and an example of how we as a society have sunk to an all-time low.

History is kind of fluid dude. I've read it and watched it and try to understand it. Jackie and Jack Kennedy reached incredible heights of power and were both people of accomplishment. But to suggest that Jackie Kennedy was loved by a country is ludicrous. She was a cold weird woman, even when she whispered and toured the White House. Nervous and snobbish. She was a famous fashion plate at one of the least attractive times in history. Made her look 20 years older. Then we learn from action and word that she was a greedy, graspy unhappy woman who held everyone to standards of secrecy that allowed for no intimacy....even for her own children. She crippled them. I was born two decades after JFK died, so we didn't all cry at our desks about him in 1995. He was a deeply flawed president with a wife who is not remembered for anything really other than the tragedy. Who killed him and why everyone lied so much was more of interest at that time. They were all a boring bunch of cheap men who treated their women and minorities like chess pieces. They had too much vision to be trashy. Like the Kardashians. Kim is so beautiful and perfected - Jackie would be jealous. Jackie Kennedy participated in far more sexually scandalous activities than a porn tape. She's lucky that only her wall eyed stupidity and bitchy frau comments are on record.
Kim K is turning out to be a right interesting woman. She's not made of sugar water at all. Jackie loved being a celebrity. Who thinks otherwise.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | October 29, 2019 4:41 AM |
Jackie was a lot less interesting than her historical importance, her celebrity and her aura. That she was not interesting but such as star, made her ironically somewhat interesting.

I'm also not ancient, but I do remember Jackie. Now do admit you're wrong, darling, and stop with the policing of threads we like to participate in, m'ok?
As for your assertion that there is no difference? There is, but I won't bother to explain it to you any further. You clearly do not have the ability to comprehend the difference between a old fashioned debutante and a currently grifting whore.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | October 29, 2019 3:36 PM |
Oh dear, someone comparing a life of substance to a grifting, plastic whore and then claiming those who admire them are doing the same thing?
I think not, dear. One had her own career and did not need a piss tape before she became famous. Jackie also did not resort to constant appeals to the press to maintain her fame. She didn't bare her ass on a magazine, she edited them.
No comparisons between the two are appropriate and Jackie stands on her own. I'll give Kim credit for making money on her assets. That's pretty much it. Her advocacy around criminal reform may be genuine and good for her, but it's an effort that other, less infamous men and women laid the groundwork for. She's just on another bandwagon.

R137 I used to read the "Carly Simon Board" back in AOL's heyday.
Carly used to post quite a bit. She was witty and surprisingly candid.
People were posting that John Travolta was gay. Carly responded, "Not gay. I know firsthand."
So Travolta apparently slept with Carly. She was probably the last woman he slept with.

I wish Carly and James had done "A Star is Born" (as originally planned) instead of Streisand, whose music was all wrong for the story.
But, apparently, Carly felt that it hit too close to home, as they were offered at a time when James was very resentful of Carly having several songs charting.

There are similarities between Jackie O/Lee Radziwill and the Kardashian sisters. Both families of sisters were raised to be attractive to men (as one of the primary goals in life). The Kardashian women make their own money, though. (Not a Kardashians fan, but credit where it's due.)

More than halfway through the audiobook. Thoughts so far:
- Carly is a total fruitcake. I didnt have too much of an opinion of her before this book other than I like some of her music. But now I think she is needy, insecure, juvenile, makes bad decisions and is snobby.
- Jackie is shady as heck. Some of the things she says are funny but overall she strikes me as a senior citizen version of Regina George. Seems to be one of those women who cant really be friends with other women and sees them mostly as competition.
- Carly and Jackie both put Mike Nichols on a pedestal and compete for his approval. And they both seem to dislike / keeps at arms length Diane Sawyer mainly because she is married to him and they see her as a threat.
Overall, it just seems like the people they hung out with are rich people high school. Lots of shading and gossip, I’d avoid this crew like the plague if I knew them.

