Rise & Fall: Jon Hamm

I suffer from secondhand embarrassment.. meaning I get super uncomfortable when I see someone IRL or on tv mortifying themselves. Soooo you can imagine how I felt watching Jon Hamm in his latest commercial, advertising food delivery services in Canada for Skip the Dishes.

Many would argue his acting range is limited at best. Don Draper was one note... albeit a gorgeous, wooden note. His performance was revered thanks in some part to the strength of the entire cast. The fact Thad he’s sexy AF didn’t hurt. Not to mention he’s rumored to be hung like a horse.

His post Mad Men career was already beginning to look bleak (the slick ex-fuck-buddy character in Bridesmaids was hardly inspired) but there is something SO SAD about seeing that gorgeous man hawking food delivery services. He even had to become an honorary Canadian to do it (we’ll take him!)

So this is a call for a director or talent agent who may be reading this, maybe someone from HBO or Netflix or some Indie (porn) Director .... can’t we drum up a little something more for Jon? After all, he has that giant snake to feed and house and it ain’t cheap!

Lots of big Hollyqood stars make money overseas hawking shit on tv.

by Anonymousreply 2October 22, 2019 5:27 AM

R2 [quote] Lots of big Hollywood stars make money overseas hawking shit on tv.

1) No sea separates Canada & the USA - stars may pimp themselves out over in the Asian market but Canada is a little too close to home for embarrassing ads

2) Its also what he’s hawking - this isn’t some futuristic anime Hugo Boss ad - it’s basically pizza delivery

by Anonymousreply 3October 22, 2019 5:38 AM

It could be that he's making bank while he can. He may be smart rather than desperate. Celebrity has a shelf life.

by Anonymousreply 4October 22, 2019 5:47 AM

How does Hamm not fall down? Gigi from The Comeback wants to know.

Great thread.

by Anonymousreply 6October 22, 2019 5:52 AM

Totally lucked out. Before Don Draper I recall him in a supporting role in some cop show. Just as he has been AFTER Mad Men he came off as a weak and immature performer.

by Anonymousreply 7October 22, 2019 5:59 AM

What else is he got to do? Do movies that no one ever sees.

by Anonymousreply 8October 25, 2019 2:56 AM

If he knew what was good for him he’d be pushing like hell for a Mad Men spin-off or reunion or something of the ilk. Draper was the best he will get, and it was a great peak. It’s all he’ll be remembered and known for. If he were smart, he’d be fight like hell to get back in the role. But, alas, he doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the drawer. It doesn’t help that he’s an actor whose career has been almost completely fueled by his attractiveness and yet he refuses to do nude scenes.

by Anonymousreply 9October 25, 2019 3:06 AM

He's always been a mostly TV actor who does an occasional movie.

by Anonymousreply 10October 25, 2019 3:07 AM

Actually, now that I think about it, George Clooney was in the same position. Came off of a hit TV show and was desperate to break into Hollywood movies and took anything offered to him. The only reason he is an A-lister now is because he made famous friends and their publicist marketed them as the new Rat Pack.

Maybe Hamm should team up with Steve Carell and others and form his own.

by Anonymousreply 11October 25, 2019 3:17 AM

He's got several movies in post and is on Good Omens, and in the last few years has done quite a few movies. It was back in 2015 or so that he was doing mainly guest shots on sitcoms and voiceovers so his career since Baby Driver seems to have really picked up, actually.

He also might need to age a bit- get like older man dad/maybe even like “God”, CEO type roles in a decade or so...

by Anonymousreply 13October 25, 2019 4:01 AM

Poor Jon. He has a role in Clint Eastwood's next movie (Richard Jewell) and Top Gun. And pitifully he's also going to be in a film with Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan. And then to top it all off he's in a film written by John Patrick Shanley. You may know him as the guy who wrote Moonstruck and Doubt.

