"Reds", the life story of the communist journalist John Reed. I loved it at the time, but tried rewatching it a few years ago and thought it was horrible, except for the documentary portions featuring Reed's actual contemporaries speaking; a few excellent performances (not Beatty's); and the beautiful cinematography of Vittorio Storaro.

Nothing jumped out of my memory for beloved movies of my high school years except "Fame," but that was the year before graduation. So I looked up 1981 movies and I saw several but the only one I remember really enjoying was "An American Werewolf in London." I saw "Raging Bull" on mushrooms but I think that was the previous year too.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 22, 2019 4:01 PM |
"An American Werewolf in London" is a wonderful, funny, scary, sad horror movie, like "Carrie". It' holds up so much better than the prestige crap that wins awards and used to impress me.

Could you have at at least posted a picture or link OP? I mean would that have been so hard? Why don’t you try to think more of others next time before you post?

"American Splendor"
(Though "Finding Nemo" and "Lost In Translation" were close behind.)

R60, I did. It was a shitty year for film. 1999, 2000, and 2002 all had better films. Can I change my answer to 2001: A space odyssey?

For 1971 (has it really been that long?), I'll have to name two:
- Fiddler on the Roof, which I actually saw when it came out
- A Clockwork Orange, which I like more, but didn't see for a few more years

R79- I saw Superman with my parents in December 1978. I was 13 years old. We all enjoyed it. I remember going into a variety store( remember those) and buying a jumbo Nestle's Crunch Bar or Mr. Goodbar and smuggling it into the theatre. Half of the fun of going to a movie when you're a kid is the treat you eat while watching the movie.

I'd have to be split between Robin Hood : Men in Tights (watch it - it is God Damn hysterical), True Romance or the Joy Luck Club.
I know, I know. Schindler's List is a masterpiece, but it just too damn depressing to be a favorite.