Just listened to the first 6 chapters on Audible as I drove from Chicago to Michigan and back. Stop whatever you're doing and listen to this goddamn book! Elizabeth McGovern should win the Nobel Prize for narration. Chapter 3 focuses on Mike Nichols and Carly's and Jackie's seething jealousy of Diane Sawyer. It is delicious! Carly Simon comes off like an idiot. What would possess you to ask Jackie Onassis if she intended to see "JFK"? It undoubtedly was the most traumatic experience of her life, and an experience she was reminded of for the rest of her life. Simon knew she was a famously reserved woman who obsessively guarded her privacy. If Simon had half a brain, she should have realized that Jackie O would never talk about the assassination or Stone's film, unless she herself raised the subject.

Both of Carly's children are parasites, sponging off of her while trying to eke out a living strumming a guitar and knitting $600 sweaters. They guilt her into taking care of them, as their father can't really be bothered; his new family is his focus now. And yes, at one time Sally and her equally-parasitic husband left the island for Boston, pissed that Carly wouldn't deed them some of her property. She was refused visits with her grandson for two years, until they finally reconciled (no doubt they needed $omething from her, and she agreed, in order to see the little boy). Sally is a cunt and apparently married to another cunt of equal or greater size.
When Carly goes, they'll go through whatever money they get faster than water through a sieve. James won't leave them anything, it'll all go to his wife and their children. Ben will end up homeless on the island, if he doesn't O.D., and Sally's husband will divorce her, after they run through the money.

No one under 50 has any idea who she is, aside from "You're So Vain", which they might have knowledge of but couldn't recognize if they heard it. I doubt she's as rich as most people think. She lost millions to Kenneth Starr's crimes. She has sold off part of her Vineyard property recently, which she's owned for nearly 50 years. I think writing the books is more for the income than anything else. She can't sing anymore, and even if she could she wouldn't tour. The two kids make leeches look downright independent. I would love it if she left her estate, rights, etc to the grandson, IN TRUST! Just to be sure the two-legged barnacles don't get their clutches on it.

I know Sally. Not well. Because I wouldn't want to.
I am casual friends with Carly. Yes, Carly is neurotic, but she is very bright and witty. I love talking to her. She is funny and deliciously snide.
Sally is another matter. She inherited none of her mother's charm. wit, or talent. She is very spoiled, entitled and boring.
Even Carly knows Sally is unpleasant, but she loves her as only a mother can.

Ben and Sally are both very attractive. They are getting up there in years.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | November 1, 2019 1:37 AM |
Ben was attractive in his 20's. But the years have not been kind to him. It's rumored he has drug problems, which are most likely the reason why he looks older than his year. James and Carly have both aged quite nicely.
Carly was performing a couple of years back, doing some shows. But she wouldn't do anything unless Ben and Sally were with her. That seems to be a requisite to get her to perform at all now.

"Carly Simon has devised ingenious ways of dealing with performance panic. Suffering from palpitations in Pittsburgh, she invited spectators to join her on stage. Fifty people came up and massaged her arms and legs. Discovering that physical pain helps overpower fear, she wore tight boots or stabbed her hands with pins. Anxious at following Smokey Robinson at a celebration for Bill Clinton, she appealed to the horn section of the orchestra. 'They all took turns spanking me. During the last spank the curtain went up. The audience saw the aftermath, the sting on my face. I bet Olivier didn’t do that.'"

Too bad the ugly old bitch can't sing. Carly Simon will be remembered for nothing. Nutsy neurotic rich girl who dabbled in music and stealing men. There's good reason why James Taylor doesn't deal with her. His problems were fixable. He fixed them and found happiness and further success. She's still snide BABY hiding behind gross surgery and sunglasses at 80 years old? What an asshole. Terrible mother. Weird and bad singer. All that langor and no real chops. Ancient gays liked her formless songs and virtually toneless voice. She's nebulous. A word she would use in one of her dumb pretentious lyrics.

I think if there’s one thing Carly had in her prime, it’s incredible vibrancy. Even in still photos back in the day, she was so animated always. And yes, sexy. There was such a physicality to her. 74 is not an old lady today. 74 year olds are still going to work and the gym or travelling the world or going back to school. Carly is a shaky mess of an old fragile woman. She lived some good times when she was in her twenties and thirties. That's why the ancient white gays love her. Her music is pretty bad. B L A N D. She was ugly but sexy young woman - so there's your other reason for the old gay man respect. They relive the memories of out of their league dick they scored. Keeps y'all warm at night. Name one good song by Carly Simon where she sings well? You can't. She was a messy broad with a sloppy mouth. She might have built her legacy on something else. She never aspired to musical greatness. She was and remains a dilettante. Bad singer too. She doesn't belong in the same conversation as the good female singer songwriter stars of her time. Inky dinky spider girl.

