"Reds", the life story of the communist journalist John Reed. I loved it at the time, but tried rewatching it a few years ago and thought it was horrible, except for the documentary portions featuring Reed's actual contemporaries speaking; a few excellent performances (not Beatty's); and the beautiful cinematography of Vittorio Storaro.

Jeepers Creepers - loved it then and I still think it’s an original horror movie.

Gosford Park - I could watch this over and over and never tire of it. Love everything about it .

Chinatown (1974), with Lucy Mame a close second

by Anonymousreply 54October 22, 2019 2:01 PM

Nothing jumped out of my memory for beloved movies of my high school years except "Fame," but that was the year before graduation. So I looked up 1981 movies and I saw several but the only one I remember really enjoying was "An American Werewolf in London." I saw "Raging Bull" on mushrooms but I think that was the previous year too.

by Anonymousreply 55October 22, 2019 4:01 PM

"An American Werewolf in London" is a wonderful, funny, scary, sad horror movie, like "Carrie". It' holds up so much better than the prestige crap that wins awards and used to impress me.

by Anonymousreply 56October 22, 2019 11:03 PM

Could you have at at least posted a picture or link OP? I mean would that have been so hard? Why don’t you try to think more of others next time before you post?

by Anonymousreply 57October 22, 2019 11:17 PM

"American Splendor"

(Though "Finding Nemo" and "Lost In Translation" were close behind.)

Who graduated high school in 2001? People hardly remember films that came out that year.

by Anonymousreply 60October 23, 2019 12:50 AM

R60, I did. It was a shitty year for film. 1999, 2000, and 2002 all had better films. Can I change my answer to 2001: A space odyssey?

by Anonymousreply 61October 23, 2019 12:59 AM

R61, Y Tu Mama Tambien, one of my favorite films, came out in 2001.

by Anonymousreply 62October 23, 2019 1:02 AM

R62, that was a good one! Young Gael Garcia Bernal was hot!

by Anonymousreply 63October 23, 2019 1:05 AM

Also in 2001: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

by Anonymousreply 64October 23, 2019 1:07 AM

My Own Private Idaho (1991)

by Anonymousreply 65October 23, 2019 1:08 AM

2001 was "Mulholland Drive".

by Anonymousreply 66October 23, 2019 1:08 AM

It’s a tossup between Hannah and Her Sisters and Little Shop of Horrors.

Other than that, 1986 was a terrible year for movies.

by Anonymousreply 67October 23, 2019 1:18 AM

86=Sid and Nancy!

by Anonymousreply 68October 23, 2019 1:24 AM

“The Young and the Hung” by William Higgins. 1988

by Anonymousreply 69October 23, 2019 1:26 AM

R67, I watched Little Shop last night! What a great movie, I can't believe that Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold were teenagers when it filmed.

by Anonymousreply 81October 24, 2019 3:28 AM

For 1971 (has it really been that long?), I'll have to name two:

- Fiddler on the Roof, which I actually saw when it came out

- A Clockwork Orange, which I like more, but didn't see for a few more years

R79- I saw Superman with my parents in December 1978. I was 13 years old. We all enjoyed it. I remember going into a variety store( remember those) and buying a jumbo Nestle's Crunch Bar or Mr. Goodbar and smuggling it into the theatre. Half of the fun of going to a movie when you're a kid is the treat you eat while watching the movie.

I'd have to be split between Robin Hood : Men in Tights (watch it - it is God Damn hysterical), True Romance or the Joy Luck Club.

I know, I know. Schindler's List is a masterpiece, but it just too damn depressing to be a favorite.