You are so right OP. No one watches anything that Clint Eastwood is involved in, Top Gun will be a flop and no one would ever see anything Emily Blunt is in. Jon Hamm is a total failure

by Anonymousreply 14October 25, 2019 4:01 AM

And don't forget Lucy in the sky.

by Anonymousreply 15October 25, 2019 4:25 AM

I love it when Jon's publicist gets on here for every thread.

by Anonymousreply 16October 25, 2019 4:28 AM

He gets mad now if reboot of Mad men is brought up. Bitch please you wouldn't be nothing if it hadn't been for that show.

by Anonymousreply 17October 25, 2019 4:30 AM

He will never be a Clooney. That performance in Good Omens was so phoned in. Hated that show. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 18October 25, 2019 4:35 AM

Yes. I will be running to see Top Gun to see Jon Hamm. 😂😂😂

by Anonymousreply 19October 25, 2019 4:38 AM

People don't tend to say no to money, every really rich celebrities will whore themselves out for an easy paycheck. Julia Louis Dreyfus has more money than god but was still doing all those Old Navy commercials

by Anonymousreply 20October 25, 2019 4:38 AM

I'd still do him.

by Anonymousreply 21October 25, 2019 4:44 AM

He was good on SNL. His James Mason in this sketch was spot-on.

I'll take Paul Rudd for the center square.

by Anonymousreply 23October 25, 2019 4:48 AM

I feel like he is trying very hard to get in a franchise, from Batman to X-Men to Ryan Murphy to Star Wars. I hope he get one.

by Anonymousreply 24January 3, 2020 9:28 PM

I'd love to slurp on that cock!

by Anonymousreply 25January 3, 2020 9:35 PM

It's not like he graduated from the RADA or Juilliard and was incredible in Shakespeare in the park, before transitioning to TV. He lucked out for a bit, but his goal was to be famous, not to be an actor. He appeared in super cheesy shows like wheel of fortune and such before landing a recurrent role in a serie. Then he missed a step.

by Anonymousreply 27January 3, 2020 9:57 PM

I think he's got a decent range--he can do serious and comedy, but he's a TV actor, he doesn't really pop in movies. Booze is clearly an issue and he doesn't have the brains that George Clooney has. Clooney doesn't have a huge range, but he knows how to pick a script. Hamm just seems to kind of wait for some not-too-taxing part to come along and then does it. I thought he was good in Good Omens, but it was hardly a challenging part. Same thing with Kimmy Schmidt.

He's said that doing Don Draper was emotionally really hard on him--a fading alcoholic pretty boy playing a fading alcoholic pretty boy. I kind of wonder if he's stayed away from harder, more interesting parts for that reason. He's very good in Mad Men and the part was a demanding one. He doesn't seem like he's even tried to do anything close to that level of complexity. Maybe the closest was that Black Mirror episode, where he was also a compelling sleaze ball, but it's really not the same.

by Anonymousreply 28January 3, 2020 10:13 PM

He was funny on 30 Rock, SNL, and Kimmy Schmidt. There's always room for handsome guys in comedy, plus no one will care if he's got a booze bloat!

by Anonymousreply 29January 3, 2020 10:26 PM

Yeah, I think he should stick with comedy -- he does have a talent for it. The problem is the booze. He's fallen off the wagon and I don't think people want to work with him. Kathy Griffin said she sat next to him at a dinner party and he was obnoxiously drunk and was shooting off his mouth.

by Anonymousreply 30January 3, 2020 10:44 PM

Hard to believe that January Jones currently has two shows on Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 31January 3, 2020 10:51 PM

Hard to believe he drinks so much when both of his parents died so early. If I had bad genes like he does, I'd be very careful about what I did to my body.

by Anonymousreply 32January 4, 2020 1:02 AM

Why would you be depressed if you had a dick that big and enough fame that people were lining up to service it?

by Anonymousreply 33January 4, 2020 1:07 AM

[quote] If I had bad genes like he does, I'd be very careful about what I did to my body.

If he has bad genes, it really doesn't matter what he does to his body.

That's kind of the point of bad genes—they're beyond your control.

by Anonymousreply 34January 4, 2020 1:08 AM

I think the big dick is bullshit. He just is a dick and a mean drunk.

by Anonymousreply 35January 4, 2020 1:10 AM

He is box office poison.

by Anonymousreply 36January 4, 2020 1:12 AM

That commercial is stupider than most, but it's still a paycheck.

by Anonymousreply 37January 4, 2020 1:17 AM

I think I got a glimpse of him in a preview of the new Curb Your Enthusiasm.

by Anonymousreply 38January 4, 2020 1:26 AM

He's an extremely limited actor who lucked out into one of the most iconic roles in V history. As the OP pointed out, the role was tailor made for someone with such limited range due to the way the character was written.