Wade out with stones in your pockets. R263 is devoid of open eyes and objectivity. Everything I bet y'all swore you'd never be when you still got dick in your holes. You're not iconoclastic or radical or contributory at all. Worse than your parents or grandparents. So many ancient white gay men have never known love at all. That is tragic. But it's not too late to reevaluate the things you thought were substantial or worthwhile. You, old man who signs as Babe Paley, could still be something better than the shit you admire. Stand for something and show up for someone. I'm sorry for your sadness. Many old icons shine brighter than ever. But those who never should have been, can't fool anyone now. Carly Simon shouldn't even had a record deal. That's right, she doesn't. The bitch can't sing. And her songs were formless. And her style was wet and weird and unemotional. And she is a voice without any discernible tone. It's so nebulous as to be indescribable. Don't call good men or any woman a C*nt. It reveals your anger and exposes your forgotten ass Babe Paley.
How sad that you care about these women and their standard. Fly your own flag BabePaley. You ain't no WOMAN. And your taste and nom are antiquated as fuck. Jackie O Whore and Carly Simone Beauvoir. R295 Yes.
Carly's first memoir was pretty interesting. She complained that she was "treated like a piece of meat" in LA and passed around by the Warren Beatty Jack Nicholson set.
In the book she seems to sleep with all the men in her life, except her dad.
But she also talks about a sexual relationship he had with an older male that started when she was 8. She doesn't seem to regard it as abuse, but she shows the signs of someone who was abused.

I'd have to re-read the Wikipedia article to confirm, r306, but iirc, Simon ruled him out. It would, of course, be the ultimate inside joke if it were about Jagger given that he sings back-up o YSV.
Speaking of Jagger singing back-up on YSV, I love the song and always have and whenever I heard the background vocals, something always seemed familiar to me but I never could identify it. Then when it was pointed out to me about 15 years ago that it was Jagger's distinctive sound I was hearing, now, his voice is the ONLY thing I hear on the background vocals.

Carly has stated that "You're So Vain," is about David Geffen. Google that last sentence. Bitch has changed her tune [no pun intended]. She *did* say it was about Geffen. But rarely will a songwriter or author nail a single individual when they pen a story/song/novel. I can say that I'd be the farm that the line, "your scarf it was apricot," is a reference to Mick Jagger's stage outfits New York 1972. Her brother Peter took a pic of Carly that's labelled as Carly at a rock and roll concert. I swear it was at one of their July 1972 shows at Madison Square Garden.
by Anonymous | reply 317 | November 12, 2019 5:23 PM |
Accusing David Geffen of being with the "wife" of a close friend doesn't seem to fit. At all.
Carly has said that she really resented Warren Beatty treating her "like a piece of meat" and who is more vain than Beatty?

James Taylor is just an absolute asshole, from everything I've heard about him.
by Anonymous | reply 319 | November 12, 2019 6:10 PM |
While it was no secret that both Carly & James were not faithful to one another, Carly was more honest about it, and still wanted her marriage to work. She seemed more "open" than he was; the type that had no issue with her husband having the occasional fling--he was a good-looking music star, although balding as the years went on.
He, on the other hand, seems the type to want to have his cake and eat it too. But YOU can only have one piece, and it was named James.
by Anonymous | reply 320 | November 12, 2019 6:44 PM |
R314 Did James personally bar Carly from the house? I imagine his wife giving strict instructions to staff beforehand: "Under no circumstances is Carly Simon to enter this house. Understood?"
by Anonymous | reply 321 | November 12, 2019 7:17 PM |
r321, Carly mentioned the denial of bathroom use at the 2004 wedding during a Howard Stern interview. That was also the last time she spoke to James. I think James' new wife felt a bit threatened by Carly being there, if I recall. Afraid Carly would steal her husband away from her, using her apparently magical vagina.

by Anonymous | reply 323 | November 12, 2019 9:11 PM |
I also think James is so insecure, he needed to be with a woman who didn't compete with him.
He wanted to be the star/success in the relationship.
While James is more successful now, while they were married Carly was often more successful and it really got under his skin. And he was such an asshole he would tell her that he didn't think she had that much talent.

Back to Jackie O. I still haven’t read Carly’s book. But in his, Jim Hart describes an awkward conversation with Jackie where she suggests he find a supplemental line of work besides writing. A big reason their marriage imploded was his jealousy over her success, leading him to start staying away from home for increasing amounts of time, drowning his sorrows in booze and drugs. Although he wrote plenty of his own music, his most successful singles were covers or written by someone else, whereas her big hits were composed by her. Her albums also did better on the charts. I think one reason they passed on doing "A Star is Born" (yes, they were considered, but eventually Barbra snagged it) is it probably hit too close to home.

"A star is born" in my opinion is way more entertaining taking place in the movie business then music.
My favorite is still the one from the 1930s. I just find the movie business way more fascinating then the music industry. I guess because it Hollywood.

r346 that's true. Vain, egotistical guys like Taylor are usually assholes to the first two wives, then finally "settle down" and behave with the third wife because by that time they're too old and tired to do much of anything anymore.

Datalounge uses the word "overrated" a lot. Applies to these two famous women. Both were celebrated for too long a time, Carly is a terrible singer and homely ass songwriter. Her success is unfathomable outside of Martha's Vineyard and Mike Nichols. Cuz the bitch can't sing and her songs are schoolgirl constructions.
Jackie O was a bit more important. Bouvier was shrewed. (sic) That's the word. But what does it matter? She was a calculating bitch. But her grief was real and it was televised. And it was kind of profound looking. I wasn't born for twenty more years, but we've all seen it, a lot. It's a historical portrait of personal grief. The footage is quite moving. She did right by her husband and the country.
There's no reason to believe that she was an otherwise interesting woman or good woman. What a life of privileged discretion she led. Boring beyond belief. She smoked?!? Oh, how shocking. She talked a few men into arranging for a lot of money to come her way. The ones who had to pay, she married.

R359, you and the other negatives miss the point. She was a former First Lady. The White House was going to rack and ruin before she refurbished it to the historic home that it was meant to be. She did a lot of work personally on identifying the antiques and the history. She got others to donate antiques that fit the premises historically. She brought Bunny Mellon in to design the Rose Garden, where ceremonies are still held. She took her job as First Lady seriously. In other words she used her education to benefit the country while her husband was in office. She also helped save Grand Central Terminal in New York. She did a good job in publishing as well, living the life she wanted to live.
She was a snob. She also had an ego and was afraid of being broke. The gossip is what people know now, because these days it seems more valuable to know the worst about someone famous rather than what they did that was of value.. But it's a mistake to assume that is all there is.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | November 15, 2019 3:35 AM |
R362, I guess that would explain why for the past 25 years since her death an endless stream of best selling books on her have been published, the multi Oscar nominated film "Jackie" grossed just under $40 million and her name and iconic image are still synonymous with style and grace.
by Anonymous | reply 366 | November 15, 2019 3:50 AM |
The "Jackie" film was fantastic R366. I defended it upthread. The old fags here hate it. It doesn't suck Jackie's dick enough and did you know Natalie Portman is a jew? So don't go on bro. Try to live in 2020. The best selling books are all about JKOs bad behavior and what a courtesan style whore she was. Lifelong, even with her last married man diamond merchant. She was a greedy pig who marketed her body and "prestige." People were kind of shocked to learn that a president's wife itemized a $price for anal sex with her billionaire toad husband! And all the reports of what a cold and unkind mother and friend she was. And now Carly says she was no fun at a movie. Oh. And nobody cares. Because Jackie Kennedy is forgotten for her hideous fashion and wall-eyed ways. She never looked better than in a waist long veil. She made a good widow. For 2 days.
[quote]and what's remembered about Mrs. Kennedy isn't too kind.