The only other thing I remember him being good in was "30 Rock" since he played a borderline retarded very good looking man, i.e. himself. Someone mentioned "The Division", that Lifetime cop show from early '00s. When you're the weakest link in something like that, it says a lot.

by Anonymousreply 39January 4, 2020 1:32 AM

I agree. He really doesn't have a lot of range as an actor. That's why he hasn't been very successful in films. He's always at the Hollywood parties and he seems like such a kiss ass.

by Anonymousreply 40January 4, 2020 1:39 AM

I liked him until I read about all that shit he did in his frat. He set some guy on fire for fuck's sake!

by Anonymousreply 41January 4, 2020 1:41 AM

Fine, bitches, more for me!

by Anonymousreply 42January 4, 2020 1:42 AM

r34 but even with bad genes you don't want to tempt fate.

by Anonymousreply 43January 4, 2020 2:08 AM

Fate is fate—whether you tempt it or not, it doesn't matter. That's the point of fate.

by Anonymousreply 44January 4, 2020 2:10 AM

He's a meh actor and his prudishness has made him impossible to market. If you're in Hollywood and you can't act for shit but you're semi-attractive you can still have a successful career as long as you aren't scared of taking your clothes off on film. If you're a boring/bad/one-note actor AND you refuse to do nude scenes you should look into pursuing a real estate license.

by Anonymousreply 45January 4, 2020 4:23 AM

OP is clearly a status troll. You feel embarrassment for a person making millions and millions of dollars for one day of work. You have no idea what his financial obligations are, what opportunities exist for him in terms of feature or television work, or what he earns on one day of work for an advertisement that he may never see if he has no plans on stepping foot in Canada. For all you know, they gave him 20% of the company for eight hours of work During which he spent half the time in his trailer.

The money that can be earned off of the successful ad campaign can end up being multiplied if it keeps going with new ads.

Ever since Catherine Zeta Jones agreed to do T-Mobile commercials, and earned more off of those than she ever did acting despite being an Oscar winner, it is open season for celebrities to make money on these ads. My favorite example is Sarah Jessica Parker getting $38 million for doing a few ads for gap that only ran for a few months before they abandoned the campaign and she got to keep every penny.

by Anonymousreply 46January 4, 2020 5:32 AM

They're smart to do those commercials, as r46 noted the money is insane. Most movie and tv stars only have several years of being big money earners and they very rarely reach those heights again, so they want to make as much money as they can in the window of time that they have. There's nothing wrong with that.

by Anonymousreply 47January 4, 2020 5:39 AM

I think what people are saying. You come one off the best shows in TV history. And your doing annoying take out food commercials and box office bombs. Something wrong there.

by Anonymousreply 48January 4, 2020 9:59 AM

He could do a frat comedy.

A scene where he drags around a naked pledge by the balls with the claws of a hammer would be a laugh riot.

by Anonymousreply 49January 4, 2020 10:53 AM

He could do a frat porn.

A scene where he gets swarmed by angry twink pledges and paddled by them would be a laugh riot.

by Anonymousreply 50January 4, 2020 11:07 AM

[quote]If he has bad genes, it really doesn't matter what he does to his body.

Bullshit. His mother died of colon cancer. Thee are steps to take to minimize getting colon cancer or dying of it.

by Anonymousreply 51January 4, 2020 11:24 AM

Per R30, read my "A To Z" book. Hammy is a cunt. And this from someone who used to be palsy-walsy with Miss Andy Cohen, so TRUST ME!

by Anonymousreply 52January 4, 2020 11:30 AM

[quote]He could do a frat porn. A scene where he gets swarmed by angry twink pledges and paddled by them would be a laugh riot.