I would argue that Jackie is even more revered today. In light of our society becoming ever more coarse and vulgar (r359/367 being a good example), Jackie is looked at even more fondly. We don't have "classy" public figures anymore, in the way Jackie was.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | November 15, 2019 4:54 AM |
I am not a historic figure r368. Just a handsome, talented and loving man. Jackie will be written about for a while longer. Her slutty life and disgraceful ways, her bad parenting and marital deals with the devil for cash. Her long black veil. She would be fucking mortified. Hopefully she can see. She's not hated - she's antiquated and nothing a woman would want to be. The bitch thought she was KLASSY. So do you R368 and that odious BabePaley poster. Datalounge is kind of funny. Ancient white drag queens with pretensions. Desperately hanging on to nonsense.

Jackie, Mike Nichols, etc. were polite to him which he misunderstood as friendships he alone had attracted. I thought the whole book was sad and his revelations sordid and unbecoming. I'm surprised it was published. His attachment to Carly was fraudulent. I felt sorry for Carly's love for this debauched cad.

From Jim Hart's book:

To me jackie is way more interesting then carly is. She comes from society, she married well multiple times, she instantly became a historical figure the moment her husband was elected. She got to be an American first lady, she married a billionaire and walked away from it with a huge fortune after he too died. She lived a life of luxury and comfort and got to get into a career she lived editing books etc etc.
And she'll be written about for centuries to come, just like every other president and first lady will be.
I guess Jackie wins. But carly's life definitely hasn't been dull. Jackie is just personally more interesting to me then carly is.

[R386], from what I remember it *wasn't* a vast fortune from Aristotle. She was majorly put out to discover that whilst sufficient, by no means was it celestial. I'm blanking on the fellow she was with when she died, but I think it wasn't until she allowed him to invest her capital, that she was in any way to be considered set for life. And remember, two kids costs lots of money.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | November 18, 2019 2:03 AM |
R388 Jackie walked away with a $26 million dollar settlement from christina onassis, and that was just to get rid of jackie.
When Jackie died in 1994, her estate was valued at $43.7 million dollars. Some people said it was $200 million, but it actually wasn't. But she was still rich though.
by Anonymous | reply 389 | November 18, 2019 2:07 AM |

I don't think that's shade at all R383.
Cher and Tina Turner have both talked about meeting her and saying how gracious she was to them. And this was long before either of them were superstars in their own right. Cher had just started out with Sonny and Tina was still with Ike. Tina said she was most struck by Jackie putting out her hand to say hello before she even finished introducing herself.
Cher and Sonny were invited to perform at some Manhattan society party where the guests looked at them like trash. But according to Cher, Jackie was the only one who went over and complimented them on their performance afterwards, and even sat down and chatted with them.
[quote]"That was so lovely" Jackie said when we were finished. She sounded like Marilyn Monroe, breathy and very sweet. She was very gracious and insisted we sit down next to her. Jackie told us she loved "I Got You Babe", and that she thought we were an interesting couple. And then she told Sonny he looked very romantic. "Very Shakespearean," she said. Jackie Kennedy wasn't a snob; she was kind to us. All of the other people were looking at us like, "What planet did these two get kicked off of? Son and I had been invited just as entertainment, but since Jackie was being so nice, they were too embarrassed not to be nice to us too. When she invited us to stay for coffee and dessert, the hosts said, "Of course we want them to stay. How lovely (Yeah right).[quote]

Jackie was a racist. It's well known. Who gives a rusty fuck about what Cher has to say? (about anything) The ancient gays of Datalounge who look for something good in Jackie WOULD be Cher fans. Ha. Wow. Bad taste abounds among the very old.
Neither of them stands for nothing. Cher was fun - in a very conservative way. But very dumb. Jack and Jackie made Ronnie and Nancy look like radicals. Dull, pedestrian, prescribed existences. JFK had over ten thousand ten minute fucks in his life and his idea of an affair was when he got the peen off three times in the same woman. I suspect that's why the ancient bathhouse gays here continue to praise JKO. Kind of sad. A celebration of separating public and private behavior. She was nothing. Just a nothing person. An unlucky whore who had to scale down her standards each time she fucked - for more money. She died the wife of a thousand nights. She made sure of it. Mr and Mrs Kennedy were both whores.

r412 I'm convinced Carly is terribly mentally ill and that if she told herself that Jim was straight she was naïve and ill enough to believe it. We're not talking about a normal person here. She's extremely neurotic. She has also convinced herself Jackie was a good friend, when she was a passive aggressive narcissist. I feel sorry for Carly, she's a good person, just very ill, she lives in her own little world of make believe where she only thinks the good of people and convinces herself they're something they're not.

Bunny, I reached out to Carly Simon to write an autobiography, purely business. Now she thinks we're best buddies and I can't get rid of her. She's more neurotic than Joan and Ethel put together. She annoys the hell out of me, she invites herself to 1040 and Red Gate, that mouth and those teeth, and she's so damn needy and insecure. She asked me about the assassination, can you imagine? Because I love you all, I’ve listened to the Audible versions Carly’s memoir (read by Elizabeth McGovern!) and Jim Hart’s memoir so that I can report back. Each are deliciously self-indulgent nonsense. My highest recommendation! Jackie comes off as a hero in both books. It’s clear she had Jim’s number (0) from the moment she met him. Jackie seems fairly self-possessed, and knew how to manipulate these neurotic fools.
Both books should be required reading/listening to join DL.

Of course, DL would explode if Caroline ever released a book on her mother and brother. And we all know that'll never happen anyway. But it would be interesting if she ever did. And throw her aunt Lee in there too.

[quote]I can buy that Carly didn't know Jim Hart was gay when they were first married, but not for 20 years. She's not that dumb or naive and she seems to have had a healthy sex drive, at least when younger. She just made her peace with it, for whatever reason.
CARLY: "Please fuck me!"
JIM: "No!"
CARLY: "It's been seven years!"
JIM: "That's because I am nooooot oooooooone of snatch's faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaans!"
CARLY: "Goodness, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were gay. Which drawer has the batteries?"

I agree with R444.

Hard to believe the Kardashians are now wealthier than the Kennedys.
Crazy.

If only the Kennedy family got into reality tv, R447. Ethel, the 91-year old matriarch, would be a hoot.
by Anonymous | reply 448 | December 4, 2019 9:54 PM |
Lucky there wasn't a camera at Hickory Hill in the 60s and 70s, Ethel would have been put in jail for child abuse
by Anonymous | reply 449 | December 4, 2019 9:57 PM |
Please, no one wants to see any Kennedy do a sex tape. Joan and her beverage problem would make great television though.

by Anonymous | reply 452 | December 5, 2019 12:46 AM |
r444 funny you say that. I read somewhere once that Jackie always encouraged people to talk about themselves to her so therefore she didn't have to reveal much about herself. Smart
by Anonymous | reply 453 | December 5, 2019 12:50 AM |
Jackie had an odd habit of never looking people eye to eye when speaking with them. She would look at them at an angle, almost in profile.
by Anonymous | reply 454 | December 5, 2019 1:15 AM |
Jackie was not your friend. She used you. Until you were no longer useful.
by Anonymous | reply 455 | December 5, 2019 2:40 AM |
R453 I think we’ve arrived at the essence of Carly and Jackie’s friendship. Oversharer and mystery.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | December 5, 2019 12:28 PM |
I’m a little further along into the book, it’s still early in their acquaintance. Carly is describing how everybody tiptoes around Jackie because she’s such an awesome presence. At one point Carly compliments Jackie’s sandals at a dinner party, and an awkward silence descends upon the assembled group (the Styron crowd). Apparently she’s gotten too personal for Jackie. What horseshit.

R457, But, eventually Jackie offered that she purchased them in some foreign country.

Jackie was enraged that someone might draw attention to her huge manly feet
by Anonymous | reply 459 | December 7, 2019 6:24 PM |
Jackie had, of course, stolen the shoes and was fearful that Carly was on to her.
by Anonymous | reply 460 | December 7, 2019 6:25 PM |
The biggest shame of all was that she stole them from a Goodwill
by Anonymous | reply 461 | December 7, 2019 6:27 PM |
Carly was surprised. It was rare for JAO to wear shoes at all.

R459, When Jackie mentioned that she once considered becoming a ballerina, Ethel pointed to her size 11 feet and roared, “With those clodhoppers of yours, you’d be better off going in for soccer!” She referred to Jackie derisively as a “debutante,” called her “Jacque-leen,” which, Ethel roared, rhymed with “queen.”