I'd prefer a scene where angry twinks overwhelm him and pull his pants down and spank and fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 53January 4, 2020 11:35 AM

Stop putting actors on pedestals, OP, they are just people and need to pay the rent too. It's just a job.

by Anonymousreply 54January 4, 2020 12:07 PM

R52 That's why we had to part company, Griffin, because if you read my book The Andy Cohen Diaries, Jonnie is the nicest, most charming man in the world! I want him so bad!

by Anonymousreply 55January 4, 2020 12:19 PM

I have never watched an episode of Mad Men. He just doesn’t have ‘it’ to make it on the big screen. When I saw Baby Driver I thought Jamie Fox should have been the main villain. Keanu Reeves has given some bad performances but he is still a movie star.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 56January 4, 2020 12:27 PM

Keanu's still famous because he

A) got the right roles and starred in multiple blockbusters, not a boring period drama on AMC.

B) sucked the right cocks and was unafraid to whore himself out and be risqué in the way that Jon Hamm is. Hollywood is no place for a prude, and if you want to be a prude in show business you better get used to collecting unemployment.

by Anonymousreply 57January 4, 2020 12:36 PM

Being an angry and obnoxious drunk wouldn't keep him from working if any of his non-MM projects had been hits. Alas...they weren't.

Can't blame him for taking commercials and voiceovers. He still needs to eat.

by Anonymousreply 58January 4, 2020 1:05 PM

[quote] He could do a frat porn.

Or maybe he can play a gay role. The bear hug between him and Harry Styles on SNL makes me want to see more. He'd make a perfect sugar daddy to some brat twink.

by Anonymousreply 59January 4, 2020 1:07 PM

^^^ Like a gay version of Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 60January 4, 2020 1:09 PM

If he likes beer then I want him to do a Titan Man porn. I'll volunteer to be the one he pisses on.....

by Anonymousreply 61January 4, 2020 1:12 PM

So weird that someone on DL is SO fucking pressed about JH doing this commercial in Canada. Get OVER it, Mary.

Lots of stars do commercials outside of the US. It's easy money. Most of them are in Asia or other non-English speaking areas, but Bea Arthur made pisspots of money at the height of her Golden Girls fame doing many, many Shoppers Drug Mart commercials in Canada.

He's clearly not going to be the leading man everyone thought he might be in film, but he's a character actor trapped in that face/ body.

Although I am very here for it if he ever decides to do porn.....

by Anonymousreply 62January 4, 2020 6:33 PM

No matter how much $$$ a person has, if somebody tells them they can make a few million for 2-3 days of work, they're going to take it. You would be crazy not to. It's such easy money for so little effort.

by Anonymousreply 63January 4, 2020 7:07 PM

I bet he'd show dong for the right amount.

I'd like to see a TV series in which he and Penn Badgley play good guys...cops, doctors, whatever...and gay boyfriends. They need to be good guys. And they'd be super hot together.

by Anonymousreply 66January 4, 2020 11:22 PM

I love the guy, no matter what.

by Anonymousreply 67January 4, 2020 11:30 PM

I liked the Canada commercial. It was cute. Can't blame Americans for wanting to be Canadian with the orange turd in office.

by Anonymousreply 68January 4, 2020 11:35 PM

I think he enjoys doing comedy more but other than THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT and BRIDESMAIDS the comedy projects he says yes to are too off-kilter for him like an appearance on UK's TOAST OF LONDON and that weird series where he played the older version of Daniel Radcliffe.

by Anonymousreply 69January 4, 2020 11:37 PM

Americans don't want to be Canadian.

by Anonymousreply 70January 4, 2020 11:38 PM

R66 Penn Badgley is like Rami Malek, he has to play a certain sort of character that compliments the actor's inherent weirdness. Put either of those boys in a typical Hollywood leading man role and it'll suck because they both come off as creepy, spaced out weirdos.

by Anonymousreply 71January 4, 2020 11:40 PM

Speak for yourself, R70, eh?

by Anonymousreply 72January 5, 2020 10:04 AM

He always reminded me of that actor from Burn Notice: fantastic for that specific part, but not really meant to fit anything else well.

by Anonymousreply 73January 5, 2020 11:10 AM

I really don't see a particularly good looking man here. I never understood the appeal. Half the whores on chaturbate are better looking. Is he really that handsome in Fraus eyes?