Jackie seemed to have a lot of psychological issues that became much worse after the assassination.
There are a lot of stories of her dropping friends, or being very friendly with someone one day and walking past them the next day like they were complete strangers.
A good example of her dropping friends were Charles and Martha Bartlett. The Bartletts introduced her to JFK and were JFK Jr’s godparents. They were frequent visitors to her home and were friends with Bobby and Ethel. She saw them once after the assassination by chance , just after she moved to Manhattan, and then never saw them again.

Carly writes that Jackie was VERY opposed to the marriage to Jim Hart, because he didn't have money. That's our Jackleen!
Jackie also threw shade at Jann Wenner, telling Carly "he's not your friend." Carly goes on to note that she is still not in the R&R Hall of Fame, though "her peers" are.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | December 7, 2019 11:16 PM |
I always felt sorry for Jackie whenever I read that "clodhopper" story. She really walked into that one, no pun intended. What a bitch, that Ethel. I would've wanted to strangle her on the spot. Just the fact that the story made the rounds indicates how frosted Jackie must have been.
by Anonymous | reply 470 | December 7, 2019 11:31 PM |
Somehow I missed this when it took place a few years ago. I kind of hate it, partly because I can't stand Taylor Swift, but mostly because I cringe at seeing Carly put through this ridiculous karaoke-style performance, where they prance, bounce and mug through the song, arm-in-arm like drunk sorority sisters. So undignified. Carly was quite physical onstage back in the day, but in a much cooler way. Blech, kids today!

Despite growing up with wealth and also marrying it, Ethel was/is a classless, uncultured twit. Stupid bitch wouldn't know Jack-lene is the French pronunciation. Ethel can barely master English, or her children.

Ethel was always very coarse and crass.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | December 8, 2019 2:13 AM |
Jackie ghosted a lot of people from her White House and Washington days merely because she couldn't cope being reminded of JFK and the assassination, which is understandable. Others were ghosted for disloyalty, talking about her to the press etc. Some were ghosted for small petty misdemeanors that I'm sure made sense to her at the time. Some of it was probably snobbery too, She was fragile and mistrusting of people, but can anyone blame her?
by Anonymous | reply 474 | December 8, 2019 2:15 AM |

R496, Ben Bradlee's book was published before the Judith Campbell Exner revelations were made public, so he didn't even mention JFK's extramarital action. But, he did write that JFK used off color language and that didn't fit the JFK image Jackie was trying to perpetuate.

Carly describes an awful dinner party given by Katherine Graham, who conducts it like a mean teacher, forcing everyone to take turns discussing NAFTA and then putting Carly on the spot by making her sing after dinner. Graham sounds horrible.

Was Ethel eager to become first lady? Was that something important to her? I've heard she was disappointed when she realized she'd never hold that place in American history, just as so many other political wives were.
Ann Romney, Cindy McCain, and Tipper Gore etc.

Finally finished the book. Didn't earn much about Jackie. Carly seems so nice, and so humble, if needy. A lot of the book is her striving to be poetic and literary. I guess when you grow up in the publishing world and hang out with the Styrons, that's what you do.

Carly Simon is a nice person as is Jim Harte- very nice- both of them. I take Carly at her word about Mrs O. So much hemming and hawing about this harmless little book. Silly. I know Jim reasonably well- he is a lovely and caring man who has had some problems in his life. I do know he has faced them head on and has the ability to forgive and maintain good relationships with those he inadvertently hurt. That is not easy.
And what about all these people who have so much knowledge of James Taylor- the asshole. How do they know?
I think anything that adds to the published record on Mrs O deserve attention. She is one of the most enigmatic figures in American history.

c h a r l i e sold hankies from a cart outside Grand Central and fancies himself an insider to the Kennedys? Warhol, Liza, Bob and all the other useless people of their time. He sucked Babar Streizand's dick until he choked. James Taylor did Carly Simon a favor to fuck her. She's the most ugly ass neurotic bitch who can't sing. People sound crazy when they play their violins from the 1970s. A lot of people died after that but that's no reason to find Jackie O attractive. This thread must be about the MOST eldest gays time, but if c h a r l i e kneeled for them - you can guess it must be wrong. He inhaled too much shoeshine. That's his claim to fame regarding JFK Junior BTW. He stalked him to the gym after giving him a shoeshine from his cart. c h a r l i e has beautiful memories to share.... and he will.