by Anonymousreply 74January 5, 2020 11:33 AM

[quote]He always reminded me of that actor from Burn Notice

I was introduced to Jeffrey Donovan in a double episode of Homicide: Life on the Street back in the '90s, in which he played twins, one of whom was the murderer. It was such a great performance, and he was so sexual, I looked for him everywhere until he popped up on Burn Notice. And I didn't like that show much at all. I don't think it was Donovan's fault. Just not a very good show.

by Anonymousreply 75January 5, 2020 12:07 PM

R74 He used to regularly display his Hammaconda while doing pap strolls. Pics revealed a large endowment untethered by any restraints whatsoever. When you can clearly see the outline of a man's cock head through his pants, things like his eyes being too close together don't really matter.

by Anonymousreply 76January 5, 2020 12:39 PM

R76, I just WWed you, perhaps too soon. Don't tell me you're the "eyes too close together" cunt.

by Anonymousreply 77January 5, 2020 12:41 PM

Agree with R12. Mad Men was one of those once-in-a-career leading roles for lucky actors. He was in Kimmy Schmidt and Good Omens, stars in the Top Gun sequel slated for release this year. He’s not washed up. These are good roles for someone who is really only known for one role.

by Anonymousreply 78January 5, 2020 12:44 PM

I'm not, R77. If I'm anything, I'm the Enjoys Gazing at the Hammaconda Troll.

I'm surprised this wasn't brought up more in this thread since the reveal of that incident pretty much destroyed his reputation. Obviously there are many criminals in show business and not many people care about it but still, coupled with his limited range he became suddenly much more repulsive. He is a sexy guy and even though I rarely watched Mad Men Don Draper was that perfect role for him. I don't remember really liking him anywhere else but after just having looked through his acting history at IMDb I realized I've seen like 2 % of the stuff he's been in. There's something seriously unlikeable about his acting.

by Anonymousreply 83January 5, 2020 1:36 PM

Donovan used to go to this Dr I worked for on the UWS. He was a royal dick and wasn’t that cute. Mouth breather. This was about 5 years ago. Plus his girlfriend looked about 18. Sorry, off subject but a random factoid. Hamm is cuter in real life but killing himself and his looks with alcohol.

by Anonymousreply 90January 5, 2020 6:49 PM

I feel sorry for his Jessica Stein exgirlfriend who wasted her child rearing years in his drunk ass.

I would have hung in there to have the Hammaconda breed me on the regular, tho.

by Anonymousreply 92January 5, 2020 7:10 PM

He doesn't seem to have the killer instinct that the big stars have. Pretty much coasted for a couple years after Mad Men, which is exactly when an ambitious person would have been working their ass off. He's probably very well-off but not crazy rich, maybe he's not materialistic. Of course it's possible he's just an asshole and no one wanted to hire him.

by Anonymousreply 93January 5, 2020 7:24 PM

R93 Hamm was getting $275,000 an episode for Mad Men, he probably has a good financial advisor and is careful with his money since he doesn't have a flashy Hollywood lifestyle. His net worth is around $30M not super rich but rich. He's not gonna sweat if he doesn't work for a while.

by Anonymousreply 94January 5, 2020 8:36 PM

So no one's going to mention THAT HAIRSTYLE at R27?

by Anonymousreply 95January 5, 2020 8:42 PM

It's been discussed at length before, R95.

He seems like such a dumb dolt there. I'm sure Jennifer did a big Henry Higgins on him and shaped and molded what had been just a pretty lump of clay.

by Anonymousreply 96January 5, 2020 8:48 PM

[quote]He seems like such a dumb dolt there.

He was just phoning it in. His ex-girlfriend was working on that show and asked him for a favor, plus he needed money then.

by Anonymousreply 97January 5, 2020 9:01 PM

I got curious and googled...apparently Hamm made a lot more on Mad Men than I thought. He got $250K per episode in the last season. That's three million right there, plus whatever from the previous seasons (couldn't find a good source) plus he got a producer credit so presumably he owns a piece of the syndication on top of his residuals. He easily earned five or six mill on that show, maybe ten or more.

If I had his money I would retire...but then, I'm not working in my dream job like he is.

Of course another factor is that by Hollywood standards he had his breakthrough late in life, especially for his niche. In a parallel universe he's having Paul Rudd's career.
